Deleting mail on Gmail through Mail

When I delete a message on mail, how do I make it so that the message is also deleted in Gmail? Thanks for the help.

with Gmail IMAP this is automatic
V.K., I have to disagree with you on this point. As stated by Google on [this site|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892&topic=12814]:
Messages that are deleted from an IMAP folder (...) only have that label removed and still exist in All Mail
Up till now I deleted lots of mails via the Delete button in Apple Mail (and thought they were gone because they weren't shown in Mail anymore - they weren't even shown in the All Mail folder). But a few days ago, as I logged into the web-interface of GoogleMail for the first time after quite a while, I found out that over 270 mails, although seemingly deleted, were still lurking around in my account! The only way to get rid of them was by putting them into the Trash folder and emptying it.
And that's exactly what I recommend as a method for Apple Mail as well: don't press the Delete button but put all mails you don't want anymore "manually" in GoogleMail's trash folder within Mail. All mails that are stored there are automatically deleted after a period of 30 days, that's for sure.

  • Using Gmail through Mail in Mountain Lion - issue with inbox syncing across multiple machines

Hi. I am using Gmail through Mail in Mountain Lion on my iMac, as well as Mail in my iPad and iPhone. Generally speaking Mail seems to sync well across the three machines. However for some reason when I view an email in my inbox on either my iPhone or my iPad, the inbox on my iMac does not reflect the fact the email has been read: ie, while the email is marked as having been 'read' across both my iPad and iPhone, it remains 'unread' on my iMac. It is really frustrating and stuffs up the process managing the flow of emails. Is anyone able to help me please? Thanks so much.

Hi SB. Thanks for your advice. I checked and I am using the recommended settings. I'm still not sure how to fix this. It's very irritating! I will read an email on my ipad, then hit my imac and see that the email is sitting unread in my Mail inbox.

  • Unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3 on Mac Book Pro

I am unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3, on my MacBook Pro although I can receive my email on the gmail web site. *I can send email through Mail with no problems I just can't receive any e-mail in Mail.* Recently I got a message that my user name or password was incorrect. I made sure the information was correct but still I can't receive any e-mail in Mail. Could somebody please help me?
Here are the settings. Are they correct?
    Account Type: Gmail IMAP
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com

I had the same problem. The unlocking mentioned above worked for me. Right now mail.app is downloading the messages.
I've also on other message boards found a link for correct setup: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/howto_setup_gmail_imap_andmail.app1/
The key here is to go to labs and enable advanced IMAP settings.
I'm not cheering yet if I hover over the folders / labels that are synced I get de message "Unable to open "foldername""

  • Moving mac mail messages to gmail through imap

    Newbie question so be gentle
Looking to move my Mac Mail to Gmail through IMAP - this is to ensure I can access my mail from any machine whilst I'm on the road working plus if my hard drive dies (which it did a year ago) I won't loose any messages/folders.
Currently have a couple of email addresses coming straight into Mac Mail and have numerous folders set up. Want to know if I link the Mac Mail to my Gmail account using IMAP will all my messages plus folders simply sync online with no issues? Will the folders remain intact (I understand Gmail uses 'labels' as folders)?
Looking forward to hearing from you and thanks in advance for your time.
    Peace
    DK

you can configure your gmail account as an imap account in mac mail. Then you can drag and drop either way between the 2 accounts. Once you have done that when you login to gmail webmail the mail will have been added there.
If you want to configure gmail webmail to recieve mail from a different mail account other than your gmail then you need to goto the gmail website for answers as this is not related to apple.

  • Mail: GMail - Delete mails completely

I'm using my GMail from Apple Mail with IMAP. When I delete messages in this client, the message are deleted from the folder/label, but it's still inside the "All Mails" when I go to the webmail.
I don't like this behaviour. Are there a way to change this? I would like my mails to be moved to the bin/trash-folder - like when I delete mails from the GMail Webmail.
I've chosen the mail behaviour like Google recommend here:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892

I agree completely with Dennis. The Gmail concept of an "All Mail" label translates into a massive directory in Mail.app full of unwanted email.
It turns out there may be a way to effectively hide specific labels from IMAP clients like Mail.app or the iPhone:
    http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/new-in-labs-advanced-imap-controls.html
I'm still experimenting with the settings, but it seems to have worked for me.

  • Deleted mail keeps returning gmail

Deleted email in Gmail keep returning after I delete them from my junk mail. I'm running Mail Version 7.3 (1878.6) and OS X 10.9.4.
I've seen older posts on the Apple Community pages outlining the same problems. I've tried the various solutions:  CMD X (cut), delete/reinstall Gmail, delete originals from Gmail account, etc.  None of this works, and the now the list of old/deleted emails is growing by the week.
Anyone got any ideas?  And why did Apple never address this problem in any of its updates?

See the comment by Stephen Adams in this thread, and by William Lloyd in this thread.

  • E71 - fully removing deleted mail

    I actually have two problems:
    1) Deleted mail headers remain in my mailbox, with apparently no way to actually fully remove them from the machine.  If I delete a message, I want it to GO AWAY!  As it is now, it just has a red strike through the envelope icon.
    2)  On the Home screen, the mail displays a number which I can't figure out.  Right now it says Gmail (5).  I have, in fact, zero unread, unsent, drafts, or even undeleted mails in Gmail!  I have nothing!  Before it said 2, now 5... I can't figure it out, and I want it to say 0 considering there aren't any new mails!
    Weird stuff here, people.

I agree that defaut mail is weird or rather illogical. By right when a mail is deleted, it should NOT be displayed in inbox at all.
After some time using the default mail application or "messaging" (since E61i, now E71), I come to understand  that the "messaging" is a mirror of the mail server.  E.g. if the mail server has 10 e-mails, then Nokia's messaging/mail also will have 10 even if you have deleted.
So to permanently removed all e-mails in Nokia's messaging/mail , then you must
    removed or delete all e-mails in your mail server, then;
connect Nokia's messaging/mail with your mail server for updating
And all e-mails are gone in your Nokia's messaging/mail.
To Nokia: please improve! Why not add a "trash" and move all deleted mail from "inbox" to "trash"?

  • Delete mail from server using ipad not computer

How do I delete mail from the server using my Ipad

That completely depends on your email service provider.
For gmail, for example, you would do this as follows:
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [your gmail account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

There are settings in Gmail that control which messages are visible
    to the POP3 client.

  • If i delete mail in G-mail than automatically delete in Thunderbird, How can I prevent from this there is any solution to remain mail in thunderbird?

If i delete mail in G-mail than automatically delete in Thunderbird, How can I prevent from this there is any solution to remain mail in thunderbird?

If you have a gmail IMAP mail account, you need to understand tht you are remotely viewing the server folders, so basically the folders you see in Thunderbird are the same folders you see when you use webmail - (logon to google account via browser).
If you want to delete emails off the server, but keep those specific emails accessible in Thunderbird, then you need to move/copy them from the Thunderbird IMAP gmail mail account and store them in Local Folders account in suitably created folders before you delete them from the IMAP mail account.

  • Why is the Mail app deleting mail from my account?

Hi. I have used the mail app before and when i used it (i have hotmail) i connected it and all, but it started to delete mail from my hotmail account from the mail app. I have the newset software and i heard that a new mail app came. Is this fixed? I do not want to lose any emails from my hotmail account.
    Thanks in advance!

My primary email account is with my ISP. Through their webpage access to my account, I have it set to forward all mail (without deleting it) to my MobileMe account. I have Mail set to acess my MobileMe account only. This allows me to get all my mail without any of it actually leaving the ISP's mailbox.

  • Duplicate mailboxes and deleted mail archive

So after installing the latest Mac security update, Security Update 2006-007 PowerPC (no idea if this is related to the problem or not), Mail 2.1 was not able to receive messages from my POP earthlink account, even though I could check it through my browser, so the internet connection was not the problem. Everything looked the same in the Mail preferences, so I decided to run Earthlink Total Access and use it to 'set up Mail for my account' in case anything had changed that I wouldn't know about. It said Mail was already configured for the account and when I relaunched Mail there were now two listings of my same email account - one with all my old messages and one that was 'new' and empty and both now received a new email at the same time. Naturally, I found it displeasing to have two copies of one account showing, so I tried to delete the new copy. I can't remember if I tried to delete this duplicate mailbox through the preferences or by right-clicking on it in the left hand column. Anyway, both boxes are still there and they still work, but all my old messages are gone - except for sent messages. Mail still lists all the subject lines, but instead of the actual contents, clicking on them shows this message:
"The message from ____ <________@________.com> concerning “___” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I hope there's a backup copy somewhere of these messages. [I already ran FileSalvage and it did not turn up any.] Oh, they don't show up in Spotlight anymore, either. If Mail itself doesn't keep an archive, is there a way to look at recently trashed items on the hard drive and recover them? I suppose I'll need to do this before I write new data to the disk, so please respond quickly. [Maybe I overwrote them when I downloaded FileSalvage....]
OK, so accepting that all the old emails are gone forever, I still have these very important questions about the application:
How do I re-download the emails that are still on the server? I have emails going back to Nov. 9th that I can access through a browser, but I'd like to at least get those onto my HD.
Also, I can't save any changes to either copy of the same account because I get a message that says I already have an account with the same name. I still need to delete that stupid duplicate, but I'm afraid to mess with it until I know for sure that there's no way to get my emails back. Right now one mailbox preference window says it deletes downloaded messages after one week and another says it deletes after one month, but I don't want anything deleted from the server, but I can't change the settings, as noted.
Can I automatically backup my emails to a more secure location or change Mail to not erase things so easily?

The other messages are lost, then. If you don’t have a backup and FileSalvage cannot recover them, you’re left with whatever remains at the server. Unless you want to continue trying to recover deleted *.emlx files, proceed as follows.
For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the account folder to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting that file causes Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
Before opening Mail again, re-create the preferences file to get rid of the duplicate account settings without also deleting the account folder (ignore step 1, I’m just copying & pasting here):
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after fixing the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.

  • Delete mail in iOS 4.2

Under 4.2 I don't seem to have the option to delete mail anymore, just archive. Is there a way to have both options?

Afaik this affects only Gmail accounts. In my case, I have the Trash options in MobileMe and COMCAST accounts, the archive one in the Gmail one.
It's a function of how their folder structure is set up and you change the appearance here in Mail by changing the setting there. It's been discussed here numerous times and should be easy enough to locate via Search. It just doesn't bug me enough to pay much attention to or to try to change it.
Also, afaik, this isn't new in 4.2; seems it did the same thing before. Or, perhaps not.

  • Updated my iphone 3gs to the ios4.3.5. Now the mail application doesn't function properly. App doesn't sync mail from server - deleting mail hardly works now. When the phone downloads messages from the mail server, it bounces/flashes between accounts too

I recently upgraded to Lion and then updated my iphone to iOS 4.3.5. Now my mail app on the phone seems all messed up. When I check mail, it pulls down mail from the server but I have to go into each individual account to make that happen but even then the view automatically bounces from one mail account to another but never to the Microsoft Exchange server. It also doesn't let me delete mail

I have wasted much time trying different combinations to have push and gmail "send mail as". I guess I have tried so much because it seems like a no brainer.
If you set up as exchange you can at least add in the extra comma and address, but it disappears when you go to send an email.
very frustrating indeed. my solution is to use the gmail app for notifications of new email.
