Deleting modified/original images

I had a question earlier for how to delete original pictures after I had rotated them, but today I found out that pictures that I had deleted from the library (cause I didn't want them) still are in the iPhoto folder! My camera automatically rotates pictures for me, so I don't have to do it in iPhoto, but they still create an original and a modified picture in the library. And so my question is: Why isn't pictures that I deleted from the library (but was rotated when imported, so the picturea are in both the modified and originals folders) deleted from my computer?
Egh, I'm bad at explaining, sorry.

Based on what you've stated, it's an impossible task fixing your old library BUT keep reading. Depending on exactly how much damage you did, there is hope that you can retrieve at least most of your photos. You will need to create a brand new (empty) library and put your old photos into the new library.
ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IS BASED ON iPHOTO VERSION 6. I DON'T REMEMBER THE LIBRARY DETAILS OF THE EARLIER VERSIONS BUT, IF YOU HAVE AN EARLIER VERSION, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR.
First, the two critical folders are the "Originals" folder and the "Modified" folder. Find them, take them out of the library, and and put them in a safe place, like the desktop. Take the rest of your old library and put it in the trash! Don't empty the trash just yet.
Now, open iPhoto. It will ask you to find the library or to create a new one. You want to create a new one. Next, you need to import the old photos but you must make a decision. You can import from the old "Originals" folder OR you can import from the old "Modified" folder OR you can import both. The "Originals" folder contains the original files from the camera (surprise!). IF you've modified any photos, the "Modified" folder conains the latest modified version. NOTE that whatever you choose to import will be recognized by iPhoto as an "original" and it will be placed in the NEW "Originals" folder.
Once you make up your mind, open iPhoto and go to File > Import to Library. Navigate to locate the folders inside your OLD "Originals" folder or your OLD "Modified" folder (or both) - these are the folders that you put on the desktop - and import accordingly.
After you're satisfied with the results, you can move the OLD "Originals" and "Modified" folders into the trash and empty the trash.

  • Deleting original images in referenced library

Stupid question - but how do you delete original images in a referenced library?  I have used the function "File>Delete original image and all versions" and I thought that this had permanently deleted some originals that I didn't want - but when I look in finder, they're still there on the hard drive, they just don't display any more in Aperture.  I can't believe you have to go and find the original file in finder to delete it...?  What have I missed?
    Thanks!

OK, have worked out that when I empty the aperture trash I need to tick the little box that says 'move referenced files to system trash' or something like that...
So...next question: how do I get the files that I've failed to delete properly back into Aperture so I can delete them properly - given that I don't know what files they are...

  • How can I change the time of photos in info in iPhoto for iOS. I've done it in iPhoto for Mac but when I sync to my ipad the info field goes back to the camera time ignoring "modify original files" in iPhoto for Mac?

I used "adjust date and time" and"modify original files" to correct the time of photos taken on a camera used in Peru which was set to UK rather than local time. which is 6 hours  behind. This was to bring them into line with shots taken with other cameras set to local time. This was using iphoto 08 on a Mac. I then synced to my iPad. The photos stayed in the correct order in photos but in iphoto (iOS version) the original dates appear (the camera dates) and so the photos are out of chronological order again. This looks like a bug but is there a fix?

don't know what you mean by "write to master" but speculate that it means modify the original times, in which case the taken times on the camera should no longer be present
No,I meant your using the option "modify original files" will do exactly that - change the capture date original master files stored in the iPhoto library. Only when you do that, the "date modified" of your original files will be changed as well, and it will now be the date of your manipulation of the capture date.
Oh - I hadnt considered that possibility - but of that were the case, why don't my manipulated photos go to the end of the sequence as I have done all the manipulation after the end of the holiday??
In photos the synced album maintains the chronological order which I set up on the mac by modifying the originals, as you said,
That is what the linked article is describing: "some apps may sort your photos in the order you specify in the app (such as iPhoto or Aperture"
The problem I have is that, in the album, iphoto (ipad) sorts them differently to both iphoto (Mac) and the photos tab on the ipad
In addition to albums and events, synced photos appear in a unified category called Photo Library (on iPad, this is the Photos tab). Photos are not duplicated. This category will also sort photos in ascending order by the date modified.
"on ipad this is the Photos tab" - but this displays as per the original sequence ignoring time adjustments - the manipulations seem to be ignored (but are reflected in the album in the photos tab) and the photos tahat have been modified stay in their original positiom - they don't get put the end
Because the library uses a different date - the date modified - the date of the last time the file has been changed in any way - any editing you do to your image, including adjust date and time will change the "date modified"
This may change the sorting of the database but it appears not to influence the order in the albums
In addition to albums and events, synced photos appear in a unified category called Photo Library (on iPad, this is the Photos tab). Photos are not duplicated. This category will also sort photos in ascending order by the date modified.
So how can i get my photos in date and time order in an album in iphoto for ipad?
    Thanks for your help

  • Problem In moving 1 image from 1 panel to next and maintain size of original image?

Why is it when i drag one image from the bottom panel over to another picture(solid color) i will only get 50% of the image and not the full image. Same thing when i copy and paste that image over the gray solid colored image also i will get only 50% of the image.  The original image of the cat(full view) is about 24.79%  and picture is 11.733 x 15.644 in size.  the other image (solid color) is at 43.63%  or 6.667 x 8.889". size is in inches. Do i have to resize the images and if so how as i am a stupie in this matter. The images are aligned side by side on the main panel or display.I am trying to place the cat over the gray background image  and with a layer mask delete the present baackground of the cat to uncover the gray of the bottom layer.  Thanks!!

Probably the resolution of each image has a different value. You can check this in Image>resize>image size. The resolution is expressed in px/in.
If you are attempting to place the cat on a plain gray background, try this:
Set your foreground color chip  (lower left) to the shade of gray desired
Open the picture with the cat
Using one of the selection tools (e.g. Selection brush, lasso), select the cat
Place the cat on a separate layer (Layer>new>layer via copy)
Place a blank layer between the background layer and the cat layer
Fill the blank layer with gray ( Edit>fill layer>foreground color)
Use the move tool to position the cat, and resize, if necessary, with the corner handles of the bounding box.

  • The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.

Hi to all, This is my first time here. I am having a problem that I've never had before. I am attempting to upload images to Flickr, which I do daily without trouble. However, this time I'm getting the message: "The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." I am doing searches on my MacBook by copying and pasting the jpeg name in to the finder and they seem to be gone. I have taken special care to file my photos in certain folders. Either I have inadvertanly deleted entire folders or something very odd has happened. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thank you

Hi, Thank you for the response.
    I'm on 10.7.5 OS
    Ver. 3.4.3 Aperture
I have a folder on my desktop named "photo imports" I insert my card to the reader on my MacBook Pro and copy the files in to a folder nested within the Photo imports according to which camera I am using or sometimes it is a special project. This folder is on my computer's hard drive.
I then go in to Aperture and click "Import" I select in the "Store Files" menu: "in their current location"
This has been working nicely for me. I use Time Machine on a somewhat regular basis and I also use other editing software like Picassa and View NX2 (Nikon software)
I suppose that it is possible that I accidently dragged my folder in to the trash, but I really do try to be careful about that sort of thing. I have gone back in to Time Machine and have been unable to find the files. It is vexing. My granddaughter has been asking me for those particular pictures and the only way to view them is in Aperture on my computer because I am unable to email or export them in any way.

  • Reducing the Resolution of a Referenced Original Image

I made the mistake of taking photos in very high resolution, and then importing the originals into my Aperture Library as referenced images.  Now my hard drive is completely full (and I've already disabled and deleted Previews), so I'm trying to reduce the resolution of the original images using Aperture.  After much reading, it seems that I'll need to Export Versions at a reduced size, Import the new versions into Aperture, and Delete the old originals.  Seriously?!?  Before I venture down this horrific path, please let me know if there is an easier solution.  Thanks!

As Terence said -- the easy thing is built-in and recommended: select the Images whose Originals you want to relocate, and relocate them to external drives.  External drives are _bargains_ right now.  I recommend -- seriously -- buying them in triplicate: one as your "working data" store, and two to use as back-ups (never have all three in the same physical location).
Storage is so cheap, on fact, that even though for this one set of pictures you recorded a higher resolution than you need, I still wouldn't bother "down-sizing" those Originals -- particularly if you have made _any_ changes via adjustments or metadata.  Change your camera settings, and just live with a little extra data spinning around.
Here is the page in the User Manual on relocating your Originals (click from the contents listed at the top).
Note, too, the following, from the page Basic Components of Aperture:
Using referenced images in your Aperture system provides a number of substantial benefits to your photography workflow. For example, you can incorporate your existing portfolio of images into Aperture without changing the current location of the files. Importing images by reference does not result in a duplication of your image files in the Aperture library, thus saving hard disk space. You can also connect and disconnect hard disks holding your referenced images’ masters as you need them. This allows you to keep masters for less-used images offline or to make specific types of images available for editing or adjustments as needed. Using referenced images in your Aperture system lets you build a flexible image management system customized to your work style. (Emphasis mine.)
For my personal Libary, I keep 4★, 5★, Portfolio Images, and anything recorded in the last 45 days on my laptop's system drive.  Every other Original is relocated to a 2 TB external drive.
I find Previews _very_ useful (both in and out of Aperture), and even rely on them as a sort of emergency back-up of last resort.  I recommend you rebuild yours.

  • Iphoto deleted all my images, im running on 9.5.1

iphoto deleted all my images, im running on 9.5.1. its been having issues recently but this time my laptops battery died in the middle of iphotos fixing itself and when my computer restarted everything is gone. Please help?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Can't delete photos using Image Capture

I just upgraded from an iPhone4 to 5s....all of a sudden I can't delete photos using Image Capture like I used to.  The "delete" menu item is grayed out.  The "delete after import" checkbox in the lower right is available, but I don't need to download all of these photos videos.  I poked around in the iPhone settings but didn't see anything which seems to control this.

Hey guys, I had the same problem on iOS 8.0.2, I couldn't delete any pictures from my Mac neither in Image Capture nor in iPhoto. I've just figured out how to resolve this. You have to disable iCloud Photo Library (Beta) under Settings > Photos & Camera. Since it seems to be an iOS 8 related issue, I'm not sure if I am referring to the same problem as in the original post but I thought I'll let you know anyway.

  • Keeping original image?

    Hello All,
if i have several edited versions of an image but do not want to keep the original (or at least I don't want it printed in a proofbook). Can I delete it? or would that effect the other images created from it?
And when I export versions, is there a short cut or would I have to deselect each of the originals (some have copies some do not) that I don't want printed or exported? Thanks for your help in advance!
    Mark

If you have more than one version of an image and delete the "original", you are only deleting a version. All versions are working off the same Master image, and that remains as long as there is at least one version. Aperture will warn you before you delete a master, but will immediately delelte a version w/o protest.
There are lots of ways to filter out images you don't wish to use: keywords, ratings, albums, smart albums..,

  • IPhoto for iOS : Impossible to delete modified pictures ! Bug ?

    Hi everyone,
Just downloaded iPhoto for iOS yesterday. Amazing apps except for one thing.
It seems that it's impossible to delete a modified picture and the modified pictures album !
I even tried to delete the original one in the Photos app but now I can't see my original (which is fine) but I'm still seeing the modified version !
Do I really need to delete the app and reinstall it in order to delete the picture ?
    Thanks.

    Are you sure ?
Couple of questions if so :
-> every time I make a change to a picture there's the "modified pictures" album that gets created. If I delete the original picture, the modified one stays here forever even if I revert to original. Impossible to delete ?
-> I you only have one picture in your library and you hide it, it's impossible to acces it again. I had to take another picture to show the first one ! It's not a bug ?

  • LR2 - burn to original image

Hi all, I am sure in the LR2Beta I could burn the changes made back into the original JPG image if I wanted (off a right click?). This was quite useful. However, I have bought LR2 and this function appears to have gone. I can export an image - but if I try to overwrite the original it fails. So, now I have to export to a different name and then delete the original. Am I missing something???

  • I seem to have lost my original images and unwanted images have moved into my library. I couldn't access lightroom 3 as usual and was provided a default option which I clicked. I ely heavily on lightroom and have spent countless hours fixing images, ple.

Hi, I seem to have lost my original images and unwanted images have moved into my library. I couldn't access lightroom as I would normally and was provided with a default option which I clicked. This all occured while I was trying to free up space on my computer while viewing saved images on my hard drive, which are linked up directly to a photoshop elements program. Please tell me this can be fixed.....

    Hi there,
I don't believe I did move or delete my catalogue. Where can I look for my catalog file. Why does my Lightroon now contain more images and ones I don't want on it, without my physically importing them?
    Thanks

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

    DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

  • When i open an mp3 file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

when I open a music file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place.  The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file.  You can delete the original if you wish.
