Deleted login.keychain file

Somehow I accidentally erased my login.keychain file and now keychain just plain doesn't work. "Repair," and "Verify" do nothing because I'm missing that file. The file is not in my trash or anywhere on the disk. No, I don't know how I erased it. Please tell me there's a way to recover or recreate this file without having to re-install OS X!!!

I tried that, and I just get a message box saying, "An error occurred while creating a new keychain." I used some software to undelete my login.keychain file, replaced it back into it's original location, and tried to verify and repair with Keychain, but all that does is tell me that "login.keychain appears to be damaged," followed by a bunch of useless text, and ending with "Repair Failed." If Keychain can't fix it's own file, is there anything that can, or will I have to (groan) reinstall OS X? And if that's the case, will reinstallation even work if Keychain is not functioning? It's my understanding that Keychain controls ALL of my passwords, or have I been misinformed? I say that because I've tried to access my filevault and the master password, which I assume is stored in Keychain, doesn't work. Help please!

  • Deleted Login Keychain by mistake--restore?

I was doing maintenance on wife's MBPro running 10.6.3--deleted login keychain by mistake--how do I restore?--Keychain repair gives error "login keychain missing"--

If you log out and log back in again the system should create a new, empty login keychain. I think that Keychain Access>Keychain First Aid can do this as well. You'll have to re-enter any passwords, etc that were stored there.

  • Deleted Login keychain

For some time, since I upgraded my iMac to SL (tho not on my MacBook) Mail askes for p/w ever 10 mins on my Gmail a/cs.
I was told on another group I could delete the SMTP items (I don't think I had a problem with IMAP as I was getting mail even when it was asking for a p/w) and when I selcted te 5 items the whold Login keychain went and there seemed to be no Undo.
I feel I am living on borrowed time as I can't enter replacement p/ws there being no Login Keychain and fear being locked out totally, for instance if I have to restart ...
Can I restore it from my MacBook or even better from TM - if so how do I find it in TM and where does it belong? I have searcged for it on my MacBook and assume it is an invisible item.
    Cheers, Colin
PS - All I seem to have left in the way of p/ws are those kept in a Secure note - thank gooness for that, but I can't apply them in the absense of a Login Keychain ...

    Hi, and thanks.
I had just found it before I saw yor reply (Mail today thinks mail from Apple is spam), so I am now back 'in' having resored from TM.
I can now see how I went wrong in delting the whole chain (too easy and no undo that I coud see), but still don't see how to delete just smtp.google,com.
    Anu ideas out there?
    Cheers, Colin

    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
    One thing you could try:
    Go to Applications/Utilities/KeyChange Access.
Open this application and double click on one of passwords listed there.
In the window that appears click on 'Access Control'.
Here you can specify if you want to be prompted for this password or not or to let all programs have access.
Changing the settings of your passwords in this manner may stop you being prompted each time.
    Hope this helps!

  • HELP! Deleted a Keychains file. X509

a Keychains folder that contained the X509 certificates was accidentally deleted. I now cannot use Mail. How can I get this back on my system correctly?

Unless someone knows of a more convenient way of solving this problem, if you don’t have a backup, I believe you’ll have to Archive and Install Mac OS X (make sure you have enough available disk space to do it before proceeding), then install the appropriate updates.
BTW, although this has Mail implications, the issue itself has nothing to do with Mail, so you may want to ask in a more appropriate forum, such as Installation & Setup.

The usual cause of this is that a symbolic link has got broken. See Mac OS X: Issues after removing "etc" and/or "var" directory alias when started up from Mac OS 9 (you can ignore the reference to OS 9, this was a common thing with both 9 and X installed).
Unfortunately some of that KB article seems to be formatted strangely, but the relevant commands are OK. Post back if anything is unclear.

  • Network user, network home folder, and the login keychain

I've got everything set up in WGM. I can log the user onto a workstation, and the home folder maps to the appropriate network location.
What I can't seem to do, is get a login keychain working. The keychain exists, in the proper folder on the network home folder. Keychain Assistant First Aid says everything is hunky dory. The problem is that the login keychain won't show up on the keychain list, nor can I add it. If I delete the file from the networked location and run first aid again, it says the login keychain doesn't exist and proceeds to create it, just like I'd expect. Only problem is, the keychain still doesn't show and I can't use it!
So any time I try to save email passwords, Safari passwords, etc. it errors out. Going through the prompted reset dialogs doesn't seem to do anything. I'm not seeing any console messages pointing to errors, either.
    Anybody gon any ideas?

Ok then, I got one for you. Similar sort of thing. Just created a 10.6 server, created all the relevant users within WGM, then imported the home folders from the previous 10.5 server. Ensured all new UIDs matched the UIDs from the 10.5 WGM because it then simplifies permissions - i.e. all the permissions are recognised by the new server automatically for the right users.
Now for one of my users, her login keychain is never open by default. When you start Keychain Access (she's on 10.5.8 btw) you get the System keychain and the System Roots list of certificate authorities, but no login keychain.
Have checked the permissions of her ~/Library/Keychains/ folder and they're correct, as are the permissions for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain.
Double-clicking on the login.keychain file opens it up just fine in Keychain Access, however as soon as you close KA and re-open it, the login keychain's gone again.
I've tried importing a keychain, adding an existing keychain (obviously the login one) and creating a new keychain called login, none of which work - there's no error, it just ignores me.
I'd rather not create a temporary user account, transfer all the docsuments/mail etc, delete the original and recreate a new one using the old name and copy everything back, but unless someone can help me out, that's what I'm going to have to do.
There has to be some guru's out there somewhere that can help???
    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

  • Combining user Keychain with login Keychain

Just recently did a Erase and Install upgrade to Leopard on my G5 and restored my previous Keychain Access data via Backup and my MobileMe account. This has created a separate Keychain file in my user/Library/Keychain folder with my user name, resulting in a login Keychain file and a user named Keychain file.
I have had the same Keychain since Jaguar and have been using Backup and my .Mac/MobileMe account to transfer my Keychain after upgrades and between my computers ever since. I did not notice the user named Keychain until I upgraded to Tiger on my old G4 a couple of years ago. Is the user named Keychain something held over from Jaguar?
The reason ask this is because I had some slight problems with passwords after upgrading to Tiger and I think it was because of having two Keychains -- one login and another user name. Currently, under Leopard, some new Keychain items are being added to both the login and the user named Keychains and not only is this redundant, it looks like trouble just waiting to happen.
First, without a separate user account would there even be a user named Keychain?
Secondly, can I combine the login Keychain and the user named Keychain to have a single Keychain file in the user/Library/Keychain folder?
Thirdly, is there any reason I cannot copy & paste Keychain items into one Keychain and delete the other -- leaving a single login Keychain?
Currently I have over 300 items in the old user named Keychain and only 8 or 10 in the login Keychain. I have been going through the old Keychain and eliminating dead-ends and duplicates. I have also tried copying & pasting items between Keychains and it seems to work.

Anyway, if there is not much in the login keychain, set your named keychain as the login keychain (select it and then File menu>Make keychain "yourname" Default). You should move any keychain items over to the "yourname" keychain, first.
Then, delete the login.keychain and select the option to remove references and files. It should stop loading the login.keychain.
I don't know what will happen if you rename the "yourname" keychain in the finder, but you could try backing it up and renaming it login.keychain. When you open Keychain Access, you might have to reset it as the default. Backup first.
This is what I was thinking too. I think I will give it a try since there are less than a dozen items in the login keychain at the current time.
A couple of new items have been added to both the login and the usernamed keychains and I would just as soon have Keychain Access set-up as it would be from a new install -- without having to lug around a Keychain from Panther.
Thanks. I'll give it a try in a couple of days and report back.

  • Synch Exchange Keychain Entry to Login Keychain Automatically

I wish there was a Keychain Access preference that would enable me to tell a Keychain entry from an application to synchronize with the Login Keychain password automatically when changes occur.
This would fix so many problems I have with my Mac users. We use Exchange for mail and such. When Active Directory expires an account password, and the AD password is updated, then I wish the Mac Keychain would have this "magic" -- first to update itself to the new login password ---then go look for other applications that USED login credentials and update those as well.
I know about editing Keychain entries manually and I know about how to delete the Login KeyChain Files and References.
I know about changing network account passwords from System Preferences/Accounts. When done, you still have to manually edit the Exchange Keychain entry from Keychain Access.
Apple needs to improve its implementation of Active Directory to extend to application entries inside Keychain Access.
Do you guys know of any software that fills these gaps?
    Scripts?
    Thanks

So what you're saying is that it falls back on Microsoft to further improve Entourage to include SSO Exchange authentication?
Is there nothing I can do until then?
I wish I knew how other Mac managers have handled Exchange/AD password issues. Macwindows.com is somewhat vague in this regard.
All I can do is to continue to educate my users in how to manually control their network credentials. Most of them are okay with Exchange/AD. It becomes a chore for some. For a few I have to "hold their hand" -- guide them through it almost every day.
I find this dilemma most annoying.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Network user login keychain

    Guys,
Got one of my network users using his network account - he has an RSS aggregator that's continually popping up and asking to use his login keychain password. I mean "continually" - 20-25 times a day. Now the reason it needs it is fine - he's accessing feeds from one of our own wiki servers which also authenticates using his network user account, however I've set it to "Remember this password" to no avail.
I've even trashed his login keychain and created a brand new one, but still no joy. Has anyone got any incredibly helpful suggestions, lol?
This is also posted in the 10.6 server section (since that's the OD server that manages his account).
    Thanks (hopefully) in advance,
    Matt

  • Login Keychain disappeared!???

My login keychain has inexplicably disappeared. In Keychain access there is an empty box next to login where there is normally a lock. The keychain can't be accessed, the options are all greyed out. There is no "login.keychain" file in the Library. Any ideas how I can fix this? Repair doesn't work. Verifying in Keychain FirstAid gives me the following message:
    Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for Phil Steinhardt (user ID=501)

    Checked default keychain
    Checked keychain search list
Keychain ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain could not be found
    Checked contents of /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain
Problems were found; you should choose the Repair option to fix them

    Thanks. Phil.

Copy it from your bootable backup. No such animal? Then, I believe you're out of luck.

  • Login.keychain and mobile user accounts

After removing a corrupt login.keychain file in a mobile user account, the user could no longer log in to their account when off site. What account login information is kept in the keychain file of a mobile account?

I don't have problems syncing other files that are also system packages, like iPhoto ones... although I have a terrible suspicion that again the sync agent only sees a single file, not a bundle.
I assume that the OS doesn't have any problem with packages since they are used pretty much elsewhere and they are basically a folder with a specific file inside that "forces" the OS to show us as a single file, instead of letting us see directly the content.
Even the new disk image format that Apple recommends to be used in order to speed up Time Machine backups (.sparcebundle) is based in package (or bundles, whatever you prefer to call them)
The main issue here might be the folder structure inside.
If you do a "show package content" and, for instance, check the thumbnails folder, I can easily see some chars that might create some confusion if not properly escaped during the sync, like on this example:
    My Aperture.aplibrary/Thumbnails/%pARYo%fT52I77jmdf8mqQ/AP.Thumbnails
(Those "%" are so prone to errors if not properly handled)
Time Machine doesn't have any problem with both packages and those chars, so I truly hope that they use TM tech and improve the way that the syncing agent work.
Anyways, Aperture seemed a nice app.
I'm really sad that I can't use it because of this... specially when I'm considering getting a new digital camera.
I understand that it was recently released so let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update (to either Aperture or Mac OS X Server) in the next few months.
    Take care.

  • Is it okay that I have another login keychain folder?

I was having some keychain issues with Safari and when I verified within keychain it failed, so I used the keychain repair option, and now there is a new file in my keychains folder labeled "login_renamed.keychain". Previously I had only a "login.keychain" file. Is there anything wrong with this or additional repairs that I should make?
    Thanks

    hi xs4is,
when using TDM with logic u can assign chunks of 32 tracks to different drives - it was too large chunks for me that is one reason for switching to protools where I can assign each track I want to any drive I want - e.g. 32 tracks could be assigned to 32 physical hard drives....
I dont know waht it is like in logic native - go to the set record path window and see if u can assign to more locaitons...I know in the tdm environment in logic the menu was not there to assign from 33-64 but when I would try to record enable track 33 or above the menu dialog would appear automatically - in os 9 I had the choice to assign 32 track chunks where I wanted
In have written emagic /Apple a million times for a disk allocation system that is up to date as Logic's is a Joke IMHO - only off course:-))))))

  • Restore login keychain

Somehow the login keychain got trashed. How can I create a new one and set it to default. The old login keychain file still exists but is, of course, encrypted. It may or may not be useful. I created a new default keychain but it is a pain to type the password anytime an app wants to use it. Bob

Occasionally I will have a keychain run amok and my standard is to drag it out of the ~/user home/Library/Keychains onto the Desktop and reboot.
A new keychain will be created on login. I then add passwords as needed.
    YMMV
If you are uncomfortable moving the keychain, make a copy or rename it in Terminal as shown in the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306862
