Deleted messages returned to inbox after keying command shift L incorrectly

I was in the process of flagging a message and for learning purposes attempted to do it with the keystroke combination rather than simply selecting the acton. silly me! The combination of flagging a message is command shift L but instead of using the shift key I used the page up or arrow up key. suddenly a bunch of messages that had been deleted returned in a grayed out state. I tried re-deleting them, selecting specfic inbox folders for example. I had some success but not all will go away. and now I just labeled a new message as junk and the message goes to the junk folder but a grayed out message with a flag symbol stays in the inbox and won't go away. What did I do when I messed up that key combination? I looked at some of the other related issues on this discussion. I did some research into the preferences and into whether or not there are the correct deleted messages folders in the pop account folders. I found some inconsistancies but since I've never been to those folders before I don't know if things were any different before my keystroke mistake. I just want to go back to the default situation that I had set up before this booboo. I had created 3 pop accounts and I may have had some preferences on the deleted items folders, but essentially deleted messges were going to the trash and I think they were in the trash. I probably hadn't been emptying the trash. Weird, on my PC when i deleted a message it was gone. with Mac they seem to be in a trash folder which must then be emptied. interesting. (I am very new to Macs)

> Cutting the messages seems to disappear them for now...
but I don't trust where they are going.
What do you mean? They don’t go anywhere (well, they go to a temporary storage area so that you can paste them). That’s precisely why it works.
I want to understand why the delete button doesn't function as it should.
Probably because there is something wrong with the messages themselves that prevents Mail from being able to handle them properly in general and from moving them to any other mailbox in particular. If Edit > Cut didn’t work (and sometimes it doesn’t), you’d have to manually get rid of the associated *.emlx files and re-create the index afterwards.

  • Messages remain in inbox after being deleted or moved to other folders

Spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning out my in box, deleting and filing emails, only to find everything right back where it was? I have an exchange account and have never had this happen. Nothing has changed with anything on account or computer.

I should mention that the transferred message also remains in my Inbox even if I delete it from my Inbox after having transferred it to another mailbox. Once I "delete" it from the Inbox, it will turn gray (from black), and will disappear if I hit Apple-L to "Hide Deleted Messages." But it will be right back again in the Inbox, as black as ever, the next time I return from another mailbox to the Inbox, even if I have chosed "Erase all Deleted Messages" in the meantime.
This is very annoying. I'll sure appreciate help.
    Thank you.

  • How can I set it to delete messages off my server after they download?

How can I set it to delete messages off my server after they download?

IMAP email is server based. The messages stay on the server and just view them remotely with an email client like Thunderbird. If you want to keep a copy on your computer you need to move a copy of the email message to a folder under Local Folders. If you delete the message off the server, it is going to be gone otherwise.
The delete from the server option is a POP email server. It does not apply with IMAP email.

Thanks for the instructions.  I got as far as Disk Utility, then hit Verify but couldn't find Repair Disk, the Mail icon was there but couldn't click on it.
Someone else suggested I hit the control button then delete which did work.  Perhaps it was a combination of closing out of Mail and hitting the Control button/delete that helped?  Weird............
    thanks again,

  • IPod Mail 1.1.3 - Return to inbox after delete message

    Hi.
I'm wondering if there's a way to have the iPod return to the Inbox after deleteing a message, instead of what it currently does which is moving on to the next message. This has horribly detremental effects as if the next message happens to have been an un-read one, and I didn't realize it and just back out after deleting the message, the message isn't marked as unread anymore.
If this isn't available in the current update, could this please be added for the next update?
    Thank you for any information.

No, there's no option for that.
Apple doesn't read these boards, generally speaking, so send feedback:

  • Why do deleted messages return to my inbox later? How can I fix this problem?

Hours or sometimes days after I delete messages, they are returned to my inbox. Usually it's only one or two, so I simply delete them a second time. But this morning almost 30 returned.

When deleted messages reappear it is likiely that the Inbox is corrupted.
If you don't compact your folders regularly, performance can slow to a crawl, you can't store new messages anymore, start losing parts of messages or have deleted messages resurrected.
    This is what I suggest.
    * Move all good emails out of the Inbox into suitable folders for organising.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * When Inbox is empty, right click on the Inbox folder and select 'Compact'.
This will remove all traces of 'marked as deleted' emails.
    * Then right click on the Deleted folder and select 'Empty Deleted'
    * Then right click on the Deleted folder and select 'Compact'

  • Deleted emails returning to Inbox & no emails in Trash

I have had this issue for a while now.  I am using a Macbook Pro with Retina and the Yosemite OS, purchased in 5/2014.
After I delete several emails I often click out of my Inbox and click into one of my email subfolders or Trash or Junk mail...It doesn't matter where I click into.
I then return to my Inbox and all of the emails I just spent a good amount of time deleting have returned to my Inbox.
So a big time waster to have to go through and deleted all of these previously deleted emails.
What is the fix for this issue?
Secondly, I have set my email preferences to "Permanently erase deleted messages to Never", yet my Trash folder is empty.  There should be many emails in my Trash at this time.
Third, emails that I have read and so are no longer bolded in my Inbox have disappeared.  Where to?  I don't know.
What can I do about these three issues?
Overall, it really seems that my email is unstable using the Macbook Pro.  Quite frustrating.

Hi Eric, at this stage it is only happening on the mac with snow leopard, but the maverick mac has had its issues with other weird faults that myself and the other party's husband have nutted out some fixes for. I believe the snow leopard mac was doing a combo of dragging mail and right click move to folders etc to sort her mail out when this problem was recurring. I did look thru the support section here and one of the fixes was just to do the right click method which i suggested and so far all the mail that had played up originally are now staying in the folders they are supposed to be. I would like to say this fixed it but i will wait a few days first, seeing that there is also the spinning wheel that takes forever for this particular account to fetch and send mail that was not happening before i don't believe i am out of the woods next. Some extra info...on the problem computer there are 6 gmail accounts running thru macmail and all are imap enabled and generally have been trouble free, the amount of mail in the mail folder is staggering around 65gig plus which my other half protects with a passion ( don't suggest having a cleanup, it would be easier to take on a charging elephant)
Some of the other things i am contemplating are..... deleting the mailplist, deleting and reinstalling the problem email acc and also a fix i found last night that involves "delete all the files in the following folder: ~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/.OfflineCache" , not necessarily in that order. It is nice to be able to compose this at a sensible hour of the day not 1.30am like last night with a semi deranged wife wanting instant answers. I hope Eric this gives you enough info to hopefully point me in the right direction.
    cheers Andy

  • 1 year old messages return to inbox when I change boxes

I actually had this problem in Tiger and to my great surprise and disappointment it continued when I upgraded to Leopard.
Any time I go from one inbox or folder and then back to my mail inbox, a message will appear from roughly 1 year ago at the top of my inbox. The old messages seem to come in the sequence they came in a year ago - so I'll look in a mail folder and then return to my inbox to see a message from Nov. 17th 2007 from 10:25am. I delete it, and then if I repeat the process another message will come from the same date but 10:28am or whatever. If I don't delete them then no new (old) messages come.
I use 1and1.com pop mail service and those messages are long-gone from my mail server. It's taking them from either my archive or junk/trash folders.
If I erase junk and trash folders, then only message that are still on my system (in various folders) show up. They can be sent, archived or in a daily subscription folder that I want to keep.
    Any thoughts?

Try rebuilding your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
    3. Restart Safari and wait for it to import your existing messages. When it's done, check to see if the problem persists. And you should empty the Trash in Mail when you quit the program. You can change that automatic behavior in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors (check the box to move deleted messages to a separate folder and choose 'Erase deleted messages when:' "Quitting Mail from the pop-down menu.

  • Deleted messages remain in inbox

This morning I received four email messages from the same person. One appeared in my inbox 3 times, the other 3 appeared 9 times. When I deleted them the content disappeared but the subject and sender's name etc remained in my inbox list. After deleting they went a grey colour, but then they reverted to black. I tried sending them to the junk folder, but they remained in the inbox list shaded light brown, and didn't appear in the junk folder. I tried moving them to another mailbox, but they didn't move. I went to my Mail folder but I can't find them anywhere there. The header on my inbox tells me I have 114 messages, which includes the 30 in question.
All other messages appear to be acting normally. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same problem – my Mac was part-way through downloading an email from eBay into my POP account when the power went off. Now the message is stuck in my Inbox, when I click delete it turns grey but doesn’t disappear and is back to being black next time I go into Mail. Show Deleted Messages is not checked in the View menu. The file for this message is not visible in my user Library – Mail – Inbox folder. The body of the mail is blank.
Anyone any ideas? The message has obviously got corrupted on the way in due to the power out, but how can I get rid of it? It’s really annoying!
    Thanks.

  • Httmpmail messed up Mail. Deleted messages stay in inbox now.

Alright, I already had Daniel Parnell's httpmail hotmail plugin installed. I saw he had a newer version and downloaded and installed accordingly. Then when I opened Mail, I saw that all my messages for the past two days were gone. Also, when I delete a message from my inbox in Mail, it greys out but still stays there, not moving to Trash.
I went into library>mail>bundles and deleted the httpmail plugin and restarted Mail but still have the same problem. I dont care about the stupid plugin now, I just want my messages back and want my Mail program to operate correctly again.
What can I do to fix this?

Try rebuilding your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing mail. When that's done, everything should be back to normal.

  • Deleted email returns to inbox

For the last few days, whenever I attempt to delete an email I get the following message " the message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash".  These messages will dissapear, then reappear later that day.  They are no longer in my Outlook Inbox on my desk top computer.  Any ideas?

Move the offending file to the Trash and make sure that Trash does not contain any files you may want to retain.
    Shut down Mail.
From the Finder click on Go>Home.
    Double click on the Library.
option drag the Mail folder to the desktop.
This should make a copy of the Mail folder.
Once you are sure that Mail is backed up, open the Mail folder in the Library.
Open the Mailboxes folder and open the Deleted Messages.mbox>Messages folder.
Drag any messages in the folder to the trash can in the Dock.
    Empty Trash.
Now reopen the Mail folder and locate the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 and the Envelope Index files and drag them to the desktop.
Next close all windows and open the Mail program.

  • Mail and Address Book: Deleted email returns to Inbox

    Hello all and happy holidays...
That is until just a while ago, my Mail keeps receiving two similar emails (one with attachment) of Xmas Specials and offerings from one of the vendor/shop I visited. When I click on the mail itself, I just see the "loading..." in the message body, no pics, no text, assuming it is a large graphic-based or something email, *so I tried deleting them, only to have them re-appear again in the IN box.*
*I just simply can't get rid of them!* Every time I delete them, they disappear from the IN box, I click the Trash icon, they are there, I further delete them, and when I click back the IN box, they are back again
It has become an annoyance! I call the shop and they said their marketing dept will take me off the email list, but they can't help me on the immediate problem, *how to trash these email away permanently?* They actually ask me to call AppleCare Hotline...! Gosh, I know about AppleCare Hotline and they will go through you the 1001 steps to diagnose your system one step at a time, I just thought this is the vendor's "problem" and they should be able to fix the problem for me!
So anyone, hope someone's home and getting online here, if you know how to, please help.
Thanks a zillion and Merry Xmas!

  • My Iphone is deleting messages from my inbox once I open them on my laptop in microsoft outlook. How do I stop this?

Im not a techno person at all... so Im really struggling with my iphone at the moment. I have two mail inboxes, one for my hotmail and one for my work email. The hotmail one works fine. The other is a pain in the butt. Once I receive an email in the work inbox on my iphone I can see it, but the second I go to my laptop and open it in microsoft outlook it gets deleted from my iphone inbox.
Anyone know how to fix this so it stays on my phone?

Your other account has to be changed to an IMAP type, like Hotmail.  POP type accounts are not designed for multiple clients.
