Deleting files in my iTunes

I would like to delete the music that I have in my "recently added" folder in iTunes without deleting the content from the playlists that I have moved the songs to.  The only option I could find not only deleted the songs from my "recently added" folder but also from my playlists as well.  Guess I am asking how to clear the recently added folder and leave the songs in my playlists.

Right now when I impost songs/audio  the only place I can find them is in my Recently Added smartlist.  I'll create a playlist and go to recently added and click/drag them to my new playlist.  When I have a lot of different audio files in recently added it becomes difficult for me to identify the new audio that I just created a playlist for.
Lots of the audios don't come in in a sequence and they can be scattered throughout the recently added list.  I realize there must be a better way for me to do this but not being very good at understanding this stuff it becomes a big challenge.
I also realized that when I say I am importing songs or audio I am actually importing audio lectures on eastern philosophy.  I presume this is no different than importing a song.  Correct?
Most of the audios I get are in MP3 format and they don't seem to present any problem.  I also get WAV files and sometimes they are imported to iTunes with no problem.  Other times the import just doesn't work.

  • How can i delete files not in itunes easily?

i have a lot of music saved on my computer which i dont have in itunes. i dont listen to it and want to get rid of it to free up some space. is there any way of doing this without going through each individual folder?

    This may help you.
First, you probably now know that there is a difference between deleting the music file from iTunes and completely deleting it. You should have gotten a message from iTunes asking if you want to send the file to the recycle bin. Choosing yes will delete the file from iTunes AND the directory. It will reside in the recycle bin until you empty it. This is the best way to manage your files if you really want them permanently deleted.
Now here's my tested method: It will depend on how many directories and songs you have in the "Compilations" directory in the "iTunes Music" directory. If you have quite a bit, this may become complicated (although it might not matter, anyhow – if you are careful and deliberate).
If you can take a screenshot of what is in the Compilations Folder, it would help you later to manage it back to its original state.
If you select all your current Library song references (they're all good - right?) - either in total or in piece-part, right-click to "Get Info" and tick off the "Part of Compilation" box and set it to "Yes", iTunes "should" re-order those songs out of their respective directories and into the compilations directory - leaving any unwanted songs behind (or at least song files that are not referenced within iTunes). Confirm that these are files you no longer need.
You can then mass delete the full directories to remove the unwanted songs. After doing this, you would reverse the first procedure, turning the compilations selection back to "No". iTunes will re-re-order the songs back to individual Artist/Album directories, re-creating any needed folders as it progresses.
You should be able to test this out with just one Artist's songs. Pick an artist that you know has several to many "bad" songs in the sub-directory structure. Try a step-wise progression through the above process (looking at the results via Windows Explorer) and see what is happening. If it doesn't work right, you haven't changed that much of you data in the process. If it works, then select more and more groupings of songs and proceed en-mass.
Probably best to sort your main library by artist prior to doing any of this so you are sure to select all necessary songs.
If your songs are not organized that carefully, this may not work. Having iTunes organize your Library is essential to this process. Looking at my directory structure, and with the experiments I performed, it does work for me.
Have backups of your good song data somewhere prior to attempting this solo.
You should perform this process from the main Library, not a playlist.
Here is what I have in my Preferences (Advanced/General):
--- Keep iTunes Music folder organized (on)
--- Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library (off)
Make sure that the location of your Music folder (shown in the "Advanced" tab) is the same location that you are adjusting.

  • ITunes will not delete file (after confirming & sending to recycle bin)

Files deleted within iTunes do not disappear from my hard drive.
I answer "Are you sure you want to remove the selected podcast from your iTunes library" and select the "Remove" button.
I then answer "Do you want to move the selected podcasts to the Recycle Bin, or keep them in the iTunes Music folder?" with "Move to Recycle Bin".
Music files (mp3) occasionally delete properly but video podcasts (Geek Brief to be specific) will not delete.
Music is stored in J:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music which is slightly non-standard but seems to fit the rule of being "inside" the iTunes folder.
Any ideas? [I've seen similar but not quite the same posts where people are trying to delete files outside the iTunes folders......]

I too have this same problem with deleting video podcasts. The problem doesn't happen all the time, but probably a majority of the time. It is quite annoying as many of the video podcasts I subscribe to are in HD format so it is rather frustrating to have to manually delete them from the iTunes folder after deleting them thru iTunes, but since they take up gigs of space it is necessary to go in and clean them out every once in a while.

  • How do I delete files on my PC but save them in my ipod

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I've just bought a fifth generation ipod and I'm very much a newbie. I understand that the ipod automatically updates itself when I connect it to Itunes.
If I delete files completely from Itunes and my hard drive to save space, but want to keep the tracks on my ipod, how do I prevent them being from being deleted from the ipod when I reconnect it to Itunes?
I know it's something to do with the 'synchronisation'. I've tried to find something on the 'help' information pages but I just can't get my head around it! Thanks.
Evesham   Windows XP   Service Pack 2

Connect you ipod to your computer and then in the ipod settings select to manually manage your ipod, then when you connect you ipod you just add new songs to your ipod yourself and songs you have removed off your hard drive will stay on you ipod. BEWARE if you restore your ipod you will lose the songs you have deleted off your hard drive

  • HT203200 Cannot delete the file from the itunes folder

I cannont delete the file from the itunes folder because it tells me I need permission to do so.  I am the admin person for the laptop plus I have checked my permissions under the security tab in the files properties.  How do I delete this file to start again?  It downloaded 1.2GB of the file before the error message appeared, so its paid for and all but not looking like I'll get to watch it before the time runs out on the movie being available for me to watch. :-(

Try deleting the file without iTunes running.
When you next open iTunes it should then be marked as a missing file and you should be able to delete the entry from iTunes.
    Hope this works

  • Add mp3 to iTunes, delete file from Downloads, add Comment?

I'm trying to make a folder action that will:
    - Watch my 'Downloads' folder for downloaded .mp3 files.
    - Add those .mp3 files to iTunes, letting iTunes copy to music folder.
    - Delete the original file from the 'Downloads' folder.
    - In iTunes, append '#single' to the Comment field of added .mp3.
So far I have the first three working, but cannot get it to append the #single part to the Comment field, here's what I have:
    property myFiletypes : {".mp3"}
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    set myFinderItems to added_items
    tell application "System Events"
set allItems to every item of myFinderItems
    end tell
repeat with i from 1 to the count of allItems
    try
    -- get an item
set myFinderItem to (item i of allItems as alias)
-- check if it is a folder
tell application "Finder" to set myItemIsFolder to (kind of myFinderItem = "Folder")
    -- if it isn't a folder...
    if myItemIsFolder is false then
-- see if the file has the right extension
tell application "Finder" to set myItemExtension to "." & (name extension of myFinderItem) as string
    if myFiletypes contains myItemExtension then
set mySongName to myFinderItem as alias
    -- add track to iTunes
    tell application "iTunes"
    add mySongName
    end tell
tell application "Finder" to delete file myFinderItem
    end if
    end if
    on error
    display dialog "Error"
    end try
    end repeat
    end adding folder items to

Better yet, an Applescript that can be used as a folder action to watch the Downloads folder and:
    1) Open .mp3s in iTunes and append #single to track Comments, then delete original .mp3s.
    2) Open .zip and .rar archives, parse then unarchived folder for .mp3 files, add them to iTunes, append #album to track Comments, then delete original folder of .mp3s.
2a) Bonus points if the script adds the .mp3s to itunes in descending order based on file name track numbers (track 10, track 9, track 8...).

  • Cannot Delete File - iTunes Hangs/Freezes

    Hello,
I have an old file in my iTunes Library which I am trying to delete. Every time I select it however, I get the spinning ball and iTunes freezes. I have trashed the file from the hard drive but it is still showing up in the iTunes window and again, when I select it, it freezes. All other files play fine. Thoughts?

  • Can't delete files from iTunes File Sharing

    iPad, IOS 8.1.3
    MacBook Pro Retina, OS 10.10.2
    iTunes, v12.1
I'm trying to delete files from iTunes. In this instance, I have files I made in Pages, via my iPad, I have learned how to move them to my computer without using iCloud, which I prefer. Now I can't get them off of the iTunes app on my computer.
I have deleted them from my iPad and from my computer but they are still in the iTunes app on my computer. To see these one must plug the iPad into the computer. When iTunes, on the computer, opens, choose Apps from the side bar, (under settings), scroll down to File Sharing, pick the app, in this case Pages and there is a list of all the files, (docs), still on the computer, within iTunes.
If i drag one of the files to the desk top on my computer and clic on it it will open. This is true for any of the apps under File Sharing.
This seems very insecure to me and it also appears to take up space on my iPad.
Anyone know how to get rid of these files?

    Hi,
I had an orhpanded link to a networkshare which does not exist anymore. With the "cmd" key pressed down I was able to dump the favorite to the trash.
    Thank you.

  • "iTunes Media" file in "Previous iTunes Library" taking up 50Gb of much-needed hard drive space.  Can this be safely deleted?

    Hi everyone,
My 3.5 year old 15" Macbook Pro is running out of hard drive space, so I have been trying to clean out some of the dross.  I recently found that there is a file called "Previous iTunes Library" in my iTunes folder that is taking up approximately 50Gb of space.   I would love to delete this folder and reclaim the space, but I am not sure what it is or where it came from, and I don't want to lose music files accidentally. Can someone tell me (1) what this folder is and (2) if I can safely delete it?
Here is a screenshot of these folders and their sizes:
    Thanks for the help!

    Hello facetious1212,
Take a look at this part of the article named iTunes: What are the iTunes library files? Found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1660.
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • ITunes 10.3.1 freezes when I try to delete files I have ripped from my own CDs.

I am in the process of updating a number of CDs that I ripped at 128kbps with rips at 256kbps.  When I delete the 128kbps files most of the time iTunes 10.3.1 freezes with the spinning beach ball.  The files are in the trash but I have to force quit iTunes.  When I restart iTunes, the deleted files are still visible and playable and I can know delete these without any issues.
I have tried turning off my external OWC Mercury Pro Blu-ray/DVD/CD burner but this has no effect.

I have the same issue.  I took it the genius bar and called talked to tier 2 phone support. They have standard thing where you uninstall all apple software in a certain order and then reinstall 64bit itunes.  That did nothing (tried it 4 times).
I've gotten two clues so far.
One is that at the store if I plug someone else's iphone 4 in then itunes acts the same way. So it is not the phone. Two is tier 2 phone support told me to try syncing it with a fresh user account (an admin one). I did that and itunes was just fine, it did not freeze.
So there appears to be some conflict with the software, music files, whatever that is on my current user account (also an admin account).  I ran virus and malware detectors and found nothing.  Now I'm going to try putting my music, movies, apps, etc in the new user account and see if the phone will sync then.
I know its not much but thats where I'm at. I hope it helps.

  • I delete an album in itunes, and select "move to the recycle bin" the track files in itunes library get moved but the album folder stays-with nothing in it.

How do I get the album folder to move to the rcycle bin also? I have keep folders updated checked in preferences.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try deleting the problematic tune (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option at the bottom of the screen of the iTunes app on your iOS device.
If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.

  • Can't delete files in iTunes 10.4 (80) OS 10.7 Delete in the edit menu is not hi-lighted?

Can't delete files in iTunes 10.4 (80) OS 10.7 Delete in the edit menu is not hi-lighted. Any sugestions? I have three Mac's and they all have the same problem.

Gmatos, when I high-light and drag file from iTunes to my trash the usual promt of "do I want to remove it" followed by by the uual "do I want to keep the file or remove that from my library" comes up too. I click "dont keep file" and it is gone from my itunes and my library an my HD. It's exactly the same as it's always been except annoyingly this is the only way I can do it as the delete button just doesn't work in this latest version.
Hope this is clearer for you.

    Hi,
I want to delete duplicates from my iTunes music but and iTunes help says to click on "Display Exact Duplicates" in File men but I don't appear to have this function.  Where else can I look?

Thanks Kappy. I had just found it but thanks reply.  Next question is:  Is there a quick way to then delete the duplicates without having to select each one and delete?
