Deleted mail keeps on staying in account

I keep on deleting emails and emptying the bin but it stays in there! what can I do?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
In Snow Leopard, OS X 10.6.8, deleted emails are erased within the Mail program, not the Trash Bin.
Mail, Mailbox, Erase Deleted Items, In All Accounts...
NOT ILLUSTRATED ABOVE -- You can also select email accounts individually, and erase deleted items, if you have more than one account.

  • Deleted mail keeps reloading in my Drafts folder.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, my email keeps putting old deleted messages (usually the same 5 messages) in my Drafts folder. I delete them there, but they just keep coming back. Anyone know how to fix this?
I am running Mavericks on my MacBook Pro with Mail 7.3.

Deleted mail can reappear if the folder has not been compacted frequently.

'' If you don't compact your folders regularly, performance can slow to a crawl, you can't store new messages anymore, start losing parts of messages or have deleted messages resurrected.''
Suggest you move all good emails out of Inbox to other suitable folders for organising.
Then delete all emails you do not want.
then right click on Inbox and select 'compact'.
    Then empty the Deleted folder.
Also Empty and compact the Junk folder.

  • My deleted mail keeps returning to my in box, even if I delete my trash.

I have my inbox at the minimum amount of mail in settings.  also to remove my trash after one day.  Mail keeps coming back to my inbox even though I delete it manually from trash.  drives me crazy.

I didn't mention this is on an ipad2.

  • Deleted mail keeps reappearing in my in box, apparentlt randomly

I am frequently receiving advice I have new mail only to find the new mail is in fact mail dating back some days or weeks. This may be 1 mail or multiple mails, perhaps up to 30 and is a real nuisance, Any advice most welcome, thanks. This only affecting Thunderbird, not Bell / Sympatico.

  • Deleted mail keeps coming back in to mail

Using mail on Imac, Laptop, ipad and iphone.
When I move a message to a folder on the imac it keeps coming back in to the mail account.  It appears to work OK on the laptop when I move a message.  All the settings appear to be the same.  Any idea what is going on?
    Thanks

An update to my previous questions.  This problem I think started after Maverick was installed.  Also if I just try to delete a message it will pop back in.  Appreciate someone telling me what is going on?
    Thanks

  • Deleted Mail keeps returning to INBOX - please advise!

Please help me. I am trying to clean out my inbox because it has gotten out of control, I have over 4000 messages and I am trying to delete them in bulk.
This is what I have been doing: I highlight messages then select delete. Then, I go to the mailbox menu and select permanently delete messages - i have been doing this periodically throughout the entire process.
Then, at some point Mail quits unexpectedly. When I reopen the application ALL of the messages that I thought I had deleted are back!!
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Assuming this is a POP account and you can somehow manage to do the following without Mail crashing (you may take Mail offline to avoid new mail being downloaded while you try to fix the problem), try this:
    1. Create a custom “On My Mac” mailbox (Mailbox > New Mailbox).
    2. Instead of deleting the messages you don’t want to keep, move the messages you do want from Inbox to this newly created mailbox. Make sure that they are transferred correctly and you don’t miss anything.
    3. Quit Mail.
    4. In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder.
    5. Locate INBOX.mbox and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after fixing the problem).
    6. Open Mail. A new (empty) INBOX.mbox will automatically be created within the account folder.
    7. Move the messages in the “On My Mac” mailbox back to Inbox if that’s where you want them to be.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Deleted mail keeps returning

when I delete messages in mail they keep coming back 3 or 4 times.I have rebuild mailboxes , but that doesn't help.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Check to see if you have the option "Store deleted messages on the server" enabled. You can find this under Preferences->Accounts->Mailbox Behaviors. I was having the same issue with emails popping back up after I had deleted them. Unchecking this checkbox resolved the issue. For some reason if the deleted message is being stored server side, the flag isn't being thrown that the message was deleted. As a result, the server thinks it's still valid email and continues to serve it to you. I still think this is a problem on Apple's end, because this behavior was occurring across all of my emails accounts: iCloud, GMail and private servers. So it's not the provider, it's the way Apple Mail does things.

  • Deleted mail keeps downloading -

I keep getting 5000+ emails that have already being deleted back in my incoming, new mail folder...HELP

Does your email provider offer a Webmail interface (ie, Gmail or Apple's iCloud)? If so then try accessing that and deleting the messages there. In addition, go to the Accounts section of the Mail preferences and in the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab for the account with this problem (which may be all of them) uncheck the option to "Store deleted messages on the server" and also set the time frame for when to permanently erase deleted messages to a shorter one (e.g., a day instead of the default "month" setting).

  • Deleted mail keeps returning gmail

Deleted email in Gmail keep returning after I delete them from my junk mail. I'm running Mail Version 7.3 (1878.6) and OS X 10.9.4.
I've seen older posts on the Apple Community pages outlining the same problems. I've tried the various solutions:  CMD X (cut), delete/reinstall Gmail, delete originals from Gmail account, etc.  None of this works, and the now the list of old/deleted emails is growing by the week.
Anyone got any ideas?  And why did Apple never address this problem in any of its updates?

See the comment by Stephen Adams in this thread, and by William Lloyd in this thread.

  • Cannot permanently delete mails from trash in gmail account

When emails are deleted using default Mac OS X Mavericks mail.app, they move to the trash folder as expected and when I delete them from the trash folder, they dissapear as supposed. Unfortunatelly, after logging in to the gmail web-based version, the emails are still visible in trash folder. They are sort of hidden, because they are visible only in web-based version, not in any smtp client. Interesting is, that iPhone mail app deletes the mails correctly. This issue was tested on 3 computers (iMac 27" i5 late 2010, Macbook Pro Retina 15" i7 early 2013, Macbook Pro Retina 13" i5 late 2013), 3 user accounts, and 3 gmail accounts. Do you have any suggestions?

Okay, that solved it, except that I had to input rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
and NOT "Trashes." It accepted your version of the command, but it didn't do anything discernible. I noticed that entering Trashe and trying to press tab to autocomplete didn't work, suggesting that maybe Trashes doesn't exist. However, trying to autocomplete with fewer letters typed indicated to me that Trash DOES exist, and so I went ahead with that and it worked.

  • Mail keeps hanging on .Mac account

    Hello,
I have a .Mac account and running Mail with Tiger on an Intel iMac. Most of the time it works just fine. But lately it's been driving me crazy. My two other mail accounts (one POP and the other IMAP) work just fine. But .Mac keeps hanging, refusing to connect to the server. When I try to quit Mail, I can't. I have to force quit it to be able to move on. If I restart the computer, things are OK. But within a couple of hours, it happens again! Any help would be appreciated. (I've checked and my connections are correct [password, etc.]; I can access my .Mac account from the Web, but, increasingly, not on Mail.)
    Again, Thanks
iMac Core Duo 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83 GHz, 1.5 gig RAM

I am presently afflicted with this mail ailment as well. Sporadic and acute attacks. I am a student and it is unraveling me. Help!

  • TS3276 Deleted mail keeps returning

I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.  In MAIL Gmail All Mail I keep deleting and removing from Trash but the messages keep returning over and over again.

try rebuilding your mailbox.  it may just be that your local storage has gotten out of whack with the online storage; rebuilding should fix that.

  • Deleted Mail keeps reappearing?

This is probably going to be the worst question as I have no knowledge of computers whatsoever
But I just set up my hotmail account on my new Macbook Pro and every time I delete an email, it reappears whenever I go out of the app or hit "Inbox"
Any ideas how to fix it? And I only have the one email account

Does it happen to every message you try to delete or only to some of them? What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
You may be able to get rid of those messages in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X) (for best results do it with one message or just a few at a time), but you should remove them from the server first if they’re still there.
I am not using Apple's Junk Mail Filter.
Does that mean you’re using something else instead, i.e. do you have any Mail plug-ins?

  • Deleted mail keeps coming back

I go thru the process of deleting an email message then I go to the trash and delete it from there as well, often when I start up my touch another time I still see the deleted email appear as if I never deleted it before. Any help out there?

    Hi,
What account are you using for Mail? My GMail works fine, so maybe it is just your account. Are you sure when you check your emails you are in "Inbox" and not "Trash"?
    Hope this helps!

  • Deleted mail keeps getting redelivered

I check my mail, go through and delete the unwanted mail, and all seems fine. Then I'll check mail the following day, and all the messages I deleted get delivered again as if I never received them. Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?
I've tried varying the setting in mail but no luck.

After you delete them from the Inbox, go to that account's Trash and empty it.
