Deleteing a users acct with new home acct?

OK...I gave my gf my 1.33 15", iBook. She had an old 500mhz, graphite iMac. There was so much junk on the iMac I just networked and dragged over the files she wanted to keep. I was afraid syncing the two would put things in weird places and set up weird settings. Just wanted to start a new.
I deleted my user account and added her, however the "Home" icon in finder still has my name. She is listed under users in the HD. Also in the system preferences/accounts, she is listed as the only account, as "Karyls iBook" but my name is still reflected as the "short name". Even unlocking doesn't let me change this name.
How do I set the "Home" icon to reflect her as the user? I'm sure I've screwed something up!
Many Thanks!
Trey

Are you logging on to her account? The "Home" icon always appears on the logged account. I assume you have Fast User Switching turned OFF. When she's the logged admin user the "Home" icon will appear on her user folder. Whatever is there of your old account can be dragged to the Trash and deleted.
If you continue having a problem, then you might try the following:
1. First, boot from your Tiger DVD, select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select your boot hard drive, go to the First Aid tab, and click the button for Repair Disk. Repeat this until no trouble is found. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. Then quit DU, return to the installer and shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes.
This will assure that the drive is OK and permissions are OK.
2. Next, boot to single user mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
3. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
/sbin/fsck -yf
mount -uw /
rm /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when you reboot, it will send you to the startup wizard where you can start a new user without reinstalling.

  • OD Upgrade: merge backed up user data with new accounts?

    Hi All,
After trying many paths to upgrade a 10.6.8 OD server to 10.10 we gave up on export / import of the whole directory. We kept running into the “Existing connection is not authenticated” error caused by some kind of certificate mis-match. Searching for fixes inevitably led to this article which indicates the “rekerberize” method should not be used on Yosemite.
So we punted and installed everything clean from scratch. We think we found a method that restores all users and their home dirs. I’m posting here to see if anyone may critique our method as unsafe. We’ve done some testing but users are not let loose on the new system yet so we aren’t quite 100% certain.
The basic steps we eventually took were:
Grab export of users from 10.6 server
Fresh install of OS X 10.10, patch to 10.10.1 (cloned old system first so we can always go back)
    Install Server
Correctly configure DHCP and DNS and File Sharing
    Create Directory
Create self signed cert (this was necessary to get 10.6 clients to auth; 10.10 clients work out of the box)
Edit user export file to fixup change in FQDN: %s/<old_fqdn>/<new_fqdn>/g
Import users into Directory using the fixed up export file
Copy user home dirs from 10.6 backup into new file share (the user home dir path matches the fixed up export file)
chown each user dir to the new user: sudo chown -R <user>:students /Users/<user> (In earlier passes at the upgrade, we also propagated permissions and ACLs from within Server.app at this step. But the fresh install didn’t seem to need this — chown appears to be enough.)
The Keychain came across with wrong perms and instead of resetting the perms, it made more sense in our case to just delete it: sudo rm -rf /Users/<user>/Library/Keychains
We’ve done a reasonable amount of testing and it looks like all of the user’s files are accessible and working fine. I expect we may find some application data in user home dirs that may have wrong perms (like keychain did) or otherwise be incoherent to the new system. But so far we haven’t found any such issues.
So the crux of this post is: Is it prudent to import user data from another system and expect a simple chown command will make all right with the new system? Or are we glossing over some low-level fundamental (Server File Sharing ACLs?) and creating a time-bomb that will only go off after a week of user data changes at which point any path back out will involve user data loss.
We’re going to start letting some users log on and grab their home dirs in the next day or two. Any and all comments are welcome.
    Thank you,
    -J

Use Migration Assistant to restore your user files. You can find this application in /Applications/Utilities, so connect the external drive with your files, open Migration Assistant and follow the steps. Migration Assistant will create a second user account with your restored files.
Migration Assistant will let you restore everything you had before (applications, pictures, music, videos...) and will let you choose which folders you want to restore. As you want to restore the iTunes library, make sure you check the Music folder.
Respecting to iPhoto, that application is not included with OS X, so you have to download it from the Mac App Store. Just open it, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download it free of charge.

  • Repalce old user ID with new user ID in Org Plan

    Hi,
I have a requirement. In our company, we have different type of user IDs for permanent employees and contractors.
Whenever the contractors postion gets confirmed we will create a new user ID for that person.
Now this new user ID has to be updated in the SRM org plan.
As the user's old user ID is already assigned in the org plan and at the same time user have created lot of shopping carts, we want to replace his old user ID with the new one so that all the shopping carts will not get deleted.
Basically I want to know, how to unassign the user ID from business partner and assign a new user ID.
Is it possible to replace like that? Please advise.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I noticed a feature in txn: BP --> Relationship
In the relationship category, I could see two categories: Replaced by, Is replacing. Not sure what is the exact functionality of that.
Do any one knows about that feature? Could you please advise me on that field?
Also, Is it possible to change the validity period of BP or user assignment ?
Will the above two resolve my issue?
Since user has created many shopping carts and user needs access to those SC with his new users ID, I would like to confirm with you before taking any risk.
    Please help.

  • 4 iphone users each with own itunes acct

we have 4 iphone users in the house.  4 authorized computers. (though we only have 3 computers in the home-the other authorized pc is dead) seems to be that to get my music that I d/l on the mac to itunes I need to erase and sync my phone as it's associated with another itunes library.  so I purchased some songs on the imac and can't get them to my iphone.  same deal with my husbands phone.  Problem is back in the day he synched his phone with another computer.  we purchased a new imac and he synched with the imac.  he wants to get all of his previous stuff from itunes(books and such) but it also says his iphone is associated with another itunes library and you need to erase and sync and it will be replaced with the current itunes library.  (same situation for me) if we do that, we lose a ton of stuff(music , books, apps, etc...) what's the best way to approach this??  we really don't want to erase and sync-and the other computer that he first synched to-is no longer working, it's dead.  So would he have to erase and start over and repurchase things he purchased 3 years ago??  Very frustrating.

Home Sharing might solve your problems, take a look at this article: iTunes: Understanding Home Sharing
You can also share your library over the network if you have different accounts, see this article iTunes: How to share music and video

  • Gray screen after deleting old user accounts - with a twist...

I have two MacBook Pros w/retina displays. Purchased about 6 months apart, they are both running 10.8.4. The newer unit was recently bought from my employer (work unit) and connected to my wi-fi. I set up file sharing and deleted the work-related users accounts on both. When I rebooted, both went to gray screen, apple icon, and wheel spinning.  Then icon only with no wheel.
Command-P-R to repair permissions and repair tasked 3-4 times - Same result after reboot.
Reinstalled OSX on work unit - SUCCESS and all my changes made before the gray screen were intact.
Reinstalled OSX on home unit - The install ran its course but after reboot, gray screen. Command P-R revealed that repair was available but repair permissions button is not grayed out. Repaired 2-3 times.  Same result.  Restalled OSX 3-4 times.  Same result.
The files are intact...at least the space is showing utilized.  My last option is to slave home unit to work unit and transfer all files then reinitiallize.
Help me Obi-Wan. You're my only hope.
    Thx in advance!  DC

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. The battery is distinct from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Trouble with using WoW on Mutable User Accounts with new MacBook Pro

My son just got a new MacBook Pro*. I installed WoW on his account and created an account for me; both are admin accounts. He can startup WoW just fine, but when I start the Launcher, I get a message that the launcher can't download information about the next patch, and to check my network. If I launch the game directly, the icon just bounces on the dock and then quits.
I have checked the permissions and they look good.

I have posted to the Mac Tech support forum, and heads are being scratched. I was wondering if 10.6 was different from 10.5 with regard to mutable users. NOTE that WoW will only work on intel based macs now. so this poor tired old box is done for.
Besides, as I hear it, it is a legacy machine now.

  • Will my pictures be deleted if if sync with new harddisk?

I´ve have used my ipod as a disk and got some pictures on it with my cameraconnecter. Now I got a new harddisk on my computer.
Will my pictures be deleted if I sync it?

If you copied photos to your iPod using the full resolution option, enable disk use, open your iPod in "my computer" in Windows or Finder on a Mac, open the photos folder then open the "full resolution" folder and drag the photos out of that folder to your desktop. For enabling disk use look here.
    Disk Use.
If you only copied the photos as thumbnails, you can't do this so you'll need a program such as this one.
    iPod Photo Copy. (Windows only)
iPod Photo Liberator. (both Mac and Windows versions available)
Photos as thumbnails won't be of the original quality when copied back to your computer.
Once they're back on your computer, you won't lose them.

Can the OS disk that comes shipped with a new iMac be used to update a second computer?
If not, does Mac give the option of upgrading to have the 5 user license shipped with a new computer?
If neither of these are an option, is there a less expensive upgrade I can use on my MBP instead of buying the full $129 OS?

  • Trouble deleting unselectable user folders on new machine

I just recently got a new iMac and was switching files into from my older machine. I had folders for each member of the family under the "places" section on the left hand side of the desktop. Now I have those folders there on the new machine, but they are unselectable, and so I can't delete them. I've already  re-copied legitimate family member folders from my LaCie external HD, but I'd love to get rid of the ghost folders. How?

I had the same problem with migration assistant after a hard disk failure & it wasn't wanting to restore since it was a new computer.  I keep my time machine BU on a time capsule, not a thumb drive, so the first few steps below may vary.
So, look in shared & see if you can find your time machine drive & double-click to open.  There should be a folder called Data.  Open that.  It will take a while to populate, just wait.
There should be 1 (or more if you set up a new machine name at some pt) sparsebundle files in there.  Doubleclick the one you want; it will mount a disk image called Timemachine Backups.  That contains a folder called backups.backupdb.  Open that.  It should have your machine name, open that.  There should be a whole bunch of dated folder; pick the most recent one.  Open that.  It should contain a folder with your boot drive name.  Open that.  Then you should find folders with copies of all the folders you have on there.  You can then drag contents to the matching places on your new machine.  Some applications may not install properly this way, but most of mine did.  Those that didn't I had to get the installer disks our or redownload them.
SO far Time Machine has worked pretty well, except for attempting to fix printer drivers that got hosed by Lion, & got wiped out completly in the repair attempt.  Migration Assistant didn't work.
