Deleted my /etc/groups and /etc/gshadow and now no mouse and keyboard.

Hey.
So a few days ago I updated my system and did something we all know to avoid. I accidently moved the empty .pacnew files over my groups and gshadow files so my entire group layout is out of the window. I am an idiot I know. My mom told me that when I was six. So I am now looking at fixing my system. My biggest problem is that now xorg runs but the keyboard and mouse don't respownd. This isn't a USB problem since I tried using non USB keyboard. In runlevel 3 keyboard works fine.
Xorg.log says something about input bring used by someone else  so my guess based on the above is that what I need to do is restore my old groups since its probably a group ownership problem. My question is if anyone knows which groups should I restore and how does one go about repairing the Damage? I would be thankfully to anyone who would take the time saving me from my own stupidity.

This might be the solution. Perhaps I should post my /etc/group file and you can fix yours? I don't know, did you ensure that all your groups have the correct GID?

  • Deletion of Release Group and Code in PO

    Dear Consultant,
    In Purchase order, we have created some release group and code, Unfortunately we deleted some groups Without deleting in Order wise.
    In table level the Release Group is there but in SPRO Release Strategy settings its not there..My consultant advised again you have to create same release group in Release strategy...
    If I create same Release Group which are lying in my T16FC Table..But system throwing this err "An entry already exists with the same key"
    Could you suggest me.
    Regards,
    PRIYA.

    Hi,
    Please go with below mention path: -
    SPRO >> Materials Management >> Purchase Order >> Release Procedure for Purchase Orders >> Define Release Procedure for Purchase Orders >> Release Groups.
    Here check release group is existing, if yes then remove them and click on save button.
    Then try to create new service group.
    Some times we delete release group and create new release group with same description without saving changes.Due to this this type of error is occur.

  • Just installed XP and Drivers, Now no mouse or keyboard

    Alright, so I just installed Windows XP through Boot Camp and had everything running on my new iMac. As labeled in the instructions, I popped in the driver install CD after I had XP installed (at this point, the bluetooth keyboard and mouse were both working). The wizard came up and the drivers installed themselves. Everything looked all fine until the setup "ended" with an error message that I didn't get to read, because less than a second later, the computer restarted itself.
    When XP came back up, I could tell that the video and sound drivers were installed because I heard the startup sound and the resolution was adjusted. BUT, the mouse and keyboard stopped working totally! I tried plugging in another wired USB mouse and keyboard, but the computer didn't detect them either.
    What should I try? Just reinstall the whole thing?
    Thanks in advance!

    No problem!
    - Right after I installed Windows XP (a clean install with no other data, of course), I popped in the driver install CD.
    - When the installer comes up, close it - we won't be needing that.
    - Open My Computer from the Start Menu and find the disc corresponding to the optical drive (Titled "Boot Camp"). Right click on it and select "Open", not "AutoRun". The disc's contents should appear.
    - From there, open the folder named "Boot Camp", and then open up "Drivers". In the "Drivers" folder, you'll find a whole bunch of folders that contain all of the drivers for all of the hardware on your Mac.
    - You're going to need to manually install all of the drivers EXCEPT the ones pertaining to 'USB' or 'Bluetooth'. Open each folder (better to do them in order), and find the drivers you need to install. It may look overwhelming trying to figure out which ones you need, but it's more simple than you might think. Essentially, each folder contains all of the drivers you need, but there are several versions of them for the different versions of Windows (XP, Vista 32, Vista 64, Win 64, Win 32, etc etc etc...) Figure out which version you have (most likely 32-Bit Windows XP) and install every driver that says anything among the lines of 'Win32' or 'XP' or 'XP32' (you get the idea) (again, avoiding the ones that have to do with Bluetooth or USB).
    TIP: The driver installer windows seem to pop up behind the window that you're currently using. Select them from the taskbar.
    TIP 2: Some drivers may summon a "Install New Hardware Wizard" window. Just don't touch those. Don't. Touch. They will go away on their own when the device is installed. I promise.
    ANOTHER TIP: When you get to the graphics cards installer folders (Either ATI or nVidia), you only need to install the ones for the graphics card that's in your computer!
    YET ANOTHER TIP: Don't forget the lingering "MotorolaSetup.exe" installer in the drivers folder!
    Hope this helps! If you need any clarification, please ask!
    PS: All of the above is why OS X is awesome. Just sayin'.

  • [SOLVED] Today's update of /etc/group, /etc/passwd and /etc/gshadow

    Hello,
    During the regular updates I received an update of /etc/groups. I wonder what I should do here, as there are some differences between the old file and the pacnew one. I suppose that when I use the command to add my user to a group, it gets written into this file. So, just recklessly moving the pacnew file in the place of the old one, will mess up all my groups, won't it?
    Then what should I do? All the entries in the pacnew file are also present in the old one, so I guess I could just delete the pacnew one and keep the old one. Am I right?
    EDIT: The same goes to /etc/passwd and /etc/gshadow.

    If you had the uuid user before like me the uuid line in your own files is different from the pacnew file. You have to delete the uuid line near the bottom in your old file. Then insert the new uuid entry including the new number in the place near the top suggested by the pacnew file. Keep the other lines untouched, then save your changes and delete the pacnew files.
    Edit: On a system that has actually been modified from a default install the new files will for sure be different to the old ones.
    Thanks, teateawhy!  I currently have this listed in /etc/passwd:
    uuidd:x:998:998::/:/sbin/nologin
    And this is in the .pacnew file:
    uuidd:x:68:68:uuidd:/:/sbin/nologin
    So, I can just copy the entry from the .pacnew file, overwriting the old entry, right?
    What I don't understand is how the two numbers 998 representing the UID and GID can suddenly change to 68.  Shouldn't they have to correspond with some other reference or list of users/groups...?
    I'm sure it's fine to just replace the entry as you suggested, but I wondered if there was a way to double-check which uid/gid should be used?  It's not that I don't trust you, but I don't fully understand how these group/passwd files work and I'm trying to get my head round it all.

  • [Solved] Questions about /etc/group and /etc/gshadow

    This morning, package filesystem was upgraded to 2015.02-1 and pacnew files were created for /etc/group and /etc/gshadow. I ran diff against my current files, and the differences seem very minor, to me. I need some guidance to understand whether I should implement the pacnew changes.
    The only significant difference I see in the group file is that in my original version, my username is added to the wheel group. This seems correct, to me.
    For gshadow, there is the same difference for wheel. However, there are several entries where my original entry contains an exclamation point, but the new version does not. For example:
    < proc:!::
    > proc:::
    If I run man /etc/gshadow, it does not give me what I understand as a man page, and gives me what appears to be a listing of the stuff in my /etc/gshadow file, instead. Which does not help me.
    So, like I say, I need some guidance on dealing with these pacnew files.
    Tim
    PS - I now see that "man gshadow" gives me an actual man page. Sorry. I am currently studying it.

    After the update to filesystem 2015.02-1 some voices in /etc/gshadow were changed (in the pacnew file) from
    systemd-journal-gateway:!::
    systemd-timesync:!::
    systemd-network:!::
    systemd-bus-proxy:!::
    systemd-resolve:!::
    to
    systemd-journal-gateway:::
    systemd-timesync:::
    systemd-network:::
    systemd-bus-proxy:::
    systemd-resolve:::
    What's the change? Before they had a locked password (the ! sign) and now they haven't?

  • /etc/group and /etc/passwd corrupted

    My /etc/group and /etc/passwd (and possibly others) are corrupted (my silly error handling pacnew files). I tried restoring the backups (group- and similar) and also ran grpconv, pwdconv,, pwck without fixing things.  I've edited the files, using those in another machine as a template but no luck.
    Various commands (e.g. ssh) fail with the message:
                                     No user exists for uid 1000
    Before I give up and reinstall, is there any way I can restore things to how they should be?

    Thanks for replies. I can't recreate my user because it's already there. I can log in as ac without difficulty and do most things - just a few (mportant) fail.
    I don't understand why it keeps saying the user ac is uid 1000. After reading the wikis I think my /etc/group and /etc/passwd are correct. /etc/passwd has:
                ac:x:1000:100::/home/ac:/bin/bash
    and /etc/group has:
               users:x:100:ac
               ac:x:100:ac
    I'm not sure the last line should be there, but removing it doesn't help. The entries on a second machine are similar.
    I'll sleep on it to see if I think of something else to try in the morning, otherwise I'll have to reinstall tomorrow.

    HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command. Thanks.

    If you select all the songs you want to change, Be it one song or an akbum, or an Artist, Or Genre, or playlist. Then Right mouse click  and Get Info. You then get a slightly different from normal Get Info box as this is the One for Multiple items.
    In there have a look at the tags and see if the one you want to changes is in there. There are a few tabs so if for example you wanted to change the Media Type from Home Movie to Movie go to the Options tab and select Movie and OK and it will change the whole selection.

  • AUDIT action (create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password from users account and group) users and admins in Solaris 10

    Hello.
    in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
    I set settings:
    in file syslog.conf:
    *.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice            @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
    in file   /etc/security/audit_control:
    dir:/var/audit
    flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
    minfree:20
    naflags:lo
    plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
    in file   /etc/security/audit_user:
    root:lo,ad:no
    Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
    Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
    Where is the mistake?

    You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
    And the fix is only available in S11.2.

  • [SOLVED] /etc/group or /etc/gshadow are inconsistent, grpck shows " ".

    After updating, pacman said
    ==> Warning: /etc/group or /etc/gshadow are inconsistent.
    but when running grpck there was no output.
    I would guess this means everything is OK. Is this the case?
    In case it matters, these are my /etc/group and /etc/gshadow.
