Deleted my Airport - HELP!

My MacBook Pro's Airport icon disappeared from the tray in the upper right hand corner this weekend.  I tried to go into network preferences and received no response when clicking "turn airport on" - nor did I ever turn it off.  I googled around and read that if I deteled the airport, restarted the computer, and then clicked the little "+" in the network preferences to add the airport back, I'd be good to go.
I did as instructed but now there is no option to add the airport back in the network preferences.  I realize in hindsight that it was dumb to delete it, but does anyone know what I do from here?  Some kind of system restore or something?
Thanks!!
