Deleting music from friend's iPod

A colleague of mine gave me his iPod to add some music to it from my computer.   He told me to first delete all the stuff on the iPod, and then he wants me to put some of my stuff onto it.
So I plugged his iPod into my computer, which opened up iTunes.   Then the computer asked me if I wanted to "sync" his iPod to my computer.   I then recalled that you can't just use an iPod on a different computer than what it's used to.    Something about having to erase everything that's on the iPod so it can then be synced to the new computer (in this case, mine).
So that sounded fine to me, since getting rid of his old stuff is what he wants me to do anyway.   But then I got a message saying that once I start the "sync," not only will it erase the contents of the iPod, but it will then add my entire music library to the iPod, which is NOT what I want to do.  I simply want to erase his iPod, and then, one at a time, add new tracks to it using my computer.   And I haven't even put most of those tracks on my computer yet.
Can someone please help me?  Thanks.

Hi all,
Just a clarification on the Maunal Sync that bwhite has explained:

It MAY still make you erase the music that’s already there (I’m sorry, I just can’t remember right now), it won't - once you say No to the Erase and Sync, the device profile screens display, and you can check Manual Sync as bwhite has indicated.
but after that, you should be able to connect to any iTunes and pick the songs you want from the library and drag it onto the iPod. The Manual Sync selected for the device on that computer will apply only to that computer. Each different computer that you hook it up to has to have the device profile set up for that computer. This design allows you to have different profiles for different computers. For example, on my husband's Macbook Pro, we have our devices set up to sync to everything but Photos, since that is where our iTunes library lives. On my Macbook Air, we have our devices set up to only sync with photos, since that is where our iPhoto library lives....

  • Deleting music from my iPhone/iPod Touch

How can I delete music from my iPhone/iPod Touch on iTunes? My original computer broke and I connect my devices to my laptop but I cannot delete to make room even when I activate my account to the laptop. It tells me non of my music is connected to the laptop and basically if I want room, I gotta restore my device but I don't want to lose all the stuff I have on it. Is there another way to delete music from the devices itself? I can delete podcast but not music...that's kind of dumb.

you can't.  The iPhone will only synch with ONE iTunes library at a time.

  • Cannot delete music from my new iPod nano

I have just bought an iPod nano 4GB and when I first got it I copied over almost a full 4GB of music to it. I have now ripped a lot of my cds in itunes and have about 20GB of music so I cannot copy the entire library, therefore I would like to copy everything over manually. I have set this option in the iPod preferences but it doesnt seem to do much. I cannot delete any of the music from the iPod. In iTunes, I go to my iPod and select a tune and press delete, then it prompts me about deleting it from the list. I press Yes and it says "do not disconnect" but then when I go to the iPod, the tune is still there. I even tried deleting all of the tunes at once but nothing.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Allan

I have managed to solve the problem. It appears that the file structure on the iPod had been corrupted so I used the iPod utility to erase the disk and install factory settings again. All seems to work fine now...

  • Cannot delete music from ipod touch, tried everything suggested thus far.

I have tried several suggestions up to this point and nothing has worked. It is my understanding that everything in My Music, (on my PC) transfers to the iTunes program, either manually or automaticlly. It is also my understanding that if I add or delete music from iTunes, that it will automatically be added or deleted on my iPod Touch, (4th gen). Well, none of this has proven to be true...at best, it is sporatic and frustrating. Any new ideas out there?

    Buy doing what?...
You need to be more specific about what you are trying. "I've tried several suggestions" tells us nothing. You've tried my suggestion (but I made two - dependant upon what you are doing), but you haven't told me how you are managing your iPod, are you using Sync or manually managing? Without that knowledge, everything else is meaningless.
If you are using Sync, and you have selected *Sync only ticked songs and videos,* then un-ticking a song and then performing a Sync will remove the song. So what are you doing?

  • Thoroughly angry and frustrated. I've run out of room and need to make more to add more songs. Once and for all, how do I, if I even CAN, delete music from my iPod Nano WITHOUT losing them from iTunes?

You should take the time to familiarize yourself with the documentation that is available.  You can "uncheck" a song in iTunes, and then do a manual update.

  • Can i delet music from my itunes but not from my ipod 120gb ipod

is there any way to delet music from my itunes library without the next time i attach my ipod 120gb it deleting it from my ipod because i have just run out of space on my hard drive and need to clear some space to put more music on my ipod. can any one help me?

Yes, however it's not necessarily a good idea to have the iPod holding the only copy of your media. It can become corrupt in which case it should be restored which involves deleting & replacing the contents. It may also easily be damaged, lost or stolen.
With this in mind, if you only delete media for which you have suitable backups, there are two possible apporaches. First you can switch to manually managing your music. Once you have transfered a file to the iPod you can delete the original from iTunes & your hard drive. There are certain benefits from automatic sysncing however which can be maintained with a different approach. You can delete original material from your hard-drive, leaving the entry in iTunes alone. When you come to sync iTunes will issue an error message to the effect that it cannot sync the missing files, *but it will not remove the exisitng copy on the iPod*. You can also suppress this error message.
In the long run however I would recommend that if space is becoming an issue you purchase an external drive and move your libray out to it. These are very affordable and would provide space to backup other important documents.

  • Deleting music from my ipod?

I am trying to delete music from my ipod and it will not let me. I have music that has been shared from my sons account or bough by him when he was still living here. I am being asked for his password but obviously do not have it. how do I clean up my music selection without messing with my purchases?
    Thanks

Just guessing but it sounds like it is synced to his account and not yours.  If you connect it to the computer it was activated with you should get an option to sync it to a differnt account.  i.e.  Yours, but when you do it will remove all the content from HIS account.  If nothing else you can do a full restore and when it comes up sync to your account.

  • Deleting music from the iPod

I tried to delete music from my iPod but all the music is greyed out. The music library and playlist is not greyed out so I went into the playlist and checked all the ones' I wanted to delete. I was able to delete the music on the playlist but not on the iPod. I had the iPod plugged in at the time, do I need to unplug it and then plug it back in again. Thanks

"I tried to delete music from my iPod but all the music is greyed out"
Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to syncronise (automatically update) with iTunes. If you want to access your iPod directly, drag songs to it, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and videos" in the iPod Summary tab and click Apply. The text will change from grey to dark and the padlock will disappear: Managing content manually on iPod
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • If I have home sharing can I delete music from my IPad without deleting it from my other devices such as IPhone and IPod?

If I have Home Sharing enabled, can I delete music from my IPad without deleting it from my IPhone and IPod?

Home sharing has no effect on deleting music from your iPad. If you delete music on your iPad it will have no effect on your other iDevices.
You cannot add or delete music with home sharing anyway. You can only share what is on one library on another device.

  • How do i delete music from my itunes account and my ipod nano 3rd gen

how do i delete music from my itunes account and my ipod nano 3rd gen

Are you wanting to delete it all or just certain tracks and content?
    If it's the latter...
How you delete content from your iPod depends on how it is set up to receive content from your iTunes library whether that be via automatic syncing or manual management.
For automatic syncing, you must reconfigure your settings so that the album/tracks/content you wish to remove is no longer configured to sync to your iPod.  For example, if the Sync only checked songs and videos option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab, make sure all the tracks for this album do NOT have a tick mark next to them in your iPod.  Then resync your iPod with iTunes.
If that isn't the case, you'll want to look at the iPod's Music configuration tab.  You can access this tab by selecting your iPod under Devices. This should bring you to theSummary tab over to the right.  Look for the Music tab along the top and select it.  Here you can configure how and what music syncs to your device.  If you make any changes to this tab, be sure to hit the Apply button in the lower right hand corner to sync the updated changes to your device.
Otherwise, if you manually manage your iPod's contents, you must manually remove content from it.  You can do this by plugging your iPod in and clicking the small black triangle next to your iPod from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  This will open up a submenu of content that is indented underneath the name of your device, so go ahead and click on Music (or whatever content you are wanting to remove).  Locate the track or tracks/content you wish to delete. Highlight them and hit the Delete key or choose Edit -> Delete.

Remove those songs from the list of items in iTunes set to sync with the iPod, or if syncing it manually, select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, find that music, and press Delete.

This is not a complicated problem. And you can easilly solve it. Here is the way about how to recover music from iPod.
1 Connect your iPod to your computer to restore custom ringtones and ringtones saved to the computer.
2 Click the "iPod" button in iTunes, or select your iPod in the sidebar if you enabled the option to show the sidebar.
3 Select the "Tones" tab, check the box for each ringtone you want to transfer to your iPhone, and then click "Sync."

    Any suggestions

Follow the instructions in this article and then delete the songs from your computer; they will not be deleted from the iPod automatically. You should have or make another copy of the songs before deleting them from the computer, as they can easily be lost if they are only on the iPod.
