Deleting a program duplicated in Admin/another account name

Background: My newly updated Firfox browser on my regular user account (herein called User) works fine. I transfered it via usb stick to my Admin account because I want it there too. The Admin account version is causing major weirdness to my system (certain links won't work, Dock went beserk....
Here's the question: If I uninstall Firefox from the Admin account so I can attempt a resintall, can I be sure that it won't also be deleted at the User account? Or will Firefox totally disappear from all accounts in the hard drive?

Um...maybe I better map this out?
I'm the only one who uses my computer.
First I had only an Admin account. Recently, I learned it's best to not use the Admin, so I created another (User) account and copied everything I used on the Admin to the User account.
Both accounts used the old 1.07 Firefox.
Deciding to upgrade to the newer 1.5 Firefox, I downloaded it from my PC (as only that computer has a Download program with Resume on it and I can only be on the internet in 4 hour intervals. ( My Dial-up account time limit.) For whatever reason, my Mac is much too slow downloading to do this.
From the PC I used a usb memory stick to transfer the file while logged in to my User account. Everything was fine. Backed up the file to my larger external storage device.
I then decided to upgrade the Firefox version on my Admin account as well by transferring the file from my external storage device while in the Admin account. This is where everything went screwy.
The User account Firefox still works great, but the Admin account seems to be allergic to the newer Firefox.
Here is where Firefox shows in the User account:
Macintosh HD> Applications> Firefox
The owner is the Admin, the availibility is READ ONLY.
(I'd go into Admin and find out where Firefox is located there, but that would kick me off the internet here. So if you need that info as well, let me know and I'll post it when I have more time to do so.)
Okay, in Newbie Terms, is it safe for me to reinstall the older version over my newer version of Firefox currrenly sitting in my Admin account and not have this also wipe out the Firefox program sitting in my User account?
(And I am appreciative of the advice so far, but after consecutive overnites with little sleep in between, what little I had in brain power is absolutely fried and I can't seem to wrap my brain around anything more than Newbie Terms right now.)

  • Is there a way to delete music that was bought on another account?

So I have an iPod classic 60GB that I got from my brother in law.  There are over 3000 songs on it and I'm wanting to know if I can just transfer the DRM free songs to my library.  There appears to be 2 accounts that songs on the iPod were purchased with.  I would obviously like to have the songs that will play on my computer, but would rather not have to deal with finding each individual song and then deleting them if they won't play.  Any suggestions?

iTunes Match will do that for you, turn it on in the Store menu (in iTunes). It's $25 per year.

  • HT1923 Reinstalling iTunes, but unable to delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\.  I have admin status, but I get an error saying "Destination Folder Access Denied"

Following instruction to reinstall iTunes, uninstalled iTunes and related components, verified all deleted.  Need to delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ manually, but am getting and error that says "Destination Folder Access Denied".  I do have admin status on my user account.  What's next?  Many of the files in these directories are Mobile Me and iCloud, should I uninstall those too?

I have the same problem and it looks like others do too. I have spent far too much time trying to find a solution but nothing has worked so far.
Does "end windows explorer for the processing menu" mean to end explorer.exe in the processes window in Windows Task Manager?  Does "start new task" means File-New Task in Windows Task Manager?  If so, the solution does not work for me.
Any other suggestions would be deeply appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • How do I delete an "Admin, Managed" account from my macbook?

I accidentally made one of my accounts an "Admin, Managed" account and I can't figure out how to delete it; I don't need the account anymore and I want to delete it. I already have an admin account that is the "official" admin but even from that account I am unable to delete this other account.

Very interesting, thank you for the update.
I would next reset the network settings on the phone, in case there is some info there that is stuck and causing the issue:
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
I would also check these locations to see if the account is signed in anywhere else as an Apple ID in your Settings:
    iCloud
    iTunes & App Stores
    Messages
    FaceTime
    Game Center
If not I would as a last resort, backup your iPhone with this article:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
And restore it from your backup with this article and test the issue:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
If the issue persists when restored, then restore it as a new device and test the issue to help isolate the data in the backup.

    Hello aweirandyski.1975,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From what you're describing appears to be Activation Lock, a security measure provided by Apple that makes it harder for people to use a lost or stolen device.  You will need to enter the password for the Apple ID the device is prompting you for.

  • Can't run programs from non-admin account

I'm new to the Mac and rusty with -- but not new to -- UNIX. I'm working with an iMac running OS X 10.2. I have installed several programs in a non-admin account (called "boys"), but they will not run from that account. The "get info" screen tells me that the "boys" account is the owner of the program. Read/write permission is enabled. When I try to run the programs, I get this error message: "The operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges." I have installed the same programs in an admin account, and the programs run just fine from that account. I'd like to get this working so that the boys in the "boys" account can actually use the system. I have "inherited" this system from prior users. Programs that were on the system when I got my hands on it do run -- for the most part -- from "boys."

Thanks for the reply, Ken. My various unsuccessful attempts to solve this problem led me to create a folder named "Programs." (I know, my PC roots are showing.) I did this for two reasons: 1) I hoped that this would give me more control over what was happening; and 2) I wanted to give the children with whom I am working an easy way to find the programs that I want them to use. When I use < cd /users/boys > and then do an ls- l, I see the Programs folder. An ls -l on that folder shows all the program I have loaded and indicates that the "x" permission is applied to owner, group and others. Moreover, I assumed (incorrectly, perhaps) that installing the programs using the "boys" non-admin account would make them the "owner" of the programs and that "x" permission would follow. Well, ls -l indicates that they are the owners and that they do have execute permission. I can only guess that the prior users of this system -- and nobody in this organization seems to know where they are -- did something that requires more than Advil to overcome.

Aliases remain tied forever to the account which created them. They cannot be moved to another account, converted to a full account, nor reinstated after being deleted.

  • Admin. name invalid on shutdown when another account is logged in

I have no problem logging in or shutting down with my administrator name and password--unless another account (someone else in my family) is also logged in. When I try to shut down from my account my user name is flagged as "invalid"--even though it is correct. I need log out, then go to the other open account and shut down from there. What gives?

I too was vexed with this exact problem. After hours of much hair-pulling and trial and error, I discovered that my other non-administrator user (who was logged in at the same time I was) had iChat set to automatically launch at his start-up. As soon as I turned off this option on his account, I was able to shut down without any password weirdness. So my advice is to see if you or any other user have applications set to launch at start-up, and then turn them all off.
    Hope this helps.

  • Any unintended consequences to separate admin & user accounts?

    Hi all,
I work on a single-user system, but I have wondered if there were any security advantages to having a separate admin and user accounts. I found an unrelated advantage - Parental Controls. Lacking self-discipline, I find myself working too late at night. Setting up Parental Controls might help me get more sleep, but this requires a separate admin account. I would need to create a separate account with admin privileges, then remove those privileges from my existing user account. Are there any unintended consequences to having one's user account not have administrator's capabilities? I do software development, but so far that is all in the user space, ie. application vs. drivers. Any unintended consequences to setting up Parental Controls on my user account?
    Thanks,
    Scott

You need at least one Admin account on the machine.
There is a security advantage running most tasks as "general user" on another account as the Applications and other folders/system can't be modified unless the Admin password is used. (in General user)
I run as General all the time, there is a slight hassle with installing programs into the Applications folder or moving things around in there, but it's worth it for the extra security and I don't do it too often.
Also Software Update won't run automatically neither. But it's best to wait for the others to go first sometimes and then proceed carefully.
However I don't know the effects with software development, your might be doing it in Admin space now and have no issue, but once you got to General you'll have to enter your password more often.
Try it and see how it goes, you can always go back to Admin.
Create another Admin account, log into it, change your Admin Account to General User and log out and into it.

  • Safari 5 seems to have slowed the OS for my Admin user account

After installing Safari 5 (now 5.0.2), and after a few Safari hangs and force quits, my OS for my Admin user account has become slow. Opening folders and seeing the contents is slow; moving small documents from folder to folder is very slow; cutting and pasting text in a MS Word document sometimes takes two or three tries, as the text highlighting cursor function has slowed. (Interestingly, Safari's basic click and pageload functions seem to work fairly normally, but with the same highlighting and copy/paste slowness that affects all other programs. Also, my mouse pointer moves quickly as per normal.)
However, I created a new user account as a test comparison and found that the new user account is NOT slow. It works perfectly fine.
Any thoughts on what I should do? Is my original Admin account corrupted? Is it possible to simply move my personal files (Word docs, iTunes songs, bookmarks) to the new user account and then delete my original Administrator account?
What should I do? Thanks everyone.

Well, it was worth a shot.
How full is your hard drive? Always a good starting point for diagnosing slowdowns.
Sometimes running periodic maintenance scripts helps, because it cleans some caches that a Safari reset won't. The scripts are supposed to run automatically in the wee hours of the morning when most people are computing, but the problem is that they only run if the computer is on and not sleeping. Not too realistic.
This article in an excellent series of "keep the Apple sweet" articles talks about the scripts and how to run them manually:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
They are less important in later incarnations of Mac OSX as some o the tasks they do were shifted to start-up, but doing them is worth trying.
Also use Activity Monitor to check for a runaway background process. It's possible that this could affect only one user account. If you've not used Activity Monitor before, make sure you change its "Show" option from the default of "My Processes" to "All Processes" or you might miss some nasty troublemakers. Also click in the "%CPU" column header to sort by processor usage. With no user apps running, (basically an idling computer) no single process should demand more than ~5 percent of the processor. Let AM display for a few minutes while you watch it, as some processes toggle back and forth as they activate.
Running any anti-virus software? Most does more Mac-harm than Mac-good.
    Keep us posted!

  • Duplicated user admins

    Hi
I'm trying to help someone sort out their user file permissions.
They originally dragged over a load of files created in Tiger onto their new Intel imac running Leopard, and in the process appear to have duplicated their admin user for file sharing permissions.
A typical file "get info" shows
xxxx (me) - read & write
    xxxx (me) - no access
    staff - no access
    everyone - no access
where the xxxx are identical names and single users.
Clicking on the padlock and entering the admin password does not then allow the bottom three users to be amended or deleted. In accounts system preferences there is only one user.
How do we get back to one admin user in permissions?

are these files in the home directory somewhere? make a new folder somewhere in the home directory and put them all in there. go to the info panel for that folder, unlock the lock at the bottom, click on the "gears" button next to +- and select "apply to enclosed items".
WARNING: NEVER EVER under any circumstances use "apply to enclosed items" on any system created folders. that includes your home directory, your desktop folder, the entire hard drive, Applications folder etc. use it ONLY on folders you create yourself.
