Deleting my preview cache folder

hello, i have a similar problem to many that lightroom is now saying its having problems with the preview cache.....after reading some discussions i have found the folder and am going to delete it however i need to know if this is deleted witll all the photos i have in lightroom that have not been exported be deleted?
thanks URGENT!!!!

If previews are deleted, LR will re-create them when needed (LR cleans the oldest ones out anyway, after a period, by default).
Probably best to do this while LR is not running - whenever it starts up a Catalog which lacks an associated previews cache, a new empty one is automatically created straight away. Then as you start working in that and accessing images, it will get populated.
However, the previews are purely a convenience, for performance reasons. The actual LR editing is stored inside the Catalog as instructions - and does not depend on any bitmap preview.

  • Gmail stops working until i delete the offline cache folder. why?

Using the Apple Mail Client, my G-Mail account stops updating every couple weeks.  I found through forums that if I delete the offline cache folder (it's hidden, library-mail-account) everything goes back to normal.  Why is this happening and why hasn't it been fixed?  I'd appreciate any insight!

    Hi Eric,
Since it doesn't happen to gMail on several Macs & OSX versions from 10.4.5 to 10.7.4 & beyond, I suspect Disc corruption, or possibly RAM, have you checked either?

  • Okay to delete files in Cache Fold

Is it okay to delete the files/folders under Program files/Creative/Software Update/Cache?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Peter,
Yes, it's safe to delete that. That's a temp folder to store the updates you have downloaded when you use the Software Autoupdate from the Creative website.

  • When I try to open my Lightroom 5 program it comes up with this message, "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit."  How do I fix this?

Can someone please let me know how I can fix this error and open my Lightroom?  Thanks.

You might be quicker help posting in the LR forum rather than the ACR forum, but I believe the way to fix this is to delete the preview cache.
    Find your catalog folder.
    Close LR.
Within the catalog folder, delete the FOLDER called Catalog-Name Previews.lrdata
    Start LR.

  • LR encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.

I have the 30 day trial version of Lightroom.  I was able to use it for one week, but the past 1.5-2 weeks, it has been locked up and giving this error message.  How do I resolve the problem?  And how do I reset the 30 day free trial?  I would like to have time using the product, before deciding on the annual contract.
"LR encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.  Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches."
    Thank you.

Delete the preview cache from the Lightroom folder in your Pictures folder if you used the default placement. It has the extension .lrdata.
You cannot reset the trial period.

Upgraded to 5.4 when opening lightroom get a message "encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and need to quite" tried this several time but get the same error message.  Says Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem the next time it launches but that is not happening.  How do it fix this?

Delete the preview cache using your operating system. It is a folder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA. Do not delete the Lightroom catalog, which ends with .LRCAT

  • Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit,... Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches

I have restarted lightroom and still get the same result, I have also fully uninstalled  lightroom and then re-installed  3 times  without success

You do not want to delete your catalog file Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat with extension .lrcat. This will cause you to lose all of your image editing information.
Locate and rename the Previews Cache folder named Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata by adding a .old to the extension (Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata.OLD). Restore the original catalog file from the Recycle or Trash bin if possible. See procedure here:

  • Lightroom 4.4 64-bit won't start-up; preview cache error

the error message is "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.  Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches"  But it never gets past this screen regardless of now many times I try!

Delete your preview cache. It is a folder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA, it is in the same folder as your Lightroom catalog. Do not delete anything else. Do not delete the LR catalog.

  • Lightroom and preview cache and other related issues.

So I went to open up LR on Friday afternoon (1/30/15) and it wouldn't open. I can't think of anything I had done differently to it, nothing new with my computer. But when I clicked to open it, I got a screen that read, "The Lightroom catalog named 'Lightroom 5 Catalog' cannot be opened because another application already has it opened." I sought some outside advice. I made sure there was nothing even open in the task manager (after having already shut down and re-booted my computer a couple of times) and then opened my most recent backup catalog. I also deleted the "lock" file.
I was then able to import new photos to LR, but noticed that one folder was missing--the one from 1/29/15. That is likely the last folder I was working in before this whole mess started. After doing some clicking, I could see that those pictures were still in a catalog and on my hard drive, but I could not open a catalog with them in it. If I tried, I got a screen that read, "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit."  On the advice of a computer guy and with the reassurance that I can always restore if necessary, who told me to delete the preview cache file. I thought that's what I did, but now I'm not sure. I deleted a huge file folder entitled "Lightroom 5 Catalog previews.lrdata.  This did allow me to open LR, but I had a few days' worth of missing folders and decided to restore what I had just done and seek advice again. Now I'm being asked this if I want to merge the deleted folder with a previews folder from 8/23/13.
Do I want to merge these? The August 2013 date is about the time I purchased LR. I have done nothing since seeing this.  So I first ask if I should merge these and restore the files OR just keep the deleted previews folder in the recycle bin, then have LR find the missing folders.  And secondly, what the heck happened to make this happen in the first place?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Thank you for your reply.  Very simple and helpful!
However, I am now a bit lost as my catalog is messed up.  I am missing folders in the catalog that I have open.  When I helped LR find them on my hard drive, I got a popup question that read, "The selected folder or one of its subfolders is already in Lightroom.  Do you want to combine these folders.  I clicked "Merge" and then the folder completely disappeared from the list of folders.  I still see it in the correct place on my hard drive, but I can't get to it from LR now.  I assume those missing folders (and another folder full of pics I imported but now don't see listed in the catalog) are in another catalog as I think I have been working with the backup catalog that I opened at the beginning of this whole mess.  Can you help me get everything current and in one catalog again?  Thank you.

    Yes:
Step 1: Delete the preview cache.
    That's it!
So, the trick is to find the preview cache.
    This document gives location:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-41.html
To be clear: it's a folder in with your catalog and you want to delete the whole folder but nothing else.
If your catalog file path is "X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog.lrcat", then the preview cache "folder" will be:
    X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog Previews.lrdata
So the trick is to find your catalog file, and since Lr won't open your catalog and run, you can't use it to find out.
But you should be able to find it by searching your disks for *.lrcat files - do you know how to do that?
    Which OS?
If you know the name of the catalog it will help, but also: it's probably NOT in with your program files.
UPDATE: The above-mentioned document gives default name and location for preview cache, so if you haven't overridden the default, it should be right where that document said it would be - is it? (of course you need to know your user name too, but presumably you do, no?).

Any help with easy to understand directions would be greatly appreciated. So far I have not been able to understand forum threads.
    Thank you!

Locate and rename the Previews Cache folder named Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata by adding a .old to the extension (Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata.OLD).

Do NOT delete your catalog file Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat with extension .lrcat, which contains your image editing information.

  • I am getting an error when reading the preview cache and the program shuts down.

I had to reload Lightroom on a new computer and after I did that it gives me an error when reading from its preview cache and then it shuts the program down.  How can I fix this problem?

Delete the preview cache ... it is a folder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA in the same folder as your catalog file.

  • I'm getting message Lightroom encountered error when reading from its preview cache needs to quit. Lightroom 5 on Windows 7

I'm getting message Lightroom encountered error when reading from its preview cache needs to quit. Lightroom 5 on Windows 7

To delete the preview cache, do this:
    1. Quit Lightroom.
    2. In your Operating System, locate your Lightroom catalog. Typically catalogs are in /Pictures/Lightroom on Mac and My Pictures\Lightroom on Windows.
    3. Find the folder whose name ends with "Previews.lrdata" and delete it. (note, you may also have a folder whose name ends with "Smart Previews.lrdata." You shouldn't need to delete that one.)

  • "lightroom encountered an erorr when reading from it's preview cache and needs to close"

I can't get rid of this error message.  I have moved/deleted the preview cache..did not help.  I then deleted all the other files in the "Lightroom" folder...doesn't help.  Please help!!  thank you in advance

Thanks everyone. Just for future people who may read this... Turns out..LR had created another catalog on my C:/ drive that I didn't know about.  (My main catalog is located on a separate drive.) So, when I was doing all of these steps to my main catalog, it didn't work.  Problem was on the C:/ drive.   I still wasted a ton of time talking to support and the person was not knowledgeable.  He/She kept telling me that my catlog was corrupted even though the error message clearly stated it was the preview cache.  All of these software companies need to a) bring their support desks back into this country, b) train the people to actually know the product inside and out.  I've had to contact 3 different companies for support over the past few weeks and all of them gave me useless generic answers that you can find on their websites.  Frustrating.  Sorry for the rant and thanks again everyone.

  • Can not launch lightroom says error when reading its preview cache

I can not launch Lightroom is puts up a error message that says it encountered an error when reading its preview cache and goes in to a loop that keeps closing the program
I have restarted my comp 4 times same this each time
I can't find any trouble shooting and when I try and download lightroom again it just puts me back at the creative cloud desktop which I can't click in anything

You need to delete the preview cache. LR will automatically create new previews.
Read here and here are the locations. Don't touch the *.lrcat file.
