Deleting a Deleted File

It's stupid, I know, but holy !@#$%... I was cleaning up my Project folder because Logic saved a bunch of audio files in there I didn't want it to (impulse responses etc.) and I took everything to the trash and emptied it (yeah yeah, I'm not supposed to touch that stuff, whatever, it's supposed to just be a quick MIDI sketch for a song). Nothing I needed was in there, but Logic is still looking for one @#%!#$% file. Do I want to search for it? No. Can I delete it from the Audio window? No... because I can't select it. Because I already deleted it. But I can't delete it from Logic because it's already deleted. ***?! Am I missing something? Does this have to be insanely difficult? DP has a way to "Remove file from this list."

I'm a little confused here... are you trying to recover the .lso, or just clean up the "mess" left behind?
If you're looking to clean up the mess, and you saved your song as a project, all of the files will be in one or two places (provided you didn't constantly change your record path when recording audio):
a) if you selected "move" for most/all options when you saved the Project, a single folder on your drive somewhere to which you saved the Project
b) if you selected "copy" for most/all options when you saved the project, the files will live in the above-mentioned folder, plus wherever else you may have originally saved your data. So if you can find the project folder, you can copy/paste various filenames of the projects component files into Spotlight (one at a time) and locate other instances of them elsewhere on your system. Usually a search for one file will lead to the others.
Finally, you had written previously:

This is an indication that another song (likely a backup copy of the song you deleted, or possibly your autoload song) uses those audio files. So it's conceivable that your song is partially recoverable, and if so, after you find it, you can see the path to those audio files (Audio window, view=drive) and do some manual clean-up from there.

Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.

That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).

I would like to know the exact error message when you sign in, in the meanwhile please try the following steps assuming its Windows, let me know if its a MAC:
1) Go to Start button>> Control panel>> Uninstall a program.
2) Check if you see Browser safeguard there, if yes then uninstall it.
3) Open Internet explorer>> Tools>> Internet options>> Connections>> Lan Settings>> and it should be like this.

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.

Error Deleting/Archiving processed files

Hi all,
I'm working with a File (xml) to Idoc scenario. I have configured Sender File Channel to read files and after that deleting . SAP XI can read the files (xml files) and send to my SAP R/3 system but I in communication channel monitoring I get a message "Could not delete file 'p:.xml' after processing".
I have tried with archiving and I get a similar error, but in this case it makes the archiving twice (I get 2 files in the archiving directory) and it doesn´t delete the original file from the reading directory, so SAP XI is ever reading and archiving.
Does anyone know any solution?

can you check if those files have <b>read only</b> attributes?
if so you cannot delete them from the directory ? (or archive )

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup. My iPhone only shows the most recent backup. I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files). How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

Thanks Niel for the script, unfortunately I am too ignorant about running these on my own, I did save it in my user script library, but I would need instructions to run it. I would be really grateful.
I did try making up my own workflow using the given actions in Automator, the first action was to 'find specific files in finder' ending with .zip and .rar and then choosing another action which 'moves selected files to trash'. Unfortunately it ended up running only if I specify the path to the specific .zip file, which defeats the purpose. Any suggestions on the proposed workflow? Thanks in advance.

source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
to think again.

I can't delete the master file, which is located on my external HD, through aperture

I import a folder to aperture which is stored on my external HD, and keep the originals on the HD. If I try to delete a master file with the option, file-delete master image and all versions, the photo deletes from Aperture, but not my hard drive. I have even tried to delete my trash, but no luck. Please help, otherwise I do not want to use aperture for file management, which was one of my major reasons for buying it.

After you've deleted a file it from the project it goes into Aperture Trash. When you empty Aperture Trash (Aperture>Empty Aperture Trash) you will get a dialogue box asking "Are you sure you want to permanently delete all items in the Trash?" Under this there is a checkbox giving you the option to "Move referenced files to System Trash". If you check this box it will move the master to the system trash, and from there you can permanently delete the file.
All this is to stop you from accidentally deleting work.
