Deleting individual messages in iMessage.

Does anyone know how to delete individual messages in iMessage. Just updated to ios8 and have lost the function on my iPhone 5s

Hi pcdc,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be frustrating when you want to delete a message but cannot figure out how to do so in a new operating system. Please follow the steps in the attached article for information on how to complete this task.
Send messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
How do I delete a message?
To delete a message, tap and hold the message bubble, then tap More.
Tap Delete All to delete all the messages. Or tap to select the messages you want to delete, then tap .
After you delete a message, you can recover it only by restoring from a backup.
Have a great day,

  • Can not delete individual messages on ios8

I can not delete individual messages in iMessage after I "upgraded" to ios8.  If you hold down on the message, tap "more", THERE IS NO TRASH CAN ANYWHERE ON THE SCREEN.  There is no option I have found anywhere, except to delete the entire conversation.  Please help.

Thanks heaps.....the trying to enter a reply, then swiping downward on the keyboard worked.  That is the first useful suggestion I've seen for multiple posts with this question, so thank you very much.  Hopefully the next update will fix that problem so you don't have to go through the delete process the long way, but happy to use it as a temporary measure in the mean time.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

  • After upgrading the new operating system, it seems some useful features no longer work such as when typing a message the text anticipates the next word and when trying to delete individual messages from a contact, you can no longer tap and hold to select

After upgrading the new operating system on my Droid Razr M it seems some useful features no longer work such as when typing a message the text anticipates the next word and when trying to delete individual messages from a contact, you can no longer tap and hold to select multiple message you have to delete them individually or the entire thread. Is there a way to get these back?

Well, that's kind of embarrassing. And I honestly thought I paid attention to that... It works perfectly now, thank you so much!
As expected, cdm-git also works fine since DMs only work in the root mode as of now.
Just for the record, both type commands output "/usr/bin/startx" and pacman -Q gives "systemd 215-4".

  • After updating to IOS 8, I can not delete individual messages, and the trash can is gone

After I updated on IOS 8, I can not delete individual messages, only delete all and the trash can is gone!!!  Anyone else having this problem?

The option is still there - hold down on said text - more - then hit the trash icon.

  • Is there a keystroke combination to delete individual messages in Apple Mail without opening them?

Can I delete individual messages in the Apple Mail Inbox withhout opening them?

I just right-click on them and delete. However, opening an email does not subject you to any adverse affects if you have remote html content disabled.

  • HT4623 now that I've done the update: how do I delete individual messages, while still keeping some?

I'd like to know how to delete individual messages without deleting the whole conversation with the new update, it no longer gives you the edit button?

  • Deleting individual messages in a conversation iOS8

The trash bin option to delete individual messages in a conversation was available in iOS7. I don't see this any longer in iOS8. Was this useful feature removed?

  • Can't delete individual messages since the IOS8 upgrade.

Since the IOS8 upgrade, when trying to delete individual messages, the trash can no longer appears in the lower left corner. All that appears now is the camera and the area to write a message. I have reset all settings and rebooted multiple times. Initially after doing this the trash can will reappear. I delete some messages but then when I go back to delete more messages, the camera reappears. The only resolution I have found is to shut my phone down and restart it, but this is only a very temporary fix and is not ideal.

I have this issue also, it appears as though the Messages app is not detecting the context and switching to the right menu at the bottom. In addition, the other problems that show up when this happens are:
If you try to take a photo to send in a message, the camera app opens but the keyboard continues to cover the bottom of the screen (so you can't press the shutter button).
When you respond to an incoming message, the cursor doesn't automatically appear in the text box - you type characters, but they go nowhere. You have to actually tap once in the message box before typing.
When you tap send, even though the audio recording button isn't visible, as soon as your finger hits the screen the audio button pops up and a recording begins.
I would really like to go back to iOS 7. Even after 3 minor updates, iOS 8 is still very sloppy. Bad Apple!

  • Why can't I delete individual messages on either my iPad or my Mac when I can on mt iPhone?

Why is it that I can delete individual messages on iPhone, but can only delete the entire messages to any one contact on my Mac & iPad?

    Hi,
On the Mac version try Control Clicking the individual messages concerned.
I am not sure why you iPad is reacting differently from your other iOS device.

  • Why can I delete individual messages, but can only clear (delete) ALL "recent" calls? It should be possible to delete individual calls!

why can i delete individual messages, but not individual "recent" calls?

Because you can't. Plain and simple. This is asked at least once a day here.

  • How to delete individual messages in iOS 7 when it is auto detected as a phone number?

Hi, in iOS 7, in messages, individual messages can be deleted by holding that particular message and then selecting more to show up the thrash bin icon.
But my problem is i want to delete a message with only numbers in it.  The only options available after pressing and holding the message are:
    "Call 1234567"
    "Send Message"
    "add to contacts"
    "Copy"
    "cancel"
I discovered that i can do a round about method by holding another message to select the "more" option i mentioned earlier and then "tick" the message with the numbers to be deleted.  But what happens when all the messages are in numbers only?! That means I need to either create 1 more message or get the person to send me another message before I do the round about method.
In the first place, doing the round about method is already quite stupid...
    Can anyone advise? Thanks.

Oh yeah, now I remember that.
But I also remember that you had to go all the way to the start of the message to gain access to the current contact information. Where as in iOS7 that button you mentioned is the contact information. Personally I perfer iOS7. I don't delete my messages, so this is better for me.
However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to add an Edit button in that sub menu that shows up when you touch the upper right button. Currently there are opitions for "Phone", "FaceTime" and "Information" on the contact.

  • Why when I delete a message in iMessage on Ipad, the same message doesn't disappear automatically also in Messages on OS X (Mountain Lion)?

I've always had this kind of issue. When I write a new message on Ipad using 'iMessage', it appears immediately even on my Imac running OS X Mountain Lion. But when I delete on Ipad a message, I always had to do the same operation on my Imac because the deletion is not automatic in Mountain Lion. Is it normal? Is it a normal feature of the OS X or is there something wrong with Icloud? Has it ever happen to anyone? Thanks if you can help me.

    Hi,
    for the Points
Sometime I think I would like it if I could delete an iMessage completely.
Other times when reading them on my iPhone I wish to leave them until I can answer them with something that is on my Mac.
It seems that as a device or a Mac that is off line can "catch up" on iMessages sent within a few hours would suggest that the iMessages are held on the server for a period.
It would be handy for different levels of "deletion".

  • HT4623 Does the 7.1.1 update delete my messages including Imessage?

I would like to keep all my messages ecspecially the imessages from my family.  Does the new update delete them?  If so is there a way to download them first and retreive them later?
    Thanks for the help.

Do you not backup your phone to either itunes or icloud?
Those data you mention is part of the backup.
You should be backing up on a regular basis.
so backup your phone and then do the upgrade.
I've never lost anything due to upgrading the IOS on my phone.

  • Idividual message on imessage won't delete

i like my messages to be clean and i like to delete individual messages were i had a typo. But for some reason these two messages wont delete. I double click them, right click, press delete and nothing happens. Can you guys help me?

Let's try the simple, stupid approach first. Quit and relaunch Messages and try again.

  • Is there a way to delete certain messages that have already been deleted?

I have some deleted messages that I want permanently deleted. Is there a way to delete individual messages permanently?

If you do not have a backup, it's gone no matter who deletes the messages.
If you have a backup, you can restore from that backup to retrieve the messages.
