Deleting Checkpoint subtree in Hyper-V started merge on live machine

Background:
Physical Host: Windows Server 2012 R2
Virtual Machine: Windows Server 2012 R2
I've been reading online about the fact that you need to delete snapshots/checkpoints for performance rather than leave them lingering forever. Sadly what little information I've found online seems to be inaccurate. Some people say delete the checkpoint
then power off the machine. Others say Delete the checkpoint subtree and then SHUT DOWN the machine, not power off.
While the latter seems to be more accurate than other blogs I've read, it still didn't seem to be entirely accurate. Deleting the subtree seemed to start the merge before I even had a chance to shut the VM down. I saw the status in the Hyper-V virtual machines
pane and it immediately started merging.
It appears to have worked out fine, but I am curious if this is normal. I am wondering if the blogs I read are specific to older versions of Hyper-V (2008), as they don't quite have a date or other indicator on the blogs.

2008 you had to shut down (or turn off) the VM to start the merge process.  Change was made in 2012 to start the merge process without shutting down the VM.

  • Delete snapshot subtree fails

Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter with Hyper-V role installed.  OS on drive C.  Hyper-V configured to store everything on drive D.
Created a snapshot of a VM prior to installing software update on VM.
    Update was successful.
Shut down VM, then in Hyper-V Manager attempt to either Delete snapshot subtree or Delete Snapshot in order to merge.
    Get failure message:
An error occurred while attempting to delete the selected snapshot subtree.
    <server> failed to remove snapshot.
    Have restarted machine and VMMS.
Nothing else I can find online to resolve this.

I usually run into this error due to Anti-Virus.
Make sure that you have set the proper AV exclusions according to the following blog:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2179.hyper-v-anti-virus-exclusions-for-hyper-v-hosts.aspx
    Hope this helps!

How can i delete an old iCloud account and start using my own using my Apple ID? If I don't have the old password??

If your device is signed into an old iCloud ID that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library).  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

I suggest changing the existing ID rather than creating a new one, all purchases are forever linked to the ID that bought and can never be transferred, you can change all detauils about your ID here:

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

How much free space do you actually have? Go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac... More Info... and click on the Storage tab. You should see something like this...
This will show you how much free space you have and what's taking up all the space on your hard drive. You may need to backup and trash some seldom used files, applications, etc. You have to drag them into the Trash and empty the trash to regain the space. A general rule of thumb is that you should have about 15% of your hard drive storage free.
    Good luck,

With Snow Leopard if you delete a file (put it the trash) and then do a secure delete it's gone.
The OP is adressing SSD's in particular. Neither Snow Leopard nor Lion have the ability to secure erase an SSD of a single file by user action. This because SSD's write data in pages, but can only delete in blocks. Secure emptying of the trash on an SSD is no different than a non-secure erase, as the controller will not permit erasure of blocks until the entire block is freed, which is almost never the case with even group file deletion. Erasure is simply the re-writing of the "allocation table" that the pages are no longer in use.
SSD's are only rendered "erased" of previous data after an indeterminate period of use, and re-use that would eventually free blocks for re-write, and then actually over-written.
TRIM helps speed this process, but does not alleviate the block versus page issue.
    Some additional info.

  • HT3275 How do i merge 2 time machine backups?

    Hi
Would anyone have any tips on merging 2 time machine backups, or if it even is possible due to the hard links used?
    Thanks in advance

You don't.. TM is already an incredibly complicated piece of software.. and the moment you start fiddling with it you can almost bet you will break it. Keep old versions as archives.. if there is anything you need restore it to a different location.. copy it back to your normal drive.. and then allow it to be backed up in your current TM backup..
