Deleted most camera roll pics but backup management says it's still 3.7 GB
I really need to run an iCloud backup but I'm over the 5 GB data limit.
iCloud keeps the last three backups of your iPhone, so this is the reason why Camera Roll may be taking up a lot of space.
If you need to make a backup, you can try removing the old backup. To do this, open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage, choose your device backup and select "Delete backup".

In order to install IOS7 on my 4S, I need more storage of 3.1GB and presently have only 1.3 GB. My biggest usage is the camera roll at 9.8GB. Photo stream is at 584 MB. My question is -should I delete the camera roll pics? They are saved on my computer.
At 1.3GB available, your storage space is getting very thin no matter what you do further. As long as you have the photo's in the camera roll saved on your computer you can delete them. Just make sure first that they are in your photo software. If updating in iTunes, just backup/sync first, then update, and that will save the camera roll in the backup as well.
At only 1.3GB you eventually are going to find yourself unable to install or update some app, or unable to take any new pictures, or some other limitation that will force you to free up space anyway. So now, before updating, sounds like a good time to make sure everything is backed up or stored somewhere else, and clean house a bit, then update. -
OK, here's a fun challenge for everyone out there. My wife got an iPhone 5 for Christmas (2012) last year, and we purchased the iCloud backup to go with the new phone. She was backing up her iPhone as usual (when plugged in and connected to Wifi), including the camera roll (we didn't figure out how to use the Photostream feature until AFTER we had to reset her phone as described below).
So...in April 2013, she had to reset her phone--wipe out everything on it--and start over again. At that time, we discovered the photostream feature, and have been backing up pics from her iPhone to my PC (and a portable hard drive) since April. But, we do NOT have our pics from Jan-Apr 2013, and are both kind of freaking out that we lost 3 months of our kids lives (including both birthdays). I believe they are stored on iCloud (as part of a back up image from her iPhone stored on iCloud). I would like to get those pictures, but the only way I've seen from user threads to get those pictures is to RE-load a backup image on her iPhone, then take the camera roll pics and put all the pictures on a shared photostream so that I can then get them on my PC and save them off. But, to do that, my wife would have to put her phone back 8 months, which as anyone could understand is not something to be done lightly (it is her work phone also).
So, long story short, we have some pics on iCloud that I need to get to---how do we get back those pictures? Can someone from Apple pull down the backup image to get to the pics, then put them on our iCloud photostream?

I add all photos taken on camera roll to individual albums. However, once a photo is deleted from camera roll, it's also deleted from the albums where it also resides. Is there a way to delete or clear out the camera roll but keep them in albums?

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.

2. Transfer content
Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
6. Set up as new
Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.

How do you delete albums from an I-phone 4,only able to delete from camera roll,but not the other albums
How did the photos get onto the phone ? Only photos taken with the phone or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the device. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing.

I need more space on my iPhone to update to iOS 7.0.6. I was able to import and then delete my Camera Roll but not my Photo Library. How do I do that?
To delete your photo library you need to connect to iTunes, then remove the selection for the images, then sync the device.
While you are connected to iTunes do the update through iTunes. It takes much less memory as the update is loaded onto your computer, unpacked, then sent to the device. -
I just changed my email address in my iphone4s so had to change I appleId and iCloud ID so wat in turn happened was that it wiped out my contacts information and deleted my camera roll pictures is there any way I can retrieve my data,
Use your old Apple ID to get them back.

Where are my Camera Roll pics n videos saved in iTunes(Laptop) when I backed up my iPhone to iTunes?
I backed up my iPhone today in order to save my Camera Roll pictures and videos safely in my Laptop and then I deleted them from my iPhone to make some free space.... And I want those pictures and videos in future back into my iPhone. So I know I must restore my iPhone from back up to get back the camera roll pics and vids. But what I want to know is, where are those pictures and videos saved in my Windows Laptop when I backed up my iPhone to iTunes today? There must be some folder of iTunes or somewhere in the iTunes software where they must be saved after backing up. I want to see them on my Laptop now but how can I do that?
I did not import them, I backed up my iPhone to my Laptop using iTunes.
I want to see those pictures on my Laptop since I deleted them from my iPhone after backing up. Where are they in my Laptop now???they are in the backup file that, sadly, is not accesible unless you restore it to a phone... if you want/need access to them, you should import them

Please let me know how can i view the backed up content on iClouds like the camera roll pics, since i have the pics there on iCloud and i want to save on the space on my iPad i want to delete it from my iPad if i can see it over iCloud.Even though iCloud can back up some content it is intended more to keep multiple iOS devices synced up rather than being a place to back up your content. The Camera Roll is included in the iPad's Backup however there is no way to access the back up's content without Restoring the iPad. If you wipe the photos from the iPad's Photo Roll the new back up file created will also have them removed.
Photo Stream, also a part of iCloud, is also intended to make your latest photos accessible on your other iOS devices such as iPhones, Apple TVs and Mac computers. It will only hold 1000 of the latest photos and is supposed to delete them after 30 days. This can give you the opportunity to view photos for awhile, back the photos up in a more conventional manner on your computer and share them with others. It is not a back up and is more of a temparary place to view them. Photos should be transferred to a computer which also has a good back up routine to external sources.
Even though iCloud can hold your iPad Backup file, the back up file does not contain most media files. The iOS backup file is more for quickly getting your devics settings restored if you have an issue with it or want to set up a new device. Your media files must also live else where in a more permanent back up such as on a computer and an external USB drive. For most actions, iCloud pretty much mirrors your iOS devices, delete something from one device it is gone from them all including iCloud.
If you want to remove photos then store and view them from an online source use services such as DropBox or other online photo services such as Flickr. -
Hello, I am out of internal storage on my Iphone 4 ALREADY (Just purchased 3 months ago!). I need to clear up some space so I can do updates and take new photos. I was thinking about backing up my Photo Stream to the icloud and then deleting my Camera Roll.
1.) Is this a terrible idea??? I do NOT want to lose those photos! But I NEED more space on my phone!
2.) Will deleting Camera Roll free up space (a sufficient amount? My Camera Roll is at 4.5 GB)?
3.) Will deleting Camera Roll delete my photos from Photo Stream also? It doesn't seem to.
4.) Does Photo Stream ever automatically delete photos???
5.) Is there anyway I can save the pictures from my phone to my computer??? I can see the photos on my computer when viewing them through Photo Stream, but those are not permanent, correct?
This is one of the most ridiculous, confusing and unnessacary things I've ever known! Why oh why can't we just have a good ol' SD Card??? (My Droid never ever ran out of storage and I had it for 2 years...)
I tried backing up my photos in Itunes, but I don't have a new enough version. I tried downloading a new itunes and it still tells me I don't have the new version.

However, you can do the tedious task of moving your camera roll pictures to photo stream by ensuring photo stream is turned on for your device and take a screen shot of each picture in your camera roll to move it over.
To take a screen shot, just press the "Home Button" and the "Sleep/Wake Button" at the same time while viewing the image.
1.) It's not a terrible idea, it can be tedious though.

3.) Photo Stream photos, as you said, appear to stay upon deleting the photos. (Tested it personally)

Essentially, it won't erase your photos until you tell it to.

IPhone 5: Restoring Camera Roll from iCloud Backup.
When restoring all data from iCloud Backup, Camera Roll never finished downloading. It was stuck at 5 out of 715. How can I restore Camera Roll from iCloud Backup now that the initial "start up" Restore is complete?
Got my photos & videos back into camera roll! I woke this morning and all 701 were there. This is a few less than the most recent backup had, but good enough. So, there were a few things flakey about my experience restoring from iCloud. Therefore as many, including yourself have noted, iCloud IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A TRUSTED METHOD for backing up, storing or restoring photos & videos. If your photos & videos are important to you, backup to your computer at regular intervals.
What worked?
1: Following randers4's suggestion to review ezjules' post (see above for link).
2: When the most recent backup failed, I went to the next one available (2 days old)
3: When the Photo App displaying X of XXX images downloading in camera roll got hung up on the first few images, I powered down the phone and it resumed downloading more. However, it hung up 2 more times and then proceeded while I went to bed.
4: Phone was plugged into A/C outlet entire time, no incoming or outgoing phone calls or texts.
I am no longer going to back up photos or videos to the cloud. I will also cancel my additional storage capacity on iCloud. Why pay for secure storage that is so flakey?!? -

I don't want to have to delete each of the 900 photos one at a time.Syncing through iTunes won't help because that is not where synced photos are stored on iOS devices - they are in a folder that you name in iTunes (mine is iPad Photos).
The only way to clear the photos from the Camera Roll is to tap SELECT at the top of the screen, then tap all the photos so there is a blue checkmark on each of them and then tap the TRASHCAN at the bottom. You can select all the photos, but must do it individually. -
Last night I deleted some photos from my Camera Roll (on iPhone 3GS) using cable connection to my PC. I then went to Photo Stream (the photos were, correctly, still in there) and put some of them in Albums in the Photos app. Some, but not all, have now re-appeared in Camera Roll - and, very unhelpfully, not in the order they were taken. I don't want these photos in Camera Roll but can vaguely accept and understand if the app HAS to copy the Photo Stream photos to Camera Roll if you put them in Albums and they are not in Camera Roll already but then why are there 2 photos (in different Albums) that this is not happening for?

I connected the iPhone to my PC with the USB sync cable (I usually sync by Wifi) and opened the iPhone as a Windows window. Went to the relevant DCIM folder for the Camera Roll and Deleted them there. I checked on the iPhone before and after sycning that they had been deleted from Camera Roll - and they had. I only have one Camera Roll album (no chance of another album being synced).
They remained deleted from my Camera Roll until I put the copies of the photos held in the Photo Stream album (which I purposely did not delete them from) into an album. They then appeared in my Camera Roll again. Now, if I delete them from Camera Roll again (either direct from iPhone Photo app or via USB cable) they still reappear in my Camera Roll if I put them in an album from Photo Stream. I can see it happen before my eyes as each one appears after I have selected the photos from Photo Stream, used Share to put them in an album and then go to Camera Roll - they pop up one at a time.
It would make sense to some extent except that there are two photos (in two separate albums to the ones that are reappearing) that have definitely been deleted from the Camera Roll, have been put in their respective albums from Photo Stream but are not reappearing in Camera Roll. And, as far as I know, I did exactly the same things with them. I don't want to have the photos back in my Camera Roll but I cannot find any explanation as to why one set is appearing back in Camera Roll and these two are not. -
Why is it on the photo app is that when you add your photos to new albums and when you are deleting from camera roll it will delete photos from everywhere so therefore once your photos are in the albums you have chosen you cannot delete from camera roll
Your photos are actually all in the Camera Roll. The album you create only contain pointers to these pictures. Albums are like music playlists; when you delete a song from the playlist it doesn't delete the song from your music library. But when you delete a song from your music library it will also be deleted from any playlists that it may have been in as well.
