Deleting Mail Attachments doesn't reduce email size

Trying to keep my mailbox size down by deleting attachments. Attachments all show as deleted but the email sizes do not change. Quite odd that an email with no attachments should show as 25mb! Any ideas? Apple Mail 7.3, Mavericks 10.9.3

Yes - the principal is: if you need to keep an attachment, store it in the relevant place e.g. pictures folder, documents, movies, icloud etc. Don't keep large attachments in the email system.
Also applies to 'Sent' items. Except where forwarding an attachment from someone else, you will always have the original item on your hard drive so keeping it in email sent items is completely pointless.
Once deleted, mail leaves a small text item detailing what the attachment was so you still have a record of what was sent / received.
You can also delete all attachments in an entire mailbox - bit risky tho'.
Where I had an issue was missing attachments in long threads - easily done. Thought I had selected all messages in a thread and deleted all attachments but missed some.
One tip, you might find it easier to view the messages / attachments in 'Classic' view. Go to Mail>Preferences>Viewing and select 'Classic Layout'. Once in, right click the menu bar to customise if necessary and  add 'size' 'attachments' and whatever else to the strip above the message list. You can then easily sort by size.
happy shrinking!

  • Delete pages doesn't reduce file size, why?

Using Adobe 6.0 on Windows XP.  Have 30k file and want to reduce size without doing as print file.  82 pages long.  Tried copying and deleting pages 42 thru 82 but file stays same size. Why doesn't it reduce to half  the size?

Basically Save As is supposed to remove everything that is deleted and or replaced. Sounds like it is not doing it for you for some reason. The Save retains the old stuff in case you change your mind -- no matter that nobody I know can get the info back anyway. This difference is apparently a hold over from copying how MS did it in OFFICE.
If you can not use Reduce File Size, then try the PDF Optimizer that has more options. You might want to concentrate on the image resolution and possibly color depth from what you are describing. I last ditch effort (not nec. recommended) is to print the PDF to a new one that uses a lower graphic resolution.

  • How to delete the attachments of several ancient emails simultaneously?

In order to diminish the space used by Thunderbird, I'd like to delete the attachments, without deleting the email. How to do this for 50 emails all together? I only found a way to do it one by one, email after email, which takes much time… Thank you!

Thunderbirds add-ons are platform neutral, so of course it works on OSX. You may however have tried to install it in Firefox which tells you bad things about not installing.

  • How to reduce email size on ipad

Under Usage, email size is 52 GB, yet I have cleaned everything out.  How do I reduce the size to open up available space on my iPad?

Have you tried closing the email app by double clicking the Home button and swiping the email app upwards ?
If that does not clear it, then reboot your iPad by holding the Sleep and Home buttons together until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons and allow the iPad to restart.

  • CF mail server doesn't send emails

    Hi everyone,
we are running a CF 4.5 server in our company. the CFMail
doesn't send emails since last week. the emails are in the queue.
the server IP is correct, we restarted it a few times, nothing
    helped.
Does anyone have any idea about possible problems?
    thanks in advance.

I've seen other posts that indicate sometimes an email
    message can cause
a log jam. It can't be sent for some goodness only knows
    reason and
then causes the process to abort piling up messages behind
    it.
What happens if you remove the first (or first few) messages
    in the que?

In order to upgrade my iPAD Air to 7.1, I need to free up space.  My email is very large, but I don't see any tools for sorting by size.  Any suggestions?

    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

    Thanks in advance,

just start TM from mail, scroll back in time in the mail window, locate the email in question and hit "restore". it will be restored to a separate mailbox in "on my mac" section. you can move it to the desired location from there.

  • Reduce Attachment size in Mail on iPad (4.2)

    Greetings:
I have spent a ton of time trying to find out how to do this but only seem to see where people talk about the ability to "select size of photo attachments" yet I cannot figure out how to actually do this.
This is a big deal for me as I mail images all the time and want to set my iPad up so it reduces the size of the image if possible
    Thanks
    Doug

Thanks for the information. I looked for the User Guide on the iPad page in the online store and the link was still to the old PDF file--my first clue was the "orientation" toggle was listed and not the silent switch. After your reply I went back in to search under manuals and found it. I downloaded it to the iBook for easy reference.
By the way, I also noted that some photos I saved from the web directly on my iPad were not able to be resized when I attempted to email them. I don't pretend to understand that <g>

  • Reducing the size of pictures to send in an email

I wanted to export a batch of pictures all at once to send in an email.  I found a way that is both quick and easy all inside iPhoto.  First I choose all the pictures I want to send.  I drag them to the desktop and put them in a folder.  Fortunately in iPhoto this does not delete them from the main library like on a PC.  I now go to import.  I import the entire group of pictures back into iPhoto.  This puts them in a file called, "Last Imported"  I can now select that entire grop and export.  I export to a web, (second choice to the right on the export window)  Export to your desktop.  A folder will be created.  Inside that folder will be, Images, all your pictures reduced in size, and even individal web pages and even thumbnails.  At this point I drag all the pictures in my recent import file to the trash, so I dont have duplicates in my library.  May sound like a lot of work but it is honestly quick and easy and gives you pictures which are small and easy to attach.  The last step is to open up my mail and get ready to send.  I can select all the pictures to attach and since they are small they attach quickly and off they go.

Even easier is to select the photos and export them (file menu ==> export) seting the desired size to a desktop folder and e-mail from there
Or set apple Mail as your e-mail client in the iPhoto preferences and then you get a size option when you create the e-mail

  • Reducing document size for email

Hi, I am trying to send an email attaching 15 pg doc. It keeps rejecting saying file is too large. Can I put all 15 pgs in 1 attachment (currently 15 attachments) and reduce the size somehow so it goes through?

iPhoto does not work on photos that are not in its database
in iPhoto you can select a photo and click on mail (if you have configured your iPhoto preferences for your mail client) and select actual, large, medium or small as the size to mail - if you are using the mail program there is a similar menu in the lower right hand corner of the compose window
If none of those options work in iPhoto you can export (file menu ==> export) and set the exact pixel dimensions you want - for "good" quality I would want at least 200 dpi so the resulting JPEG would need to be at least 1600 x 2000 and 2400 x 3000 would be better
I certainly would use a JPEG rather than a TIFF to get the best quality relative to the size
TIFFs give a small quality improvement for a large size increase

  • How do you get Mountain Lion Mail to show sent email size?

I upgraded to mountain lion I think a couple months ago so I don't remember exactly when I lost this feature, but in Snow Leopard for sure there was an option that when composing a new email, a little bar across the bottom of the email showed the size of your email so when you were adding attachments you could see the size your email was getting to be. I obviously haven't used that in a while because I ahvent' sent attachments in a long while, but I have recently started to do that again and tonight when I was adding files, there was no bar across the bottom of the email at all so I have no idea what size my email was. Even when I hit send and the progress bar in the bottom left of Mail ("Mail Activity") that use to show the file size right underneath the bar also now no longer shows the size so I have absolutely no idea how big the email I sent was.
Can anyone tell me how to get the option back to show the email size of the mail your composing in that little bar on the bottom of your email as well as the file size to display as you are sending in "Mail Actiivity" window? Thanks so much if anyone can help. Thank you!

  • Mail doesn't send emails after Leopard upgrade!

    Hi everyone..
I am wondering if anybody is facing this as well..
Since I upgraded to Leopard, and Mail retrieves both of my emails on Gmail and .Mac inboxes very well and stable.. But, when it comes to sending, it doesn't.
It keeps on taking forever to finally give me this error "The connection to the server “smtp.mac.com” on port 25 timed out" and of course, I have checked everything the error told me, and no it's not my fault. I thought .Mac mail servers are down, but, no.. My outbox mail lies there for about three days now and no clue how could I help mail succeed sending them.
If somebody faced similar problem, and might have a solution for it, please help.
    Thank you.
    Mark

    When I try to delete an e-mail . . .
    Error message is as follows:
"The IMAP command “UID COPY” (to Deleted Messages) failed for the mailbox “INBOX” with server error: Error in IMAP command received by server.."
This is my first Leopard bug. The Mail program cannot delete messages using IMAP. Mail worked fine using Tiger, so that is lame. Now I have to use Webmail to actually delete a message. Any thoughts?

"when I try save to PDF it just wants to save it to a file?"
Correct. The difference between "Mail PDF" and "Save PDF" is that the first opens a new Mail message with the file attached. the second saves a file which you may attach to an email message.
"Terrainathome is a good example of what I am trying to do."
Not familiar with Terrainathome, but my guess is that the company is sending an email message containing HTML code that downloads what's essentially a web page into the displayed message. To do that, you'll need a website, software that will produce the necessary HTML code, and recipients with email clients capable of interpreting HTML (which is 'most email clients' these days).
