Deleting dmg files

There are dmg files and dmg.download files in the download folder. Can I delete these if they are showing up in applications or in other places? If they are in both places is it actually taking up twice the drive space, too? I have several Parallel files too. When you update files do you also need to keep the previous ones? I have had many difficulties and do not want mess up but am running up against space issues. You help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Can I delete these if they are showing up in applications or in other places?
Yes.
When you update files do you also need to keep the previous ones?
If the update is a software update, older versions of the files updated are usually deleted. If they are document files, no.

  • Can I delete .dmg files off my iMac?

Well, the short version of the question is in the title, but I'll explain further. My iMac, my families main computer, is running out of disc space, and after googling/looking for topics on the issue, I still can't find a clean cut answer to the question "If I delete .dmg files for programs I have already install/use, will the programs become unusable/broken and will my iMac still function properly?". I ask this because, as I said, I'm running out of space and there isn't much else to delete, and I noticed the .dmg files have been taking up a ton of data. I obviously won't just delete all of them willy-nilly, but I mean can I delete ones for updates to Safari or Firefox or iTunes, or even ones for one-time downloads like MSN? Thanks in advance, I just want to be sure on the issue, so far it seems like I safely can if I have installed the application to the applications folder.

You do not have to keep the disc image files you've downloaded (.dmg files.) Doing so will simply free up space. Since the applications were downloaded from internet sources you can always redownload should you lose one.
Drag the .dmg files to the Trashcan on the Dock or select all of them and press COMMAND-DELETE to move all of them to the Trash. Now Empty the Trash to recover the disk space.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
It sometimes happens. Usually it's the result of a permissions error.
Drag the file out of the trash bin onto your desktop and then run the disk utility, found in the Utilities folder
Select and run, repair permissions and let it run - it takes up to 1/2 hour - and ignore the time-to-complete indicater - it lies
After that, see if you can now delete the .dmg.

  • .dmg files? can I delete?

When installing applications or updates on your Mac, can you delete the .dmg files?
I've installed a few freeware applications such as MSN Messenger, Lab Tick, Flip4Mac, aMSN etc... and also updates for various applications.
Once i've an application installed or updated (and working ok) can I delete the .dmg file?
I've tried to delete the .dmg file for MSN Messenger in the past only to find that it wouldn't work and I'd have to install it again, but i've deleted .dmg files for other applications (as it told me that I could delete if I wanted to after successful installation)
So what can and cannot I do with .dmg files?

    Thanks guys!
I think I had some applications installed incorrectly - when I open MSN, a white drive opend also on the desktop, and the same happened with Firefox, the white drive with a Firefox logo would appear on the desktop anytime I opened these applications.
I think this was because I didn't install some things properly, I think I may have dragged the icons to the task bar along the bottom before adding them to my applications folder. I've uninstalled some applications and reinstalled them correctly and now everything is working fine. I can also delete .dmg files now, because in the past - seeing the applications weren't installed correctly, deleting the .dmg file caused the application to partially uninstall as it was running the incorrectly installed application.
    Problem sorted!

  • Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • Can't delete MSN and Firefox .dmg files

I can't seem to delete the dmg files from MSN and Firefox after installing. I am able to send it to trash but cannot empty thereafter. Are these not just install files?

Hi, w. Welcome to the Discussions.
I presume you're seeing a warning message similar to the following when attempting to empty the Trash:The operation cannot be completed because the item "diskimagename.dmg" is in use.You have to eject the mounted disk image before you can empty the Trash if you moved the corresponding .dmg file to the Trash. I address that in point 2 below.
Here's what I suspect is happening:
    • You've download an application that is distributed on a disk image. Your browser is set to download files to your desktop. Accordingly, the disk image is saved on your desktop.
    • Your browser is set to open files it considers safe. It mounts the disk image, which also appears on your desktop. On your desktop, an unmounted disk image appears as follows:
Whereas a mounted disk image might look like this:
    • You may also be running the application on the mounted disk image, not actually installing the application.
Here's what you should do when you download an application that is distributed using a disk image:
    1. Install the application you have downloaded from the mounted disk image. Follow the installation instructions provided with the application to install it. Usually this means dragging the application's icon from the mounted disk image to your Macintosh HD > Applications folder. However, some applications are distributed for installation via an installer, either the Mac OS X installer or one bundled with the application. Again, follow the developers instructions for installing the application, often included in a "Read Me" file in the mounted disk image.
    2. After you have installed the application, Eject the mounted disk image by either:
    - Dragging its icon to the Trash.
    - Control-clicking the mounted disk image's icon and selecting "Eject" from the resulting contextual menu.
The mounted disk image's icon will disappear from the desktop.
    3. Finally, drag the disk image to the Trash to remove it from your desktop: it's no longer needed once you've installed the application.
    4. Empty the Trash.
    Good luck!

  • Delete Microsoft .dmg files?

I'm trying to free up some space and I know that some .dmg files are for downloads, but I have a microsoft .dmg file that takes up a little over 1 gb. I'm wondering if it's safe to delete it. Thanks in advance for your help!

    SalemGirl63 wrote:
Having checked the file, it is the microsoft installer (disk image).
It's still too little info. An installer for what?
Do you need that software? Is it the only copy you have?
Select the disk image, get info on it in Finder via 'File > Get info…' Does it have a 'Where From:' section within 'More info'?
That would be the web URL where you downloaded it from - you may be able to redownload it in future, but since we don't know if you have brought software from Microsoft it may be that you need the file and should back it up.
My rule for deleting anything …
if unsure make a copy on another disk for safekeeping.

  • How to recover plist files from a deleted user home directory .dmg file

Our company is starting to have our mac users authenticate against active Directory, One of the requirement is that the local mac user account short name can not be the same as the active directory account so it is necessary to remove the local users account, we do this by removing the local and turning the home directory into a .dmg file, after the user logs in with their active directory account, we mount the .dmg file and move the files over to the new home directory, However the system does not transfer over the pervious system setting such as Dock settings Desktop background setting, and plist files how do we get these setting moved also.

there is nothing else to transfer. the problem is probably related to the fact that you are using AD. I'm not familiar with it so can not comment further.

  • .dmg files, keep or delete

Exploring files today, I find .dmg files in odd places.
Not sure what to do with them.
    Thanks

    Great Thanks.
I figured they might be important.
One in question was iPhoto 801.
Quite strange, folder in random pick,
found .dmg file mixed in with a folder of mixed documents and images.
I think I better do a system search of .dmg and do as you suggested.
    Thanks

  • What is an 'SPL-2.dmg' file and how can I get it (the driver) installed?

    Please advise."
    *The reply from Samsung:*
Thank you for contacting us regarding your SCX-4200 and the recent issue you have experienced.
It is difficult to say why this error may have occurred, it may be that the file has been corrupted during transfer. You should try deleting this file again and re-downloading it or possibly even try downloading the file from an alternate location such as below -
    http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=uk&C ttFileID=2047002&CDCttType=DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=SCX-4200&VPath=DR/200810/200 81028145509765/SPL2.dmg

*Having tried all that, I did phone them, only to be fobbed off, +'Try re-installing from the CD you got with your printer. If that doesn't work it must be their ([Apple's]) problem.'+*
My MacBook is trying to mount it, according to right-click 'Get Info', using DiscImageMounter, which only returns the error message (above), 'The following disc images failed to mount - image: SPL2.dmg; reason: not recognised.' Disc Utility doesn't tell me much more. What should I do with it?
My printer (Samsung SCX-4200) clicks and warms up when it's sent a command to print, but that's the end of it - it won't do anything else, which is why I went looking for the driver in the first place. Note the Samsung Download Centre site at _http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDownDetail.do?group=printsolut ions&type=printsolutions&subtype=monomultifunctionproducts&modelnm=SCX-4200&disp_nm=SCX-4200&language=&cate_type=all&mType=DR&dType=D&vType=L&ct tID=2047002&prd_ia_cd=06010300 says this driver was updated/uploaded 28/10/2008, but I can't get the **** thing to install. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Probably also worth noting: the printer works fine with Windows on my MacBook's BootCamp partition.

  • How do you use a dmg file image to download windows through boot camp?

after reaching my limits in finding the answer to this problem/question i have, i finally decided to post it for everyone to feel my pain
so i dont know if i would be spanked or something but i downloaded a windows xp sp3 from the internet through torrent
it was originally an iso file so i changed it to a dmg by using disk utility
    now heres the problem:
after that, i opened the dmg file image and mounted the virtual drive
then when i started up the boot camp installation and clicked the "Start Installation" after about fifteen seconds it said that it couldn't find any disk installers!
    AARRGG
it would be awesome if someone could help me
and this other question that i did not mention above is:
when you run windows xp on Parallels, is it slower than when you use windows on a PC or through boot camp?
thanks and hope you have a nice day

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
so i dont know if i would be spanked or something but i downloaded a windows xp sp3 from the internet through torrent
I don't spank you for that but I also don't comment on it as maybe this post will be deleted soon !
it was originally an iso file so i changed it to a dmg by using disk utility
    now heres the problem:
after that, i opened the dmg file image and mounted the virtual drive
then when i started up the boot camp installation and clicked the "Start Installation" after about fifteen seconds it said that it couldn't find any disk installers!
The BootCamp Assistant requires Windows to be on a bootable CD/DVD and will not work with any kind of images, iso or dmg.
when you run windows xp on Parallels, is it slower than when you use windows on a PC or through boot camp?
Yes, since it is not running 'natively' , using the real hardware, but it is running on a virtualized environment.
How much slower really depends on the kind of programs you use in Windows, with typical Business/Office programs you might not even notice any slower performance, but with programs that depend on having access to the 'real' hardware, you will notice the slowness often right down to be un-useable.
thanks and hope you have a nice day
    You too

  • FYI OS 10.4.9 can't read dmg files on an external hard drive

After I upgraded from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, my G5 iMac would no longer read digital image files (dmg) stored earlier on my external hard drive. I tried various fixes from the Discussions topics. But the files would not read, giving me a: "Finder cannot complete the operation "file name XXX" ..... could not be read or written (Error code -36)".
I don't have a "fix" but I do have an inelegant solution to retrieving the files.
I plugged the hard drive into a windows XP computer (laptop) and transfered the files to a USB media reader (SD/memory stick type). The windows machine had no problem retrieving the dmg files. I then plugged the memory stick into my iMac and the iMac read the dmg files just fine.
The files are not corrupted and the disk drive obviously works, so I wonder what was different in 10.4.9 that made it quit reading the external hard drive, while still reading memory stick devices? Maybe 10.4.10 will resolve the issue.

Have u tried the usual? Safe boot. Delete finder plist files? etc. And the drives are formatted for mac yes?
