Deleting a file does NOT move it to Trash

Recently my hard drive failed on my iMac, and it was replaced and the data salvaged.  However, now, when I delete a file, a window opens telling me if I proceed, the file will be permanently deleted.  That is, it no longer is placed in the Trash, where I have an opportunity, at some point, to empty it, or even reverse the deleting and move the file back.  I cannot figure out what setting has changed, and what I need to do to move items into the Trash Can, with the change to "crumpled paper" in the Trash Can waiting to be emptied.  What do I need to do to have deleted files move to the Trash rather than being irrevocably destroyed?  I've gone to Finder Preferences and see no option to fix this problem.

See this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20210112?ac_cid=tw123456#20210112 for the solution.

I get the message that my startup disk is full. It says to delete some files to make more space; but after deleting some files, this message will reappear again after a while.  What else can be done?

I hope you haven't removed anything that involves the system.
I hope you haven't remove things willy nilly, either.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

I doubt that re-installing Thunderbird will help. But if you do, it should pick up your existing profile and carry on as if nothing had happened, which probably means you'll have exactly the same problem.

  • Deleting files does not clear disc space

Early 2011 Mac book pro running 10.9.4. Deleting iPhoto files does not create additional space.  iPhoto is about 160gb, iTunes which I use for viewing slideshows remotely is about 135gb.

Thanks for the reply.  Have now changed from Mavericks to Yosemite and now it appears to be working as it should.  Will post again after some experimentation

    Hello all,
I am getting the following error message when I launch a specific FCP project.
The movie file "Grant Short 8-FIN-000000b9" cannot be found. Without this file the movie cannot play properly.
In order to get the projects to launch I need to go through various "cancel" / "stop" operations as the application attempts to find this file. I am running into various problems once I do get it to launch. Any idea as to the nature of this file and steps to remedy the situation? I did a spotlight search and the file does not exist anywhere.
    I am running version 5.1.4.
thanks in advance for any guidance with this problem.

It's a render file that's referenced by a reference quicktime. This is the danger of not making selfcontained qt's. If you use a reference qt in a fcp project and you delete media that the qt references, this is what happens. If at all possible, it's good idea to always export selfcontained qt's (if you've got the disk space).

  • Dfsr files does not replicate

    Hi,
We're running dfsr on 2008R2 servers to replicate files, and I discovered that some files are just not replicated.
These files are not temporary files (checked using fsutil), and not filtered by file mask define on replicated folder properties (ususally ~*, *.bak, *.tmp).
It looks like a dfsr db corruption, but I don't know how to solve this. I don't know how to reset the db as some members are domain controllers.
    Here's the configuration:
server1 and server2 are 2008R2 domain controllers. The replication group is ks2share-idcl.
    - on server 1: file REPL-ERROR.pdf is modified
    - on server 2: file not present
below is the dfsr.log output for each server.

We can see on server the message "LocalDominates Local version dominates localgvsn", but file does not exists....
    Please help.
    Vincent

    Hi,
Though you tried to delete, have you tried rename, or move them into a different folder?
And you mentioned fsutil so I assume you have already know the following article. But still incase some steps were missed:
DFSR Does Not Replicate Temporary Files
    http://blogs.technet.com/askds/archive/2008/11/11/dfsr-does-not-replicate-temporary-files.aspx
Meanwhile, I don't think reset DFSR database will affect AD replication. NTDS.dit is stored in a different location. If it will not work with a rename (and change path), you can test to reset DFSR database.
    1.       Stop and ALSO disable the DFSR service on <ServerA> server (don't just simply stop it)
    2.       In Windows Explorer open the specific drive
    3.       Right click on the "System Volume Information" directory and select Properties\Security
Note: You might need to select the option for "Show hidden files, folders or drives" and also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" in the folders view options to be able to even see the "System Volume Information" directory.
    4.       Grant your user account that you're logged in with (if a member of Administrators group this will also suffice) "Full Control" to the "System Volume Information" directory.
Note: You may get an error on setting security on some files - this is expected.
    5.       Open an elevated/Administrative command prompt. Switch to the "<drive letter>:\System Volume Information" directory
    6.       Type the command "rmdir DFSR /s"
    7.       Enable and re-start the DFSR service on <ServerA> server
    8.       We will then set the <ServerA> server as the Primary member with dfsradmin.exe utility –
    Dfsradmin Membership Set /RGName:<RG Name> /RFName:<RF Name> /MemName:<Member Name> /IsPrimary:True
Note: Files will be replicated from ServerA to all other targets. So if there is any newer file on other target servers, backup before starting replication.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and un-mark them if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected].

I deleted the user from the userlist and reprocessed security. I added the user again in the admin group and reporcessed user security. Same error.
When the user logs on on citrix using her profile  and starts Webexcel using my profile - no problem.
My profile has administrator rights and she may not have them. So I really want her into the usergroup.
We renamed the file to upload to a file with 8 characters - same problem.
Anyone any experience with this error and how to solve it ?
    Thanks for your reply.

    Hello,
From what I understand from your log file, this is a custom import package. It is failing into the last step, loading data into the cube and it seems there is no file to be loaded. If the same package is working well for the other users, this means that the user has not enough security rights to load data from that file (maybe the file contains data for which the user is not authorized to see).
To understand better what is happening, just try to activate the debug using the DEBUG(ON) instruction into EvModifyPackage. This will create more information regarding the parameters passed to your tasks and you will be able to identify the file name passed to Dump&Load task.
You can verify then into Private publication\user name\Temp files the content of file (and the content of all temporary files generated by your package) and this will help you to understand where is the problem.
    Hope this can help you,
    Mihaela

  • File does not exist?

I am producing a weekly music review podcast. The page's information is on is http://haveyouheardmusic.blogspot.com
The feed for the project is http://feeds.feedburner.com/haveyouheardmusic
My feed was rejected from itunes and podcastalley (but not Digg). PCA throws an error that says something similar to "File does not exist" in reference to my rss enclosure.
Everyone is able to subscribe to the feed manually. My podcast validates at podcast validating sites.
I need help to fix my feed so I can submit my podcast to Podcast Alley and iTunes.

    Hello,
As far as I can see from my system, this is a simple HTML document, with some links to other HTML document on the same directory, dealing with the Oracle HTTP server. The file was probably deleted by mistakes, and should not affect the server work. The simplest solution will be to just copy it from another OHS.

  • Lookout 6.6 - Logon Error: Security file does not exist

I'm trying to run Lookout 6.6 evaluation. It loads fine, I get a message saying that it's running evaluation version. I press OK to clear that box and a logon window opens. It's filled in with the default settings, Administator, local doman, no password. I click Log On and it gives me the error which is in the subject line, security file does not exist.
I've read on here that the lookout.sec file doesn't exist in the System32 folder. In this case, I've found it and it's there.
I've trying different user names, I took the .sec file and copied it in various locations: windows folder, and the programs root folder - obviously there was no effect. I tried editing the lookout.ini file to remove the log on information to see if that clears it up (even deleted the file to see if that work), but to no avail. I also tried re-installing the program, but there is no uninstall button - windows program removal tool cannot even remove, modify, or repair the program. I ran the install a couple of times as well.
Does anyone know what I can do?
    Here's what I'm running:
    (I bought this computer today)
    Windows 7 x64-bit Home Premium
    4gb ram
    500gb hard drive
It's very minimal, since all the computer is meant to do is run this program and replace the computer Lookout 5.0 was running on (mobo got fried).
    - Please - let me know if you have any suggestions.
    Solved!

    Hi Mike! Thanks for replying!
I've just tried it in admin mode and it hasn't worked. I've also tried using compatability mode, but to no avail.
I downloaded the lookout 6.2 version to try and it gives me the same error as well.
Another thing to note, I tried uninstalling it (either lookout 6.6 or 6.2 doesn't matter), but all options it gives (modify, repair, and uninstall) are all greyed out.
    Any thoughts/ideas?

  • This file does not have a program associated with it...

Ok, I'm not awesome at technological troubleshooting, so if someone could help me, I would be grateful because I'm getting frustrated.
I'm trying to play a silly little game online and it's telling me I need Shockwave.  I know I have it because I've played this game before (something time-wasting on addictinggames.com) and I found a file called Shockwave 11 in C:\\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11 with all sorts of things in it.
I checked my Add/Remove Programs list and it says I have Adobe Shockwave 11.5 and that it is used rarely.
Since there seems to be a glitch here that I don't understand, I went to the Download Shockwave page on this site and tried to download the latest version or whatever, if that would work.  The gray progress bar moves across under the "Adobe Shockwave Player is now installing" line and then I get an error popup that says:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
What am I supposed to do?  What does this mean?  What file?  Huh??
I am running Internet Explorer 7 and have Windows XP.
I am a total noob and need to be spoken to like a child.  Can anyone please help me?

I clicked on your link (thank you - where did you get that?) and installed the Full version, apparently successfully, though during the download there were a couple of components that were troublesome.
The error message I got during setup read: "Error opening file for writing: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Director\SWDNLD.EXE   Click Abort to stop the installation, Retry to try again, or Ignore the skip this file."  Retry did not work, despite having clicked it 10s of times.  I clicked Ignore, then got the same message again, but about a different file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Director\SwDir.dll   Clicking Retry again did not help move things along, so I ignored this one too.  What does this problem indicate?  Do I need to do something here?
Those are the only errors encountered during setup.  I declined the Google toolbar.  The dialog box says Successfully Completed; I clicked Close.
So I go to try to play this game as a test and it says "Installing Shockwave Components" and then I get the same error popup telling me that this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action and that I need to create an association in the Folder Options control panel!
What does this mean and how do I do it, since it appears to be critical to getting this thing to work...?

  • File Does Not Have Proper Content

    Hello,
I'm working on rebuilding a project file after some knucklehead at work deleted many of the files in the project (don't worry, the person is still alive).
After re-transcoding and re-synching all the files (interviews, to be precise), most of them have been able to be re-linked fine, even when the attributes of the clip have changed slightly.  One of them, however, is being grumpy
When I try to reconnect it to the file, it says:
"The file does not have the proper content to reconnect to 'clip name' at timecode x in sequence y."
Is there any way to work around this?  I don't understand why all the other clips, some of which changed much more between their original versions and the new ones I've made, were able to be relinked when this one refuses.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    BWP

You may have to simply reimport and cut the material into the sequence.
This may be faster than trying to finesse a reconnect.
