Deleted or look what is on backup

Hello.
I was wondering is there anyway to modify or look what you have backed up in iCloud. My storage says 5:5gb but I think that is because I deleted my account I have now activated it again and I was wondering to see what I gave backed u. When I click managed storage it comes up with change storage plan. Anyone with experience please help

Hi jopaglke,
Your first and most safely reliable boot disc is your Mac's original install DVD. It has Disk Utility on it, and Terminal, and the Hardware Test!
Personally I also keep a duplicate of my Mac's original install DVD, just in case.
- With Disk Utility, create an image of it while it's inserted. Choose "CD/DVD Master" kind of image, the one that ends with .cdr (not .dmg), and burn it on a blank DVD.
This works for those whose original DVD is small enough in size.
Another safe and handy solution:
- partition your external hard drive
(you DO have an external for backup purposes, right?),
and assign 10 GB to one of the partitions where you'll install (Custom-Install)a light version of your original OS.
You can perform the Software Update updates, and install your favorite utilities on it
(TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior etc)
so this bootable partition will be always ready for an option-boot (alt-boot) in case of a problem.
For those who own an original DVD that exceeds usual blank DVD sizes, the partition solution is the other simple and genuine one still possible.
Then there are bootable discs solutions by third-party softwares that you can buy (some of them are really good utilities).

  • Time Machine Deleted Files From A Non-Full Backup?

    OK... I just noticed something strange... I had some movie files that I deleted sometime yesterday (don't need them anymore)... just now, I wanted to see to retrieve one of them with TM and they're gone!
    My backup drive is nowhere near full and TM didn't warn me about deleting anything... looking at my backups, I noticed that I only have backups for yesterday at 8:03AM and from 8:09PM (and on)... I'm guessing that's the case because anything before 8:09PM is now more than 24 hrs old... hence, it's 'thinned out'... I also noticed that I only have my initial backup from Friday... not the several it made afterwards... and that backup from Friday is missing some data I had that was captured by the later backups...
    What's going on here? Seems to me that it should have all of my stuff, no?

    If you have all of the hourly data essentially versioned and incorporated into the daily, then Joe wants to restore from 3 days ago, if he has a file there that he has changed every single hour for that particular day, then he has 24 possible files to restore! It becomes a versioning nightmare. Though my example is extreme it's possible.
    Yeah, but that is what computers are good at, though. You can even put a simple UI on this, where the most recent version (the last edited version before its untimely deletion) is the only thing you see, unless you want to delve deeper into the depths of versions of the file.
    Also consider what is currently done for backups. People manually, or to a schedule, do point in time backups. Not as frequently as time machine, but it still happens. They have the exact same issues, with the exception that TM may have people becoming relaxed about their data, falsely believing it always going to be in a backup set somewhere.
    Yeah, point-in-time backups are always an issue, because they are just a snapshot, and not a journal of things done to change a file, so you can't recover something if it was never in a point-in-time backup.
    Sure it has it's flaws, but overall it's better there than not.
    I totally agree with that. Getting people to use some backup (even if flawed) is way better than the dismal state of backups for end users. I guess I'm just advocating for improving even further the state of backups, to a point where you can actually rely on them 99.999%.
    In case anyone is interested, I have been participating in an Open Source backup project "Box Backup" for the last few years. It supports the keeping of deleted files as long as the backup server has space left. It also solves another TM problem, in that it backs up only what changed in a large file (like a Parallels virtual Disk), so you don't need to do full backups of every file every time it changes. It has many other features as well, such as network backups, encrypted backups, and multiple platform support (Windows, Mac, Linux, and more).
    Go to http://www.boxbackup.org/ to check it out.
    This, however is not a solution (yet) for the average Joe to use. It requires a server on which to run the backup server (which could be a Mac), and some setup, and use of Terminal.app, etc. But it does solve many of the issues with TM.

  • Delete large file from Time Machine backup drive?

    I recently selected to exclude my Aperture.library file from Time Machine, but only after it had done about 8 backups already... the file doesn't exist in the latest folder on my TM hard drive but it is there in previous ones.
    how can i delete this file from my TM backups and regain 40gb? (it won't let you delete it in finder)

    Ewen,
    Let me make my self more clear.
    Because of the Apple KB article regarding Aperture and Time Macine, that's exactly why i chose to EXCLUDE my aperture.library file from time machine.
    Please don't read any negative tone in this, i'm just trying to explain myself.
    But hind sight is 20/20, so i was looking for a way to delete the old previous version of the aperture.library that was sitting on my backup time machine drive (useless taking up space)
    I apologize for not searching out that KB article, but i didn't think i'd have to do that. I assumed Apple would know how to have Aperture play nice with Time Machine....
    Any way all is good. we're all educated now

    I am freeing up some space and am using osx lion, but i have 12gb of back ups, how can i delete these and what are they?

    Gotcha.
    Back-ups are what they are: a safety copy. If you feel you don't need them, you can trash them. They could be of a previous System if you upgraded, or something else. You wont get the full picture from looking at system profiler.
    You may want to look into getting an external drive and offloading some stuff to it.

    is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

    Hi James,
    I was able to use VI server to invoke LV 6.1 VI's using LV 7.0 without issue.
    After discovering this and mentioning it in a post somewhere, Rolf Kalbermatter indicated that was expected. and I should not be suprised.
    So....
    Vi Server may help you.

    Do you know if the LabVIEW developers can/will create a way to overcome this problem rather than having to convert a VI through all the intermediate versions?
    To the best of knowledge NO.
    For each versino of LV there isw code included that runs behind the scenes when you open a VI from an earleir version which replaces old functions with the new versions. This is called Mutation code. To accomplish its task it has to know everything that changed between version X and Y. Since it is possible to baby step the versions up and the number of user that jump multiple major versions is small, I don't think any effort will go into that work.

    I can't sync my ipod because then it will delete everything

    The ipod is not a backup/storage device.  the sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchases
    It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

    I am told that the start-disc of my Mac Air is full and that I have to delete files. What do I do ?

    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
    When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
    Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • If different albums have the same song and I delete the duplicates what happen with the albums that should have that song, does it refrence back to the the song that was not deleted.

    If several albums have the same song and I delete the duplicates what happen then.  Does it remove the song from the albums and just keep 1 song in 1 of the albums?
    Thx got my answer not possible, it will delete th esong from the other albums

    Indeed, a song can only appear in one album.
    To check your library for duplicates use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. Keep holding down shift until you have clicked on the text Show Exact Duplicates or it may still use the loser definition.
    If you find that you have true duplicates you need to manually select all but one of each group to remove, or use my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. The script attempts to take account of different types of duplicates which need to be handled differently, merges playcounts and preserves playlist membership. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background.

  • Deleting Old Series of Time Machine Backups

    The external hard drive that I'm using for Time Machine backups has developed a problem according to an error message, and it's suggested that I should backup everything on it, reformat the drive and then move everything back. I've tried verifying the drive using the Disk Utility but I get a string of messages saying the modification date is incorrect and eventually that it can't repair it. The drive is still working for Time Machine but just to be safe I'd like to use another drive for these backups.
    If I'm going to transfer the backups files to my other hard drive, following the procedure laid down in the excellent note by Jim Pondini on Time Machine backups. The backup files are pretty large and they're split into two groups, one covering the period from 7 Nov 2009 to 30 Sept 2010 and the other from 1 Oct 2010 to the present day. The first of these has the name I gave to my original iMac while the other has the name of the iMac that replaced it in December last year. I've no need for backups going so far back and I'd love to just copy over the last set of backups but it seems that it is not possible to delete that earlier set of backup files, at least not without deleting them singly one day's backup at a time. Can someone confirm that this is the case? It does seem silly that there's no way of doing this in one action, particularly since the automatic deleting of earlier backups when the disk becomes full will not touch that earlier set at all.
    My other option is just to start a new set of backups on my new hard drive and I may well just do this. Am I correct in assuming that in this case I will still be able to access the backup files on my original hard drive, assuming I can still read it?

    Many thanks Linc, I'll do what you suggest.
    I did have some other files on the old drive, photos and iMovie projects, before I realised that I should have partitioned the drive and put these in a separate partition. I'm going to partition the new drive and put these other files into a separate partiton there - I can read all these OK on the old drive.
    Eric.

  • HT4859 how do I restore deleted text messages from an iCloud backup?

    I mistakenly deleted an important text conversation - swiping and deleting the wrong conversation.   My iphone is backed up to icloud, but not on my conputer.  Are there steps I can take to restore the deleted text messages from the icloud backup?  If so what are they and where will I find the restored messages after the process?   Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hi again - thank you very much for the feedback.  It is actually a conversation over 3 days that is quite important so if I can recover it, I would like to.
    As for the actual process, the most recent back up was prior to my deletion.   Three last questions (I hope...):
    1) How will I know what I need to redownload from itunes?
    2) Is this link the best in terms of the literal steps to take to do the restore:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    3) Is there anything I should do to the phone before I begin the restore process?

  • I deleted mailbox from dock without TM backup

    I accidently deleted the mailbox application without the backup from time machine. However, my mail accounts are still there. The mailbox application picture has turned into 2 pieces of paper with a pencil, ruler, and paint brush. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I also cant find my install disc on my mac mini. Please Help!
    Thanks in advance for anyones help.

    Dude, seriously?  There's a search box: type 10.6.7 combo update in it and hit the return key.  You don't even need to do that, probably, since it was at the bottom of the Featured Downloads sidebar when I looked at the page, but...
    Look, this is a very tech-savvy way of solving this issue, and I'm getting concerned you might not be up to it. No offense intended, I just don't want you to mess up your system further by getting in over your head with tricky solutions.  The easy and unbreakable way of solving this problem is to get an install DVD and reinstall the system software (making sure you preserve user accounts).  do that, run software update a couple of times, and you should be good as gold. A 10.6 DVD costs $30, new: that (plus driving time to your local BestBuy or whatever) is worth the cost if it saves you major headaches from a botched repair effort.

  • HT202667 I cannot change prime email address into what WAS my backup email address. Any solutions?

    Need to change prime email address into what WAS my backup email address.
    Can this be done?
    Mac 10.6 Intel Core 2 Duo

    Hi michaelfromripley,
    Thanks for the question.  If you first change your rescue email address to a different email address, then you should be able to change your primary email address for your Apple ID.  The following resources will explain more:
    Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201356
    Add, change, or delete the several types of email addresses you can use with your Apple ID account.
    Primary email address
    Every Apple ID account has one primary email address, and that address is your Apple ID. When you create an Apple ID, you enter the primary address to use as your Apple ID.
    Your primary address is also the contact email address for your account. Check it regularly, because it receives email that you need to manage your account. For example, before you can use a new or changed Apple ID, you need to verify it as directed in a verification email that Apple sends to that address. Didn't receive the email?Rescue email address
    A rescue address helps secure your Apple ID account against unauthorized access by someone who gains control of your primary address. If you have a rescue address, it receives all security-related Apple ID email instead of your primary address, including the email needed to reset your password or security questions.
    Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    Select “Password and Security” on the left side of the page. You may be asked to answer one or more security questions before continuing. Forgot the answers?
    If you see a list of three security questions, your account has the option to use a rescue address.
    Accounts that have fewer than three questions don't have and don't need a rescue address.
    Accounts that use two-step verification don't have and don't need a rescue address or security questions.
    Add a rescue address:
    Select Add Email Address, then enter your rescue address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
    Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address. If you don't verify the address, security-related email continues to go to your primary address.
    Edit a rescue address:
    Select Edit next to the address, then enter the new address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
    Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address. If you don't verify the address, security-related email continues to go to your primary address.
    Delete a rescue address: Select Delete next to the address.
    Alternate email address
    You can add one or more alternate email addresses for use with Apple services such as Game Center, FaceTime, Find My Friends, iMessage, and OS X notifications.
    Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    Add an alternate address:
    Select Add Email Address, then enter your alternate address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
    Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
    Edit an alternate address:
    Select Edit next to the address, then enter the new address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
    Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
    Delete an alternate address: Select Delete next to the address.
    Notification email address
    A notification address is automatically added to your account in certain circumstances:
    If you have a rescue address and turn on two-step verification, that address automatically becomes your notification address. With two-step verification, you don't need a rescue address.
    If you provide an email address with your shipping information when you purchase from the Apple Online Store, that address automatically becomes your notification address.
    Your primary address receives a copy of all Apple ID email that Apple sends to your notification address.
    Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    Edit a notification address:
    Select Edit next to the address, then enter the new address. Apple will send a verification email to that address. Didn't receive the email?
    Follow the instructions in the email to verify the address.
    Delete a notification address: Select Delete next to the address.

    Change your Apple ID - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667
    Learn how to change the email address that you use as your Apple ID.
    In most cases, your Apple ID is also the primary email address of your Apple ID account. You can change your Apple ID to any other email address you control, as long as it's not already in use as an Apple ID. If your email address ends with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com, it's already an Apple ID.
    Use these steps to reset your Apple ID:
    Sign out of iCloud, the iTunes Store, App Store, FaceTime, Find My Friends, Find My iPhone, and iMessage on each device that uses your current Apple ID for these services.
    Go to My Apple ID.
    Select Manage your Apple ID and sign in. Forgot your password?
    Select Edit next to Apple ID and Primary Email Address.
    Enter the email address that you want to use as your Apple ID, then select Save Changes. Apple will send a verification email to that address.
    Open the email from Apple, then click Verify Now. Didn't receive the email?
    When the My Apple ID page opens, sign in with your new Apple ID email address and password. When you see a message that verification is complete, you can start using your updated Apple ID.
    Update the features and services that you use with Apple ID, so that each one is using your updated Apple ID.
    If you need to change the Apple ID that's signed in to your iOS device, use these steps to sign out, then back in with a different Apple ID.

  • Delete obsolete causing issue with archivelog backups......or is it?

    Hi, hoping someone will have the answer for me.
    Oracle 10g R2 on Windows 2003 R2 Sever.
    The start of my RMAN script runs, i do crosschecks and delete obsolete backups from type disk. My redundancy is set to 1. I then run compressed backups of the datafiles and archivelogs with 2 channels. This leaves me with two days of full backups on disk (i have months worth on netbackup) the only problem is that one of the archivelog channel backups from the previous day is missing when i know it was there before the delete obsolete was run.
    here is the script:
    run{
    CROSSCHECK BACKUP;
    CROSSCHECK archivelog all;
    CROSSCHECK COPY;
    CROSSCHECK backup of database;
    CROSSCHECK backup of controlfile;
    delete noprompt obsolete device type disk;
    run {
    allocate channel ch1 type disk format 'Z:\backup\rman\orcl\%d_%T_%U';
    allocate channel ch2 type disk format 'Z:\backup\rman\orcl\%d_%T_%U';
    backup as COMPRESSED BACKUPSET
         format='Z:\backup\rman\orcl\full_%d_%T_%U'
         tag='full_DBbackup_ris'
         database;
    backup as COMPRESSED BACKUPSET
         format='Z:\backup\rman\orcl\arch_%d_%T_%U'
         tag='full_ARCHbackup_ris'
    archivelog all not backed up delete all input;
    sql "alter database backup controlfile to trace as ''Z:\backup\rman\orcl\controlfile_backup_trace.txt''";
    release channel ch1;
    release channel ch2;
    This is my (simplified) list of backups on disk:
    Full_day1_chan1
    Full_day1_chan2
    Arc_day1_chan1
    Arc_day1_chan2
    Full_day2_chan1
    Full_day2_chan2
    Arc_day2_chan1
    It looks like channel2, days2, archivelog backup is missing. Is this correct? If not does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
    thanks in advance.
    Steven.

    Hi Steven,
    The data backed up by rman is written to backup pieces.
    Are you missing pieces containing archive logs?
    Could it be there was only 1 arc file available so the second channel could not create any backup piece?
    Did you could check the output of the backup in v$rman_output?
    Regards,
    Tycho
