Deleted Remote Disk icon from Finder...!

accidentally... with jittery hands... deleted my Remote Disk icon from the Finder window "Devices". How can I get it back? Where is "remote disk" located on the HD and can I bring it back into the Finder list?
Help!!
cheers,
Aaron

Hi Svans,
On my machine when I go into Finder > Preferences > Sidebar
I have the option to choose to make my Remote Disc available by checking the appropriate box.

  • Help Accidently deleted my home icon from Finder

I only bought my iMac yesterday and have broken it already. In Finder, under 'Places', there used to be 4 icons: Toni (my name), desktop, applications and documents. I have lost the Toni icon! In attempting to move it to the Dock it disappeared in a puff of smoke. Gah. I think the contents are still there: when I hit 'Home' on the 'Go' menu in the top left corner, the contents appear in Finder. Is there any way I can restore the icon? I've tried time machine but it doesn't seem to work. Many thanks

Go to Finder Preferences, Sidebar Tab, and recheck the Home folder. Or, you can drag your home folder to the sidebar. The home folder is in /Users/ and has the same name as your short user name.
The sidebar holds aliases to the actual files/folders, not the folders themselves. It's like a Windows shortcut, but actually still works when you move the original file.
You can drag other files/folders/devices to the sidebar for quick access. When you drag the original, the alias is automatically created. If you don't like them, you can drag them off and they will go poof.
The same is true for the Dock. Nothing in the Dock is real and if you drag it off the dock, it will go poof, but the original is still intact.

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

On my iPad Air, I have deleted the FaceTime icon from many of my listed Contacts. Is there a way to restore the icon and FaceTime facility to selected contacts?

Some of my contacts in Contacts have the Facetime icon in their listing, some don't. I guess I've deleted it from those where it's missing, though not sure how! How can I get it back when it's missing? in Edit, I can add new email addresses, phone numbers etc, but I can't figure out how to add FaceTime to a listing.

That situation went from inconvenient to complicated quickly.  Wait for any pending orders to drop off, wait for things to clear up, wait till your upgrade comes up and then upgrade when your contract is fulfilled.  I would have suggested a replacement phone, I know, with only a month left why couldn't you just upgrade early, but these situations where people try to upgrade early always end horribly and once a phone order starts, it almost cannot finish until something winds up shipped received and returned.  Sorry this happened the way it did.  Definitely not efficient.

  • Can not delete Fox news icon from Safari Favorites Bar, keeps coming back

I can not delete "Fox news" icon from Safari Favorites Bar. Dogpile Search engine also.  Both keep coming back with icons upon new opening of Safari.
I have removed these icons from the Book Mark files and Favorites Bar menu and any reference in the LIbrary and replaced them with less spammy evercookie news and search engines 3 times to no avail.  I just upgraded Safari (April 2014) and it made no difference. These sites represent the paradigm I
no longer am putting energy into nor want which is why I have rid these increasing more corrupted and cookie agressive sites.  But now.....
they won't let me go!!  Any one no how?

Thank you for trying but no not the problem.  Had the same problem with Iphone 4S.  Would not connect to my mail server and tried to send me to fraudulent website in the UK/England.
I did a restore to factory restore to the phone with upgrade to newest operating system, my was up to date until OS 7 as I heard there were problems.  Now it has OS 7.
Neither I nor verizon could get the phone up and connected for service again.  Taking phone to

  • Cannot remove Disk Icons from Disk Images or External Drives from Desktop

After years with PPCs, I just upgraded to an Intel Mac. I am now running into a funny problem. The majority of the time (although occasionally it works as it should), I am unable to eject disks. These include disk images from my internal hard drive, external hard drives, and disk images from external hard drives.
I do not get the “Cannot eject this disk because it is in use” error that happens when something is trying to access a file on the disk; instead, nothing happens. I’ve tried ejecting by dragging the icon to the dock, hitting the eject icon in finder, right-clicking and ejecting from there, and even using a terminal-based script that I found on the WEB. None of these do anything- no errors, but the icon hangs about as if nothing happened.
Occasionally I cannot log off at all (I just get the SBBOD); here I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I can log off properly. Either way, all seems to be fine when I log back in.
    I’ve run Applejack multiple times.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you.

  • Can't eject disk image from Finder in Mountain Lion

I just got a new MacBook pro. I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Any time I try to unmount an external hard drive or eject a disk image from the Finder, nothing happens (either clicking the contextual eject icon or right-clicking). The items in question are not in use when I try to eject them. I'm only able to do so with Disk Utility. Any ideas? I've repaired disk permissions but the problem persists.

I am having similar issues with my user account. It also is the same in Yosemite.
Disc images, external hard drives etc dragged to trash (get eject icon) are simply ignored.
Pressing Eject button in side bar of Finder are ignored.
It seems to be a permission/account issue as:
    - using computer under a different account doesnt have this problem
    - transferring account over to another mac continues the problem on the new computer.
Log file seems not to have any errors.

  • Deleted Time Machine Backups from Finder

I back up my MacBook with Time Machine. My girlfriend has an older MacBook Pro, with Tiger. I was surprised to see that Tiger did not come with any sort of backup utility, and I eventually found Super Duper. I made a backup with Super Duper to my external hard drive with my Time Machine backups. Her computer died, and she took it to Apple. They could not restore her data, which wasn't a big problem because I had made a very recent back up.
I then proceeded to restore the backup. I thought SD kept track of what files belonged to what computer, like TM does. It started copying my TM backups to her hard drive. This wouldn't be a problem, except she only has a 160 GB hard drive, and her backup is about 100 GB and my TM backup was another 100 GB. Thus the file restore would fail. I decided to delete the TM folder, because I was not worried about my computer, and I could create another backup after partition to avoid this disaster again.
I deleted the TM backups... and my drive still had 200 GB of used space. Then I used Google to find out how I royally messed this up. That being said and done, I have had Disk Utility repairing my external hard drive since Thursday at 5p, and it's now 8:40a on Saturday. Furthermore, while I deleted the files, SD still enumerates them and somehow copies them which fills the hard drive before the restore is complete. When I plugged my external hard drive into my MacBook, it automatically started a new TM back up. However, it renamed the folder "Andrew Fawcett's something (2)", as if it were a duplicate folder. So OS 10.5.8 knows somehow that there are files, and so does SD, but I cannot see them.
Apple's support told me to delete the TM backups in Finder... and to fix the invibile files to reformat the drive. How do I fix my TM backups so I can get SD to work? I have files I need to restore! From what I've read, there are a few of you familiar with SD.

SuperDuper! copies entire volumes. That's why it tried to transfer those Time Machine files. If you register SuperDuper! (USD28), you can tell it to exclude certain files, such as those TM files.
If you want to use an external drive for both TM and other storage, you might be happier if you partitioned that drive, using one partition for TM and the other for any other files.
Until you have this resolved, I'd turn off TM on both computers.

  • Can't remove Acrobat Reader 8 icon from Finder view

Several weeks ago I downloaded and installed Acrobat Reader 8, deleting version 7.
Since then, if I double-click on the Finder icon in the Dock I see an Acrobat icon there along with icons for my other folders. If I click on it, the program opens.
The icon doesn't appear on my Desktop.
How can I get rid of it?

Ah, I seem to have solved the problem: when I double-click on the TRASH icon in the Dock and drag the Adobe icon from the left column of folder icons into the Trash area I got a "poof" animation and the Adobe is gone at last!
