Deleted My Hard Drive - Help!

I dragged my Hard Drive from the Devices menu to the desktop, thinking it would make a shortcut or copy (I'm new to Macs), and it deleted it! How do I get it back? (I'm too afraid to reboot without an okay from a more experienced user...)

Hi Hallie, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Click on the desktop. Click on Finder menu. Click on Preferences. Click on Sidebar. Under Devices, click the checkbox next to Hard disks.

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you tried resetting the SMC? The SMC (System Management Controller) has control over the charging function, so resetting it may help.

  • Help I deleted my hard drive!!

Today, I was planning on restoring my mac to factory settings. I had accidently deleted my hard drive. When I tried to restart my computer, there was no data, all there was was a blinking folder with a question mark. I immediately tried internet recovery but it had given me an error. I'm not worried about lost data. I just want to know if there is anyway to re-download my hard drive without paying any money. HELP ASAP!!

If you do not have an external drive backup, your only hope to make the Mac boot again is if you had Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks installed.  If so, you can restart and hold the Command and Option and R keys, then from the Utilities drop down menu, choose Install Mac OS X.
Your personal content and data are lost if there is not an external drive backup.

  • Colour differences & LR not deleting from hard drive

    Hi,
I am running a Dell Dimension 1100, a NEC MultiSync 70 monitor, Xp SP 2 home, Olympus Master 2 and a full version of Lightroom 1.0,Photoshop CS2, and use a Olympus E-500 DSLR.
I have a slight issue with how Lightroom shows the colours of my pictures when i am comparing Olympus Master 2 v. Lightroom 1.0. Most pictures its hard to tell the difference without going back and forth constantly, but when i look at my pictures of flowers or landscapes, my pictures look so much more vibrant in Olympus Master compared to Lightroom. Is this a settings issue? or perhaps something else?
    Also.....
when deleting pictures from Lightroom, it asks me if i wish to delete from the hard drive or just remove from Lightroom, when i choose delete from hard drive, after it says its done, if i go look at the folder its still there :/.
any help would be apprieciated, I am a novice dslr user and still learning how to use the softwares out there

Are you shooting images in raw or jpeg mode?
I assume that Olympus Master 2 is the raw processing software bundled with your camera. If so, then you are asking why Olympus software renders pictures differently than Lr. This question has been asked (and answered) many times but it boils down to the fact that the Olympus default rendering could be far different than that chosen by Lr. Also, Olympus may embed proprietary information in the raw image useful to Master 2 but entirely unknown to Lr.
If you want Lr to operate more like Master 2, then create a Lr preset (with the appropriate adjustments -- likely a saturation boost), then apply this preset when importing.
Finally, the camera raw engine (ACR) used by Lr is noted for producing images more muted than that produced by software bundled with cameras. In my opinion this is a good thing since the default rendering that many cameras produce is not at all natural. But the powerful Lr develop module allows me to create any interpretation I choose. Including a head spinning contrast and saturation boost.

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space, I mean I have to delete mu hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using to with new information?

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

You don't need to reinstall Leopard.
You can reinstall Safari from here >  Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard

    Sure.
If your hard drive is still physically working, simply restore it from your computer's backup.

  • How to delete the hard drive

I've finally bought a new IMac and need to delete the hard drive on my Power Mac G5. How do I erase it so that I can be comfortable sending the computer to the recycler?
    Thanx.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

    Hi prkrgrp,
I'm sorry, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are having issues starting up from your original Install Disk and running Disk Utility to repair your hard drive, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

  • Secure deletion of hard drive on ibook?

I am thinking of selling my ibook and upgrading to a G5. I would like to know beforehand if there is a surefire method of deleting the hard drive of the ibook.

Launch Software Restore in your Utilities folder. It will take you through the process. If that won't allow you a complete Erase and Install, startup from the system disc and do one (an Erase and Install) and then reinstall all of the other software that came with your iBook.

  • Deleting partitions on Mac hard-drive, HELP!!

Thank you to everyone who has helped me out so far!! I've yet another question: I managed to switch back to Leopard from windows xp after a lot of messing around. I've unmounted the drive so at least I won't have that problem again.
My question is in relation deleting the partition and adding it back to my normal hard drive. I've tried doing this with Boot Camp assistant but when I'm deleting it, it just tells me that it's partitioning. i've left it for hours but it does nothing!!! How do I clear it!!! Help!! Space isn't an issue (I've ordered a time capsule!!) but I hate losing memory for no reason, help me!!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Great info - thanks! I have a further question . . .
I am simply trying to back up my whole hard drive onto a Macster external hard drive, but I kept getting an error for any file which contained characters such as / or ? in the file name. When I re-partitioned the hard drive as journaled, I encountered the same problem. Now that I have re-partitioned the drive as Mac but not journaled the problem seems to be gone. Have I done the right thing? Why would the journaled version have these problems?

  • How to delete iPod Hard Drive files? Help appreciated.

Since I have under a thousand songs, I enabled my Nano as a hard drive on my PC, and put the library on iPod. I went over to my new iMac Core Duo, and placed the songs into the empty iTunes there. I deleted the iTunes Music Folder on my iPods Hard Drive, and disenabled it for disk use. However, when I try to update my iPod on my iMac, it still shows that the iPod is filled up with the iTunes Music Folder on the hard drive because it won't let me update. I checked the folder once again and it shows nothing on the iPod Hard Drive.
My question is how do I delete that iTunes Music Folder, that I used to transfer songs to the iMac from my PC, off of my Nano's hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Martin,
If all the music is on your iMac, then why don't you restore your iPod...
    Restore the iPod
Then reload everything from iTunes and the capacity and use space should be accurate.

  • HELP! I think I deleted my hard drive

I was trying to install Boot Camp and I think I erased the partition on which my Mac stuff was on. Now it won't boot anymore on Leopard. It only boots on Windows. I am not sure were I made the mistake, but I am afraid I erased my whole disk, thinking I was installing Windows on another partition... Anyway, bottom line, before I re-install Leopard from scratch, can someone tell me if there is any chance to get back to my original Leopard and data? I am afraid not, but maybe I am wrong...

I'm sorry this happened to you. Heck of a way to end the year but there is a New Year coming.
I don't claim to be an expert on this, and someone correct me if I am wrong but here is what I would do.
    1. Back up your windows data to a separate firewall drive, not the hard drive on the computer, if you have any important windows info you want to save.
    2. Insert the leopard disk and boot the machine.
    3. Use erase and install option.
    4. After it installs, go to "Utilities" (in the finder under "Applications") and click on Disk Utility.
    5. the hard drive should be listed (by manufactures name i.e. Fujitsu....) and underneath that as a sub drive there should be Listed a drive as Macintosh HD.
    6. CLICK ON THE MANUFACTURES NAME (i.e Fijitsu....) to highlite it.
    7. DO NOT CLICK ON THE MACINTOSH DRIVE, THIS IS NOT THE ROOT DRIVE. YOU HAVE TO PARTITION THE ROOT DRIVE.
    7. right click with the mouse and it will give you the option to set up a partition.
    8. Pick your Partition size and let the computer do its thing.
I hope this will work for you.
    Happy New Year.

  • How to get songs back on iTunes once uploaded to iCloud & deleted off hard drive?

I have my 10,000 song library saved on an external hard drive.  I got the subscription to help limit used space on my laptop hard drive.  I started iTunes Match with my entire library (external drive) and uploaded my entire 10,000 songs.  Once completed I deleted everything from my iTunes program & unplugged my external.
Now my computer has absolutely no songs on it and I now expected to have access to my entire 10,000 song library from the cloud.  Once restarting my computer and iTunes I opened a library of all my songs visible in iCloud with download buttons but I was unable to actually click & download any of the songs that showed.
I turned off iTunes Match from the "Store" menu and turned it back on.  Now my library is completely empty but when I check the iTunes Match tab it tells me that I have 10,000 songs in iCloud waiting for me.
How do I get my songs???????

This sounds like an issue of the local iTunes client getting confused about the location and status of the library.
To use iTunes with all Song files on an external disk is straightforward if you have instructed it to find the Song files in that location.
A good route would be to connect the external hard drive such that iTunes client can see all your Song files as normal - check that you can both play your Songs and complete an Update iTunes Match.
Assuming all is well at this point you can instruct the iTunes client to delete all Songs keeping files and not requesting iCloud deletion.  At this stage all Songs should appear with a working download indicator against them.
If you now switch off iTunes Match.  Restart the iTunes client and create a new blank local library store on your computers internal disk, then switch on iTunes Match - all Songs will now appear.  You can complete a test download, it will simply store to your new library location.  From here you have the state you wished, all Songs accessible from the iCloud - with the ability to download should you choose.
