Deleted masters, time machine?

Long story short, I deleted pictures from Aperture 3 and now I need them back, especially the masters.  I do have time machine though and should have a backup of the Aperture 3, before I messed it up, right?  Will time machine restore Aperture 3 to how it was before my deletions?  Is there anything I need to do make sure restoring from time machine goes smoothly?

Thanks so much for your help.  I did what you said to do and I was hoping this would work, but, unfortunately, it's still not showing me my missing pix.  I can see blank spaces where the pictures are supposed to be, I can see the yellow triangle with the exclamation point inside.  AND I also see what looks like a little price tag next to the triangle in all of my "missing" pictures too.  Sorry, I know these things mean something, I'm a little embarrassed to say, I'm just overwhelmed and afraid I've lost a lot of pix.
I should try and explain a little more.  This all happened because I was trying to move pictures from my laptop's internal drive to an external drive.  After I moved some pictures from the internal drive to the external drive, I then deleted them off of my interlan drive, thinking that I had successfully moved them, thus allowing me to free up some much needed internal drive space.  But, when I then went to see the pix on the external drive after deleting those pix from my internal drive, I just get blank spaces and don't know how or if I can reconnect the master files.
Any and all help/advice is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

  • I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.

I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.  The file is about 400GB and my MacBook has been trying to delete it for 5h now. It still says "deleting" but has not given me a "time remaining" yet. Any idea of what I could do????

You should not attempt to delete backups using the Finder. The result can be a corrupted backup.
I recommend you let it complete, no matter how long it takes. That could be days, if your TC is connected via wireless.
It is not necessary to delete backups, since Time Machine will delete old backups some time after they have been deleted from your source volume. For more information read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's explanation here: Should I delete old backups? If so, How?

  • Can't Completely Delete a Time Machine Backup

How do I completely delete a Time Machine Backup? In Snow Lepord I had no problem with deleting a Time Machine Backup. I back up my HHD on a external HHD. Since using Time Machine with Lion the back ups are not being fully deleted. My trash can each time I connect my external HHD is displaying deleted files. When I go to delete from trash I am told there are locked items. So I select the option to delete locked items, hear the deleted trash can sound but the trash can still indicates the files haven't been perminetly deleted yet. What is my problem here?

None of that worked. I used the Terminal method. No good.
What does "no good" mean?  What happened, or didn't happen?  That should empty the trash on the disk. As mentioned, it may take a long time, if there's lots of files there.
Repairing will be no good to be cause my external HD contains everything on one partition. The backups are not on there own partition like that site assumes. Repairing did no good.
Do you mean you didn't try it?  If so, try it.  It may or may not be able to repair them, but it's worth a try.

    Hi Folks,
Accidentally deleted my Time Machine backkups but all files are in the Trash. I am copying my files from Trash folder to another Portable Drive just incase I will not be able to restore my files as Put Back is not working because seems Time Machine backups is a part large database.
Is there anyway I can restore the files to Time Machine again? If there is, could you please tell me step by step ! If there is not any procedures, please advise me what should I do in this stage?

  • I accidentally deleted my time machine backup

I accidentally deleted my time machine backup file (I only had made one). Can anyone tell me how do I recover it? I don´t see it in my time machine travel window

Data Recovery from time machine is something tough job even the best data recovery software can not do so because the complex structue in time machine is not understood by any data recovery software which Apple uses. Time Machine puts your backup in a sparse bundle disk image (backups.backupdb). However you can try some data recovery software which may recover someting from your trash. There are software having demo version which can show you the recovered files on preview if you found any of your important file then there is a good chance to recover your data and your good Luck..REMEMBER FIRST TRY THEN BUY

  • How do I delete a Time Machine back-up from my trash?

I use an external hard disc for my Time Machine back-ups.
In order to make some room on the external hard disc for some other files I wanted to store while I reformatted their original disc, I moved the Time Machine bach-ups into my iMac Trash.
Now when I try to delete thes old unwanted back-ups I get this message -
There are some locked items in the Trash. Do you want to remove all the items, including the locked ones, or just the unlocked items?
I've tried selececting Remove All Items but they just stay there.
I tried to darg them out onto the desktop but although that creates a new folder, the back-ups stay in the trash.
I've tried switching Time Macine off in the preferences bu that doesn't help.
Can anyone help me with emptying them?

  • How can I delete a Time Machine backup which did not complete?

I was running a Time Machine backup when the disc got unmounted. Therefore I know all of the data is not backed up.
I would like to delete that entry and rerun "Back Up Now" to start over.
I tried deleting the folder with the latest time stamp on the drive and ran "Back Up Now". There was a very small amount of data that it then backed up.
Obviously there is a large gap in manually managing this process and I would like to know the best fix.
    Thanks in advance.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    tmutil compare | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear below what you entered.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.
Caution: Under some conditions, tmutil may falsely flag files as not having been backed up when in fact they have been. It can be confused by multi-linked files, or by files with a modification date earlier than the one in the snapshot. This will not be an issue for most users. If the results of the above procedure surprise you, inspect your snapshots directly.

  • Accidentally deleted the Time Machine back up drive!

After a hard drive faliure, I was trying to get my new hard drive ready to import from an external hard drive through Time Machine. In the process, I deleted my back up drive (the availble room is the same as hard drive's capacity). What I'm confused about, is that there was no warning and 4 years worth of data disapeared all of a sudden. No bar showing the data is being deleted or at least moved to the trash can. Is this possible and if yes, is there any way I can retrieve those data?
    Thanks,
    Amir

DId you Erase or Format it via Disk Utility?  If so, yes there was a warning.
If not, what did you do?
You may be able to recover most of the data, but it will not be easy.  See Data Recovery

  • Can I safely delete old Time Machine back ups?

I use a 1TB external drive for Time Machine but it's nearly full. There are 43 different back ups on the drive, can I safely delete all but the most recent one or two? I realize I would not be able to restore my system from a deleted back up but I can't think of a reson I'd want to. Would greatly appreciate any insight on this, thanks!
p.s. Why does Time Machine keep so many back ups in the first place? I can't find anything in preferences to limit the number of stored back ups. Is there a way to limit the number?

    Hello:

It makes no sense to delete old backups.  Time Machine automatically deletes backups if it needs space.  If you start deleting backups, you will do it ONE at a time.
Why does Time Machine keep so many back ups in the first place?
    It is designed that way.
Is there a way to limit the number?
    No.
Why are you having a problem with the design of Time Machine?  Do you need, for some reason, extra space on the external drive?  If that is the case, you should have partitioned the external.

  • I deleted my Time Machine backups using Finder, now the trash won't empty

    Hello
I've just been to the Apple genius bar and thought this was solved, there the trash emptied no problem.  But I realized that the problem has to do with two external drives that have time machine backups on them.  I deleted some of the older back ups because my drive was filling up and I didn't see any other way to delete them.
Now they can't be reinstated back where they were, and the trash won't empty using any method.  I've even tried the Terminal SUMO methods on here and other sites, and the Trashi It app, and Cocktail app - nothing works.
The only solutions I've found say to wipe your back up drive completely and start over but that is NOT an option as I have ALL of my photos on there.  I use my external drive for my images (I am a photographer) and use time machine to back up my MacBookPro onto there as well.  I had no idea deleting those was going to be an issue.  Now I've tried to delete other things on both external drives and they are all stuck in the trash.
    Someone please help!

Not a good idea, as you've learned the hard way.
And especially bad in the same partition, as you can't just erase the TM partition.
Plus, how do you back up the images?
For best results, consider getting another external HD; one for the images, and one for TM.  Then you can have Time Machine back up both your Mac and the external.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations.
But my question for Pondini is this - if I use that command will it erase that entire drive, or just the trash on it?
Just the trash folders.  I've reworded those instructions a bit, hopefully more clearly and safely, and put them in #E6 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Can An Individual Item be Deleted from Time Machine Backup?

I'm beginning to notice that my disk space is getting limited on my external drive that Time Machine uses to do its backups. Is it possible to go into TimeMachine and delete individual items i.e., a movie etc. in order to regain disk space? If it does a back up of each movie or TV show, and at some point I no longer want/need them so I delete them, they are still on my TimeMachine Backup. I would like to also delete it from the Backup. Is that possible?
    Thanks !

It's probably not a good idea to change anything in the TM file system. The data are not actually stored as files but for the first time. After that they are stored as "deltas" or changes. When TM restores a file, it uses the original and all the bits and pieces to recreate the most recent file. Disturbing the TM structure is dangerous.
TM will automatically start deleting old files when it gets full, so don't be concerned with filespace.
If any old files are on TM that you don't want it to delete, simply restore them, let TM back them up again, and TM will eventually delete the old original copies, leaving your new ones.
If you have a continual problem with the TM disk getting full, then you need a larger disk.

  • Almost deleted my Time Machine backup

This is my very first post so I might be missing something.
I have an external disk for Time Machine.
I made a manual backup on Dec 28 and I wanted to delete one particluar file, so I right-clicked it and selected "Delete Backup", which was a WRONG button to push.
I accidentally ordered my Mac to delete the "entire entry for Dec 28."
I then got out of the Star Wars interface, and clicked the X(cancel) button on the "Preparing to delete stuff" progress bar.
Now I don't see the Dec 28 entry in the Star Wars screen, plus the Last Backup indicated by the dropdown menu shows the one before Dec 28.
Fortunately, nearly everything was untouched. Nearly, that is, the timestamp showed that (Time Machine bkup dir)/usr/share/man/man1/ was being altered (zapped?) when I cancelled deleting. There might be other dirs gone, though, my valuable items seem all OK, by the looks of the backup directory itself.
I haven't tried "Back Up Now" because I fear that the Dec-28 entry might be discarded.
Is it possible to get back that backup entry?

first, you should back up regularly. backing up once in 4 months does not qualify in any way. secondly, you should NOT use TM backups as a storage tool. a backup is a second copy, not the only copy. and this is especially true for TM. using it for storage is highly likely to result in a loss of data because TM constantly thins past backups (which it does silently and without any warning). also, when it runs out of space it starts deleting old backups to make room for new ones. it's supposed to warn you about it the first time it does it but that warning is easy to miss and it sometimes doesn't show up at all.
so if you have something on that backup you deleted from the main drive, restore it from TM and do another full backup. and don't use TM backups for storage from now on.

  • Deleted a time machine backup and space hasn't freed up

I'm having a n issue where I have deleted my entire time machine backup from an external G-Drive and the space hasn't free from the drive.  It is a 2tb drive and the backup was somewhere in the 700gb range.  I have about 890gb in other files and remaining space of about 63gb.  The drive was connected through my Airport Extreme and have not been able to see it in the trash so I can't empty it.  I've also tried re connecting the drive back to my iMac and trash can still appears empty and the remaining space is still at 63gb.  I am using latest version of OS X Yosemite on a late '12 iMac.  Let me know if I missed anything that you need and thanks in advance for your help

Your problem is more likely to be Yosemite.. get another computer running any other OS so you can actually see the sparsebundle.. you have deleted the files inside the container but you haven't thrown the container away.. Yosemite has huge permissions issues with files on external or network drives.. or perhaps that is too specific.. Yosemite has huge issues!!
If you have earlier OS or even a windows computer (you would have to share the drive to the network).. and try and delete from there.. Use something other than Yosemite. Otherwise you will need to offload the files and format and then copy the files back.

  • When is it safe to delete older Time Machine back-up files?

I have a 2 TB back-up drive for Time Machine back-ups. It is half full. Is it safe to delete some of the older files? If so, which ones? If the first back-up is a full back-up and not an incremental back-up, I would not want to delete it would I?
