Deleting a user account question

Hi everyone, can anyone tell me the best way to delete a user account on my computer? Basically I no longer need two accounts and the music, movies and other information from the other side have been transferred to another computer. What I need to know if should I delete all the files from the user account before deleting the account or will deleting the account automatically delete all those files?
My main concern is freeing up space on the computer again and want to be sure the way I do it will do the job. Thanks for any help.

You don't need to do anything beforehand. After following Macjack's instructions you will be presented with this option screen, and can choose accordingly:

How do I delete a user account I am not using to regain the space on the HD?

System Preferences - Accounts - choose account in the left panel and click the "-" button to delete. You'll want to choose "Delete immediately" to save the space (the "Save in disk image" option will keep the files in an image in your Users folder, which saves you no space).

What are you asking? Where music is stored or where the user accounts were stored?
Music should be in the music folder - perhaps inside of an iTunes folder.
User accounts should be on the home directory.

  • Can't delete old user accounts from iBook (G3 - Darwin 6.8)

    Hello,
I'm having a pain of a time trying to remove the old user accounts on this iBook I was given. The accounts page in the system settings is unlocked, I click on an accountm, the click on Delete User, it works for a while, and then when it is finished 'deleting' the user account is still there, nothing has been deleted. I've try a dozen times now. I'm stumped. Can't find anything on the internet that will help.
    Thanks,
    David.

So far, I've not had this kind of issue; but did find a few directions to check to see how to go about removing user accounts... or renaming them, etc. One of the recent discussions I've read through (three pages) had some ideas that could work.
Outside of booting the OS X computer into a super-user account where you can delete Admin users, etc and probably if not familiar with unix, do some incredible damages too; I'd try other exercises first as I am timid. What version of OS X is running in your vintage computer?
In the process of 'Change Name on Home Folder' some revealing ideas came across; some may transfer...

And some ideas that could be used to another end, may be found here...

However, there are no warrantees expressed or implied. Always a fine idea to read and sort information since some of the ideas available only allow you do perform the practice once correctly. Or wish you had.

i need to delete my user account

If you mean your iTunes account then you can't currently delete them, all you can do is remove any personal info from it and stop using it - but any content that you downloaded or bought with it will remain tied to it, so if you ever want to re-download it or authorise it on a new computer then you will need to remember its id and password

  • How long should it reasonably take to delete a User Account?

Just got a new 27" iMac.  I made the mistake of setting myself up as a user prior to migrating from my olde Mac G5 (Tiger).  When I did migrate, I realized it set up a new user with the migrated info.  Went ahead and kept that user and deleted the one I had created.  Problem is it has been "deleting" my user account for close to 6 hours.  Is this reasonable, or do I have a problem going on?  User screen in System Preferences just keeps saying deleting user.  Won't let me quit System Preferences or Restart.
    Thanks.

I decided to let it run overnight.  Checked it this morning and it was complete.  Go figure...
Not sure what the process of deleting a user account involves, but it sure took a long time, something more than 7 hours.  I definitely don't want to have to do that again!
Thanks for the response, I was going to go that route if it wasn't complete this morning.

  • I am trying to delete a user account but attempt locks up system prefs

I have been trying to delete a user account in 10.9.1 (Mavericks) on a 2009 Mac Pro. The problem is that System Prefs never completes the "archive account" and when check which processes are using up CPU time I find that writeprefs is pegged at 100% and has stayed at that level for seven hours plus. Of course the account is never removed and the only way of restarting the machine is to force quit system prefs after which the reboot works. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Do you really need to archive the user folder?
linc, that would be desirable but not absolutely essential.  And, thank you for your swift response!

  • What does deleting a user account do?

What does deleting a user account actually do? If the account that is being deleted is the one from which many programs have been installed, does deleting the account delete the software too?

It instantly deletes everything to do with that account.
But programs can be installed for all users or just one user.
There is an Applications folder at root, then possibly another one for each user, if the Apps aren't at root, then they'll be gone deleting the user that installed them for only that user.

  • Deleting a user account? or making second account the primary account??

Hi, a few days ago i bought a new 24" imac & used the migration assistant to transfer all my stuff over from my 17" intel imac running 10.4.10.
I did this AFTER i setup the 24"imac with a user account. I was hoping i could make my old account the default account on the new imac. I have set it up so when it logs on it logs into my old imac account, & have gone through & set all the permissions so i can do what ever i want. I have also set the transferred account as an administrative account.
So here is my question - can i delete the original account that was setup on my new 24" & keep the transferred account as the main account?
It doesnt really hurt to have 2 accounts there but i am the only user for this computer & would like to have it alittle simpler...
    thanks

is this ok to do? remembering the transferred account came from a imac running 10.4.10 & the new machine is 10.5.4.
will there be any library or system issues?? is it really as straight forward as deleting the account?? Remember the account i want to delete is the account i set up when i booted this computer for the first time...

  • Delete ancient user account

I upgraded to Yosemite and the login screen shows several "ghost" accounts that I thought that I had deleted years ago.  One of these I understand is for iCloud but how do I delete these ancient accounts for users that no longer exist.  If I look in the users folder these ghost accounts are not there.  How do I get rid of them from the log in screen?  The person with a similar question had no replies.

Only carry on if you have made a backup this instant!
You better check back if you don't understand before doing anything.
    In Terminal.app:
    dscl . list /users
find your ghost users in this list
You can delete a user by doing this:
    sudo dscl . delete /users/NAME_FROM_LIST_ABOVE

  • CD/DVD Icon and User Account question

I'm a noob with an iBook G3 and have a couple questions, since I just purchased it used and managed to get it up and running.
Firstly, how does one open the CD/DVD player tray? There's no icon on the desktop or options I can find to add one. I did check to make sure the settings were set to display all drives and it does show in the System Info under ATA. So far, the only solution I've found is using the paper clip method and would rather have options.
Secondly, the person who had it previous has a user account, and I was wondering how to remove/reset to make it my own. I have the OS X install CD as well as the OS 9 install disks. Obviously, question one will likely help with question two. Thanks!

    You really need the disc.
You can go to System Preferences > Accounts and set up a new account, being sure to give it Administrative privileges. Log out and log in as the new user. Then you can delete the other account.
The original owner should have given you the Tiger Install disc(s) as part of the deal or should have erased Tiger off the hard drive and reinstalled the version for which you have the Install CD.

  • Restore deleted AD User Account in Windows Server 2012

    Good day.
I know Windows Server 2012 has an Active Directory Recycle Bin feature, however upon enabling the feature it doesn't display the deleted user account I have deleted prior to enabling the feature. Is this normal? Does the feature only displays deleted AD
objects after you have enabled it? Is there other way to display those objects? Thanks in advance.

    Hi James,
Yes, You should have a valid system state back to perform an authoritative restore.
In case you don’t have any system state backup, you can use ADRestore to restore tombstoned objects. When an object is deleted from Active Directory, it isn't actually removed but is instead marked as deleted by an internal marker called
    a tombstone.
Note: ADRestore cannot restore the group membership for a user. Meanwhile, not all attribute data can be restored.

No he can _not_, as there is no tombstones when the recycle-bin is enabled, recycled objects can not be restored/reanimated.
