Deleting a Time Capsule Sparse Bundle in OS 10.7.5

How can I delete a sparse bundle representing one of 4 backups on a 1 TB Time Capsule backing up 4 computers? All Macs. The sparse bundle I need to delete without affecting the other 3 computers is the largest on the Time Capsule and is corrupted to the point it needs to be eliminated entirely so
I can start an entirely new backup process for that computer using Time Machine on the Time Capsule. I am trying to delete by trashing "Bands" but
there are 57,000 bands in the sparse bundle and they either delete slowly or the delete process freezes requiring a computer reboot. This is a new iMac 27
using Mac OS 10.7.5. Pondini makes the deletion process look long but admits it is tedious. It doesn't say what to do if deletion fails and the sparse bundle
will not mount. My Time Machine for this computer is totally worthless and must be rebooted so I can start a new one. Help

There is a bug that is killing spotlight and TM in latest Lion update.. 10.7.5
Try turning this off and see what happens.

Otherwise copy the sparsebundles of the other computers to a usb drive or do an archive to USB drive.. although the corruption of the sparsebundle might cause that to fail.
You can just copy them to USB drive plugged into your computer.. then erase the TC and copy them back.. painful.. yes, Tme consuming.. absolutely.. but that is the only way to fix it if the TC goes nuts and you really want to keep those other backups..
Aint Apple just great how they test their updates so throughly.

  • Time capsule sparse bundle reading "temporarily unavailable" and Time Machine files are not in order; what can I do to check on my backup systems?

I have my time machine set-up with my time capsule/airport.  I cannot open my backups in the time capsule as it reads "spars bundle temporarily unavailable."  Also, my time machine backup files are missing some files and not in oder by name as designed.  It seems something is is not working.  I have don a disk repair on the time capsule.  I have closed and reopened my computer.  Still unable to open time capsule.  Does anyone know where else I need to check for errors?

There are two key but related bugs in Yosemite..
The big one IMHO at least is the network one.. and the secondary one is TM which is itself unreliable.
To fix the Network ones we have a long list of things to do.. but you do apparently have access to the TC so for now that is not the major one.
However some of your statements mean I am a bit lost on what you have done.
I cannot open my backups in the time capsule as it reads "spars bundle temporarily unavailable."
If you cannot open your backups how can you find that the backup files are missing. The files are missing from the sparsebundle which you cannot open??
my time machine backup files are missing some files
You cannot repair the disk of the Time Capsule.. only the Sparsebundle can be checked.. that means that you have accessed it and mounted it for disk utility to check it.
I have don a disk repair on the time capsule.
So I am confused about the comments.
What I would recommend is the standard set of fixes to Yosemite.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.

Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
That is all to cover the network side of things.
Time Machine issue is a harder one because there is no simple work around I can give you.
My recommendations are to stop using a TC and test TM to an external hard disk plugged into the computer.. Do a whole new backup and see if that is fully working and accessible.
Or change over to third party program for backup.. I do recommend Carbon Copy Cloner as I use it personally but SuperDuper has a good reputation and there are others. It is far easier and quicker to test a bootable clone made with CCC as you simply boot from the backup.

  • Can I you use an older Time Capsule sparse bundle?

How do I tell Time Capsule to use and older existing sparse bundle for future backups?

Just to point out .. TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router. It knows nothing.. !
All the smarts are in Time Machine in the computer.
It simply may not be possible to use an old TM backup.

IF.... .no other backups have occured since you deleted the file, you might be able to retrieve it using an application like Disk Warrior. It's about $100 as I recall, and there are no guarantees that it will work.
DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac  Disk Repair, Mac Directory ...
Any of the free or low priced utilities that you might see or try will not be able to retrieve a deleted file from a Time Capsule.
If any backups have occured since you deleted the file, the deleted file has almost certainly been overwritten. No way to retrieve it in that case.

  • How to Restore Data Deleted  from Time Capsule Hard Drive

This question is more about the time capsule in general as opposed to a specific time machine issue.
I'm using my time capsule as an external hard drive that I can access wirelessly and I have accidentally deleted a folder. It didn't go into the trash can on the computer I used to delete the file from my TC, it just disappeared. I have data recovery software (Data Rescue III) but it is unable to locate the TC since it is not a plugged in device. I've tried connecting my computer to the TC via wireless, ethernet, and usb but Data Rescue still won't detect the TC.
How can I get the files back? Is there a way to restore files deleted from the TC when it's being used as a hard drive (not as a time machine for backups)?
    THANKS!!!

There is only one USB port on the back of the Time Capsule, and AFAICT from reading Apple's documentation, the only uses for that port are to connect an external hard drive or printer. You could try connecting that port to your Mac directly via USB cable, but nothing I can find indicates it would work, and you would be solely responsible if it somehow damaged either device (which may or may not even be a possible side effect).
Unfortunately, if connecting the Mac to the Time Capsule via USB does not work, you're probably out of luck. Unless you are willing to crack open the Time Capsule, remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure so you can access it with Data Rescue, your data will remain lost. Note for the future that you absolutely *should not ever* keep original, un-backed-up data on a backup drive. It's poor organization and dangerous to boot.

  • HT4522 I would like to delete some time capsule files that I erased from my mac. Please and thanks

Please help me deleting some files that are in my time capsule which I have erased from my computer
    thank you

Since you deleted the files on your Mac, Time Machine will eventually delete them automatically from the Time Capsule, so you really need do nothing.
If you really do want to delete the files right now, open Time Machine, wait for it to load and use the timeline on the right side of the window to go back to a date when the files were still on your Mac.
Use the Finder like interface to navigate to the specific file that you want to delete and click on it to highlight it
Click the gear icon at the top of Time Machine window and click "Delete all backups of  xxxxxxxx"
Do the same for other files that you want to delete.
Click Cancel at the lower left of the window to return to your normal desktop

  • Cannot change case-sensitivity of Time Machine sparse bundle (10.7.2)

Hi everyone, I'm trying to follow this excellent guide to Time Machine backups:
    http://pondini.org/TM/A8.html
The site suggests that I make my TM backup case INsensitive, so after the network sparse bundle has been initially created on my Lion 10.7.2 TM backup, I cancelled the backup, then opened up the sparse bundle in Disk Utility as per the instructions provided.
I double clicked the sparse bundle to open the Time Machine Backups volume, and then in the Erase tab I changed the format from Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then I clicked on "Erase" but it returned an error and said it could not do it. Sorry I don't have the exact error message on hand at the moment but it happened again with the same error message when I tried again.
Steps 6-8 in the guide tell me to Get Info on the Time Machine Backups volume and "Ignore ownership on this volume". However when I open the Info for the volume "Ignore ownership on this volume" is not there at all in the options? I've opened up every section of the Get Info window but it's definitely not present.
Has something changed in 10.7 Lion or is there another reason I'm getting this problem? The HDD is connected as an AirDisk on an AirPort Extreme Base Station (yes I realise this is an unsupported/not recommended Time Machine solution). I haven't yet tried directly plugging the drive in via USB which will be my next step when I regain access to my computer later.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.

You say your "backups still turn up corrupted now and then" - how do you know? Is it only when you try to access them that you will know this?
Sometimes a backup will fail, sometimes you can't access them, sometimes you'll get this message:
See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.
And by this stage is it too late to recover anything?
Sometimes.    Sometimes they can be repaired by Disk Utility.  Sometimes only a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app like DiskWarrior ($100) can fix them.  Sometimes nothing can.  Sometimes you can restore some individual items, sometimes not.  Sometimes you can do a full system restore from some backups, other times not.
does it help that I am using a Gigabit WIRED connection between iMac - 10/100/1000 switch - Airport Extreme Base Station?
Probably -- you won't have WIFI interference.
But if you have an iMac, why not just connect the external HD directly to your Mac?  That's much faster and more reliable (and supported).
You'd need to erase the disk in that case, since Time Machine won't bother with a sparse bundle at all on a direct backup.  Just format the disk as GUID, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and let 'er rip!

  • How to delete the time capsule default network?

I delete, but always return. Is this network secure? What the use for? Need password? I use Time Capsule as a regular HD, not Time Machine.
    thanks

The "default" in your screenshot is likely the name of another wireless network near you...unless you also have another router with a network named "default".
If you can convince the owner of the other device to turn off his wireless router, you will not see "default" any longer.
All of the default networks for Apple products have a name like +Apple Network xxxxxx+, so this is not a wireless signal that is coming from your Time Capsule.

  • Time machine sparse bundle removed files from bands

    Hi,
I have had backup on Time Capsule which I wanted to delete because I bought new fast HDD for backups using thunderbolt so I tried to manualy remove files from sparsebundle package > bands directory.. as this was very slow action and mostly it hanged I left it... after some time I was about to restore iPad 2 but could not find older backup so I remembered that I had Time Machine backup on Time Capsule somewhere in shelf so I tried to mount it and get old iPad backups from it but "no mountable file systems" error appeared.
Is there any way how I could get one directory from this corrupted sparsebundle? I tried some steps from google attaching it as a device and running fsck_hfs -rf but it ended with errors.
I hope you guys have some solution to save my valuable data!

    CyKi wrote:

That corrupted it beyond repair.    Your data (including the file system directory, catalogs, etc.), was spread over those band files.
I tried to mount it and get old iPad backups from it but "no mountable file systems" error appeared.
Nope.  OSX can't tell what it is.  The bands you deleted probably contained the directory.

  • Can I recover photos I deleted with time capsule?

    Hi,
I am trying to recover 1 year full of photos (aprox 10,000) from my macbook pro. the memory is almost running out of my hard drive and when this happened around last year I did a backup of my entire computer with an WD external HS, and thought I had saved them. Now I cannot find my old photos on the external HD. I do not know the path to the photos and it is not easy to find them by looking at backups through path names. They were on the original path of the default iPhoto library. From the library, I can only see a few photos, which are not the originals I loaded.
    Questions:
    1. Since I cannot find them on the HD (which is 3/4 full now) I wonder if I could recover them by using time capsute?
    2. I would also like to know if I use time capusule, and recover those files, do I loose the new ones?
    3. What is the path to identify where photos are in iPhoto?
    4. How do I only retrieve photos from the HD, I find it impossible to do this the way the data has been saved. I am trying to group all photos into anther HD.
    Thanks,
    Helene

How was the backup to Time Capsule done?
If done with Time Machine, you do realize that files backed up by Time Machine are not kept forever.
How full is the drive on Time Capsule?
1, The iPhoto library is usually kept in ~/Piucture/iPhoto Library which is a database. It is usually recommeded that you don't access this directly but use iPhoto.
2, I would copy iPhoto Library to another place just in case.
3, ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library unless you moved it some place else instead.
4, The directions to move the iPhoto library are in this article

  • Delete old time capsule content?

I've replaced my old time capsule with a new 802-11AC model and would like to scrub the drive on the old TC.
It is no longer in use or connected to the wireless network.
    Thanks for your help

You will have to get the old Time Capsule connected to your Mac.
The easiest way to do this would be to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from the Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the old TC.
Open AirPort Utility, click on the old TC and click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window
    Click Erase Disk
If you plan to keep the TC, then use the Quick Erase option, which will only take a minute.
If you plan to move the TC to another person, select the Zero Out option, which will likely take 4-5 hours or more.
If you want to erase the old network settings on the old TC, click the Base Station menu at the very top of the screen up near File, Help, etc
    Click Restore Default Settings
Now the old TC has factory default settings and the hard drive is blank. Disconnect the Ethernet cable that you used for the operations.

  • Time Machine ,,,,,sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)

Time Machine on my iMac (2.66 i5) is failing with the message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The backup image "/Volumes/Time Machine/Shaggylane iMac.sparsbundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
This error appears when the backup is started......it spends a bit of time "Looking for backup drive", then displays the message.
The directory "/Volumes/Time Machine" has the following permissions:
drwx------  13 root        wheel    398 24 Aug 13:15 Time Machine
I was able to login as root and go into that directory.  I didn't see any broken links or anything that stood out.
I was also able to go into Time Machine from the desktop and flip through the backup history.  It seemed to be responding normally.
Time Machine has been working fine for 2+ years.  I suspect it got buggered-up when I accidentally rebooted while it was doing a backup October 12th.  Lion was installed in the spring.  On the 12th, I installed a Lion patch bringing it up to 10.7.2.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Doug

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.
