Deleting "Bookmarks Bar" and "Bookmarks Menu" folders from Bookmarks

Hi all,
I synched my Safari Bookmarks...really didn't need to and now I don't want these "Bookmarks Bar" and "Bookmarks Menu" folders. Why can't I delete them?
Thanks,
Ben

Both of these menus can be deleted from Safari's iPhone bookmarks menu but the process is a little involved and requires the use of Property List Editor for the Developer Tools package.
If you have this, chances are you already know what to do, but otherwise you will need to download the Developer Tools package from Apple (and even on a fast connection) it is probably quicker to reload your iPhone from scratch.
But just in case:
1a) Quit Safari on your computer.
1b) with you iPhone sync'd to iTunes, unselect the sync automatically box. (You can go back later, just do it for now.)
2) Navigate to ~/Library/Safari/Booksmarks.plist file.
3) Make a copy and rename it Bookmarks(original).plist. This is your backup file in case things go wrong.
4) Launch Safari.
5) Create a new folder called Bookmarks, or whatever you want your top level Bookmarks folder to be on your iPhone.
6) Drag all folders and urls that you want for you iPhone into this folder.
7) Arrange it the way that you want. You can also do this on the iPhone, but it is easier to do it here, than on the phone.
8) QUIT SAFARI AND DO NOT RELAUNCH IT. (This is important, because you are going to edit this file to remove those folders and Safari will recreate them if you launch it.)
9) Open your Bookmarks.plist file in the Property List Editor.
10) Navigate to the Children arrow and expand.
11) Select the "0" item and delete (That is the Bookmarks bar, or Bookmarksbar menu that Safari hard codes to the bookmarks list)
12) Select the "1" item and also delete (This is the BookmarksMenu item)
13) If you poke around in this file, you will notice the History, RSS feeds, and your top level menu that you created in #5.
14) Save the modifications and close the Bookmarks.plist file, (save changes if prompted).
15) DO NOT LAUNCH SAFARI (just a reminder)
16) Launch iTunes and select the iPhone, DO NOT SYNC IT YET.
17) Select the info tab, and scroll to the Web Browser section and select the "Sync Safari bookmarks" checkbox.
18) Scroll to the Advanced section and select the "Bookmarks" checkbox.
19) Click "Apply" and "Sync"
20) wait for sync to complete.
21) remove iPhone from cradle and check your Safari bookmarks. You should be good to go with the iPhone's Safari and its bookmarks, however you are not done yet.
22) THIS IS IMPORTANT. For this modification to last, you have to go back to iTunes.
23) reinstall the iPhone on the cradle, AGAIN DO NOT SYNC.
24) go back to the "Sync Safari bookmarks" checkbox and unselect it. Then click the "Apply" button again. This will prevent Safari on your computer from syncing to Safari on your iPhone. If you ever do, with this box checked, those two pesky menus will reappear.
25) You are done.
Hope this helped,
zac

  • Removing 'Bookmarks Bar' and 'Bookmarks Menu' from Safari

Since installing Mountain Lion on my MBP, I've had Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu folders added to my mobile safari. It's pretty annoying now with Reading List and History, that my mobile bookmarks start halfway down the page.
Is there any way to remove them?

My title bar with the ability to close windows is not available.  I must hold the cursor at the top of the page to see my title with time, etc.

  • 5.1.3 Restoring bookmarks bar and menu ?

I'm running Safari 5.1.3 on imac on 10.7.3
I just synced my ipad to computer.
On my bookmarks bar on the ipad I had only 2 bookmarks. On the computer I had a whole bunch. Same with bookmarks menu.
After the sync, on my computer, it had deleted all the bookmarks on my bookmarks bar, and only left me the 2 that were on the ipad. Same with bookmarks menu.
Seems to have affected bookmarks bar and menu only. Rest of bookmarks are OK.
I have an external backup drive and backed up a week ago. But, have never had to restore anything.
What's the procedure to restore the bookmarks bar and menu in Safari, using time machine?
    Thanks.

The only way is to restore from a useful backup, if you have one.
If you sync the iPad to iTunes and use Time Machine regularly, you would likely have the appropriate backup to restore from. In that case:
Restore the iPad backup set from Time Machine from a date before you overwrote the bookmarks. The location of the backup is ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ (you can get to it by pressing Cmd+Shift+G in the Finder and entering this path).
Connect the iPad, run iTunes and restore from the backup.
If you use iCloud Backup, then you can restore from iCloud and choose which date's backup you'd like to restore from. You can check if you're using iCloud Backup by opening the Settings app on the iPad, then going to the iCloud submenu and looking at the status right below "Storage & Backup", where it would say "iCloud Backup is off." (or "iCloud Backup is on.", as the case may be).
In any case, keep in mind that restoring from a backup means you lose all application data changes after the date of the backup.

  • Repetition in Bookmarks Bar and Menu Sidebar, shifting in MenuBar,

I am seeing deleted bookmarks return as well as it seems a neverending growth and repetetion of my bookmarks since 5.1.2 update and numerous repeats in the bookmarks bar and menu. See attached screenshot. Yes, I used MobileMe and have been using iCloud since so I suspect it is related.
    Thanks for any thoughts

Actually, it just keeps growing. Even more repetition today. I have emptied cache, reset Safari, replaced the bookmark.plist file with an older Time Machine backup and within minures it starts repopulating and starts all over again growing in duplications. This has to be iCloud related in my opinion. If not, where is it coming from.
It seems various threads with different descriptions of the same problem or a variant of bookmarks and menubar issue are being addressed in this Safari forum, and most just started seeing this it seems in the last several weeks but not before the 5.1.2 update.
Does anyone else think so? This appears to need Apple Support attention at an advanced level, as all the suggestions, while great to have and try, they are not working. I'll bet this issue is very widespread, just not observed or reported yet.

  • Delete multiple Bookmarks while keeping Bookmarks Bar and Opening Tabs

    Hello.
I want to delete a lot of bookmarks from my Bookmarks Panel, but can only seem to do so one at a time.
I have accumulated hundreds of bookmarks that I don't need. But I want to keep my Bookmarks Bar in which I have a series of folders containing all the Bookmarks I use. I also open Safari in about 11 or so Tabs and I want to keep those too.
Under 'Collections' in my Bookmarks left hand panel I have my Bookmarks Bar and a few other items - History, Bonjour, RSS Feeds etc. I want to keep all of these. But below this group is another very large list of 'Bookmarks'. I'd like to delete all of those bookmarks in one go, or at least in groups of multiple bookmark deletions. But I can't find any way to do so.
Deleting the Bookmarks.plist deletes everything including all my folder-based Bookmarks Bar contents.
Is there any way to select just the extra Bookmarks for deletion?
    Thanks.

You did not need to purchase Prariefire for $6.99 to delete multiple bookmarks in Safari. This is a ripoff app for what you can easily do in Safari for free.  All you needed to do is select the bookmarks to delete by single tap on your touchpad, or left click on your mouse, and hold down the shift key to select a range of bookmarks to delete; then simply press the "delete" key on your keyboard and the bookmarks will be deleted.  If you want to delete various bookmarks not in a single range, simply hold down your command key and select the bookmarks to delete and then press the "delete" key on your kepboard to delete them.

  • Bookmark bar and menu stop working after awhile on Firefox 12

I have upgraded to Firefox 12. Everything works fine when I start up Firefox, but after some amount of use (and I can't always reproduce this) eventually when I click on bookmarks in my Bookmark Bar or from the Bookmark menu, nothing happens. Firefox doesn't load the bookmark. If I open the "Show All Bookmarks" window and click on bookmarks there, they load fine and then the menu and bookmark bar suddenly start working again. If I close the "Show All Bookmarks" window the Bookmark Bar and menu stop working again.

    Hi ischou,
I haven't heard of this particular issue, but you might want to try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. Let is sit for a while as you described above and if you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
You could also try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles?s=create+a+new+profile&r=2&e=es&as=s#w_creating-a-profile Creating a new profile].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Bookmarks bar and home page problem in Safari 8.02

Safari 8.0.2 is driving me mad with it’s apparent differences from previous versions. Principally, I no longer have a bookmarks bar and cannot set a home page. So, off I went to the Apple support site at http://www.apple.com/support/mac-apps/safari/ and was amazed to find no reference to 8.02? It all seems to be about Safari 7. (How I wish I could actually go back to that version)
Am I just not seeing something obvious past the frustration of continually finding that so many tasks which used to be so easy in previous OS versions, seem to be so confusing in Yosemite? I am currently running Safari 8.02 installed and updated courtesy of the, (for me at least) disastrous Yosemite 10.10.1.
It really gets my back up to think that Apple forces users to depend on the goodwill of the volunteers on this forum to solve problems with their OS. Clearly, they don’t make enough money to provide the resources to keep their own support pages up to date!
Sorry all, end of rant, but If anybody knows how to get the bookmarks bar back and get the home page preference setting to actually work, can you please help me?
    John

    Hello Linc,
Thanks for your speedy reply. I knew it would be something embarrassingly simple. (although I have to say I was looking for bookmarks, not favourites) Anyway, thank you.
Reference the home page, I am going to preferences/general, with my desired home page as the current one and clicking on set to current page option but whenever I restart Safari, it opens with whatever page was current when I last quit Safari. I have also tried typing the desired homepage in that homepage box but it still seems to have a mind of its own. (I have put a home page icon on the menu bar at the top, next to the url which works fine but I never had to do this before, the homepage setting in general preferences used to work just fine)
    regards,
    John

  • The font in Safari's bookmarks bar and tabs bar has suddenly changed

The font in Safari's bookmarks bar and tabs bar has suddenly changed to a lighter font.  How do I change the font back?  I'm not speaking of the font size/type in the web browser in viewing web pages, but the font in the application itself has changed. It's rather annoying and would like to be able to change it back!  I'm running Safari v5.1.7

    OK, Margie, here's what to do . . .
    First Quit Safari.
Then Find your User's (Home) folder library.
It's hidden, but here's how you find the Home Library:
Click on the desktop to get the Finder menu.  Then go up to  "Go" in the menu bar, while holding down the option key.
You'll now see the User Library in the drop down list. Open it, then look for the Fonts folder.
Take the fonts folder to the desktop.
    Restart Safari.
    Any better?
(Warning:  This is only for the Users/Home > Library > Fonts folder.  Under no circumstances, should this be done with the SYSTEM > Library > Fonts folder.)

  • RSS, Bookmarks Bar and Auto-Click

As we all know, if you have a folder in your bookmarks bar with auto-click enabled, and that folder has feed:// type bookmarks in it, Safari will automatically aggregate the feeds in that folder into one tab when you click the folder in your bookmarks bar.
Also, if you do not have auto-click enabled and you click the folder in your bookmarks bar and choose "Open in Tabs" - all of the feed:// bookmarks open in their own tab.
What I am trying to figure out is how to get the Auto-Click to open all of the feed:// bookmarks in their own tabs - I do not want to slog through a long rss page of 500 unread articles, and yes I know about the source links on the safari rss pages.
Does not seem to be an option anywhere in Safari, maybe a hack/script/shareware add-on I could use to do this?

    PowerBook G4 Aluminium   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I thought it should have just been there, I just wasn't sure; it had been so long since I set auto-click up. I told him to delete the plist, but it didn't make a difference. Regardless, thanks for the insight, and for responding so promtly. At this point it sounds more like operator error, rather than Safari's problem (which is surprising considering he's been a mac addict since they were on the market, and programs on one every day).
    Thanks again!

  • How can I take off the text on the bookmark bar and just leave the Icons of the bookmarks on the boomark bar ?

I'd like to save space for more sites on my bookmark bar so I'd like to take off the text on the bookmark bar and just leave the site Icon's...that way there will be much more space to add on more sites to my bookmark bar.

SImple open the bookmark properties and erase the name, to open the bookmark properties:
*Go to '''Bookmarks''' >> '''Show all bookmarks''' >> or press '''Ctrl+Shift+B ''' click on the bookmark to see the properties.
*Go to bookmark page click on the blue star to see the properties or Press Ctrl+D

  • Is it possible to remove the delimiting line between Bookmarks bar and Tab bar?

I place the Tab bar between the Bookmarks bar and the page content area, as the attached image shows.
Is it possible to remove the delimiting line between Bookmarks bar and Tab bar? I feel that line is redundant.

Your Tab bar doesn't look standard.
Did you check the code with the default theme if you currently use a custom theme?

  • Why is my macbook's bookmarks bar and browsing history on my daughters separate laptop when her browser is open under her user account

when my daughter logs in to safari on her macbook, my favorites bar and my internet history from my macbook show up - how can i stop this ?

Eddy is right, if you still want iCloud on her laptop under your name (for instance so you can still 'find her mac' from YOUR account or you use 'notes' among your family), then go into 'system preferences' then 'icloud' on HER machine and deselect Safari.
Note, though, that your daughter could still re-enable Safari sync later and see your history.
If you really want to keep browsing history 'clean' but have a unified iCloud account, I would disable it on her machine but also surf 'privately' on my device to make sure that my browsing history isn't avaiable to others.

  • Split Suite Bar and Ribbon Menu in SharePoint Online / O365

As we all know the suite bar and ribbon menu controls are loaded from a single control. I have a requirement to place a div between suite bar and ribbon menu as shown in the image. Is it possible in SharePoint Online / O365?

    Actual Requirement

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to do customization in SharePoint Online with the requirement above.
For the first question, continue to Scott, you can read the rss feed, the rss feed effectively contains the items from the list, you can read the list using Client Object Model to get RSS feed.
For the second question, if you want to get current log in profile in my site, then you can try to use user profile rest api to get it.
    User profiles REST API reference
For the third question, if you want to deploy the announcement app from on-premise to Online, if it's OOTB app, then it's not necessary, SharePoint Online have the announcement app as well.
For the fourth question, if the CapIQ is a customize solution, I suggest you can use SharePoint hosted app to publish to the SharePoint online site.
How to: Publish an app for SharePoint by using Visual Studio
For the fifth question, if you want to upload the questions not create in site to the survey,  you can use Client Object Model to create the questions.
Here is a similiar thread for your reference:
    Importing
    Questions into a Sharepoint Survey
For the sixth question, if the information is stored in the list, then you can read the list using Client Object Model and it's better to create a SharePoint hosted app to achieve it.
    More information:
How to: Create a basic SharePoint-hosted app
    Retrieve list item

  • I'm using Pale Moon x64. The icon on the task bar and start menu looks like a 'computer' and not the pale moon icon-why is that?

My computer is Windows 7-64 bit.
I recently installed the Pale Moon x64 from the proper site.
All is working properly, except that the 'icon' for PM in the task bar and start menu is not the blue moon. I wonder why that is and how I can change it.
This happened on install of PM.

Thanks, but I can't find any answer to my question there.
I can't even figure out how to post a question.
When I put a few words in the comment section/bar, the result was nil.
Everything is working, I just want the icon to be correct.
I guess the motto of 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it' may have to satisfy me.
Maybe it will change when there is an update.
