Deleting aliases

I want to delete an alias email address which was created in mobile me. It appears when I invite attendees in iCal. The alias is not recorded in my iCloud mail preferences. Where is it?

Right you are. I did this a couple years ago, and I wasn't sure if the term 'symbolic link' was accurate technically or even applicable to the OS10.5. I set it up to move my documents, pictures, movies and music on to a different partition of my hard disk and then made the links so I could access them 'normally' through my home folder.
Anyway, when I transferred everything to my new Macbook I decided to forgo the partitioning thing, but after the automatic data transfer of course the actual documents, pictures, movies and music folders did not get created...just the links were copied over and naturally they were dead-ends on the new system.
I have temporarily moved the dead-end links into a new folder to get them out of the way. And I copied the documents, pictures, movies and music folders from my old partition directly into my home folder on my new system. Seems to be working fine regarding my data being recognized by applications (iTunes,iPhoto, etc). So, now I figure it would be a good idea to clean things up by erasing the the links. Maybe I will use sudo rm to delete them to be on the safe side.
Thanks a bunch for your help. If you have any other comments based on the info in my rely here, please feel free to send it along. ^_^

  • Can't Delete Aliases/Can't Drag and Drop

For the past few days I have been trying to delete aliases and .webarchive files and I can't drag and drop them into the recycling bin. What do I do?

when you have your device plugged and you can browser it with Windows Explorer,
delete all bbthumb.dat files in the Music\ folder.
then unplug, and open the media application. And wait.

I have deleted aliases twice, but they are there the next time I log on. What am I doing wrong?

Obviously my previous post in this old thread is no longer relevant. Several posters have complained of the problem you are experiencing, and probably only Support can solve it.
To contact  Support: if you currently happen to have AppleCare, either because you recently bought Apple hardware or have paid to extend the inititial period, you can contact them here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
You will need the serial number of the covered hardware.
If you are not covered by AppleCare, then - in common with other free email services - there is no free support and you may be asked to pay a fee. You should argue that this is their problem and you should not be charged.

  • In iPhoto '11, is it safe to delete aliases in the masters folder?

I'm running the latest update of iPhoto '11.
I'm trying to do some house cleaning and I'm discovering many duplicates of photos because I used to have iphoto copy pictures into the library.
So, I'm getting rid of duplicates, and I keep coming across these folders which have aliases to the original picture (not in the library).
I've noticed that some of these aliases are pointing to pictures that are no longer there (i.e. I deleted them a long time ago).  So I was wondering if it's safe to delete the aliases.
I've noticed that any photos added in '11 dont actually have aliases.  Only the photos added in prior versions.
On a similar note, if it's not safe to delete the aliases, then if I did delete them, would they be recreated somehow? (like, if i rebuild the library database by pressing "command" and "option" on iphoto launch....or something).
Just curious so I can continue my house cleaning.
    Thanks in advance.

It's impossible to say whether it's safe to delete those aliases or not. What you're doing is simply not supported.
There are two possible uses for aliases in an 11 Library. One is linking up the old Library to the new structure. The other is to track referenced files. So, good luck with that.
I'm sure you've thought this decision through but for the benefit of others who may be thinking of this:
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Delete aliases in Mail

The list of aliases that is shown from the drop-down list when sending a mail in Mail is not equal to my current set of aliases set via .Mac. Instead, it is a historical list of all the aliases I've ever had. I wonder if there's a way to update Mail so its set of aliases corresponds to the one that are currently in use?

Nope, didn't work.  The problem is that I created a new catagory that I put a template in and now when I go to that catagory and try and delete the template it won't do it.  Its unlike the standard catagories that came with ML.  Its one I created.  I also cannot delete the catagory I created either.

  • Deleting Aliases from your trash

Some how I have 2 aliases files in my trash, I've been trying for days to either move them out to the desktop and to delete. I've just read that you have to put only one in at a time...can someone help me delete these files.?.

In order for you to get a Mac virus..
First, somebody would have to write one. No real virus exists for Macs in the wild.
You would then have to download an installer file or application. I assume your IM wouldn't do this automatically, and if it does I would disable that setting.
You would have to deliberately click on the application to run it, and probably also have to click "yes" to a question asking you if you really want to run an unknown application.
Your existing virus software would have to be lousy if it then let one pass.
There are a few non-virus malware items out there that are undesirable on a Mac but you would again have to take deliberate steps to actually get it working on your computer.

  • How do I delete Aliases in Launchpad?

I have successfully installed WD MyBook external hard drive & backed up using Time Machine. I have stupidly dragged the MyBook icon from the desktop into Launchpad. I now have about a hundred aliases in Launchpad. How do I get rid of them? I have tried to drag them into Trash, but they keep coming back. Help!

    Open Terminal and type:
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps; \

  • HT4897 Deleting email aliases

How do I delete Aliasa email names/addresses?

Are you sure you are DELETING it, or just TURNING OFF the alias?
You can turn-off aliases temporarily (so emails coming to that alias will then bounce back to sender), and then turn it back on again in the future.
I read something about this in the Help on iCloud, so suggest you give it a read... ;-)

  • Can I use an iCloud email address that's been deleted from another account?

There was one house account, mine, which is an old @mac.com address from way back in the iTools days.
I made a couple email aliases for my daughter when she was younger to use for school.
Now, she has her own iPhone.  I gave her another email address (hername @ att . net) so we could register her own Apple ID, and get the confirmation/activation email.
    With me so far?
So now, in order to use the Apple bells & whistles, you need an iCloud email.  When I try to create one, it says that both the @icloud.com addresses I tried are already in use.  (Trust me, they're unique to us.)
I made sure to delete the aliases from my main account, but I still can't use them.
My question is:  How long will it take to release those deleted aliases for use again?  If at all.
Off topic:  What happened to our old Support Communities login ID?  I had to use my Apple ID and now I look like a first-timer.  Is there a way to merge the old account into this one?

I don't think that's possible.  As mentioned here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mm6b1a490a, "Aliases are not transferable. Only the iCloud account that created the alias can use it.  Once you create an alias it cannot be made into its own account."
Not sure about your second question.  You might want to post it over in the Using Apple Support Communities forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities?view=dis cussions.

  • Maxl  script for delete alias

    Hi All,
wen im loading the all the dimensions we have to delete all alises and reload all the dimensions
How can i delete alias for every load using maxl or any thing else
    Thanks

    Dear user98631,
I was going to refer you to this link: Re: HOW can i delete the members in dim using MAXL but I find that you are one and the same as the OP of that thread so you've already got the gen on what MaxL can and cannot do.
So, briefly, there is no MaxL command to delete aliases.
What you could do is create a dimension load rule that load blanks to aliases. This would require a rebuild of each dimension that you wanted to impact.
    I'm a little confused, though.
    You wrote:

How can i delete alias for every load using maxl or any thing else Do you want to delete the aliases from existing dimensions, or delete all of the dimensions and rebuild them from scratch?
If you want to do the latter, the previous thread linked above ought to do it. If you don't want aliases, just ignore the column with the aliases in your build table/file.
    Does this answer your question?

  • Family pack aliases not merged into icloud?

My Mobile Me family pack sub mail address is updated to icloud but I did notice sub address aliases are not merged into icloud. They are still mobile me accounts in Mail. How to merge them into icloud so I could use icloud.com too? Or will Apple delete aliases still under MM some times?

  • I want my aliases back. How can I do that?

I had two aliases that I removed several months ago. I want to use them again and I sent an email to these addresses. The system returned the email with a fatal error:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
    <[email protected]>
(reason: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected])
    (expanded from: <[email protected]>)
How can I get my aliases back?
    Thanks.

Unfortunately from what I have read I don't think you can get deleted aliases back. I believe the only way to revive it is as a full-blown .Mac account or .Mac email account.

  • Previous sharepoints appear as unremovable aliases.  Please Help!

I'm working with my IT admin to resolve this problem and we are stumped. We recently installed a mac mini server with 10.6. After having some trouble, Apple support suggested we not use Server Preferences and stick to the Server Admin application, so we are still working within that. We are trying to set up FTP access for certain folders.
The problem is, when we move or delete a folder that was set as a share point, the change is reflected for someone who logs in via ftp, but an alias to the old folder location is created. The alias does not appear in the server's finder browsing, or within the server admin app. The FTP user cannot delete or modify the alias.
The same happens when we unshare a folder. Also when we unshare a folder and browse to the folder through finder on the server, and hit get info, it is still showing up as shared to all the users that previously had access.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

MacOSX Server creates aliases of shared folders in the FTPRoot folder.
(by default located at Server HD/Library/FTPServer/FTProot).
Delete aliases of unshared folders. Restart ftp service.

  • I cannot erase alias JPeg images on a memory card so that it will not accept any more which I try to load onto it, yet there are no actual images available if I click on any of them. The error message states that one or more cannot

Cannot delete aliases for JPeg images on a lumix camera memory card even selecting individual images anjd trying to move to trash -error35 one or more items cannot be found. No image available on clicking or if card put back into camera-"no images to disply" Yet if try to add more images, message that card is full! Any suggestions?

Deleting from iPhoto or image capture after import should be fine and shouldn't cause any issues. Deleting from the folder view of finder, can cause issues as the camera can the image is still there. You can try emptying the trash on your mac if you deleted them via the finder, as although you've deleted it, it's only marked as trashed and not actually deleted until you empty the trash - ie it won't relieve the space taken by the files.
If your still having issues after you try this, you may be best formating the memory card. This will wipe all data on it though, so make sure you do copy anything off that yo u want to keep! Format from the camera, so that choosing the format>erase all option from the menu of most cameras.
