Deleted Utilities folder

I have accidentally deleted my utilities folder (Really I dont even understand how this happened). How do I recover it? If recovery isn't an option can I copy a friends or is a complete reformat the only answer? Thank you so much!
Brittany

Restoring Lost OS X Files
If you erase or otherwise "lose" an OS X system application or utility (such as Mail or Disk Utility, for example) or folder such as the Utilities folder, you can restore them without having to reinstall OS X.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Read the documentation. Use Pacifist to extract a fresh copy of the missing application from the file archives on your OS X Installer disc. The file archives are usually found on the installer disc in the /System/Installations/ folder.
After restoring the application you need to reinstall the OS X Combo Updater for the version of OS X you currently have installed. This assures the new copy of the application is updated to the current version.
Lastly, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

• Accidentally deleted Utilites Folder

Hi,
I have accidentally deleted my Utilities folder in 'Applications' thinking it was a folder for Adobe CC which I wanted uninstalled. Trash Can has been emptied, also, and to pay for my sins I never had Time Machine turned on, never thought I'd need it. Oops.
I have a late 2012 (i think) iMac 27". It does not have a disk drive so no good using Disc to reinstall anything. Is there anything I can do? To be honest I didn't even realise anything was wrong until I tried clicking on 'About This Mac' and got nothing.
Please help.
Thanks,
Phil

Restore it from your Time Machine backup or boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) on startup and reinstall OS X. This re-install will not overwrite your data files, however you should ALWAYS have a backup in place before doing so.

• Help...deleted utilities folder!

My wireless mouse is acting up and I managed to delete my entire utilities folder! I checked the utilities folder on the OSX disk but it doesn't seem to have nearly as many utilities I had before like Audio/midi setup, Activity monitor and a bunch more...where can I get these back?

Click here and follow the instructions. You can get Pacifist here.

• I accidentally deleted the "Utilities Folder"

I deleted the Utilities Folder by mistake. Does anyone have any advice on how i can retrieve this folder back ?

Welcome to Discussions - I'm not sure if you can extract it from the install package, I think the simplest thing to do would be to perform an Archive and Install. Read this instructions carefully, and remember to check "preserve user settings and preferences"., Your Utilities should be back and in order.

• My utilities folder has been deleted.

Well don't ask me how but my utilities folder has been deleted. I don't have disk utility or any of that anymore. How can i fix this?

Download the shareware utility Pacifist 2.0 from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the entire Utilities folder from the file archive on your Intel Tiger Installer DVD. The archives may not be "visible" so you will need a utility such as TinkerTool to turn on the Finder's option to display invisible files and folders.
If you haven't emptied the Trash, then it's possible the folder may still be in the Trash. Open the Trash and check. If it's there just drag it out to its proper location in the Applications folder.

• Utilities folder was deleted, how can I get this back?

the utilities folder was deleted by accident. how can I recover the apps that were enclosed? Can I insert my tiger disc and just make a copy? any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can I insert my tiger disc and just make a copy? Not quite, but if you download Pacifist, this will enable you to do it. It comes with good instructions.

• Accidentally deleted /var folder, now recovery utilities not responding to trackpad/keyboard!

So I did something completed stupid, and now have a big problem.
I accidentally deleted /var folder and emptied the trash!!
Now my MBP is stuck at the grey start up screen with the apple & spinng wheel and won't start up..
The weird thing is, now when I enter recovery utilities, everything displays fine except I cannot click anything! The mouse pointer moves but won't respond to clicks! Same with the return on keyboard. Arrow keys work to move among 4 options on os x utilities (time machine/ reinstall/ online help/ disk utility) but when I hit enter, no response! The trackpad & return key works fine up until the point where the mbp asks which language to run the recovery utilities.
All my data is backed up online, and now I just want to reinstall os x and start using my mbp again!
I tried reinstall with an installation disc by holding down 'c' on start, then I hear the installation dvd spinning for 3 seconds, then it would start ticking and won't do anything else for a few minutes until I force shutdown.
Please!!! Can anyone help me?? How can I reinstall os x?? I would really appreciate!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you in advance.
-Michelle

I know it's late but maybe it will help other people.
I ran into the same issue and none of the solutions listed by apple helped.
I booted into single-user mode and I read the log in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/private/var/log/system.log, it was full of errors like theses
Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air locationd[352]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 454: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000sm00006d/C/ modes[2]=0700: No such file or directory
Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air.local locationd[352]: could not create persistent store directory (Input/output error)
Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air locationd[352]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 454: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000sm00006d/C/ modes[2]=0700: No such file or directory
The system actually tried to create directories in /var/folders but the directory /var/folders did not exists, so I created it:
Under single-user mode:
mount -o update /
cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
mkdir var/folders
mkdir var/folders/zz
reboot
And it booted just fine !

• Satellite Pro L300-152: Deleted reocvery folder - But need Recovery DVD

Hi, i recently purchased a laptop from toshiba*
I accidently deleted the folder on my 'data' drive via formating the drive.
I was told i needed that folder within the hard drive to create my recovery disk
Now that folder is gone.
Is there any way in which i can still CREATE the disk or DOWNLOAD/AQUIRE the folder to use for the recovery process to create disk ??
Without resorting to paying for a new disk - [ which costs nearly £30 !!
Please try to help as i am stuck here ...
Thanks

There is nothing you can do. Either you order new copy or use Microsoft installations DVD for clean OS installation.
The drivers, tools and utilities you can find on Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads.
Good luck!

• Bizarre "Utilities" Folder

No matter how many times I set the View Options for my "Utilities" folder, the settings are always forgotten when I restart.
The enclosing "Applications" folder always remembers it's view settings, as do all other folders. But, I continually set my "Utilities" folder View Options to "Always open in list view" as well as show the "Versions" column, and without fail THIS FOLDER ONLY loses all of it's View Options settings after I restart.
It seems especially strange since I always set the "Utilities" view options exactly the same as the enclosing "Applications" folder. Hmmmm?
Has anyone seen a similar issue in Leopard? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've not seen this, but it's possible the hidden file where OSX stores the display preferences for that folder has gotten corrupted.
Click here to download the +Tinker Tool+ app. It allows you to change the Finder to show hidden files (among many other things). Select the first option under Finder, then click +Relaunch Finder+ at the bottom. Reverse this when done.
Do not use any of the other options unless you know the possible consequences.
Use the Finder to display the Utilities folder. One of the first files listed should be named .DS_Store Delete it, close the folder, and try again.

• Utilities folder automatically opens during startup

I'm pretty bitter towards Macintosh ever since I took my laptop to the " 'Genius' Bar " and they accidentally erased all of the data on my computer, so I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me with this.
I downloaded Microsoft Office 2008 today. Of course, I had the infamous keygen problem with Safari. I found the solution to that in another post: I went to Macintosh HD>my home directory>Library>Preferences, where I deleted the file "com.apple.keychainaccess.plist" and restarted my computer.
The Safari keygen problem is fixed, but now whenever I turn on my computer, the Utilities folder opens up automatically. How do I fix that so it doesn't keep popping up whenever I turn on my computer?
Thank you!

• Utilities folder has disapeared.

My utilities folder is gone, which is probably my fault as I was going on a cleaning rampage and probably made a bad deletion shortcut or something, anyway...
It's not in the trash because I emptied that before I realized it was gone. So is there anyway to intall the utilities folder or any other applications without reinstalling the entire OS?

Ian From Alcoa,
If I were in your situation, I would use an Archive and Install, followed by the download/installation of the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC).
If you do not have an Intel system you will have to use the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel) after the Archive and Install.

• Utilities Folder

Hi
My Utilities folder has vanished. Done various searches and it's just gone. Also if you try to get it from the Go menu nothing happens.
Tried looking for it just after I updated to 10.4.8 so don't know if thats anything to do with it.
Help !

Hi
After many efforts I cured my iMac along the following recipe:
1. Make a clone onto a FireWire HD (using Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3)
2. Boot from Clone to see that it works
3. Delete the original volume using Disk Utility
4. Clean Install on newly deleted original Volume
4+ REBOOT
5. Update everything using Software Update (in Apple Menu)
6. Restore Data, Programs etc using Migration Assistant
Et voila, everything seems to work as expected.
In step 4 I added an administrator account, after step 6 I revoked admin-rights from my original account. Now I have one admin-account and various accounts for myself and my kids. With this setup, the system prevents me from doing foolhardy things like manipulating permissions etc.
Although the whole process took quite some time, I feel that it is the best way to cure such a situation.
Normally, I clone my drive to an external FireWire Drive every week or so. Like this, I always have a decently recent backup that I can boot from...
So, that's all and all my best to you people out there and DO NOT FORGET TO BACK UP YOUR DRIVE REGULARLY
