Deleting mail from .Mac, retaining it in Mail Inbox.

I have run out of space on my .Mac mail account, I went ahead and deleted all my emails online, however when I opened Mail it synced with .Mac and deleted all the emails in my inbox.
How can I get Mail to retain a copy of the email after I delete the original from the server?

A .Mac account type is really an IMAP type account so when deleting messages from the account's Inbox mailbox online using webmail access, the deleted messages will be removed from the account's Inbox mailbox in Mail when the server stored mailboxes for the account in Mail are synchronized with the server which is the account's Inbox mailbox by default in Mail which cannot be turned off and the same with an IMAP type account in any email client.
The same applies in reverse. When deleting a message from the account's Inbox mailbox in Mail, the deleted message is also removed from the server.
You can utilize a user created "On My Mac" mailbox or mailboxes in Mail which are stored locally on the hard drive. When transferring messages from the account's Inbox to a user created "On My Mac" mailbox in Mail, the transferred messages are stored locally on the hard drive and removed from the server at the same time so you need to do this using the Mail.app and not online with webmail access.
You can also adjust the amount of available server storage space for messages vs the amount of storage space used for other purposes.

    I think I have cracked it.
    Apple mail and Thunderbird are supposed to use the same basic mail format, however they interpret (or ignore) the standard in different ways. The argument goes rather more against Apple as they claim to be able to import them and can't (Mozilla makes no such claim). Anyway, the solution has been found in this very old thread here

    Download the the Python script at the top (13 Jun 2004) and the more detailed instructions how to use it are near the bottom (15 May 2008). Ignore the stuff about Applescripts in between unless you understand them. If you give it the whole directory it will clean up all the files it finds writing a fresh copy called name.cleaned in each case.
    Used in conjuntion with the T'Bird plugin suggested by Eric above, use the script to clean up the exported files. Before importing into Mail I deleted all the original mbox files (just leaving the cleaned ones) then imported using mbox format in Mail. There is the inevitable cleanup of directories required but it is all working now.

    I just went the other way - Outlook to Thunderbird to Mac Mail.  I lost some notes in some folders.
    My fall back position was to set up an IMAP account and use Google sync to Outlook to move my mail into a Google account.  Then on the Mac I set up a IMAP account to download all the mail.  Once I had it on the Mac, I copied the IMAP folders into Personal folders on Local Machine.  I then deleted the IMAP account and reverted to using my 'usual accounts'.

  • Cannot send mail from mac mail or Entourage

    Hi guys,
    Wondered if anyone out there can shed some light on this little problem.
    I use Entourage for my emails & all was working fine until yesterday. I can receive mail from all and sundry but I can't send anything. I subscribe to ntlworld internet service and if log onto my email through their webmail, then it's fine. I've tried sending mail from mac mail and I get the same problem. I've been onto microsoft support & gone through all the troubleshooting with Entourage. The Entourage techy suggested it was my internet provider blocking my emails as they think I'm a spammer?? I phoned ntl & they insist it's nothing to do with them as I can send/receive from the website. (If I send an email with the address @ntlworld it's fine, but any other address i.e. all my clients/mates etc just stays in my outbox.
    Nothing on any of my settings has changed so I'm at a loss what to do next.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    it may be that your server (internet provider) has just started blocking outgoing mails not authenticated by them.
    Go to your account set up...
    and fill in the following details.
    SMTP SERVER: smtp.mac.com
    then click on advanced sending otions...
    click on override default SMTP port... type 587
    click on SMTP servber requires authentication...
    use same setting as receiving mail server.

    I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
    I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
    I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

    I am having a strange problem with outgoing mail all my mail clients are pointed to the server as smtp server. All mail from Macs are delivered without any problems but mail from PC's are universally rejected and I can't understand why. I did not have this problem with 10.4.11 and we do not authenticate. Here is the reject message:-

    Will work without authentication as long as your network range has been entered into the postfix settings.
    That said, you should require all your clients to authenticate to send through your server.

    First try rebuilding your Inbox.
    Select the Inbox.
    Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Rebuild (last option in list)
    Note: If you delete a POP account in Mail, it will delete any messages in the Inbox. It does not delete your custom folders or your sent messages.
    If the messages have been deleted and are no longer on the server, you can restore from Time Machine.

But after them all jump back to where they are , So you need to open the Finder ---> click the download -----> find the file which is belong to the app (make sure ) ------->click it  -----> drug it into the trash. then you can hear a little sound like you through it into the bin. it is really humanny  isn't it ? then go back to the finder again .---->click the application -------> find the icon on there which is you just drag into the trash.  do it again . take this one into the trash as well  then you will find the icon on the launchpad is disppeared . at the end don't forget to empty your trash   After that all job done , it is been deleted  ,

    For some unknown reason, I have been having issues when sending and recieving e-mails from my Yahoo account in mail on my iPad, but can use mail just fine on my iPhone. Why is this, and how do I fix it?
    I accidentally dropped my iPad 2 on Monday, it hit my foot, and the screen cracked. I recieved this iPad some time in August 2011, and no longer have any sort of warrany on it.
