Deleting mail from gMail

I have just moved a large IMAP a/c to Google, mainly so that I can have the same sent mail on both my iMac and iBook.
However I now find that a lot of my new mail (both sent and received) is at least duplicated - and not just in the All mail folder.
No matter how many times I delete - or drag to trash and empty both the gMail and On My Mac - they still seem to come back.
How do I get rid of mail permanently? Can't find anything on Google's help pages.
Cheers, Colin

Seems to have done the trick - overnight Spam was in a folder called Bin in Mail.
Excellent. Keep in mind there will be some messages that are spam that make it past the Gmail filters, so nothing is perfect.
Can I delete [or in some way unsubscribe from Bin?
I'm not sure, as I don't really use IMAP. I would have guess that there is, but I'm unsure of the exact method or process. But if the filter you created to put delete spam before it reaches your Inbox works, then deleting it in Mail should also synchronize that when you next access Gmail, so it won't keep coming back.
Google does have an entire section of help devoted to Gmail, and if you haven't read it or looked at it, you really should. They also have a discussion forum where you can post questions. The link is http://mail.google.com/support/

  • Can't delete mail from gmail account

I am using Apple mail and it is synced with a gmail. When something from the gmail shows up in my inbox and I delete it, it goes to a folder called all mail. When I delete something from all mail it reappears there ten minutes later. Any suggestions?

You might have better luck asking this in the Mail forum.

  • Deleting E-mails from Gmail

    Hi,
I have been using Mail App on my Mac for 4 months. Since then, all what I do when I need to delete an email, is simply to press back space, and it moves the email to Trash.
Last week, I have noticed that all e-mails I have deleted are still available in All Mail. So when an Email is deleted, Mail App only removes the Label.
Is there a way I can delete emails from Gmail using Mail on Mac?
    Thank a lot
    Best Regards,
    AMDeeb

I guess the best solution is not to use Mail App.
GMail's weirdness cannot be properly dealt with by any e-mail client I'm aware of.
Microsoft Outlook on PC is compatible with Gmail's "Delete" thing.
On Mac OSX, I found an alternative to Mail App that is fully compatible with GMail, which is Thunderbird.
It is even compatible with staring emails as if you are in a web browser. Also, you can change the deleted items destination to you GMail's Trash Folder, which means that you can delete them from the server without logging from a browser.
I hope using Thunderbird will be temperer, till Apple solve GMail issue either via software update (which i doubt), or via Mac OSX Lion.
If you take the time to correctly setup Mail for GMail there is no functional difference between it and Thunderbird (as far as folder display/mapping), this is a user issue not Gmail and not MacMail.

  • Delete mail from server using ipad not computer

How do I delete mail from the server using my Ipad

That completely depends on your email service provider.
For gmail, for example, you would do this as follows:
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [your gmail account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • How to import ALL MAIL from Gmail to OSX Mail?

I am trying to migrate my mail system over to OSX Mail from Google Mail, but I can't seem to make "All Mail"  show up as an option in OSX Mail, even though I have the folder checked  in the Gmail settings to share with outside apps.  I am on Yosemite and a MacBookPro.
How are others switching to OSX Mail from Gmail?
    Thanks for your help!

You open your email - edit - then select each email to delete.
If you have an imap account you can delete it from the server and it will reflect on yoru phone.

  • Deleting emails from Gmail does not delete them from BB

    HI,
Just bought a brand new BB 8830 World Edition and using Gmail. Deleting emails from the BB works just fine and Gmail is being updated. But deleting emails from Gmail does not delete the corresponding email from the BB.
On the BB, there is an option "Mailbox and Handheld" that works just fine but there is no such thing on the Gmail options.
Is this a bug or a normal way of doing things? It would be quite abnormal to having to manually delete your emails on the BB that have already been deleted on Gmail; it's just deleting twice the same email.
I would be grateful to anyone who can provide an answer.
    Regards.
    Springtime.

You can delete mails from your handheld as well as from Gmail server which I guess solve the issue for you. To be able to do so check the following options -
    Messages
    Options
    Email Reconciliation
    Deelete On: Mailbox & handheld
In place of Mailbox & handheld you also select Deelete On: Prompt. This is will give prompt wheneve you'll delete any mail and give you options what to do.

  • Nokia Messaging not deleting emails from Gmail ser...

When I access my gmail account via Nokia Messaging on my E72, any emails that I delete using my nokia are not deleted from my gmail account - instead they are being transferred to my All Mail folder, which is where I keep email that I have ARCHIVED, not email that I have deleted, so it's messed up my archived mail and also means that when I access my gmail via POP in Outlook, items that I have previously 'deleted' on my mobile have to be downloaded and sorted through again. Is there a way to change this behaviour? At the moment the gmail app is a better option.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me (E75). I created an extra label. I also subscribed in imap to this folder. When I want to delete a message, I move it to this folder / label. Every now and then I delete all these mails from gmail on my PC.
    Suyogmh wrote:
This is well known behavior of Gmail and not problem with Nokia Messaging as such.
Gmail has different way of handling emails with labels instead of folders. So "All Mails" means all mails except Spam and Trash. Check following link for more details.
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en &answer=77657
Check if following settings are in order in Gmail - settings - forwarding and POP/IMAP in web browser.
    Status: IMAP is enabled
Auto-Expunge : Do not automatically expunge messages
When a message is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:  Immediately delete the message forever
Folder Size Limits: Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder
Now head over to email.nokia.com and login with your username/pwd
Under My Email Addresses, for your gmail account , click edit settings
Now in "Mail folders to sync" Please ensure that you select "All Mail" , "Spam" and " Trash"
You can also select other labels , max upto 10.
Click Save changes and log out.
Now in your Nokia Phone, Open Nokia Messaging and Sync again.
Go to Gmail and these new labels should appear there.
If you want to delete a message from all folders, move it to the [Gmail]/Trash folder.
If you delete a message from [Gmail]/Spam or [Gmail]/Trash, it will be deleted permanently.
So I know it's little extra effort but we can do it. I hope you find this useful. If yes, don't forget to give me Kudos

  • Delete mail from server when removed from inbox

I have a POP e-mail account set up. Under the mail account advanced settings there is an option to delete mail from the server when I delete it from the iPad inbox. I assume this is a valid option for the account since it is shown, and it is what I would like to do. However it doesn't appear to be working. Is this truly an available option?

I also have a POO account wit ph Verizon and experienced the same thing. Apple tech said that is a property of POP accounts and I would have to change the account to Imap for the iPad to be able to delete from the server.

  • Delete mail from server

I use a pop3 account for mail. Can I set up the mail program to delete mail from server when I delete mail locally?

Not precisely. You can set it to delete when when you move a message from the Inbox which should have the same effect in most cases, but I haven't tested it to make sure.
Mail -> Accounts -> Your POP account. Go to the Advanced pane and check the box that says "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" and make the appropriate setting in the pulldown.
    Regards.

  • Delete mail from server when deleting from mail

    I like Mail.
But - the ONE feature I miss from Entourage is this:
Delete mail from server when deleting the trash
Mail can be set to delete messages from the server -- after downloading to the local computer. OK - BUT - I read my email from 3 computers. I want to keep the messages on the server - unless I delete them after trashing - and to read them on 3 computers.
The BEST way is to delete when I trash them -- NOT when I read them.
Using the mail program to see all messages on the server and to then delete them one-by-one is a major PITA.
How can I tell Apple to add this feature?

Use the "When moved from Inbox" option that should do it. If you trash it then it goes, if you move it goes... HTH

I am unable to delete mail from my inbox.  A window appears saying "message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.  How do I fix this.

Give your phone a reboot - hold down power/home button together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release, wait for your phone to reboot and then try moving  your mail again.

How can I set up my email so when I delete mail from my Mac it deletes from my iPhone as well?

That is a function of your email account, if it is an Imap account it will sync, if it's a POP account, it won't.

  • How can I move mail from Gmail to another account?

Mail.app in Mavericks is incompatible with Gmail. I use Gmail. I have about 2GB of mail, most of it in a few dozen archive folders, stored on Gmail, and (I think) duplicated locally on my Mac Mini.
I think my best recourse is to switch to an email service provider that conforms to the IMAP standard (which Gmail does not). Assuming I find one, I will have both accounts, Gmail and the new one, in Mail.app. How can I move the mail from Gmail to the other account?
In Mail.app in Mavericks, All Mail must be marked to show as a folder, and when I move a message from a folder in Gmail it will still be in the All Mail folder.
When all folders are empty, including the Inbox, can I be sure that every message has been moved to the new account, even though every message is still in the All Mail folder?

--> yes, it would be nice if they adhered to standards.  That said, mine works great.  So far.

--> If all you want to do is keep your history, make a local folder on your mac and drag all the mail messages there (both se4nt and incoming).  I am not sure what will happen if you later drag those into the new Xmail account
When all folders are empty, including the Inbox, can I be sure that every message has been moved to the new account, even though every message is still in the All Mail folder?
--> Dont look in "all mail". Open your inbox and look at each individual inbox.
Good luck,. But first, try to fix your account.
