Deleting a locked folder

I have an external hard drive I want to use with time machine so I am cleaning it out. It has a bunch of stuff from my PC that I backed up when I got my iMac.
How do I unlock locked folders that I no longer need. I want to delete them. I have tried to unlock it in the 'get info' section by unchecking the box but that doesn't work.
Thanks in advanced.

  • I don't have a locked folder to unlock it

    Hello,
    My ipod classic 3 generation this morning was on lock, which it has never been since I got it. So I went online and found a way to unlock it. But unfortunately the only way to unlock it is to have a "locked" folder on my ipod which I do not have. How am I suppose to unlock it when the only way to is not there? Please help!!

    I have restored my ipod and tried to restart it, but that doesn't seem to work either.
    I saw online that you are to make your hidden files known and than you delete the locked folder and than my ipod should unlock, is it a lost cause to get it or do I need to get another ipod?

  • Locked folder I can't get rid of.

    I was burning a data-DVD of some photos when I hit a snag navigating in Finder, and so I control-clicked on Finder and told it to relaunch. But by doing that, it interrupted the DVD burn. Now, I have a folder on my desktop that is called Untitled DVD that is locked, and I can't get rid of it. I can't unlock it either. When I try, Tiger tells me I don't have permission to do that. I tried to move it so it wouldn't be on my desktop, and instead, it just copied it to another folder. So now I have two of these stupid, useless folders.
    So, any ideas on how I can get rid of these folders? They're not taking up that much room, but they are annoying.

    Delete the locked folder with Terminal (in Applications > Utilities):
    1. Open Terminal window
    2. Type 'sudo rm -rf ' (Not the ' marks, just what is between them. Yes, that is a space on the end. _Do not press enter yet_.)
    3. Drag the offending folder into the terminal window. Its path should be entered after the text you have typed. Click in the Terminal window to switch back into Terminal (from Finder).
    4. Press enter/return.
    5. Type your admin password.
    6. Wait until the prompt appears again (may take some time).
    7. Quit Terminal.
    Follow the above instructions *carefully and exactly* (rm -rf is capable of deleting anything).
    Hope this helps...

  • For some reason, I cannot change my desktop background no matter how many times I delete the "active" folder.  It's as if it's locked.  Any ideas how I can fix it?

    Yes it sounds like you have a corrupted preference file.
    The setting you make in individual programs get saved to a Preference file in your Users/Library/Preferences folder.
    All you have to do is drag out the old file to the desktop, reboot and load the program and the preference file gets rebuilt without your preferences which you reset.
    For your case I beleive the preference file is
    com.apple.desktop.plist

  • Locked folder with virus - delete

    I have a folder on a USB stick that picked up a virus when connected to a PC.
    It appears as a zip folder and is locked. I cannot unlock it and cannot trash it.
    Is there a way to force delete such a folder? I wish to continue using the stick and do not want to transfer the virus to other PC users.
    Thanks

    use searchlight to find terminal (or click on /Application/Utilities/Terminal.app )

  • Deleted My Music Folder

    I have lost/deleted "my music" folder from my computer, i can no longer open iTunes without it, the following error message appears when i try to open it-- The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder
    i have restored the music files/songs from my iPod onto a different folder, how do i now get iTunes working again without the original "my music" folder or how do i make a new “my mucis” folder. I really like using all the iTunes functions and wish to continue using it. Is there a third party application that will allow me to use the same function as iTunes?

    Perhaps this Apple Support article will help:
    iTunes for Windows XP: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
    Regards.

  • I accidentally deleted user template folder

    Soooo, I accidentally deleted the locked User Template folder in the Mac Library. Yes, I am an idiot. Not sure why. I unlocked it thinking it was something for my Adobe Photoshop that I recently got rid of and I'm trying to free up space on my computer.
    It hasn't effected my computer YET, but I am a little afraid to turn the computer off.
    What do I need to do?
    I have a 10.7 Mac OS X Lion. It's a Macbook Air, 11', Mid-2011.

    Since applications are much smaller generally then the data is their deletion is usually not very productive. A far more productive way is to delete data files such as movies, videos, music and photos.
    How much free space do you currently have on your disk drive?

  • Lightroom crashed and now I can't open the catalog - even after deleting the lock file.

    Lightrooms crashed, which is a common occurrance. But, this last time was different. After I restarted it my catalog was not linked and all my settings were gone. I tried opening the catalog through the file menu, but absolutely nothing happens. I tried going to the folder and clicking on it but this only opens lightroom with no catalog. After having scanned this forum I found that I need to delete the .lock file, but after doing that the same things happen. Any suggestions on how to open my catalog? Will reinstalling Lightroom help?

    The problems mostly happen when I am using X-Y compare in Library mode. It shows black rectancles over the tops of the sections that contain the photos and these flash. They aren't always the same size, but are only on the top of the section - never big enough to completely cover the photos. Then I get anywhere from one to about four or five extra windows stacked on top of the Lightroom Icon at the bottom of my screen (I use Windows 8) opening and closing, though there isn't enough time for me to click on them and read them because my computer gets so slow that my mouse actin is delayed by a few seconds. And, to shut Lightroom down, I need to use Windows task manager because clicking on the little red box with the X in the upper right corner accomplishes nothing. I have a new Sony Vaio i5 chip and 8Gb RAM. This also hapened on my old computer, though not as often

  • Safari problem - lock folder

    My brother in law has a Safari problem with his MacBook. When launching Safari in the main account, it will lauch, open a window and quickly crash. After it crashed, a folder named "Lock" is created in the Users>(Main account)>Library>Safari folder. We tried deleted this folder and relaunching Safari, but Safari crashed upon launch and this lock folder is recreated. Safari works just fine in the other account, so it is definitely something unique to the main user file. Here a copy of the crash log, if that helps:

    I'll give the history delete a try. The file in the lock folder is a preference file. Here is it's contents:

  • Locking Folder - questions

    I have a folder named "Photos" that I store my photographs in that I have many folders and folders within folders and photo files in.
    I had a scare last night as I burnt some photos to DVD, yet there were too many, so I went to remove them from the DVD (by dragging to trash) and at some point I actually double clicked the aliases on the DVD and was inadvertently dragging some folders to the trash that were the real files on the HD. Luckily, I had everything backed up and recovered.
    I'd like to avoid this in the future. Can I simply "lock" the "Photos" folder and protect all folders and files in the "Photos folder" or do I have to individually lock each folder in the "Photos" folder.
    I did a test run and locked "Photos" It successfully locked me from dragging things into "Photos" (which is good), but then I dragged a folder out of "Photos" to the desktop (which I thought it wouldn't allow me and would also be good) but it did allow folders in there to be removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop. I won't attempt to drag folders from "Photos" to the trash and delete for obvious reasons but I just wonder if the locked folder would allow that to occur also.
    Update: I just did a quick test by creating an untitled folder and locking it and placing folders with files in them in the untitled folder. I locked the untitled folder and when I dragged something out of it to the desktop it only made a copy of the folder (and it's contents) on the desktop and retained the folder in the locked untitled folder. What puzzles me is that if I like "Photos" and drag a folder out of it, the original folder is removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop (not a copy) - strange!

    my last sentence should have read
    "What puzzles me is that if I lock "Photos" and drag a folder out of it, the original folder is removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop (not a copy) - strange!"

  • What is Lock folder doing ?

    I would like to lock a folder so that I can open the folder and the documents inside it but not alter anything
    If you Ctr Click the folder , then press Get Info, you can lock the folder
    But what is it doing ?
    I noticed that I could not add new files to the folder. That is all.
    I do not want to used complicated procedures such as with Disk Utilities

    Bomiboll wrote:
    Yes sir. That's the situation. I can edit it, I can save it, and to the same place.
    It means that this is a flaw in Mac OS.
    No, it just means you don't understan Posix permissions and the Access Control Entries.
    Locking a folder doesn't do anything but Lock the folder. Access to the contents are still controlled by the Posix permissions and the ACEs. Setting a folder to Locked in Get Info sets the uchg flag. That will prevent you from changing the Folder, but not it's contents, which still have the same settings as they had before you Locked the folder. You can override the delete, but you can't rename or move it (which are the same things in unix), or add items into it. If you want to lock all the files inside, you have to select them all and lock them.
    Using the shell,
    chflags -R uchg /Users/username/Documents/My\ Locked\ Folder/
    In unix, a folder is really nothing but a part of the full name of the file. E.g.
    /Users/username/Documents/My\ Locked\ Folder/myFile.txt
    A better way to achieve what you want is to set it to Read Only for User, Group, and Others
    In the Finder, Get Info on the folder and unlock the padlock on the Permissions section.
    Set yourself to read only.
    Set the group(s) and everyone to no more than Read Only.
    Cick the Gear icon and choose Apply to Enclosed.
    In the shell,
    chmod -R -w /Users/username/Documents/My\ Locked\ Folder/
    The uappend flag is more like what you want. It allows adding to the folder, but not editing the contents.
    So, you could lock the folder and set it to not let you change the contents at all with:
    chflags uchg,uappend /Users/username/Documents/My\ Locked\ Folder/
    However, some programs will allow you to authenticate to make changes to the files, even with those settings.
    Then there's Access Control Lists which further add to the complexity. This help page for Tinker Tool System is a brief introduction. If you search for OS X ACL you will find lots of articles on how to set them.

  • Delete file from folder only (not from list)

    Hi all,
    I've searched a lot and didn't succeed so far, that's why I need your help. In a cloud context, I'm actually creating and uploading files (pdf and/or xml files) "on the go" to sharepoint folders via the SOAP API and this is perfectly working. But
    in a cloud context, I also need to decomission services which is translated into deleting files into Sharepoint.
    That's where it became complicated, because according to the API we cannot delete files if they are not part of a list structure, which is not my case. Is that true ?
    The only info I have when trying to delete a file via the SOAP Api is : its name, its folder, and the endpoint where the folder is. So my question remains simple I guess : is this possible ? If so, how to (a link to the SOAP body would be usefull)
    Thanks a lot
    Regards
    Baptiste

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to delete file from folder.
    In SharePoint 2010, It is recommended to use Client Object Model to achieve it, the following code snippet for your reference:
    string siteURL = "http://siteurl";
    ClientContext context = new ClientContext(siteURL);
    //specific user
    NetworkCredential credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password", "domain");
    context.Credentials = credentials;
    Web web = context.Web;
    context.Load(web);
    context.ExecuteQuery();
    string relativeUrl =web.ServerRelativeUrl +"/DocumentLibraryName/FolderName/FileName";
    File file = web.GetFileByServerRelativeUrl(relativeUrl);
    context.Load(file);
    file.DeleteObject();
    context.ExecuteQuery();
    If you still want to use SOAP API, we can use the UpdateListItems method under Lists web service to achieve it.

  • TS4153 few files and folder are not deleting from trash folder

    i am trying to delete all files and folders from the trash folder by clicking  empty securely, but its not deleteing the files anf folder. please suggest how to clean the trash folder by deleteing all the deleted files and folder.

    Securely deleting items in Trash writes Zeros over the data so that it is completely eradicated.
    This will take quit a long time depending on how much data you have in Trash.
    Unless there is data that needs to be rendered unrecoverable in the Trash, you could choose to just delete the files and folders with out the secure option.
    Once you have Emptied the Trash unsecurely you can always use disk utility to Securely Erase Free Space on the Drive.

  • Trash will not delete from trash folder! What can cause this effect?

    Trash will not delete from trash folder! What can cause this effect?

    u can actually force it to delete, oviously i assume you dont have the application or data etc open neware else?
    try restarting your computer, go into finder close all your open applications etc, servers, **** even clear your data in your web browser, do a disk utility check and verify your drives and repair em if nessicary.
    as chamar suggested look at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
    i had the same problem before but with a good 5-10 minutes of googling i was able to solve it..
    best of luck
