Deleting Old e-mail addresses in MAIL

I cannot delete old/unusable e-mail addresses when I type a name in the address bar. The name will appear with two three, or more addresses, maybe only one of which is usable (and is often on the bottom of the list).
Is there any way to DELETE the old addresses (which I have already done in my ADDRESS BOOK)??
But it doesn't get them out of the system. They still appear the next time I address an e-mail.
OR if you can't get rid of them, can they be ordered so that the workable one appears FIRST in the list?

Hi,
I'm not fully sure of your problem, and since none of the apple wizards have responded yet, and you may be eager to solve your problem, I dear proposing to start with taking out your 'com.apple.mail.plist'-file from: Home/Library/Preferences
Drag it to your desktop, and rename it - add a letter or two, maybe duplicate it too, and put the duplicate in trash for keeping. You will loose settings, mailboxes, and the inbox may not display all mails. The file: com.apple.mail.plist, will regenerate, and Mail will open in default state. Start playing around with Mail, and try to reproduce initial errors. If this does not fix your problem, just trash the new com.apple.mail.plist, and replace it with the old one, renaming it back to: com.apple.mail.plist. The backup in the Trash-folder can also be deleted, if you have no further use of it as an backup.
I check back in later, to see if you decided to try this. Best of luck.

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

  • In apple maps, i can't delete old and wrong addresses

On iPhone 6, in apple maps, i can't delete old and wrong addresses. How can I get it to delete addresses?

When you open Maps touch the search bar and on the resulting screen you'll see Favorites. Touch Favorites and in that resulting screen you'll see a Clear button at the top. Then click Done to return to the map.

  • Won't delete old e-mails on Yahoo app

In the past week my wife's Galaxy S III had an issue crop up with her Yahoo mail app. She had some old e-mails saved in a folder appear in her InBox. When you open them to look at the subject matter, it's blank except for the subject. Since it was blank she decided to delete it. After it has been deleted it reappears in the InBox after it has refreshed. She has about 6 old emails like this that won't delete, I even tried moving them back to their original folder and moving them to Spam, with the same outcome. It logged on to her account on our home computer and it shows everything is normal, none of those emails show in the inbox. It's like two separate accounts. I stopped by my local Verizon store and after 45 minutes to an hour the Rep. there gave up and suggested that I contact Verizon CS Level 2 support to see if they can help. They're my next stop, unless someone here has a solution.

Thanks for contacting the community forums, kscfire. I had a similar situation on my Android device. I was able to log into a computer to delete the email that kept showing  a subject but empty body.
You can also clear the cache for the email http://bit.ly/UasC7T to see if that works. Once cleared, power off/on and check the email box again.
Worst case scenario, remove the email app and reinstall it.

  • Delete old e-mail account icon

The Icons at the bottom on main screen are Messages, E-Mail (new account), E-Mail (old account), SMS and MMS, Contacts, and Calendar. I want the icon for the old E-Mail account deleted, permanently off my phone. Completely gone everywhere from the phone. Any info on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • How can I delete old e-mail addresses?

I have the original iPhone and I want to know if there is a way to delete e-mail addresses from the "to:" drop down. It gets bothersome when they are not your contact's e-mails but instead e-mails addresses of people you have no longer contact with.

All email recipients are stored by the iPhone in what is called a list of previous recipients. The "To drop down" or autofill feature pulls from your iPhone's address book and the list of previous recipients. At the present time, there is not a way to access the list of previous recipients to remove previous recipients from the list, or add a previous recipient to the iPhone's address book that is not already entered.
The only way to completely purge the list of previous recipients at the present time is restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. The list of previous recipients is included with your iPhone's backup.

  • How to delete old e-mail addresses?

Sorry if this has already been addressed...but since I can't search the forums right now.....
I accidentally typed in an incorrect e-mail address for someone, and actually tried to use it a couple of times. I realized my mistake, and then corrected the e-mail address in my Contacts. Now, when I try to send an e-mail to Tom, when I start to type his name, it still gives me the option of choosing both the bad address, and the correct address. Does anyone know if there is a way to permanently erase the "bad" address? Again, the bad address is no longer anywhere in my contacts. Thanks in advance!

I also have been looking for a way to do this. Calling iPhone support didn't yield any answers.

All pretty much say the same thing. I know doing a restore would work, but that seems pretty overkill for a mistyped email address, right?
On the other hand... if it gets rid of this frustration...

  • I want to sync my I phone user name (my current e-mail address) with my iPad, PC user name (old e-mail address.) If I delete that current address in the iPhone, won't I also be deleting it in my other devices? They are synced. I don't want to lose it

I want to sync my I phone user name (my current e-mail address) with my iPad, PC user name (old e-mail address.) If I delete that current address in the iPhone, won't I also be deleting it in my other devices? They are synced. I don't want to lose it. I just want to get it out of the way on my iphone so it doesn't confuse the transfer of ID names and then I want it back again..      I tried deleting the cloud account, being told the current e-mails would be spared. But all it did was pop up a prompt asking me for the password to my still current email ID. So I assume now that I have to go to mail and get rid of the e-mail account. But I'm scared I'll lose everything in my other devices too.

You can change the email address you use as your apple ID. this doesn't mean you have to delete the old email address as email.
When you delete an email from your device, it is only removed from the device, it does not delete your emails or the email account.

  • Mail - how to delete old email addresses from FROM box?

    I'm using:
    Mail 4.5
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
iCloud IMAP for my mac.com/me.com email address
When I compose new messages, in the FROM box are listed old mac.com email alias addresses that I have deleted.
I tried deleting the icloud IMAP account within mail, then recreating that account.  But still, those old alias email addresses still appear.  And one of them has the name of my ex-girlfriend, so I really want that off my screen, haha!
How can I delete those expired email address from the from box?
Otherwise, my iCloud IMAP account works fine.
    Thanks for your help!
    Bill

    Thanks, Kurt.
Yes, those are email aliases (that I created on mobileme) that I no longer I have.  I still have the main mac.com address, but today I deleted the aliases through iCloud.
And thanks.  But I already tried that.  After deleting the iCloud aliases on the iCloud website, I then deleted the iCloud account in preferences.  And in the FROM box, ALL the icloud email aliases and main mac.com addresses disappeared.  But when I recreated the iCloud acount within preferences, all those aliases reappeared in the from box.
I did another test - I set up the email account on my friend's computer (also running 10.6.8).  And same problem.  So looks like the problem is on iCloud's end.
Meaning that though I deleted those aliases from the iCloud website, when I create an email account from within Mail, it gets the info from the iCloud server and that hasn't been updated to reflect deleting those aliases.
    Hm.

Remove the old address from the previous recipients list under 'Window' on the Mail menubar.
