Deleted some items in open ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

Hi, I was trying to edit this file as my cursor was acting slow in terminal and vim apps and I saw that you could edit this file to fix that. I hit the minus sign on a few items and I thought it would collapse the group instead it looks like it deleted items. What can I do to restore this? Will this effect me the next time I logout / in? I have used linux for several years but am a mac newbie running OS X mountain lion on a mac book pro.

BTW, if you want to make changes to plist files, instead of editing the plist, better to use defaults.  (see: man defaults)
i.e., to speed up the cursor:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain KeyRepeat -int 0
and for the repeat rate:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain InitialKeyRepeat -int 4

  • SSD/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist Resets After Editing

    Hello,
After editing the SSD/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist to fix an issue with my ColorSync profiles (Unable to change profile on external monitor) I lose the settings when I reboot. Here's a more detailed description.
I have an error in Settings - Displays: Can't Callibrate the Display: The factory profile for the display could not be found.
I've been looking for the solution for quite some time.
I installed Mountain Lion to a partition I created inside my SSD and copied all the files over from a fresh install to an external hard drive.
After digging around I found that there's a problem inside my .GlobalPreferences.plist file (Not User, but SSD/Library)
I figured out how to edit the file by either 1) Enabling the root account or 2) Changing the permissions on the folder /Library/Preferences
While looking at the .GlobalPreferences file from the fresh install I can copy the mntr settings to the correct one (Detecting my Acer H233H display) and it works. Until I reboot that is. Then the edits are lost.
I'm not sure why the file isn't saving the state after I edit. I am changing the permissions back to their defaults before I reboot. (Could that be it?)
I have a lot of custom software, plugins etc for work that are very difficult the reinstall. I am trying to avoid that if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

    EDIT:
Just tried to edit the file & leave the permissions on SSD/Library/Preferences to User Read, Write, Execute while I rebooted and it still resets to the wrong settings...
    That is:
    1. I edit the file and it works correctly
    2. After I reboot the file resets to the default and I lose the edits and my monitor looks horrible.

  • Close/delete some items in reservation

    Dear All,
I need to know how to set final issue or deletion flag for SOME items in many reservations (collectively) , while i tried MBVR
it deleted the item from system and this is not the required.
    Appreciate your quick response,

There is no standard way of setting final indicator in mass to reservation items. Only through GR or manually in MB22 for each reservation item.
Help documentation on Reservation management program RM07RVER
Functions of the Reservations Management Program - SAP Retail - SAP Library
You can only delete them in mass if they have meet the criteria
    Marking Items for Deletion
The reservations management program sets the deletion indicator for reservation items:
that are completed (final issue indicator has been set)
whose requirement date is earlier than the date calculated by the system
Consequently, old or unnecessary reservations that no longer represent an "actual" request are deleted (for example, because the material was withdrawn without the reservation being referenced during the goods issue posting).

  • /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist being ignored by system

Here's one that I've not seen anyone else report.
I've been creating a system image of OS 10.4.5 and every time I lay the image down and log in using any user account, the items entered into the global loginwindow.plist file are being ignored. To put it in basic terms, it behaves as if the system doesn't even know that it is there. None of my global login items are being launched.
I have verified that the plist file is in the correct format, I've checked permissions, and I've even compared it to the same file in my previous system image. The previous system image never gave me this problem. I created both images from scratch using the exact same procedure, which I have documented step by step. There are only two exceptions. The second image (the one that doesn't work) was started by using the 10.4.3 install DVD, whereas the first image I used the 10.4 install DVD. Other than that, the first image was built after having been upgraded to 10.4.3 using Software Update, the second image 10.4.5 using the same method.
Has anyone seen this before? What else can I try, here? I feel that I have exhausted all options aside from starting over from scratch and using the 10.4 install DVD instead, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oops, it was permissions after all. I was accidently setting the file to 600 after laying down the image. How I could have missed that?? Oh well.

Note - this is done in the. Music app. Not iTunes.

  • Accidentally deleted some items from inboax. How to restore

I opened the inbox for reading my email. I wanted to select one message for deleting. Instead all messages on the page ( 50) messages got selected and deleted. I wish to recover the messages. How do I do it?

my mouse has no right click button
Right-Click is the same as Control-Click (holding the Control key, then clicking).
Look in your Home folder for "Downloads".
Drag it to the Dock.   Then Right-Click (or Control-Click) on the Downloads folder now in the Dock, and configure how you want the information in Downloads to be displayed.
If you want it in your Finder side-bar, Drag it to the Finder Side-bar from your Home folder.

    Hi,
I've removed two apps from my login items lists. But they still open whenever I log in. What do I need to do to really kill them dead?

Did you perhaps just uncheck them?
You need to highlight one and hit the little minus icon .

In the Finder, drag unwanted and unnecessary files to the Trash, and then from the menu bar, choose Finder > Empty Trash. This action will permanently delete everything in the Trash from your hard drive.

When I look them up in 'Purchased', they show as already downloaded.

you have to buy it again, like a lost CD, when you didn't have a backup
or you use iTunes Match then you can download them again and again

  • Lockfiles persist in ~/Library/Preferences

I just noticed a log entry related to ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
Checking the ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist directory I found over 170 *lockfiles many from Aug 15 2011.
    None from anytime recent.
Should something be cleaning them up?
I deleted all of them, was that a mistake?

You didn't hurt anything by deleting them. I think those are leftovers from a prior OS that you my  have upgraded from. If I recall, they're 0 bytes in length. Link to review.

  • Finder - Cannot double click items to open

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, intermittently I have been unable to double click some items to open them in their default programs. I can go into the program and open them via File - Open.
If I double click an item with it's default program open, nothing happens. If I double click an item and the program is not open, the program bounces in the dock and does not open.
Same for .dmg files. If I download them, I can only open them using Disk Utility.
These problems are not present when I boot up. They only happen at some point later. A restart fixes the problem.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

I am having the same issue with my machine, and 3 other iMac machines. All updated to 10.6.1. At first I thought it was just attachments in e-mails not opening correctly... Then I discovered that double-clicking, or right (option) clicking and choosing open, or open with, did not do anything. If the default program for that file is open, it will take you to the program but will not open anything. I have found this to be a problem with .pdf, .doc, .docx, .jpg files. I tried deleting the finder preference file, which has done nothing. No solutions as of yet.
