Deleting duplicate songs, deleting duplicate songs

When you ask itunes to extract duplicates so that you can delete them... it usually populates on a page the same song 2-3 times... do you just have to select all and delte or do you have to keep one and delete the rest ....coz that process can be long...?

Picking which copy to keep is based on a lot of personal preferences.  Do you want to "destroy" albums so that some albums only half their songs?  That only matters if you want to enjoy an album the way the artist created it.
I'm keeping mine all together and I mark duplictes that I don't want to hear in the BPM column, which I don't use for anything.  All dupes have 888 beats per minute.  I then create a smart playlist containing all the songs in my library unless they have 888 bpm.  That playlist will contain no duplicates.
Are you interested in audio quality?  Do you want to keep the loudest copy?  Do you want to keep the copy that has more dynamic range.  Older songs have more dynamic range.  When they get "remastered" they usually get compressed so they are louder and have less dynamic range.  You can determine this quality by opening them in the free audio editor, Audacity, and examining their waveforms.  It's a lot of trouble, but you'll be surprised at what some songs look like!  It's up to you if you want to spend some time and keep the copy that you think sounds best.
It's a one song at a time precess, no matter what you do.

i tried to delete all of my duplicate songs in iTunes and it deleted all of my music. Is there a way i get my music back?

From the backup you maintain in case something drastic happens to your collection as it surely will when your drive crashes, the computer is stolen, etc.?
Are the files in the trash?  I don't let iTunes manage my music so when I delete a track I have to hunt down the file, drag it to the trash, and empty the trash in order to get rid of it.  I don't know how iTunes does it for others.

How are multiple duplicate songs deleted from albums?  I've followed iTunes Help instructions but wasn't successful.  I command clicked the duplicate songs to select them, and pressed  "delete" on the keyboard, but nothing happened.  I also tried dragging the selections to tht Trash Bin to no avail. I'm sure that the album is not part of a Smart Playlist since i just impoted the songs.  Would appreciate any and all suggestions

On my iTunes I am unable to delete any songs from my iPhone, nor am I able to select the 'Display Duplicates' or Delete them either. I can't even rename a song!
Things I have tried for deleting songs:
    Shift+CTRL+Delete
    Delete button
Looking under settings on both my iPhone and iTunes for an option to enable the above problems in the opening
I have deleted the songs in both the downloads folder that my songs go to, and from the iTunes music (This deleted the songs from that but not my actual iPhone music).
Right Clicking the song and looking for delete option (no such option exists under the 'Devices' portion of iTunes)
Things I have tried for duplicate songs:
Right clicking the song and looking for delete option (again no such option exists)
Tried clicking the 'Display Duplicate' option but iTunes has it blocked and I am unable to click it (faded grey colour)
Things I have tried for renaming songs:
Right clicking the song>Get Info>Info and I can't click on anything it's all blocked
Double clicking song title still unable to edit the song like I used to be able to do in previous iTunes
    Triple clicking song title
Hoping someone can help me with these issues as this is very frustrating,

If your iPhone syncs with iTunes you need to tidy up in iTunes, then sync, not try to edit the content of the iPhone manually within iTunes.
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background.
If the device has duplicates, but iTunes doesn't, then you can swipe and delete all duplicated items directly on the iPhone, then sync with iTunes to put the songs back onto the device. One of the iTunes build seem to have the potential to leave orphaned tracks on the device which are then not cleared up by further syncing.

  • HT1349 Due to backing up my itunes on an external 1 terrabite hard drive, I now have duplicates of the same song in my library.  Anyone know how to run something to remove duplicates?  It's taking up too much space on my hard drive.

Is there something I can run to remove duplicate songs from my itunes library.  This occurred when I backed my itunes library up on an external hard drive, now I have multiple duplicates of the same songs.  HELP!

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Duplicates AFTER deleting the DUPLICATES~!~~~~!!!!!  SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?

I've spent DAYS....actually a couple weeks deleting over 50G of duplicate content. Then I transferred everything over to an external HD so that I would have ONE large HD that held everything. And whaddaya know.....all the songs that I'd initially deleted the extra copy of....on the hard drive NOW have an upwards of 3 extra copies. AND...when I reinstalled Itunes and attempted to re-import the songs into iTunes, iTunes showed up to an extra 8 copies.
    WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!?
thanks for the help in advance.

Do all of the duplicate songs play or does it not allow you to play them? I would try to look in the folder where your compture has stored these songs and see if there are duplicates in there. If so I'd delete them so my library couldn't find them either, then go back into the library play the duplicates whichever ones don't allow you to play, are the ones you deleted from your compt, then delete them from your library.
Otherwise, you could purchase a program called transipod, which allows you to take songs from your ipod and put them on your compt. Create a new Library, then just add the songs from your ipod. The only problem is it doesnt allow songs that have the same name for all of them to be transfered it only picks one for some reason... But I hope this helped if not i wish you the best of luck!

  • Delete multiple itunes music duplicates

my itunes music library has duplicates of almost every song. how can I clean this up in mass? one at a time is not an option

It depends upon your level of trust in automatically getting rid of duplicates.  You can have duplicates that are not duplicates, which is when going through them one by one, looking at file and track details, is better.  Automatic deleting can be fatal to your collection if your duplicates in fact point to the same file.  Deleting one will get rid of the file and after you finish deleting the files your "originals" will show up with broken links.  I also have a duplicate that is the artist having two tracks on the same album with an identical name, but they definitely are not the same (one is acoustic, the other heavy rock).  iTunes tells me they are duplicates so if I blindly get rid of duplicates I will get rid of one of those tracks.
If this happened recently thrugh some action you can try viewing exact duplicates, sorting by date added, and delete every file added after a certain date.  There's also various commercial and shareware duplicate finders which you can find through a web search.
You must be doing something wrong with iTunes to be generating that number of duplicates.  I generate only one or two duplicates per year despite lots of file creation and deletion.

  • For the past five weeks, iCloud has not recognized my automatically downloaded song purchases as songs within iCloud. After the songs download, they appear with the ominous striked out cloud next to a duplicate with the download cloud.

For the past five weeks, iCloud has not recognized my automatically downloaded song purchases as songs within iCloud. After the songs download, they appear with the ominous striked out cloud next to a duplicate song with download cloud. To get a fully functional song library that I can use to iCloud playlists and use all the other wonderful features of iCloud, I have to delete the automatic downloads and download the new version by clicking on the iCloud download icon. This is tedious. I have considered just turning off automatic downloads, but I rely heavily on my television shows downloading while I'm asleep and being ready to watch when I wake up.
If anyone has a solution, I would greatly appreciate your help. I'm sure I did something to goof it up.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,
I'm receiving the information that "No backups available.", but if i log in my icloud I find the backup.
    What can I do?

  • To delete a song from itunes i right click on the song, delete, click on move file to recycle bin, clear the recycle bin but the music is still in my itunes music folder? how do i delete it from itunes and the folder?

Because when i back my computer up all of the music i have tried to delete hasnt been deleted properly so everything is backed up HELP!!!! Please

    Short answer:
Click Hide Song(s), it is what you wanted to do...
    Long answer:
iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

  • I am trying to delete a large number of songs from my Itunes library without having to delete them one at a time.  How do I do that?

I am trying to delete a large number of songs from my itunes library without having to do it one at a time.  How can I do this.  All of my songs have check marks by them.  Help!

Then I suspect you do not have iTunes Match enabled. Using that "delete all" command in the Settings does not remove the music from the cloud, nor does it disable iTunes Match. With iTunes Match enabled you will still see all the music.
So go to Settings > iTunes and App Store and make sure iTunes Match is set to ON (green).

  • HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command.

HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command. Thanks.

If you select all the songs you want to change, Be it one song or an akbum, or an Artist, Or Genre, or playlist. Then Right mouse click  and Get Info. You then get a slightly different from normal Get Info box as this is the One for Multiple items.
In there have a look at the tags and see if the one you want to changes is in there. There are a few tabs so if for example you wanted to change the Media Type from Home Movie to Movie go to the Options tab and select Movie and OK and it will change the whole selection.

  • I have two 2nd generation iPods and iTunes will no longer let me delete songs (Delete in gray)?

I have two 2nd generation iPods and iTunes will no longer let me delete music from either one. If I select a song, "Delete" is gray in the menu and cannot be selected. What's happened? New iTunes not compatible?

In order to manually remove music from the iPod via iTunes, you need to have the Manually manage music and videos option checked from under each iPod's Summary tab.

I just dled Itunes onto my new laptop, when I synced with my music folder, all of the songs were duplicate on song list, what do I do? What did I do wrong, and where do I find a manual to learn how to use ITunes???

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • How do i create a duplicate of an itunes song

    Hello,
    I'm spinning iTunes 10.5.2.
I am attempting to create playlists of songs from concerts (mostly metal) that I had attended over the years and am having no problems creating the playlists.
However, my troubleshooting issue is that I also want the songs in my concert playlists to go in order of how they were performed at the concerts. Each time I number them within the playlists the song's number also changes within the Library Music list. My troubleshooting thought is that if I can create a duplicate of the song and then added the duplicated song to my concert playlist I could number each song individually.
However, I can not figure out how to make true copy. I've already tried dragging the song to my desktop, then dragging the new copy back into iTunes. I've even tried renaming the duplicate copy and dragging it into iTunes. Why won't my iTunes make an individual duplicate copy of a song?

    Give them a track number.

And?  I'm not seeing the problem.

How do you have iTunes manage your music?  If you drag a song to the desktop it may just be moving the file to the desktop.
Command+R to reveal the file in Finder.  Command+D to duplicate the file in Finder. Drag the duplicate to iTunes to add the second copy.  Not that I totally understand where the issues lie and feel this is likely not the best remedy...
