Deleting from USB does not free up space

I have a USB flash memory drive and when I delete files from it for some reason the space that the file used is not freed up. For example if I delete a file that is 6MB it will still say that 6MB is in use even though I have deleted it. I exchanged the drive for a different one but I am having the same problem with the new one. Any suggestions (other than going in to disk utility every time to erase the whole thing)?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I got this far, too. I emptied the trash and the 'get info' for a SanDisk USB flash drive shows that it is empty (249.7 MB available). When I tried to load 103 photos all at once I get the "not enough space" message. When I load the files in increments of 5-10 files it works up to a point and then I get the "not enough free space" message, when I try to load one more file. This is after I've loaded about 103 MB onto the drive. Yet, when I 'get info' on the flash drive it shows plenty of space still available.
I have even checked the USB flash drive on a windows machine as well and it also indicates the same amount of free space.
Any suggestions?

  • Exfat drive does not free up space after deleting files

    My external exfat formatted drive does not free up space after deleting files using a mac....however if I delete files using a PC, it will free up space.
    I've even tried the *erase free space* using Disk Utility, but nothing.....
    Thoughts/Suggestions??

    Thanks for the suggestion.
    I ran WhatSize and here is the result. Oddly, it says there is 40.2 GB used (in the top-left) which conflicts with the information directly below it: "Capacity 108 GB, Used 103GB, Available 4.27 GB". Not so helpful.
    Disk Inventory X solved the problem, however. Much thanks! I wasted most of my weekend troubleshooting this sad issue. Anyway, Disk Inventory X revealed a bug where my external hard drive for photos was still appearing as a mounted volume, even though the HD was no longer connected. Freaky.
    After moving it to the trash and deleting it, I've recovered the space.
    Again, thanks! Contact me if you're curious about the details, as this might help you diagnose similar problems in the future.

  • Deleting videos does not free up space

    I recently recorded a handful of videos (about 15 minutes worth) that brought my iPhone to full capacity. I deleted them, but didn't notice much space getting cleared up. I needed to record some more videos last night, and noticed I did not have enough space, so I connected to iTunes and unchecked "sync all music" to remove my music from the phone. This freed up about 1.5 gigs of space, enough to record what I needed. I noted at this time in my settings under Usage, that my "Photos and Camera" was listing 3.1 GB. I recorded the videos I needed, synced them to my computer, and deleted them, but now I'm still seeing my "Photos & Camera" as 5.1 GB, and I no longer have any free space, and cannot put my music back on my phone.
    I have double checked to make sure they are stuck in iCloud somewhere (My Photo Stream is turned off) and I have quit the Photos and Camera applications, done a Soft Reset, synced with iTunes, but to no avail, I can't seem to get my space back! I couldn't find anyone else having the same issue, but it was hard to find search words that didn't turn up posts about upgrading iOS (which I also need to do!).
    Is this a known issue? Is there any way to do a trash collection on the iPhone that will clear up unlinked memory? It's quite a bit of a problem for me to not have any more available space on my Phone even though I deleted the things that were previously taking it up!

    Go back into the "Photos" app. Go to "Albums".   Are your videos etc  still sitting there in "Recently deleted" ?   If they are - delete them from there too.

  • Delete from Q10 does not delete from Outlook

    After the 10.2.1.537 update I just did this weekend, my emails are no longer deleting from Outlook (work Exchange account). I deleted a few emails over the weekend, and when loading up Outlook this morning at work the emails are still in my Inbox.
    I have made sure that 'Delete on Mailbox & Handheld' is ON and I have never had an issue with this before the update.
    Any help would be greately appreciated.

    I have had the same problem since the update yesterday. I have both an Outlook and Yahoo mail accounts and neither will allow me to delete from the BB Hub. I receive a popup that asks if I would always like to perform this action. No matter if I select it or not the 'Delete' button does not become accessible.
    Dear Blackberry folks, how can I delete my emails??
    Go into your Settings and reduce the font size to something less than 12.  Then go back to the Hub and try deleting again.  You should be able to make the selections.  If you set one or the other to default then you can change your font size back.

  • Deleting from library does not delete from hard drive????

    itunes support states when deleting from library, it should prompt to remove from hard drive. i am not getting this prompt. i cannot find a setting that changes this either. please advise
    thanks,

    It only deletes it from the hard drive if it is in the iTunes Music folder path;
    Look at your itunes menu > Edit > Preferences >Advanced tab.
    "itunes music folder location"
    For example, say it is set to C:/Music. If you delete a file from the itunes library list that exists in C:/Music you'll get asked if you want to keep or delete the file.
    If you delete a file from the itunes library lists that exists in C:/SomeOtherFolder, it will not get deleted from the hard drive.

  • Deleting IM and mail messages does not free up space

    I have a 250mb of available storage on my iphone 5.  My big usages are in Photos& Camera (3.8GB), Messages (2.6GB), Music (1.3 GB), and Mail (1 GB).  I've deleted all my sent and trash emails, many pictures and videos, and almost all of my text/IM messages.  But, the amount of space occupied by these apps NEVER goes down! No matter what I deleted, the storage usage by these apps stays the same!!  Help!

    I exchange short videos of golf swings and pics on IM and email as well.  But most of these have all been deleted.  The problem is that no matter what I delete no space is freed up.

    Early 2011 Mac book pro running 10.9.4. Deleting iPhoto files does not create additional space.  iPhoto is about 160gb, iTunes which I use for viewing slideshows remotely is about 135gb.

    Thanks for the reply.  Have now changed from Mavericks to Yosemite and now it appears to be working as it should.  Will post again after some experimentation

    i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

    Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

    Yes. That is exactly what you need to be doing on  regular basis.
    Import the photos to your computer.
    Either via syncing with computer or using iCloud Control Panel (Windows) or iPhoto (Mac).
    -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
    After you import the photos, delete them from Photo Stream/Camera Roll.
    You can sync the photos you want on your iPhone back to the iPhone using iTunes. (These photos are not part of the iPhone backup)

    I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
    I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
    Thanks for your interest and advice.

    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
    from the contextual menu. An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.

  • Delete AUD$ table do not free space

    Hi,
    We have an Oracle 10g database (10.2.0.4) with the Oracle auditing feature on.
    Our problem is that I delete on regular basis the AUD$ rows, but the system do not free the space on the tablespace. The system free the space only after a truncate.
    The actual situation is:
    SQL> select segment_name,bytes/1024/1024 as Mb from dba_segments where bytes/1024/1024 > 1000 and TABLESPACE_NAME='SYSTEM';
    SEGMENT_NAME                                                                              MB
    AUD$                                                                                             10161
    SQL> select count(*) from sys.aud$;
    COUNT(*)
    +1073+
    Someone can help me with this!?
    The delete of the table is done with a simple script:
    select count(*) from sys.aud$;
    delete from sys.aud$ where NTIMESTAMP# < sysdate -(1/24*6);
    select count(*) from sys.aud$;
    commit;
    exit;
    Thanks

    Hi,

    The scrink and the coalesce feature do not works:
    SQL> alter table SYS.AUD$ enable row movement;

    alter table SYS.AUD$ coalesce;
    Table altered.
    SQL> SQL> alter table SYS.AUD$ shrink space

    SQL> SQL> alter table SYS.AUD$ coalesce

    ORA-01735: invalid ALTER TABLE optionthe only way I have is to move the table in a different tablespace and in case move back.
    Do you know if that is a know bug!?No it is not a bug.
    Why are you concerned about the space being released? If it were you'd just have to re-aquire it as new rows are added to the table.
    As rows are added, when an extent is filled a new extent is allocated. If rows are deleted those extents remain allocated to the table and are re-used as needed. The aud$ table is a perfect example of a table which most definately will need to reuse that space, so it it a total waste of effor to try to reclaim it.Hi, that is the real point, it seems that the table don't use the allocated space.
    It constantly grows and reclaim new space. That is the real problem for me.You haven't demonstrated that. You only showed us a one-time snapshot of the space used and the row count.
    You need to track this over several days / iterations of deleting rows. Show us that over a period of time the row count is fairly stable and yet the space used continues to increase.
    If, today the rowcount is 'x' and the space allocated (measured in blocks or extents) is 'y', and you delete a bunch (or even all) rows, space allocated should remain 'y'. Then tomorrow, you should have near 'x' rows again (assuming a fairly level amount of audited activity). And space allocated should still be 'y' .. maybe allowing for a slight increase in 'x' triggering one more extent. But if you are regularly pruning the row count, the number of extents should stabilize. If not, then you do have an issue, but I haven't yet seen proof of that happening.

    Can this create problems since AUD$ is a system table!?No, but you don't want a very active table like that in your SYSTEM tablespace. Oracle puts it there by default, but there have been well known procedures on the net for YEARS on how to move it to another TS. Thanks
    With 11g, they've even introduced the dbms_audit_management package to help with these tasks.I know, I hope the my customer will authorize the upgrade soon.
    Thanks for your suggestion to upgrade sybrand_b, but as you can understand, sometime the upgrade are not possible until the software vendor will authorize that, so, we need to work on version 10.2.0.4 for some other months.
    Regards
    Nunzio
    P.S. I think that there are problems, after the move of the table to a different tablespace, and the move back to SYSTEM, the used space was around 2Gb, but I was not able to resize the datafile. Don't move it back. Get it out of SYSTEM and leave it there.I think that I'll do this, at least to not risk the corruption of the system tablespace.
    Thanks again for your answers.

    Before you delete, find out if you'll be able to download the song you deleted again (it depends on where you live). To delete a song:
    Tap the Music app.
    Tap the Songs category.
    Swipe left to right over the song you want to delete.
    Tap Delete.

    Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
    On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later even if you don’t have a network connection. Apple TV only streams songs.

    What happens if i delete an old backup from my iCloud to free up space?

    Nothing. You will lose that backup but you will still be able to make backups in the future if you want to. You can also remove things you do not need from the backup, so you do not have to lose everything from your backup.
