Deleting an IMAP Account in Apple Mail

Hello,
Recently the staff director set the staff up with Apple Mail, and for the most part it is running smoothly. However, there are two workstations that share an odd glitch. An IMAP account that cannot synchronize to our mail server can also not be deleted. I tried simply deleting the ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.pl file, but alas the mailbox populated on its own (and MobileMe is probably not the cause as we are not using it).
Checking through the server's mail settings everything seems alright, though at that point I noticed that the two workstations share the same username (for instance: a1@example1, and a1@example2). The other workstations each have independent usernames.
A detail that I don't think is the cause, but may be important enough to share is that 'a1' has administrative privileges on our server. Another common link between the two workstations in question is that they are both Mac Minis (OS 10.6.3), whereas the other workstations are iMacs (OS 10.5.8).
If you have any ideas, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

I am sorry, I should have mentioned that I did try the usual method in preferences for deleting the account before trying anything else. Simultaneously removing com.apple.plist as well as the Mail folder and then restarting the workstation unfortunately does not solve the problem either. The account is somehow reproducing itself in Apple Mail.
I feel I should also be a bit more detailed with the account's syncing to our mail server; it seems like the account (on both workstations) has been trying to sync to our mail server with no success. I'm not sure if that makes a difference in the process of removing the account.
Thank you for your assistance!

  • TS3276 20GB gmail IMAP account in Apple Mail 4.5 is very slow

I have several users with large Gmail IMAP accounts (10GB - 20GB). these accounts work fine from web browser, but one user (87% of 25GB gmail account) experiences frequent slow downs and delays both sending, receiving and worse filing mail in Apple Mail 4.5
I assume this was to do with volume of mail, but other users are fine. I have repared permissions and rebuilt the index, which has made no difference, any ideas what could be causing this?
All users are running recent Imacs with snow leopard sufficient disk space and memory.

Hi, I am striking out in getting to the bottom of this issue and need advice.
I have a macbook (08) running mail 3.6 and have no problem w/ my gmail/aol/att accounts.. but with my wifes new macbook 10.6.4 (4.3 mail) Gmail constantly reloads all mail I delete and I can not receive any new emails. Mail is setting up automatically as IMAP settings even though I have my other email as POP and have no issues. I can not find any help via Apple and searching the internet seems just as bad. I have also tried ports 465 / 993 / 995 none seem to work. I have tried the unlock method as well. I will have to try this auto setup to POP as I can't get IMAP to work.. but it seems like I have tried almost everything! I have seen your responses in a number of areas to this issue but thought I could ask directly. Please help.

  • Issue setting up new imap account on apple mail

I’ve had a number of comcast.net email accounts for many years.  They were originally set up and continue to use POP protocol.  They all work fine on Apple Mail.  I recently set up one new comcast.net email account.  This new account is IMAP and it appears that’s the only choice one now has for new accounts.  I asked Apple Mail to set up an account for this new address and it did so.
It works maybe half the time.  The other half the time, I get an error message on Apple Mail for this one account only that says,
“Unable to open “xxxxxx”  The connection to the server “imap.comcast.net” on port yyy timed out.
The referenced port would appear to be the correct one for sending secure imap email.
Any thoughts as to why connecting to this one imap email account on comcast is problemmatic???

  • HT1277 how do I show just one account in apple mail?

Hi.  I have set up both personal and business (IMAP) accounts in apple mail.  How can I select just looking at emails from one account or the other?  I'd rather not have them all mashed together.  Thanks!

In the left column of mail, click on the disclosure triangle to the left of the "Inbox" label to open the view, then click on the mailbox (server) that you're interested in.
You can also take individual mailboxes (servers) offline to reduce the arriving traffic; I have a mailbox set up for mailing list traffic, for instance.

  • Can I copy emails between an IMAP account and an Exchange account, via Apple Mail client?

If I have an IMAP account configured in my Apple Mail client profile, and then I also add an Exchange 2010 Server account to that same profile, can I use the Apple Mail client to copy folders and messages from my IMAP account, into my mail store on the Exchange Server account?

Pop mail accounts must be set up to 'leave messages on the server'.
    check this before using.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
select: 'leave messages on the server'
optional: select: 'for at most xx days' this will delete anything older than specified number of days select 'Until I delete them' when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
click on Ok to save settings.
Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded regardless of whether it has been read or not. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
If you wanted to download emails in other fodlers, you would have to move emails into the Inbox in order to download them and this may not be very practical in your situation.
What you can do is synchronize your IMAP folders to get a copy downloaded to your IMAP mail account.
Then go into 'offline' mode to stop any further synchronizing as synchronized folders do get updated.
MozBackup tool could now be used to backup the Profile as synchronising created mbox files which contain emails.
You can also do the following to get a copy outside of the IMAP mail account:
Create the same folders in 'Local Folders'.
Then right click on email and 'copy to' and select Local Folders and the folder you require.
Putting a copy in Local Folders means these emails are also on your computer and they are not influenced by anything you do in the IMAP folders.
You would need to backup emails in these folders.

Btinternet being your internet service provider? If I'm correct, have you followed their directions:

  • HT1277 I am trying to setup a new email account.  Apple Mail is trying to configure it as an iMAP account but it is actually a POP account.  I cannot figure out how to override that.  What do I need to do?

I am trying to setup a secondary e-mail account which is a POP account.  However, when I try to setup the new account, Mail detects it as an iMAP account.  Once Mail sets it up as an iMAP account it doesn't work.  I cannot figure out how to override the automatic setup and manually configure it as a POP account.

Yeah, silly as it seems, OSX is trying to do too much for us, not on 10.8 to test, but try this...

I'm not sure why you would want POP over IMAP.  When IMAP is so much more versatile.
    velocityg4
Anyways if it works like 10.7 Mail.  When adding the account trick it. Do this by just entering some fake email address and password into the boxes and click continue.  It will then say it could not find the correct settings, click continue.  Now you will be given the option to enter everything manually.
Now you can choose POP and manually enter the POP and SMTP settings for Yahoo.  Which I believe are pop.mail.yahoo.com, Port 995, SSL and smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL, authentication required. Enter your correct email address now.
Once added go back to your accounts list and edit it to make sure that it now lists your correct yahoo address and not the fake address in all areas.
Note: Be sure when entering the fake email address to not use a major provider it likely knows.  So don't choose @gmail, @hotmail, &c instead use something like @weevilfarts.com.

  • I'm unable to connect my Gmail accounts to Apple Mail.

All - I've been working on this for hours.
All I want to do is connect my gmail accounts to Apple Mail.  I'm running a new Macbook Air w Mountain Lion, Apple Mail 6.5.  I can access the accounts on my ipad and iphone.  I've spent hours reading forums and help areas.
Mail repeatedly asks for my password.  In the account settings it does not save my password.
I've gotten the message that Mail cannot connect to Google imap server, but I do not believe this is a "timing" issue
    Here's what I've tried:
    Apple Side:
    -  Tried adding and deleting accounts several times within mail application
    -  tried using System Preferences > Mail/Contacts etc.
    -  Changed imap.gmail.com to imap.google.com
    -  changed to custom dedicated port for outgoing mail (587)
    -  closed and relaunched Mail
    -  Rebooted and safe rebooted computer
    -  set up and deleted accounts
    -  turned off gmail on phone and ipad
    Google Side:
    -  Enabled IMAP
    -  Not using 2 step verification
    -  Checked Captcha

If you've activated 2-step verification, you need to generate an application-specific password in your Google account and enter it in place of your old password.

I HAD two accounts because of this problem.  I completely removed the problem account from the Apple Mail client.  Guess what is happening??  That's right - Mail is still sending from the other account that no longer exists on my computer, and I have absolutely no idea how this is happening.  This is incredibly frustrating.  When a recipient chooses to reply to my message, quite often I won't get it now because it is going to the other account that has now been deleted from my system.  COME ON APPLE!!! WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THIS???

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!

I have 3 mail accounts in apple mail. One of them has had the spinning ball going for several days and I cannot receive mail in this account or delete messages etc. For some  reason, I CAN send mail on Apple mail using this account, although it takes several minutes. I can receive mail in this account on my iPad and by signing into aol on safari and internet explorer on my office PC. It's obviously a glitch in Apple's Mail. I've deleted this account and reopened it in Mail on my Mac Pro with no difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this E amil account is major to my business.

sounds like a corrupt database or index
the glitch is your home folder and mail folder, esp look at syncservices
I'd post in the mail or Lion forum where you will find similar issues being discussed.

Assuming this is an iCloud mail account, sign out of iCloud in its preference pane, then sign back in with the new password.
