Deleting corrupt fonts from Safe Mode

I can only boot my iMac in Safe Mode because of Kernel panics. They started right after I began using (though it was downloaded and installed weeks ago) a free font so now I'm trying to get rid of it. Problem is, safe mode only loads w/ about two dozen normal fonts. Where did the fonts I need to trash go? Thanks in advance for any leads.

do you know which font it is? fonts are stored in /Library/Fonts or possibly in homedirectory/Library/fonts. delete the problem font and reboot normally.
P.S. you might also want to clear font caches. The easiest is to use a 3rd party app for this. there are many that will do it: Onyx, Cocktail or Font Finagler.

    Dear,
After I turned on my macbook in safe mode I deleted many files to make about 68 GB free space. Then I shutdown my macbook from safe mode. Problem is whenever I try to start the laptop again afterwards it gets turned off automatically after a 30 seconds or a minute. Please help me to troubleshoot.

Thanks Linc. When I push the power button on it shows the safe mode but the machine is turned off within a minute. I don't know about the backups as I am unable to turn on the Macbook.

  • XP crashes when booting everything apart from safe mode

My PC (with K7N-ILSR mobo) has been running fine for ages. Suddenly now it's crashing when booting - it crashes for everything apart from safe mode. it also crashes on safe mode with networking. i've tried disabling the onboard LAN, unplugging the cable, etc without success. any idea what i can do to fix it?

    to dancing_bear,
try to resinstall the graphics card drivers in safe mode. this problem is likely due to corrupted graphics card drivers. if still fails, i suggest that u back up your data, then perform a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system.
if problem still persist after all these workarounds, then open up your pc chassics and observe all the cooling fans. make sure that are all working properly. (of course your pc has to be on) if any of the fan is not spining or spining very slowly, then its time to replace them. also not forgetting to check on the capacitors as well. they should not be bludging from the top or having brownish substances at the top or bottom of the capacitors. if you happen to see these, then send your motherboard for a recap.
    cheers

I´m unable to authorise my purchases download from itunes store, and the SC itunes file wouldn´t be deleted (prompts not allowed) , even in safe mode. Does anyone experienced the same error? Any solution other than posted? Thanks.

Just in case we're dealing with file/disk damage here, try running a disk check over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you delete the SCInfo folder now?

Problem: after running in 'Safe Mode', I restarted and it won't boot.
I push power button, and screen comes on with startup tone, then grey apple logo shows up, and a few seconds later, spinning wheel, but a progress bar is below it, and after a few seconds, wheel stops spinning, and screen goes to black and machine shuts down.

  • After rebooting from safe mode, the system doesn't come up.

I have a macbook pro (2011), and I had a problem with its fan which was always on. i made a quick search and found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787129?start=0&tstart=0
i applied the procedure explained by the last response by Linc Davis who suggested to boot in safe mode and check if the problem still exists. I did so and found out that the fan wasn't running in safe mode. However, after I restarted the machine to boot regularly, the os didn't start. I keep seeing the gray screen with apple logo and the process indicator. After one day, I still have the same problem. Can any body help me with this?
    Thank you

Linc Davis who suggested to boot in safe mode and check if the problem still exists.
I keep seeing the gray screen with apple logo and the process indicator.
What occured is Safe Mode performed disk repairs that didn't fix your drive corruption.
When you rebooted normally, the at boot FSCK drive check fails to complete thus you see the gray screen with stuck progress bar.
Your next actions are as follows.
1: If you have a lastest backup of your files off the machine to a external storage drive or bootable clone, then your good to go. Have your boot drive replaced by Apple and restore from backup.
2: If you don't have a latest copy of your files off the machine and need data recovery off the drive, then first seek the services of a local PC/Mac software specialist.
Only having a TimeMachine drive for backup is problematic for the fact that it's data gets corrupted when your boot drive get corrupted, so it will either fail to restore or restore and your problems seem to reappear. You can lose all your files as many here have found out.
3: If your under AppleCare or warranty, most certainly have Apple replace the drive and check the machine out. However if your a tinkerer, out of coverage, you can replace the drive yourself in some models of Mac's and reinstall OSX and return files from the storage drive or the clone. (clones can be accessed for just the files without restoring a corrupted OS X/programs)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
    Reset your Mac

  • My Mac Book Pro (2010 - Snow Leopard) won't boot, or boot from safe mode.

Hi, a bit of back ground knowledge bout the situation first, I was visiting home to see my family for two weeks in the UK, as i am currently on an internship in Dubai.
A few days ago (one day before i flew back to Dubai from the UK - Thursday 10/07/2014) I noticed out of the blue that my Mac book Pro (i believe early/mid 2010 model) suddenly started running extremely slow. (prior to this I had be using it fine, using an array of programs like Safari & Photoshop that i know usually slows down the Mac, but unlike what I would usually experience, this was pretty much a complete freeze for 5 minutes at a time every time i tried moving my mouse/closing a program or even clicking on something. I decided I would close everything and give the computer a rest. This took a long long time, I had to force quit many of the programs open, then once going to the drop down menu to shut down the laptop it wouldn't shut down. So after a long time of waiting to shut down I decided to force it to shut down by holding down the power button.
I left it for the evening, and then decided to turn on the laptop so it was 'on and working' for my flight back to Dubai as there had been 'stricter airport measures introduced in the UK for flights abroad' and there was a rumor that you had to prove that all electrical devices can be turned on when and if asked by airport security. after a long time it finally turned on and loaded the home screen, it had a long period on the grey apple screen with the turning gear. However still when turned on the problem of being extremely slow - freezing for 5 minutes every time i would click a program or something on the mac, like the drop down menu with the shut down option for example - still persisted. As I had to fly home the next morning (Friday 11/07/2014) I just closed the laptop lid like i had down thousands of times before over the past 3-4 years, packed it in my hand luggage and and went to bed. I flew back to Dubai.
Over the next few days (Saturday 11/07/2014 - Monday 14/07/2014) I used the laptop sparingly a it was super slow, but i did manage to watch the second half of the world cup runners up match between Holland & Brasil. I then went on to attempt to use the safari the on the Monday night, but it was too slow to really do anything, e.g. i couldn't even really look at the BBC website as it was too painfully slow!
This is when I decided to look up why it may be working so slow via my iphone.
    So I shut it down,
I looked on forums and support ages and first thing they recommended was a 'safe mode boot up', so I decided to boot up in safe mode. This is where the problem seems to worsen. The Mac book pro would turn on to the grey apple screen and the progress bar appears, it begins to fill up but then reaches perhaps 20-30% then suddenly the laptops fan seems to go into over drive, making lots of noise when before this moment as it tried to boot up it was silent, then it just turns off.
I decided to retry booting up without holding down shift (safe boot mode), but it returns to the grey apple screen with the progress bar again, as if it was in safe mode even though I had held down shift. The same problem happens, its silent as the bar fills until abut 20-30% then it seems to 'overheat' and then turn off again.
I tried to boot it up again and again, both 'normally' without holding down shift, and 'safe mode', but the same issue arises.
So i turned to the forums and help pages again, and there was a mention of a PRAM reset. So i tried booting it up this time but holding down 'CMD + ALT + P + R' on the moment of the first chime, then as normal with a PRAM reset it chimed twice more before I let go of the keyboard. The progress bar again appeared on the grey start up apple page, and this time reached roughly the same 20-30% mark, but without overheating or making a fan noise, it then seemed to restart the progress bar a second time. This time as it reached the 20-30% it would again over heat and then instantly turn off.
I then decided to do a Hardware test. So i turned on the power and held down 'D', this successfully brought up the Hardware testing window, I did a regular test and within a few minutes it said there was no hard ware issue. Not convinced i decided to do an detailed/advanced hardware test which took alot longer. This time after a few minutes it started to make fan noises and 'overheating noises' however completed the hardware test and again said there was no hardware problems. I opted for the 'shut down' option on the screen instead of 'restart'.
I then decided to try and boot it up normally again, and the progress bar appears on the grey apple start up screen, it again reaches 20-30% then turns off.
I've exhausted my knowledge of what to do, and all the forums seem not to give the answer i'm looking for. It sees like no one has had the EXACT same problem i'm experiencing. Also being in Dubai for a further 7 weeks, I can't take the Mac book pro to an apple store, and I do not have any of the install DVD discs ect with me to try booting from DVD disc install.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me on what I could try next? I'd be hugely grateful! Please reply below or email me.

    Some things you can try.

  • Getting from Safe Mode to a "normal" boot

I have 24 inch white iMac that I'm in the process of trying to get back to life. Prior to starting work on it, I could get no further than a white screen, no matter what I tried.
After getting Tech Tool Pro 6, I was able to get it running by cloning the contents of my hard drive from my Mini running 10.7.2. I tried a fresh install from a Snow Leopard retail disc and numerous other things, but cloning was the only thing that's worked.
At this point, the iMac will only start in Safe Mode. I'm trying to get it to boot normally. What files should I add or remove and what preferences should I change to do this? I realize that this is a pretty wide open question, but I'm fairly new at this (working from a cloned hard drive, that is).

With TechTool Pro. I pretty much did a duplicate clone.
It was from a 2009 Mini, so I'm guessing some files may not be needed and could be causing problems. I just don't know enough about what Safe Mode loads to know which are needed and which are not.

  • Grey startup screen on my profile, but I can access guest profile and my hardrive partition to windows?!?! I had a kernal panic after it was knocked off coffee table in my user account, now I cannot access it from safe mode or anything... :(

My laptop fell off the coffee table, and slammed shut. It then produced a kernal Panic to restart, which I did. It the brings up the user icons, mine and guest, but will not go past the grey screen with spinner on mine. It does let me into the basic safari setting I had on the guest user, AND when i press option on start up, will let me access the windows partition I have set up and all works fine.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with display screen and the NVRAM/PRAM restarts, and nothing!
I have let the battery run completely, restarted, filled up the battery before starting.... everything.... anybody have any ideas? else I am going to have to visit a genius! grrrrrrr....
    Thanks in advance!

Looks like that is what you are going to end up doing.  No telling what was damaged internally.

  • Switch from safe mode to normal mode problem

my comuter is stuck in safe mode , when start up i press f8 and try starting in normal mode but it still goes to safe mode . how can i fix that?

    Hi,
First, please let me know if there is any program or updates installed before the issue occurs.
You may take the following steps to test this issue:
    1. Boot the system using the “Last known good configuration”:
    1). Turn on your machine
2). Immediately begin tapping the F8 key repeatedly (If you get to the Windows startup screen start over)
3). When the Startup Options menu comes up select “Last known good configuration”
4). Let the computer attempt to boot into Windows
If this successfully gets you booted into Vista you should be ok. Your system will function as it did before. If this does not get you booted into Vista
normally we can try running the System File Scanner.
    2. System File Scanner
    1). Turn on your machine
2). Immediately begin tapping the F8 key repeatedly (If you get to the Windows startup screen start over)
3). When the Startup Options menu comes up select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt”
4). At the command prompt type this command sfc /scannow
    5). Then press enter
This utility will look for damaged or missing system files and attempt to correct the problem. When it finishes, it will tell you the results (example:
SFC found and fixed problems). Restart your system normally. If you boot successfully into Vista, the problem should be solved. Let us know if either of these steps solve the problem.

  • Won't start up from Safe Mode

Powerbook G4 goes to blue screen during regular start-up. Tried starting it in Safe Mode and it stops on the Apple blue background and won't got any further. I was on Safari earlier and it froze, so I did a hard restart. Now it just stops on one of the blue screens mentioned above. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Donna

Simon, I had a similar problem after restarting (after a software update), resulting in the dreaded blue screen:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=450601&tstart=0
I've since 'zero-ed' the disk and am now back to square -1 on Jaguar until I find my Panther disk!
Although my problem was a drive error, you can still try some of the fixes that should work, e.g try repairing disk permissions using disk utility, i.e before taking the drastic measures I finally had to take.
    Good luck

  • How do I get back to normal mode from safe mode and enable add ons again?

I switched to safe mode to disable a few add-ons, but now I want to go back to normal mode. How do I do that?

Firefox will open normally as long as you do not click the Safe mode link in the Start menu.
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    >In Firefox 4 Safe mode also disables plugins (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and hardware acceleration (Tools > Options > Advanced > General)

  • Deleting a font from the favorites collection (in Mail)

This is certainly something I can live with if I have to but while I can easily add fonts to my "favorites" collection I see NO way to get rid of them. None. Going to "add to favorites" does not give the option to remove from favorites. As usual, Apple Help is no help
    dual 2.3 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   8 gig RA<</span>

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I didn't explain the situation properly. When in Mail, if I access Fonts (Apple T) I see, in the Collection area, a list of 12 Collections, beginning with "All Fonts" and ending with "Web". Numbers 2&3, between "All Fonts" and "Chinese", are "Favorites" and "Recently Used". There are several interesting things to note about these two Collections (in addition to the problem I first described). For one thing, if I select either of them then "Family" becomes the only category to the right ("Typeface" goes away). That makes sense, I suppose. Also, if I select either of them the "-" option goes away, so those two Collections are not deleteable. If I select "Recently Used" there is never anything in it and, finally, if I go to "Manage Fonts" those two Collections, Favorites and Recently Used, are not seen.
So, I now have three fonts in that "Favorites" Collection, one of which is, in fact, my favorite and two of which are not. There is no way to remove the two non-favorites from that dialogue box. They will not drag anywhere and "Add Fonts" option does simply that. There is no option to remove. If I go to "Manage Fonts" the "Favorites" (and the "Recently Used") Collection is not seen. If I go to ~/Library/Fonts/ that's all there are-fonts. If I go to ~/Library/FontCollections/ then I see nine collections (Chinese through Web) plus one named "com.apple.Favorites.collection". Sounds as though we're getting close! But, sadly, these aren't folders, they're Collections. If I try to open on it tries to open with Adobe Bridge which is less than helpful.
Do you have any other thoughts? As I said, I can live (long and prosperously) with this. It just isn't the way it should be.
    Thanks,
    gerard
