Deleting hand-me-down devices off iCloud backup

i've handed down my past iphones to kids.  now it appears those devices are taking up storage on my icloud.  if delete the devices off my icloud, will the backed up information (photos, etc) go away too?

Deleting the backup from iCloud will only permanently delete the backup.  It won't delete any data currently in your iCloud account or on your device (other than the backup).

Do you have any backup at all for your device? If you do, then you can restore from that backup and get any photos that were on it. If you have imported your photos to your computer, you can sync them back to your device via an iTunes sync. If you had Photo Stream turned on, you can recover your Photo Stream for the last 30 days or 1000 photos on that Photo Stream (whichever comes first) by signing onto the iCloud account that the Photo Stream was turned on for.

  • TS4036 I accidentally removed my iPhone  device from icloud backup, how do I get it back

I was trying to clean up my backup as a message told me I was getting close to full. I accidentally removed my iPhone off iCloud backup. Can someone tell me how to get it back on please

Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, turn iCloud Backup to On to start backing up to iCloud again.  If your device isn't listed under Backups, you don't have one.  To see it listed again, create an iCloud backup, either by connect to your charger and wifi, locking the screen and waiting; or by tapping Back Up Now.

  • Can I turn off iCloud backup and keep my old backup?

Basically I am sick of being asked for money for more storage space. I cannot seem to get my iPhone backup under the 5gb free space, so the only option I see is to turn off iCloud backup. Can I do this without deleting the old (original) backup?

No.  When you turn it off it removes your existing backup.  You'll have to back up to your computer using iTunes (after turning off iCloud backup it will automatically back up when you sync).

When you switch to iTunes backups, the device will start to make any further backups to iTunes on your computer. It will only do this when it is connected to iTunes and a power source. (If it is set to sync/backup wirelessly, it will only do so when it is connected to a Wi-Fi network)
When you switch back to iCloud backups, it will basically resume where it left off and start to back up once again to iCloud. There is no moving of backup files between iTunes and the cloud when you switch between backup options.

  • TS3992 on iPad: How can I delete my Mail storage from my iCloud backup?

on iPad: How can I delete my Mail storage from my iCloud backup?

Did anyone ever provide a resolution, because I am having the same problem.
My iCloud backup said yesterday that over 500 MB was being used by the Mail portion of the backup. So I went into iCloud.com, deleted all of the mail in my Sent Mail folder, then emptied the trash entirely. When I did that, it got worse; it said that 1.2 GB of the iCloud backup was taken up by the Mail backup. That doesn't make any sense. That is actually the opposite of what was supposed to happen.
Today, it is back to saying that Mail takes up 609.4 MB of space in the backup, but there is next-to-nothing in any of my iCloud email folders. What is going on?
Any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does turning off iCloud backup delete backup

I am thinking of making a monthly backup of my devices in iCloud as I still prefer (sorry) to use iTunes on my PC. The idea is to have the previous  months backup available in iCloud should any problem occur.
If I backup to iCloud and then revert to backing up using itunes on my PC between iCloud backups does this delete the iCloud backup after a certain time period?
    Thanks

    Hello antdude,
turning off iCloud  wouldn't affect any of your locally stored documents. Just turn the feature off by opening System Preferences > iCloud.
Oh OK. The message was confusing me: http://i.imgur.com/kZOu5zr.png ... It sounded like disabling iCloud would delete my Mac's local copies.

  • Effect of turning off  iCloud Backup

I'm preparing to update to iOS 7 on iPhone. I'm backed up on iCloud. When I turn iCloud Backup OFF (at Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > [Backup] iCloud Backup) am I correct in assuming that only disconnects my device from iCloud? In other words, it doesn't delete or otherwise alter the backup data maintained in my iCloud account for that device?

It does not disconnect your device from iCloud. It simply means it will not back up to iCloud. Anything turned on in the iCloud settings (Settings > iCloud) will all continue to sync.

  • Transferring and Deleting photos from iOs Devices with iCloud Photo Library

So when there was iPhoto for iOs, it was easy to transfer the folders that I made on my iOs device and then delete those photos using iPhoto for iOs. Now it doesn't seem that easy (when you have a ton of photos on the device.) So has anyone found an easy way to transfer all the photos from a folder and then delete all those photos off of the device once they are transferred?

Regardless about what else is going on here or the questions you have -- the absolute first thing to know is that if you choose to use "iCloud Photo Library" then you are a "beta tester" who is using a beta service ... namely one that is NOT RELEASED as final or stable. In other words, you cannot depend on it working or keeping your photos.
THEN the other thing you should realize is that if you use this beta service, then you have turned off your "iCloud Backup" for all yours photos. In other words iCloud will NO LONGER back up your photos.
All in all the above means that BEFORE you even attempt to use iCloud Photo Library, you better have all your photos backed up to an alternate and outside service or facility (apart from Apple) ... because that will be the only effective backup you will have for your photos.
You might look into Dropbox as that works well for me.

  • Does turning off iCloud backup affect my photostream, contacts, and calendar wireless syncing?

I keep getting the announcement that my icloud storage is almost full, so I checked into managing my storage. If I turn off the "Storage and Backup" on the bottom, will that affect my contacts, calendars, reminders, and photostream wireless syncing? I don't want to pay to get more icloud storage.

No, that just means it will no longer backup your device to iCloud.
More than likely it's the amount of photos and videos in your camera roll taking up all that space, hence why your storage is almost full. You can manually backup these photos and videos to your computer and then turn off the backup for just the camera roll (you'll see this option under Settings, iCloud, Storage & Backup, "This iPhone" or device you have, and then you can toggle Camera Roll on/off, where it also tells you how big the camera roll is) and still continue to backup the rest of the device (Settings, apps, wallpaper, etc) to iCloud. Or just turn the whole option off and backup to iTunes instead.

  • Trouble setting up new device with iCloud backup

I am trying to set up a new Mac Book Pro, and a new iPad Air. I wasn't sure which to choose, set up as new or from iCloud backup. I was having challenges backing up to iCloud from my iPhone, so I chose set up as new, thinking when I logged into iCloud I could transfer the info. We used the new devices, the contacts were blank and my husband added myself and him to the Contacts.
I was able to back up my iCloud on my iPhone, so I started over from scratch with the new iPad, and chose restore from iCloud backup. the contacts and calendar are not showing up? and the only names in the Contacts are the two my husband added before.

You can check what is stored in iCloud.
    iCloud.com > login > Contacts.
Then check out Calendar and Notes from there.
If they are there then there will be a way to download (sync) them to your iPad and new Mac. I’m not an expert in this latter procedure so I will leave it to others to post such instructions.
If on iCloud you find some good Notes, back them up by mailing them to yourself.
Did you have iCloud enabled on the MBP or another Mac with a copy of you Contacts on same?  Is there a Time Machine backup of same?  If so you can recover Contacts, Calendar, and Notes from that Time Machine backup.  If so post back and I’ll post instructions on such restores.

  • Ipad Air restore off Icloud backup. How do I know if my apps are taking too long in the "waitting" part of the reboot?

For some reason my Ipad Air decided it wanted to create used space on it's hard-drive today. It suddenly went from using 7GB to 11.5 GB. I couldn't find the solution so I decided to restore my Ipad from a backup last Thursday. Now all my apps appear but it is taking forever to download them, it wont change from waiting to downloading?
    Suggestions?
My main question is, how long does it take in each process till backup is 100% Complete its downloading around 7GB of storage, when will my apps stop "waiting"

Your camera roll photos - those that you take with the iPad or save from emails and websites - are in your backup.
If you use iCloud for backups, restore from your iCloud backup after you restore the iPad. If you restore with iTunes, restore from that backup after you restore the iPad. You can read more here.
How to backup and restore from a backup

But the bottom line is that if you have never backed up, there is no way to save the photos now.

  • TS3992 Altho' my 4S iPhone is connected to Wi-fi & I have a correct Apple/icloud ID and password, I keep getting the message "icloud backup Failed. Turn off airplane mode, or use Wi-Fi to enable iCloud backup." Should I delete my account, setting up a new

I cannot activate my iCloud backup of my 4S iPhone, even though I have definitely deactivated Airplane mode, and am connected to Wi-Fi.  I also have a correct Apple/iCloud ID and password.
Should I delete my iCloud account and set up a new one??
Please give me some assistance with this problem!
    Sincerely, Brianrit

To unfreeze it, reset it by holding the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.
To troubleshoot your problem with backing up to iCloud, this may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your iPad that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

  • Can't Delete old iPhone Backup off of iCloud backup storage

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to a iPhone 5S, I restored the 5S using the recent backup of old 4S.  Now I am getting "out of cloud storage space" messages on my new 5S phone.  I went into iCloud backup storage to delete the 4S backup, but, it says it is in use and cannot be deleted at this time. I have attempted to turn off iCloud backup on the old 4S phone, shutting it off, turning off iCloud backup, but, get the same failed message when attempting to delete the old backup.
What is the trick to removing this without wiping the old 4S, because I want to be sure there is nothing left on the phone, before I completely wipe it...and I can't tolerate the "No more space in cloud storage" message that keeps popping up on the 5S.
    Thank you,
    --k

That should clear up on it's own but may take 3-5 days to do so.  Wait a few days and try deleting the old backup again.  If you want to back up your phone in the meantime, manually back it up to your computer using iTunes (click Back Up Now on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings).

  • Delete phone numbers permantently even off of icloud

How can I delete phone numbers off of iCloud?  I wish not to have a backup!

The Contacts app on iCloud is not technically a back up but a means to sync it's data between devices. Turn Contacts off in the iCloud settings on all your devices selecting the option to keep a copy on the device when prompted. Double check, be sure Contacts is turn off the iCloud settings in all devices. Then from a web browser on a computer go to www.icloud.com and delete all contacts from the iCloud app.
Contacts is still a part of the iOS devices backup when it is in iTunes or iCloud. If you don't want this backup on iCloud turn it off in Settings/iCloud/Storage & Backup turning off iCloud Backup. It will then backup to a computer through iTunes.
