Deleting old Adobe Reader applications...

I have downloaded the newest Adobe Reader application but still show multiple older versions of Adobe Reader(7.08 & 8) in my Applications folder.
Can I delete and trash these without losing some necessary files to run the 9 version only...?
I also run Classic 9 OS occasionally for older applications and in that Application folder there is an Acrobat Reader 5.0 which I don't know if I need to have or if I can update it to a newer version that would work with Classic 9.

I would say to play it safe you might want to delete the Acrobat files (maybe archive them just to be safe) before doing your upgrade. I don't know but it is possible the Acrobat Reader installer may have an uninstall button. Programs like Acrobat and Office like to put files all over the place so if you really want to make sure all the old is gone you would need to do a lot of manual weeding. However, it is slightly possible that when you run the installer it might ask if you want to get rid of earlier versions. Try running the installer part way and see what options it offers. Usually you can cancel before installing if you decide you need to do something before installing.
Now, there's OS9 and there's Classic. OS9 is when you boot to OS9 and OS9 is totally in control. When you boot to OSX and run Classic, it is OSX that is really in control and it is pretending (emulating) OS9 +at the same time+. If you start a program written for OSX while in Classic it will just start the program in OSX. If you actually boot to OS9 then it is extremely unlikely it will run the OSX version. There were some programs written around the transition period that would run on both, but I doubt any recent release would. The bottom line is, if all you do is run Classic then you could also get rid of your version 5 too.

  • How to delete old Adobe reader plugin from Safari?

    Hi,
I can no longer view pdfs within Safari.
I deleted Adobe reader 7.0 and installed 11. Now Safari does not open embedded pdf's anymore. I suspect Safari is looking for reader 7.0. I think so, because in Safari>prefs>security>Internetplugins there is a list where both versions of reader are visible, the old version seems to be the active one.
I probably better had not deleted Reader 7.0 by hand...
How do I make Safari understand it should use Adobe Reader 11.0?
    Thanks,
    Wim

    Exit Safari.
In Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, under DEVICES, check the top box which will be your assigned computer name. This will make it available to you in an open Finder window.
Open a new Finder window, scroll the left panel down until you see the DEVICES section, and single-click on the name of your computer. The contents of the main Finder window will change and you will see a network globe, and for our focus, a silver icon of a disk drive with your boot drive name — probably Macintosh HD.
Double-click Macintosh HD. Double-click Library. Scroll down until you see Internet Plug-Ins, and double-click that folder. Holding your shift-key down, select the following icons:
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
Now, with both icons selected, right-click to bring up the contextual menu and choose Copy 2 Items. Then, click once on your desktop, press and hold the option key with right-click. This time, you will see Move 2 Items Here. Select this and the plug-ins will be moved to your Desktop.
You now have a choice of default Safari PDF viewing, or if you prefer the Adobe PDF plug-ins, reinstall Adobe Reader 11.0.04 (as of this post date) to reinstate the Acrobat PDF browser plug-ins. Once this is working, drag the Adobe plug-ins on your Desktop to the trash.

  • Cannot open any pdf or delete or update old adobe reader

I am having the same issues as MANY others.  Obviously Adobe has been corrupted or hacked.  DAYS of this already.  Cannot open pdf files or any other downloads.  Errors of all sorts come up when trying to update or delete and re-download.  Why can't you fix this issue already??  Work needs to be done, many are time sensitive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I just check that you are running the latest services pack for Windows XP (SP3)?  There is also a repair option for Adobe Reader, which under Windows XP can be found at Control Panel->Add Remove Programs.  If you try that, it might clean up something that has somehow become corrupted.  Finally, the Adobe Labs site has a cleaner (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html), which will clean Adobe Reader 9 and X (but not XI I believe).  Depending on your version you might try that.  If you use the cleaner, uninstall Reader first, run it and then reinstall reader.
I'll check back on the forum to see if this helped.
    Thanks,
    Matthew

  • Help with uninstalling "old" Adobe Reader

Since I trust anything Adobe 100%, I did not hesitate to follow a link (contained in "Adobe for Andoid" email from you to me) to install Adobe Reader on my new NOOK HD+ 32.  IT IS A "BAD" LINK, details were forwarded to Adobe by Chrome Support 7-2-13.  What I have been told from Barnes and Noble, Chrome, Google and Adobe "HELP" Professionals  is to uninstall the download.
You'd think even a 56 year old tech-novice could handle this, right?!?  I Can't because the "Unfortunately System UI message freezes everything up until I respond "okay".... Between my "okay" and typing the "uninstall "  address to my Search bar, the "UI' message has taken over my screen and has frozen every  click I know how to make.  After doing this 5+times, all of the icons begin to shake and then the page completely turns itself off.
I am hoping someone is able to advise me how to "uninstall" from somehere other than my Nook.
    Thank you very much,
    Mizrallen623

It's really hard to say what's going on without knowing more about the system. It's possible that the program is generating an FDF (Forms Data Format) file and launches it, causing the PDF to load and populate with the data in the FDF. Folks have reported that recent changes to Reader have broken this type of thing. So you may need to go back to an even earlier version, such as 9.2 or 9.3, or somehow contact the developers of the application for help.
Is this something that happens in a web browser?

  • Deleting an Adobe Reader 9 programs folder

I've run reader 9 for some time and the installation was originally created under WinXP.  The installation was customised in that the programs folder was (for a variety of reasons) on a separate logical drive.  There were a number of other programs folders on that drive.
I recently upgraded to Win 7 SP1, which destroyed the XP c:drive and active partition, and created a new one.  It was stated by MS that this upgrade would require all the software I wanted to retain be re-installed.  After the OS upgrade, I chose to do that by installing the reader 9 software in a new folder on the the same programs drive, having first taken the precaution of renaming the old folder (to Adobe Reader 9_old).  The new installation went well, and it updated to reader 9.5.0 after the install was completed.
At this point, I proceeded to delete - or try to delete - the older programs folder, and the system consistently refused to allow it.  A screen dump of the error message is included here.  Nothing I attempted - remove the read-only marking on the folder, change the user security controls to full control, and run as administrator - allows the delation to occur.  This did not happen when the folder name was changed.  Note that this is the only folder in that programs drive that this occurs for.  Because of Windows 7 features, some software I no longer need and I have deleted those program folders successfully.
Because of the way the Win7 upgrade and the re-install of Adobe reader 9 worked, this _old folder and its contents has no links to the operating system.  It seems clear therefore that the original Adobe install has marked the folder in some way that OS is responding to when delete is requested, even in the various admin conditions outlined.  The Adobe software is still on the PC, I just want to recover the 145Mb in this old folder.  Can you suggest a folder deletion process that would work and achieve that end without re-loading the entire OS and starting again?
    Davidk10

I assume it was placed on your desktop so it could be deleted by you. If they did it they way things are frequently done, it would be installed in your root directory where you would unlikely see and and stay there forever.

  • Can I delete previous Adobe Reader downloads when a new has been updated.

Can I delete prvious downloads of Adobe Reader as my computer is so slow.

As I understand things, if you uninstall previous versions of Reader in Windows, you can ruin the remaining one(s). I would suggest removing all versions of Reader and then doing a fresh install of the version you want to keep. But I have my doubts that having several versions of Reader can slow your computer very much.

  • Text object gets deleted in Adobe Reader 11

In Adobe Acrobat X i was inserting text objects to one of the pdf . It opens properly in Adobe Reader 10, but in Adobe Reader 11, when I click on that PDF file, text objects which i have edited gets deleted.
Here is the source pdf file link which i am editing(http://incometaxsoft.com/pdf/Src.pdf)
This the pdf file  link which is already edited and for which text gets deleted when double click on pdf in adobe reader 11(http://incometaxsoft.com/pdf/result.pdf)
So how can i prevent text object from deleting?

The problem is not only seen in Reader XI. It is also seen in Acrobat Pro 9 and 10. The problem is caused by incorrect modifications to the PDF.
It breaks this principle: if software creates an appearance stream for a "standard" annotation it must match the standard appearance of the annotation exactly. Software which supports annotation is free to use EITHER the appearance stream OR the annotation dictionary to show it on screen, and it is not predictable which one is used.
The problem is that the original PDF contains a "FreeText" annotation with the text "WWWW" in top left. When you say the text is deleted that is not a full description of the problem. The new text disappears but the original WWWW reappears.
This has started happening in Reader XI because it now has support for editing FreeText annotations, so it is doing the correct thing and rebuilding it from the dictionary.
The editing solution is simple and neat. Unfortunately it is also fundamendally flawed because
    (a) the original annotation dictionary is not changed to match
    (b) in any case the free text annotation cannot express a detailed filling in of multiple locations
If this had been tested using Acrobat the problem would have been seen before.
I recommend you add actual page contents to the page.

  • Cannot open adobe reader application

    Hi,
I cannot open adobe reader X application, it returns error message "0x8d286a30, cannot 'written'". I tried to uninstall and reinstall the reader but it doesn't work. please help, thanks.

I don't know the answer to your problem, but possibly someone else can, if you give more information:
    - what is your OS & version?
    - what is your installed Reader version?

  • Create New User--delete old user-- Lose applications? (giving iMac away)

I want to give my iMac to a friend. I want to just create a new user for him, then delete me to erase my info and files.. If I do that will my bootcamp and Windows, and iLife, and applications all remain for him? I hope so!
I can erase my mobile me, mail, and itunes account. Basically like a pseudo "wipe clean". Any suggestions?
I would rather not re-install. It would be nice for him to have it up and running already.
    Thanks

After you delete your personal files, you can use Disk Utility to 'Erase Free Space'. When you trash files in OS X and empty the trash, the files are no longer accessible (and they become free space that may be reused) but they are still on your hard drive and could be recovered by someone with the necessary software. By doing +Erase Free Space,+ OS X will write 0's over all free space, eliminating the ability to recover the deleted files. Read the Help topics in Disk Utility for more info.
For the extra paranoid, you can specify doing this 7x or even 35x when you erase free space in Disk Utility.
There is no need to completely wipe out the drive & reinstall. Even if you did a complete reinstall, if you don't do a secure erase first those data files may actually still be recoverable because the free space they occupied previously likely won't get reused during the installation.
