Deleting duplicate pictures

I have several pictures that are at least 6 or 7 times on my iMac when i go to the all images portion of the hard drive and was wondering if their is a way to delete them or if it is normal for them to be in multiple places. I would like to just have them in iPhoto but instead i see them under home, sites, site, my albums, pages, photo files, media and then a folder with 4 copies of each picture in the folder. Each picture is a different size and thus a different quality. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Those two or three versions of each photo which you see in the All Images section that are in the iPhoto library are normally there. When iPhoto imports a photo into the library 2 or 3 versions are created, the original, the thumbnail and a modified version if the photo is a portrait oriented photo from a camer with auto-rotate capability or you've edited the file. It's the nature of the beast.
If you think you have true duplicates imported into iPhoto, i.e. you can see duplicates when in the open iPhoto window, you can remove them in the correct manner with Duplicate Annihilator. However, I would make a backup copy of the library before running the application in case the results are not what you expected.
However, do not move, delete or rename any file or folder within the iPhoto Library package from the Finder. That will damage the library.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

How to delete duplicate pictures from Photo Library in iPhone 3G 16 giga?

The only way to delete photos from the photo library is by the same way the photos were transferred to your iPhone - via the iTunes sync process.
Are you saying a photo or all photos transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process are duplicated in your iPhone's Photo Library without being duplicated in the folder on your computer where these photos are stored?

I imported about 2600 pictures from iPhoto to Elements 11 on my iMac OS 10.8.2.  Now there are hundreds of duplicates; deleting one at a time is a real pain.  Can I identify and bulk delete duplicates in Elements 11?

Yes you can select thumbnails in the Organizer and hit delete. Then choose also delete from hard disk.
If you want to use iPhoto it’s best to set up the Elements Editor application for external editing in iPhoto preferences. That will avoid duplication on your hd. See link for notes:

  • Is there a Way to Delete Duplicate Pictures in I Photo on an I Mac Maverick OSX 10.9.2?

I have large photo files in I Photo on my new I Mac Maverick computer.  There are close to 50,000 pictures, of which probably two thirds are duplicates.
Is there some way for the computer to identify the duplicates and remove them?  I suppose I could one by one select and trash them but that seems like a formidible task.  The pictures are not all located in an orderly manner.  For some reason when the photos were moved from my old mac to the new one they organizied themselves in a manner inscrutable to my limited understanding.  Due to the way in which they are organizied, to select them manually one by one would be somewhat risky.   I would have to keep an index of each picture ID number and try and not eliminate pictures that I actually wanted to save.  Seems like the sort of things that a computer would do well.  Anyway, I'd appreciate some help.
    Thank You.

You moved them incorrectly by importing the old library into your new system. You must NEVER import an iPhoto Library. You simply connect the systems and drag the old library to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto letting it upgrade the library. There will be no duplicates and your old organization will remain exactly as it was

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

  • I have 8000  photos in my iPhoto library.  Many are duplicated in the "Pictures" folder in the Finder.  Is there an easy way to detect and delete duplicates in the "Pictures" folder?

Anyone know how to detect and delete duplicate photo files that exist in the Pictures folder in the Finder that are also in the iPhoto library?

There's no way to compare the photos in the library with those outside the library.  However, as long as you're running a "managed" library
You can import batches of the photos, i.e by folder, into the library.  If the photo is already in the library you will be given this notice:
Check that checkbox and clik on the Don't Import button.  When that folder is finished importing (or not) delete it and go to the next.
If you need to check for duplicates in the library you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.

  • Is there a way to Quickly organize, consolidate & save the Original (Pictures, Movies, etc.) yet delete all duplicate (Pictures, Movies, etc.)?

Is there a way to Quickly organize, consolidate & save the Original (Pictures, Movies, etc.) yet delete all duplicate (Pictures, Movies, etc.)?

I wanted to first thank you for this, as this is the only workaround literature that seems to be floating around out there.  With that said, I know it is a big ask, but is there any way that you could create a video showing step by step how to do what you do?  I have several tracks that are stuck in waiting mode, and if left in itunes, will never upload or match...they only cause the upload process to hang up and restart.  I've tried leaving it for days...I've tried converting the files, signing in and out of itunes (and itunes match), updating itunes match, and I tried your technique...unfortunately to no avail.  Perhaps I didn't do your technique correctly.  I used audacity to reverse the audio.
ANY help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
    Thanks

  • How to delete unwanted or duplicate pictures from photos

Trying to organize photos into albums. In doing so want to delete duplicate photos or unwanted photos. Also since I've re-organized pictures into different albums I would like to eliminate older albums.  Is this possible and if so how. I've purchased several softwares but they don't help with old pictures downloaded over a yr ago. I think this can be done through ITunes but don't know how to access for this purpose. Can you recommend best way to edit pictures and albums?

If you are reorganizing pictures that have been synced from the computer to the phone, any adjustments to those pictures has to be done on the computer and then synced back to the phone. The only photos that you can delete on the phone itself are ones that are in the Camera Roll.
Unless you have synced duplicate pictures, I think you may be referring to the fact there are pictures in an album and also in a folder that was called Pictures Library. The library folder no longer exists under iOS 7. All photo management for photos that have been synced should be handled on the computer, and then changes synced to the phone. This syncing is done in the Photos tab of iTunes.

  • I have duplicate pictures in "my catalog" that I believe come from two Adobe folders found under "my pictures/adobe/ one is Revel and the other is Photoshop express which preceded revel. Can I delete those two folder without causing a problem with my cata

I have duplicate pictures in "my catalog" that I believe come from two Adobe folders found under "my pictures/adobe/ one is Revel and the other is Photoshop express which preceded revel. Can I delete those two folder without causing a problem with my catalog?

    Thanks for the links, Limnos.
If you are willing to continue helping, here's what I found.
Just to clarify the two iTunes folders I am refering to are:
    username-->Music-->iTunes
    HD-->iTunes
I am presuming each location has a full set of files as outlined in the above links?
Not all the files are in both locations. Most are.
    - The Itunes folder in my home folder does not have itunes library.xml.
    - The Itunes folder in my home folder has a subfolder called Mobile Applications (username-->Music-->iTunes--> Mobile application). The Itunes folder at the HD level also has a Mobile Application folder but it is a subfolder of Itunes Media folder (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media-->Mobile applications) and has no files in it.
    - I do not have an iTunes Media in the iTunes folder in my home folder.
    - also the Itunes media folder (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media) has subfolders by type (books, movies, itunes u, music etc...) but the iTunes Media-->Music also has some of the same subfolders ( iTunes Media-->Music-->books, iTunes Media-->Music-->Movies, iTunes Media-->Music-->iTunes U). Is this normal repetition?
    You say:
    /itunes/itunes media/ music
but it is important to note what comes before all that.
There is nothing as far as I can tell before that first forward slash. Since the only iTunes Media folder I have is in the iTunes folder that resides at the HD level (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media folder) not the iTunes folder in my home folder (username-->Music-->iTunes) , I assume that's the one that holds the music.
Keep iTunes media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are both checked on
Does that give more clarity into my problem?

  • How can i delete the duplicate pictures and movie clips on my macbook pro

how can i delete all the duplicate pictures and movie clips on my macbook pro. it is telling me i have no memory

By 'no memory' may I assume you are out of space on your hard drive?
Obviously you can delete them one by one, but this is tedious and will take a long time and you wish to do this quickly and efficiently.
This is my suggestion and it may not be worth a lot:
If all of your duplicates have a unique characteristic common to them that the originals do not, this MIGHT work.  For example if you make a duplicate of an image, it will have the same title as the original, but will insert the word 'copy' in its' title.  (It should do some thing similar with movie clips).
Go to Spotlight in System Preferences.  Click on Privacy (near the top of the pane) and then the + sign (near the lower left hand corner).  This will result in a drop down menu.  Select all the places you do not want Spotlight to search.  You should leave only Music and Movies unless you have pictures/movie clips in other places.
Enter into spotlight the unique characteristic (ie; copy) and it should (I hope) list all your duplicates.  Perform a Select All, and put them in Trash.
Otherwise do them one by one or write an Apple Script Program.
If my convoluted idea does not work, perhaps you will be lucky and a more savvy person with a real solution will come forth!
    Caio.
