Deleting A source / file

On the side bar under the sources there are several folders categorized by year (ie. 2004, 2005, etc. ) All our photos are located in the 2007 file. How in the world do I delete these other files? They contain no photos, I press delete and it makes the error noise, I cannot drag it to the trash. Can I get rid of these?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No you can't get rid of these. They are Smart Albums hardwired into version 6. You can click on the wee triangle to the left of the word Library and they won't be visible anymore.

Sender File adapter not deleting the source file after reading

Hi everyone,
In the sender Communication channel i have choosen the "Delete" option after reading the source file. But it is reading the file, but it is not deleting the file. I have checked the file status. it is with full persmission.
can anyone give solution to this.

Hi,
1. set the mode to delete
2. make sure the file is "deletable"
3. check xiserver:port/MessagingSystem/monitor log to see what happens with the file
(chec both audit and log in that link)

How can i relink files to the timeline sequence when i've deleted the source file path? All the attribute are still in the timeline, I just can't relink

So i started an edit and had the whole thing finished and ready to export in Final Cut X, when i went to export I had a message pop up say that it couldn't export while FCP X is still referencing media. I went through trying to solve the problem and ended up deleting the source media folders in the Final Cut Events folder and reimporting the clips. This lead to a whole can of worms opening up and now i'm left with a whole edit with 90% of the clips in the timeline unable to relink to source media.
Can anyone help?

First find the files. Then File>Relink Event Files and point to the folder.

Deleting Updates source files

I am in the process of changing the Software update groups and Deployment packages. I am removing all the old Groups and packages, however I noticed that despite deleting the group and the package, the source files are still on the HDD. Is
there a process I need to go through to delete these? Since the Group and packages have been deleted, can I just delete the folder? I want to Create a new Deployment package, and re-download the updates, but I don't want to have the update residing
on the HDD in two places.

(Package) source files will not be deleted automatically - so you have to remove them manually (or scripted).

AME deleted my source files...

After fixing some problems with a compilation of videos I have I sent the corrected files to Encoder to export them.
After an obnoxious goat sound encouder force quit itself and my original source files are gone, not in the trash not even in .PRV folder and when I open the project up it says my media is offline and can not be located.
The files quite literally evaporated. Unfortuanley these WERE my back up files an now all of my work is gone.
I need to figure out why AME shut itself down and what the hell happened to my files.

Were you using Watch folders at all? If not, can you please give us the exact steps you took to queue the files (ie. were you queuing them directly from PPro, dragging and dropping them to AME, importing your sequences directly in AME)
I have yet to run in to a case where AME removes source files from the system. Let's see if we can't get to the bottom of where things went sideways.

Want to delete the source file from the ext Hard drive using iphoto11

I am testing using the external hard drive and turn off "copy items to the iphoto library", I put the iphoto library remain in the osx system disk. In case I forget to turn on the HD, iphoto still work.
But the problem that I have is that I have no way to delete the file that I do not want, within iphoto event, they are deleted, but the real thing is still in the folder of my ext HD.
Is there any better way to manage this, I have 500G of photos from another HD that I want to move into iphoto to manage it, but if I cannot has a easy way to delete the unwanted photos, I have no way to use it.
if I turn on "copy items to the iphoto library, would the library be as big as 300-500G, my macbook only has a HD of 60G only, what is the best way to do this?
any suggestion welcome.

You have choosen to use a referenced library by choosing to uncheck the "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" - This is strongly not recommended as it makes importing more difficult, deleting more difficult as you are finding and replacing defective hardware or upgrading much harder - what you are seeing is that deleting is now a two step process - that is wha you have choosen - iPhoto only acts on the photos inside it's library - you have choosen to take care of the originals outside of the iPhoto library and you also have choosen to never change their path
If you are looking ot save space on yoru internal drive a much better way is to move your iPhoto library to the external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
This of cousre will break the path to the photos that you have imported while this option was unchecked

PDF deletes source file

In some instances when creating a PDF from an original TIF file, the TIF file is deleted. I would like to retain the source file. Is this a setting? I am using Acrobat 9 Pro.

How are you creating the PDF? What OS? It is not typical for Acrobat to delete the source file in such cases.

Self-contained movie asking for source files

I have exported a final cut pro movie as a self-contained file, and after I deleted the source files, as my harddrive was jammed full, I am unable to burn the project onto a dvd. The file won't open in quicktime or final cut pro. It keeps asking for a source file to continue - HELP! It was a two hour movie that I am to be burning for XMas, and it has slipped out of my computer apparently. It was opening on its own without my harddrive connected before I deleted the source files, so I KNOW it was self-contained which is the only reason I deleted the files in the first place! Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is not a new problem. I have encountered it through many versions of QuickTime.
Typically, it happens after I assemble a compilation of clips from various sources, including imported Windows Media files. I diligently check the "Save as a self-contained movie" option, which always indicates a file size larger than the "Save as reference movie" option -- for example, 1.7 MB vs. only 9.2 KB for a short clip. And yet, if I have discarded the original clip, QuickTime is unable to play some of the supposedly self-contained movies because it can't find the deleted source files. It's kind of maddening, especially when there's no way to recover the original clips.
I haven't tracked this, but I suspect it might happen when a clip in one format is pasted into a movie without first converting it to QuickTime. Has anyone else noticed this possibility and tested it?

1 source file on external drive - but duplicates of files in iTunes - help!

I recently moved all my music to an external HD and followed mac's intructions for the transfer w/o any probs. However, the HD died (dropped it) and everything was lost on the HD.
To solve this, I used a program called "Pod to Mac" in an effort to recover all my files (about 35 GB) from my iPod. Worked very well. All files are now back on a new external HD.
The issue I've encountered is that in iTunes, I now have two versions of each song. Both versions in iTunes refer to a single source file in my external HD ... so if I delete one file in iTunes, I delete the source file for the second copy of this file in iTunes, too.
This isn't a big problem, except iTunes now thinks that I have 70 GB worth of music (ie, 2 times 35 GB; even though I really only have 35 GB of music), which means I don't have enough memory in my iPod to sync all 70 GB.
How can I delete one version of the file in iTunes w/o messing with the source file on my external HD?

You'll have to try to repair the drive on a PC.
How is it possible that iTunes can read the files?
Some things will still be readable when corruption occurs, the big problem is when writing occurs when there's corruption.

Deleting Original Video File

Once you import a video file into Encore and transcode it can you delete the original file and still build properly or will that cause a problem? I do understand that you will not be able to revert to original if you do this.

In theory it should, in practice it isn't, unfortunately. If at all, you should only delete the source files after you have successfully built/compiled the entire project. Just transcoding is not enough to correctly update the project and states of the assets. There's no guarantees, though, so in all fairness, if you're tight on space, simply getting yet another hardrive and keeping the sources around would be better.

After converting a song, would it cause any harm to iTunes or my iPod if I were to delete the source file?

As long as you keep the convereted file in itunes there should be no problem deleting the source file.

CS4 Encoder can't find source file

Hello - I recently deleted a number of temporary files on my C: drive in order to free up space. I then tried to export from CS4 to Encoder and it now says that it can't find the source file. I have tried sending the exported file to a number of locations and I get the same response.
I've noticed some people on other threads having a source problem with Encoder. Mine definitely started after I deleted some files (although I don't remember seeing anything that had an Adobe tag on it). Before this, it worked perfectly. I'm hoping to avoid a re-intstall. Thanks, Jeff. I reopened CS4 and tried to export media again. I'm exporting media to my V: drive, basically my dedicated video media drive. It still can't find the source. I also tried to shift the media cache drives over to the V: drive, as this has the most memory on the computer. I guess I'm partly confused as to why it says that the source is on the C: temp drive, when I'm telling it to export somewhere else.

Cluster Live Storage Migration completes without deleting the source virtual hard disk VHDX

Testing HV setup in a cluster of two nodes with shared FC storage. Storage is CSV on both nodes. Storage migration of a VM from C:\ClusterStorage\A to C:\ClusterStorage\B completes without any problem. Upon completion, the source VHDX
are still left at C:\ClusterStorage\A. The source files can be deleted manually. All is done through VMM "Migrate Storage" option. Why the storage migration does not delete the source files upon job completion? Thanks!

I have noticed this happens when the folders are "pre-staged". If I create a folder and then storage migrate all of the files into it then it will not delete from it. If I just put the files in the root of the CSV then it seems to work. I am
looking into the permissions of the system and seeing what changes on a folder when it is created by a user and not the system. This only appears to happen when I am doing some cleanup because of duplicate machine name subfolders recently that a tech created.
If you match the permissions to a system created VM it should work though.
