Deleted Startup disk remains default startup disk?

This one is new to me....
I have one disk with two startup partitions and a third as a "backup". I was working on the two startups partition disk and both worked fine. But recently one of the System Preference panels for Spotlight was corrupted so I did an "archive and install" on that partition. But when I did the restart after the archive and install I was unable to boot into the newly installed Leopard disk. Furthermore the machine default booted into the OTHER partition. So I tried to log into that one and the password input says I was putting in the wrong password (I was not). So I tried holding down the Option Key at startup and selected the startup disk I wanted  - again, it booted to the other and the password was somehow fubarred. So I went ahead and "dismantled" that pesky defaulting startup disk, trashing both the system and the library folders - but on reboot it STILL boots to that disk even though now it doesn't exist AT ALL. Even the name remains? ***?
I went ahead and revealled all the invisible files - trashed those. I did Option+S at start up and fsck. I used TechTool Pro to repair, I used Disk Utility and permissions... UGH.
Why is this deleted startup STILL showing up and booting off the other present startup system on the other partition (Note: If I hold down Option key at start up I can still boot into the third OS I keep). What is interesting is that everytime I reboot and check the "pesky" startup disk from the other one I see a new System folder added to that (remember, I deleted it). After the invisible files were deleted it no longer did this. But, again, still boots into a non-existent login screen.
I know the "simple" answer is to reinstall and reformat this disk - but on the other "pesky" partition I have 750GB of data I'd rather not migrate (it's in the default user's folder that I didn't delete). And I'd like to learn what the heck is going on.
Thanks for anyone's illuminating insights on the phantom startup disk.

Hi, I vaguely rember you from before, but nothing here is the same as before, as it is with OSX in general!
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMD+Option+o+f ?

reset-nvram (press Enter)
set-defaults (press Enter)
reset-all (press Enter)
What shows as boot choices if you hold the Option/alt key down at bootup?

  • Delete ASM disk - database doesn't  start

    Hi
For testing purpose, I have installed grid infrastructure for standalone server and database 11g on linux. Instead psyhical disks, I have several partitions for data as ASM in normal redundancy. I try simulate disk fail (ASM should load balance and still work). When in Enterprise Manager Database Control I mark disk as offline, it works. But when I delete partition by fdisk, database doesn't start (I change disk repair time to 0.0). I try:
    oracleasm deletedisk ASMDISK02,
    but it doesn't help.
I can't even startup database in nomount, I get error:

Why I get errors, and how I could solve this problem?
    Thanks awfully for help.
    Regards

    Hi,
when your ASM instance/DB is down, when you delete a disk, then the diskgroup has to be mounted with the "force" option.
Now to be able to start ASM, he needs an spfile (or a local init.ora). Unfortunately your spfile is in the diskgroup he cannot mount at the moment (because disks are missing).
Start ASM with a local init.ora:
    sqlplus / as sysasm
    startup pfile=path_to_your_asm_init.ora
Then mount the diskgroup with force:
    alter diskgroup <dg> mount force
After this drop the disk/repair the error.
Then you can restart the stack.

  • What will happen to the data if we delete a disk in ASM

    Friends -
Question : Under RAC Environment we are using ASM for Storage. I want to know what will happen to the data if we delete a disk?
    Please advise on this.
    Regards
    VSH

It depends on level of redundancy and disk space left. As long as there's enough space on remaining disks, data would be rebalanced between the disks.
You can check the ASM operations if you query v$asm_operation:
    select * from v$asm_operation;

  • Files "Deleted from Disk" not deleted

I was under the impression that this problem related to the appearance of "Ghost" drives (duplicate drives appearing in the LR after I edited a file. The folder duplications are no longer a problem in LR 2.1
HOWEVER, when I use the option "delete from disk" (vs. remove)these files are not getting deleted from my hard drive. They reappear on the next folder synchronization I run.
I am either asking for input on how to make deletions stick and/or requesting that Adobe look into this before releasing the release version of 2.1
    Thanks - Kevin
    System info:
    LR 2.1
    Windows Vista Home Premium
Quad Core PC with 4GB RAM
1 TB "RAID 5" system drives (4 of them make up the 1 TB)

Thanks for the suggestions but they didn't work:
1- Cleared preferences by hitting the various reset to factory buttons. Then closed and restarted LR. Is there another way to do this?
2- The foloder quantity goes down when I delete and goes back up when I synchronize
3- File manager shows the same number of files as LR BEFORE I delete and then shows more AFTER I delete. Then, after synchronizing they are back to equal.
Finally, I tried deleting a file in windows explorer to see its effect. It immediately showed as missing in LR. I synchronized and that file was deleted.
    Any other ideas?

  • Delete from disk+move to ext. disk error!??

    This is so strange!
When i hit backspace and select "delete from disk", it "removes" it from lightroom, but it is still in the finder, and when sync folder, it reappears? So annoying, having 2000 useless files wanting deleted, mixed with 10 that cannot be lost.
Some folders, when trying to move them inside LR, to an ext. disk, it creates the folder on ext. disk, sometimes with none, one or two files - never more. And then this appirs "Could not move files, and unknown error occured" inside LR.
    And I cannot rename folders.
    Please help.

Yes, if there are a lot of images, that is obviously quicker.

  • Removed from Lightroom; Now, want to delete from Disk - how to identify?

    Here's what I did:
    - I removed a bunch of images from Lightroom, without Deleting from Disk.
    - Now, I want to remove those images from the Disk, the ones I deleted from the catalog
Is there any good, quick way to delete the "un-cataloged" images out of the hard drive folder, leaving the folder containing only the images still in LR? Perhaps, to move the images still in LR to another folder, then clean out the folder of what's left?
Also, am I missing something obvious about this process?  I *usually* just flag images for deletion, but this time, without thinking, I actually deletedthem...but from the catalog only.  Whoops.
    LR 3.4
    Windows 7
    Thanks folks -

  • LR3 not prompting to "Delete from Disk"

    Hello,
I've marked some photos as rejected which I would like to not only remove from the catalog, but also delete them from disk. I've never had a problem in the past, but now when I go to Photo > Delete Rejected Photos... LR simply shows all of the photos marked as Rejected, but does nothing further. Any ideas as to why it no longer prompts me regarding whether to delete from disk or simply remove from the catalog?
    LR 3.2
    Mac OS X 10.6.4
    Thanks,
    Robert

    No, none are virtual copies.
But... you got me thinking. I went through the photos marked for deletion, checking to make sure that none were virtual copies. In the process I found that 2 photos are part of various collections. I Unmarked those two photos and now the "Delete from Disk" prompt works!
    Thanks for your help!

  • How do I delete a disk

A while ago I created 2 disks - one for programs and files and one for movies.
Now. Something crashed and I just went ahead and reinstalled the system.
Now I still have the two disks but I can't put anything in the MOVIES disk since it hasn't been formatted.
Here's a photo of my desktop so you can see what I mean.

I just wanna delete that disk called MOVIES.

    Lucas,
You can't simply "delete" it, without re-formatting your entire hard drive (both volumes). THere are third-party utilities that will remove it, but let's not go there right yet...
If all you want to do is access that partition, you can do that. The problem is probably with permissions. If you post a little more information about why you cannot save movies there, I'm sure we can help you out.

I accidentally deleted the "Recently Added" default playlist from iTunes. Any way to recover and reinstall it?

Call it "Recently Added" and make the rule that date added is in the last 2 weeks (or your preference for "recent").

  • Why do deleted Outlook emails remain in finder?

Why do delete outlook emails remain in finder after deleting the emails in outlook?

Apparently Outlook never really deletes mail.  You can rebuild the database and then delete the backup of the original database that gets created when you do the rebuild.  But I don't think there any other way.
Use Outlook's help menu, type Rebuild, and select "Rebuild the office database" for instructions.
Note, there is a way to permanently delete mail if it is still in the Deleted Items mail box.  That is to press the shift key while selecting the items to be permanently deleted.  You will get a dialog asking if it is ok to do that.

  • Accidentally deleted startup disk

I dont really remember what exactly I was doing to have deleted my start up disk, but recently my keyboard has been on the fritz and wont let me type anything, or, it lets me type, but its in symbols and its locked with no way out of it. Therefore I cannot log into my interenet connection. How do I get my startup disk back? I just got this so there are no back up points on it. I feel like it'll be nearly impossible to fix this. I can get to disk utility, after that I am lost. Help please!

You have a hardware problem. Take it to an Apple store and have them fix it.

  • Unable to delete a disk image and reclaim hard drive space.

I created a  disk image on which to store some stuff, and I now want to get rid of the disk image (which is 115 gigs of storage) and reclaim the hard drive space. I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3. I have been unable to delete it through disk utility. I can only unmount it or mount it, but the storage space remains with it. I can't get rid of it through the downloads folder either, but if I find it in "volumes" via spotlight, and try to put it in the trash, it tells me "ENN.dmg cannot be thrown away because it can't be deleted." I tried using root user to delete the item and it told me I could not because it belongs to another person. My permissions are "read and write." I've searched all sorts of forums. Can anyone help? Thanks!

What error are you getting? Are you dragging and dropping on the trash can or right clicking and selecting "Move to Trash"?
Right click on the image file and select get info. What are the permissions set to.
Can you move or copy it to another folder or a external drive and if you can copy it can you delete the copy?

  • CANT DELETE STARTUP ITEMS FORM PANE!!!

    Hi,
I've posted, asked a lot and tried lot of things, but the "Startup Items" window under the accounts pane in Sys Prefs. is now 75 and counting!!! and I'm feeling there's nothing I can do about it!!!
I can't delete the startup items wich all of them read "Extensis Suitcase X1" and "Unknown". Obiously I installed Suitcase and told the app to load at startup, but i feels like auto-duplicates each time I start up the Mac!
I first autenthicate, then select wether one by one or many of them at a time. Click on the "-" button, and nothing! They still remain there like sticked whit cement glue!
Someone could tell me what's next???
    Thanks!!

    Hi, Jota and Richard —
Jota, I don't use Suitcase — and thus can't test solutions — so I'll limit my suggestions.
        (1) You may find a specific answer by searching the Extensis KnowledgeBase from this Support web-page. Here are results from a search using terms [login items] — including how to uninstall, problems with multiple accounts, their "Top 5 Troubleshooting Steps" for Mac, etc. I've read through enough of the articles to realize that installing and troubleshooting their software can get pretty complex — so I think following their instructions would be wise...
        (2) Have you checked in your HD's /Library/StartupItems/ folder?
        (3) I'm not clear on whether you're trying to troubleshoot a problem that may relate to Startup/Login Items. If so, please recall that booting into Safe Mode may help to troubleshoot font, font-cache, and startup-items problems.
    Good luck!
