Deleting a Admin user account.

I have 2 user accounts both of which are Admin. Would like to delete one as it's now only using space and no longer needed. The last thing I want to do is delete something that keeps me from using things in the remaining account. I do want to transfer over the photos that are in the pictures file. How do I move those pictures without losing them?
I figure that since all the applications are duplicates then deleting that account won't harm them in the other account.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can understand your newbie frustration. However, that Help article I pointed you to contained all your answers. Explicitly;
Deleting a user account
When you delete a user account, you can choose to save the user's files or delete them.
IMPORTANT: If the user's account is encrypted (FileVault is turned on), turn FileVault off for the user before you delete the account.
<snip>
Click OK to save the user's files on the computer, or click Delete Immediately to remove the user account and all the user's files.
If you saved the user's files, they are stored in a disk image in the Deleted Users folder, which is in the Users folder on your Mac OS X disk.
To see the saved files, double-click the disk image in the Deleted Users folder. You can drag the disk image to the Trash to delete the files.
If you didn't understand anything there, you should have come back and posted follow-up questions. Yes, you're correct that most replies are terse. Have you looked at the number of items that get posted? Lengthy tutorials are the exception unless the poster indicates very little knowledge. You asked a simple question and got a straight-forward and concise response on where to find the explicit details. Those with limited knowledge need to provide the details that will elicit more detailed responses. Sorry that Users folder on your Mac OS disk wasn't clear enough.
I suggest, once again, visit Finder->Help->Mac Help->search for Switching from Windows and read the details.
BTW, since the problem's solved, please mark the post answered. Good computing.

  • Safari problem & how do I do admin user account  fix

Using Safari 1.3.2, QT 6.5.2, OSX.3.9 on Mac G4. I have not chosen to upgrade to QT 7 or Tiger because of other apps on this machine.
Safari crashes when I try to empty cache. Problem started after upgrade to above and installing flip4mac. - not sure which caused the problem.
I've already thrown out the suggested things from Safari prefs, plist, cache files from prefs, etc. I also trashed all of the fllip4mac pieces. Didn't fix the problem.
The only solution has been to log in as a different user. So, I guess I have to fix or delete and re-do the problem user account, which is my main admin. user account. I see that the dialogue box says I can save the user folder items into a "deleted user" folder.
Before taking this step, I want to know what happens then? Do I just drag the items back into the new admin. account? I would like some info before I take this step - don't want any regrets. If I can and do drag stuff back, any chance it would bring the problem with it? Will I get all my setting back? How about a step x step on setting up as new admin.?

hello everyone...I got my very first macbook pro just today and i have a problem deleting the "test" user account. if i can't delete it, the system won't let me turn off the system. I don't know what to do! HELP!!!!

Have you created another admin user? Go to system preferences click users and click the + to add a user; if you haven't already. Once you have another admin user other then the "test" user make sure you're signed out of the test user account. Sign in with the alternate ADMIN USER that you just created or had created already and go back to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and click the same USERS icon near the bottom. Now select the TEST user and click the - sign. This should prompt you if your sure you want to delete the user account. And your done.
New User created and Test User deleted... I hope this helps.

  • Swapping and deleting an Admin User

    Hi
I have an old MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. There are two user accounts on the machine, mine and my wifes. My account is currently the Admin user account. I want to delete my account off the mac and make my wifes user account the Admin account. The reason being I don't use the Mac anymore, I have a new one and I'm trying to free up space on the HD and give it a spring clean before upgrading it to Lion.
What's the best approach to swapping the Admin User and deleting the original Admin User? Am I going to run into any Permission or Password issues? Will Disk Utils Repair Permission work it's magic? Would it be better to do this before I upgrade to Lion or are their no advantages/dis-advantages?
Any other advice would be welcome.
    Ta
    David

Just make your wife's account have admin status.
System Preferences --> Accounts --> select account --> unlock with your admin password --> check the check box that says Allow user to administer this computer.
Close preferences, log out and log in to the account you just made admin to verify it does have admin status.  It should say in in the Accounts preferences.  And you could test it by deleting the original admin account.
I specified that sequence just so you could verify you set account as admin before you cut-the-cord and delete your original account.
Note, you made no other changes to the second account other than allow it to be an admin.   So files associated with that account are unaffected with respect to permissions, owner, and group.
Technically it doesn't matter whether you do it before or after upgrade.  But if it were me I would back up my current system before tampering with it and certainly before any major OS upgrade.  Always back up before any major upgrade.
Finally, by the way, repair permissions only repairs apple stuff, not user installed stuff, so it wouldn't affect the account's file and folder permissions anyhow.

  • How to delete a hidden user account?

I recently installed livescribe desktop on my computer and the "other" option at the login appeared.  The account is hidden, how do I delete it?  Is there a way to delete it through terminal?

I found a solution to remove the "other" account that Livescribe creates.  It is on their forum
    http://www.livescribe.com/int/faq/support_forum.html#/forums/showthread.php?t=11 253&page=2
    Under the section
To delete the hidden user account I opened Finder and looked for the following file under the following path: Macintosh HD /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow
I deleted the file and rebooted. Mac rebuilt the login users list, which will reveal the Livescribe hidden account. Login using your admin account (not the Livescribe one) and then go to System Preferences, then Accounts. You will then see the Livescribe account. Delete it like you'd delete any normal account.
This is not a very friendly install.  It opens all kinds of security concerns.  Livescribe should be warned, scolded, or something for doing this.  They also install an adobe app (adobe air) in the process making it look like an update.  this seems really sneaky and is not appreciated.
I lost many hours searching, disconnecting my mac from the net and contemplating a full reformat and reinstallation until I found this.
    NOT NICE AT ALL.
At least I have gotten rid of the account now.

  • How to replace corrupt Admin user account (OS 10.2.8)?

My OS 10.2.8 Admin user account has somehow become corrupted, and is causing problems opening my Photoshop CS2 properly.
I have set a new user account and the problems with Photoshop CS2 are gone.
So therefore, I would like to set up a new user "Admin" acccount WITHOUT LOSING any of my functioning software attached to the current account (as Photoshop CS2 is all that seems to be wrong with
    the current user account).
I'm pretty sure that I would just go into System Preferences and set up a new account user (me), and then delete the old Admin account.
Would this affect any of my existing installed software, as I really don't want to have to go installing about 20 GB of software again!
Any suggestions would be welcome ...... Thanks.
    -David

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and create a new administrator account; from here, log in with that account. If all your software works properly in this account, it is safe to delete the original one. If you are asked which account you want to reassign items to, pick your current account.

  • Safari 5 seems to have slowed the OS for my Admin user account

After installing Safari 5 (now 5.0.2), and after a few Safari hangs and force quits, my OS for my Admin user account has become slow. Opening folders and seeing the contents is slow; moving small documents from folder to folder is very slow; cutting and pasting text in a MS Word document sometimes takes two or three tries, as the text highlighting cursor function has slowed. (Interestingly, Safari's basic click and pageload functions seem to work fairly normally, but with the same highlighting and copy/paste slowness that affects all other programs. Also, my mouse pointer moves quickly as per normal.)
However, I created a new user account as a test comparison and found that the new user account is NOT slow. It works perfectly fine.
Any thoughts on what I should do? Is my original Admin account corrupted? Is it possible to simply move my personal files (Word docs, iTunes songs, bookmarks) to the new user account and then delete my original Administrator account?
What should I do? Thanks everyone.

Well, it was worth a shot.
How full is your hard drive? Always a good starting point for diagnosing slowdowns.
Sometimes running periodic maintenance scripts helps, because it cleans some caches that a Safari reset won't. The scripts are supposed to run automatically in the wee hours of the morning when most people are computing, but the problem is that they only run if the computer is on and not sleeping. Not too realistic.
This article in an excellent series of "keep the Apple sweet" articles talks about the scripts and how to run them manually:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
They are less important in later incarnations of Mac OSX as some o the tasks they do were shifted to start-up, but doing them is worth trying.
Also use Activity Monitor to check for a runaway background process. It's possible that this could affect only one user account. If you've not used Activity Monitor before, make sure you change its "Show" option from the default of "My Processes" to "All Processes" or you might miss some nasty troublemakers. Also click in the "%CPU" column header to sort by processor usage. With no user apps running, (basically an idling computer) no single process should demand more than ~5 percent of the processor. Let AM display for a few minutes while you watch it, as some processes toggle back and forth as they activate.
Running any anti-virus software? Most does more Mac-harm than Mac-good.
    Keep us posted!

i use migrate assistant to move files from my old pc to the new Mac , but it creates the user account. How can i delete the unwanted user account.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • How do i delete the old users account on my second hand imac g5 without the origonal disc

im new to imacs and not sure how to delete the old users account without the origonal disc

First of all, you need to make sure your current user account (the one you intend to keep) is an administrator account (not standard).
Go to System Preferences Accounts pane.  Click the lock, if it's locked, and enter your authorization, to unlock.
In the sidebar, you will see the list of user accounts.  To delete a user account, select it on the list and click the minus sign.

  • InitialContext.unbind() deleted the admin user for LDAP server...

    Hi,
I am doing a connection to a LDAP server from Java code. Everything was fine for several days. But today I noticed that I don't execute an unbind operation and decided to put the necessary code. So I used InitialContext.unbind(). The result was that on the first execution of my program everything was OK. But on the second execution I was not able to bind to the server at all with the constructor of InitialLdapContext class even after restarting the machine from which I execute the Java code and the machine with the server. So it went that the admin user I was using for bind and unbind credentials was deleted. I am sure that the unbind() method is causing the problem because I actually broke the two LDAPs that I have (testing referrals...).
Now I use close() method instead of the unbind() method and everything is OK but I wonder how is this possible and why is it not documented?

I can't imagine documenting something like "This method will delete the admin user from your server". If that's the case then it's a bug, not something to be documented. Report it to whoever wrote your Java implementation. If that's Sun, then here:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/login.do
You might also want to look into your LDAP server and see if it's a known bug there.

  • Help-I want to move my stuff out of admin user account to a non-admin user account for security.  How can this be done?

So... I have amassed loads of documents, videos, music, photos, etc. onto my MacBook Pro all under the admin user account I set up for myself.  I am the only one who uses the MacBook.  I now work virtually and am online at different free wifi spots, and I want to access all of my stuff under a non-admin user account for security reasons.
I attempted to uncheck the "allow this user to administer this computer" box under my admin user account, but it is greyed out and I cannot.
Is there an easier way to fix this than backing up all of my stuff and then moving it to a non-admin account?

There is only one solution: create a new Standard user account and set it as your auto login account, if you use that feature.
Using what you describe is mostly a false sense of security. Were someone to hack into the computer they could hack into the standard account, so you would not wish to keep any sensitive data in that account. Other things to consider:
Turn on your Firewall in Security & Privacy preference panel.
Use software to mask your online presence such as ProxyCap 2.03, MacProxy, Proxifier, or Hotspot Shield.

  • Admin User Account is Corrupted

Is there a way to fix a corrupted admin user in FCSvr? I know this is a vague question but I have no way of finding out what caused the corruption.
My main admin user account no longer sees all of the assets within FCSvr when I search in the asset browser. I could just create a new user but if there is a way to correct this is would be helpful as I have many users on my system and fixing and existing users would be better than creating new ones.

After a little further investigation this is what I've found:
When searching for assets within FCSvr there are 2 users (of 10 or so) seem to get different when using the same search words. I've made sure the "sort by" category is set to "none" when searching so in theory everyone should get the same search results. Two don't.
I checked the StoreD Logs per dredcomm's suggestion and this is what I've found:
