Deleting cells in Numbers

I had finally gotten my NUMBERS table the way I wanted it when I noticed that I needed some rows between two entries. I'm a beginner, but I've learned how to add rows. Unfortunately, I've also learned how easy it is to get into trouble with NUMBERS. My table is using the "Blue Headers" style. The problem is that I somehow got one "Blue Headers" cell into a column where it doesn't belong, and it's causing problems, so I can't just ignore it. How do I remove it? I've tried highlighting it and pressing the DELETE button,but that doesn't work.

What happened is you copied a cell from a header and pasted it elsewhere into the table. It copied the contents of the cell including the formatting, just as it should. You can change the cell fill color and borders back to how they were (the procedures are covered in the User's Manual). Or you can select the table, go to the sidebar, click on the triangle to the right of "blue headers", and select "clear and apply style". This will clear all user-added formatting from the table and put it back to the template default.

Delete as in it goes away and other cells shift into its place? Not a feature of Numbers. You can delete an entire column or row but not a single cell. You can select surrounding cells and move them up or over one cell, thereby overwriting the cell to be "deleted".

If by delete you really mean clear the contents of a cell, then just click once on the cell and hit the 'delete' button.

So it's not strictly true that Numbers does not delete one cell, ever. It can if you have a one-column table.

I am new to numbers for iPad. How do I delete rows in Numbers for iPad? I am able to delete the data in the rows/cells but I can't delete/move up the rows so I can move data in it's place.

I used to be able to select multipule cells in a row (such as company name, address, etc.) then paste and match style on to a pages letter. I found the paste and match style option in the edit menu, however it will only work one cell at a time. Before the update is was working great.

For diagnosing purpose thy the procedure in a new user account and see if it works there. You create a new user account in the System Preferences > Accounts. If it works in the new account it is probably a corrupt plist file that needs to be deleted.

Moving cells independent of rows, ie delete cell and move others up.

This has to be easy but i can't figure it out. I have a document with 4 columns by 50 rows. All of the cells are independent of the rows they are in and from time to time i need to delete a cell and move the cells below it up. Its easy in excel, you just highlight the cell and it asks "move up" or "move down". I can't seem to find anything comparable in numbers. I seem to be only able to delete entire rows which would delete cells in other columns that I need. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

It's pretty easy in Numbers too, but it's not the same. Let's say you want to move all the cells below a certain cell up one row to eliminate that single cell. Select all the cells that you want to move, Edit > Mark for Move, click on the cell you want to eliminate, Edit > Move.

It has nothing to do with iOS 6. It's always been that way. Given that it's been this way for so long, one assumes that Apple knows about it and has their own reasons for not changing it.
Restore the phone as new, not from back up to delete the numbers. Or, wait until the cache gets overwritten.

does anyone know if you can lock individual cells in numbers? i need to be able to navigate from unlocked cell to unlocked cell avoiding all locked cells.
it's easy in excel, we use complex vlookup formulas that return information to other cells and need to protect those formula cells from accidental deletion. protecting cells is also a nice way to limit tabbed navigation to unprotected cells only.
does anyone know if i can do this with numbers, can't seem to find anything that suggest it can do it.

Apparently cell locking is not supported. From Macworld's review:
"There are also quite a few power user features missing from Numbers, such as custom number formats, pivot tables, cell naming, *cell locking*, password protection, splitting windows, and text orientation within a cell, among others."

NO, there is no split cell function. You can do what you want, which I think is you want one row to have a column that is split, like this:
To do this:
create a table with two rows:
Now select two adjacent cells in the same row and merge them:
Now select the first row and duplicate by using the <option> + <up arrow> key combination:
To add rows below the row with the merged cells, select the row with the merged cell, then copy
now select a row that is earlier and paste,
you can delete the row with the merged cell at the end
or you can select a row without a merged cell, copy, then paste over one that has a merged cell.
WARNING: you should know that all kinds of undesireable things happen with merged cells.

Don't look at column E of any of those tables. I was testing part of the formula there and forgot to delete it.
For the categories to be in numerical order in your categorized table, you have to sort your categories into ascending order. Use the Reorganization panel and set up a two column sort: Sort by Column G ascending then by Column H ascending. I assume you were doing that anyway.

Or insert a single cell table onto your Numbers document, type an = sign in the cell then click on the cell you want to print. Drag the new table to a second sheet, set up your page there, and print.

How can I insert an image into a cell in Numbers for iPad?

Hi,
is there any way to insert an image inside a cell using Numbers for iPad? I tried doing it on desktop version and it works, then I shared it through iwork.com and downloaded into my iPad and it's showing fine on the iPad ( although there's no way to edit or change the image inside the cell ) but when I try to do the same task on iPad itself, the image always comes floating even if I place the cursor inside a cell before inserting.
any idea how to do it or if it's even possible?

Images can be added to cells only as "image fill." Cell fill is an attribute of the cell, not content of the cell. Only cell content can be retrieved by a formula or by copying the content of the cell.
Copying the cell will also copy its format, including the image fill, but I've found no way to extract the image from the cell.

How can I delete my old numbers on Caller ID?

Hello, I'm trying to delete my old numbers on Caller ID,
some can be but some cannot be deleted.
With numbers which cannot be deleted, there is this sentence;
"Registered to your device"
and "delete" link is gray, I cannot click it.

I have tried as well to delete an old number that I no longer use or have but the delete key on the website is grayed out. Is something wrong with the site or how can this be deleted. I currently have bought two skype numbers. The third on was an old number.

Hi there,
I'm relatively new to Mac world, but I do have years of computer experience from a PC and have also had to do with Macs at the age of first eMacs . I have finally decided to switch to the brighter side of life (hopefully ;)).
But here is my question: I need to count words in a cell in Numbers'09.
Is there a specific function combination for achieving this? My idea was: strip excessive spaces, count the occurencies of all space character in a cell, add 1 and voila! Problem is I can not achieve it using formulas in Numbers'09. I have found some help for Excell but the formulas are a little different. And well, I would like to leave the past behind and stick to a Apple programs - if I can. I don't like the idea to install Excell on a Windows Bootcamp partion only for this purpose.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

An easy soluce for foreign users (like me) is to duplicate Numbers.app and remove its languages resources minus English.
Running it you will have it running in English (minus the decimal and the parameters separators, minus also date time formats and default currency).
It would be easy to enter the formulas given in this forum.
Once saved, we may open the doc in the 'standard' Numbers and the formulas will be automatically localized.

As I'm lazy, I use this script and paste where I want.

I made a test which gave a funny result.
Given a Numbers document with a chart.
I selected the chart, the title and the legends
then I grouped these objects.
Select all
copy
run the script
I pasted in the sheet to be able to take a screenshot.
It's a bit inconsistent.
Text values are passed when they are in cells
They are passed when they are used as value labels in the chart
but they aren't passed when they are chart's title or legend's components.
Funny behavior, the graphic symbols are moved in the process to the location where they would be if the text components were nil strings.
No comment upon a table's title which can't be selected with the table itself.
