Deleting old info

No device
I have a Palm Tungsten E2.  I have several years (probably 5 or 6) of appointments, data, info, etc. on it.  I'd like to delete previous years of calendar info especially.  Is there some way of doing that without deleting all of the individual entries separately?  I would like to keep 6 months to a year's worth of info, but delete everything beyond that.

One way of doing this is to Hotsynch your E2 to Palm Desktop on a PC. Once the data is in Palm Desktop you can edit the calendar by highlighting the data and deleting it from PD. Once deleted in Palm Desktop, change the hotsynch conduits to desktop overwrites handheld and synch to the E2. this will update the calendar on the handeld.
Another option would be to purge old records from your E2. Look in the user manual on page 153. You have the option to purge events older than 1 Week, 2 Weeks, 3 Weeks, 1 Month. You would need to select the last date of the month you want to keep and purge all records prior to that date then select the time frame.
I would suggest the first method because you have the option to export the data prior to deleting in case you make a mistake and need to restore the data. On the handheld you would not have this option unless you install a program like NVbackup and save all your data to an SD card first.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
http://kb.hpwebos.com/wps/portal/kb2/common/article/28734_en.html
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

I have apps that needs to be updated that shows my old account. How do I delete this info without losing my purchases?

iTunes purchases cannot be transferred between accounts. If you no longer wish to use the old account at all, you should delete those apps and repurchase them with the new account.
On the other hand, you could also (and should have before creating a new account - contact iTunes support to deal with account security: https://getsupport.apple.com/Issues.action

  • Deleting old messages in Messages Beta

On the iPad and iPhone, deleting old messages is easy. On Mac, the "cut" key is inactive and whatever I do (including deleting iChat files storing messages) old messages keep coming back every time opening Messages Beta. How do I get rid of them once for all?

    HI,
From within the app it is not possible in the Beta
However using the Finder as the "Front" app use the Go Menu and Hold the ALT key and then chose th Library.
In the Library go to the Messages folder and delete chat.db  - just drag it to the Trash

  • Can't delete old iTunes after Mountain Lion install

I updated my Macbook Pro (late 2008 version) to Mountain Lion and everything was working great until I tried to open iTunes from the Dock and got a message about it being unable to open, investigated the Applications folder and discovered that I now have two versions of iTunes, 10.6.3 and 10.7. 10.6.3 is in the applications folder but 10.7 is in a sub-folder within Applications. In the past I've organized apps in folders according to subject - home office, internet, graphics, games, etc., and have had no problem deleting old versions of Apple apps after system updates by either dragging them to the trash or dragging the updated version into the applicable folder and using the "replace" function. Now I cannot move either the new or old version of iTunes to trash or between folders. I'm getting a message "iTunes cannot be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X".. I've searched these forums and googled the question, and the only solutions I've found have addressed Windows PCs.
From checking the "Get info" panel I can tell that the 10.6.3 version was installed prior to installing Mountain Lion, and 10.7 appears to have been installed either with Mountain Lion itself or in a system update shortly thereafter. I tried unlocking 10.6.3 in the Get Info panel, but that didn't allow me to move 10.6.3 to the trash.
    Thanks for any help.

Sure, but its the best you learn how to use the terminal. OS X is Unix and the most advanced tasks can't be done in the graphical enviroment:
    1. Open Terminal (You should startet in your "home" directory, this is the default)
    2. Type: mdls /Applications/iTunes.app (This will output a lot of information)
    3. Look for the last keyword "kMDItemVersion", it should show the program version (e.g. "10.7")
    4. From now on what to do depends on the position of the iTunes version you want to delete. If this is the most recent version you will leave this file alone. If this is an older version of iTunes you will want to delete it. So there is a decision to make.
    4a. Leave this file
    or
4b. Delete this file with: rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app (maybe the permissions don't allow this to do, I could not test it)
    5. After that you could use the finder to move your regular iTunes version to your desired position
    6. If you most recent version is in an other directory, e.g. /Applications/Music/iTunes.app, you have to do the steps above with this path
It makes sense to locate first the iTunes version you want to delete. You can get this information with the showed mdls command or with the information dialog of Finder. Click in Finder the particular iTunes icon once, so it is selected, show the information dialog (cmd+i).

  • Deleting old versions of Ipod

Can deleting old versions of Ipod for Windows in Add/Remove programs safely free up disk space without harming the library? I need to make space on my hard drive! Any info would help. Thanks!

If you have itunes 7, you can delete/remove all of them. If you want to be on the safe side, remove all but the most current one (aka 2006-06-28)

  • Delete old calendar items on iCloud

    Hello,
we are using the calendar on iPad Mini synchronizing the entries with iCloud. We can deactivate old calendar items but this doesn't delete them. How can we delete old entries from the calendar (e.g. older than 3 months) and therefore, also delete them from the iCloud storage?
    Kind regards,
    Mike

On the next sync, you can choose to replace all events on the iphone.
This option is found at the bottom of the info tab in itunes.
Befor you use this, make sure that any events on the iphone have ben moved to the computer.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello there, Syd_ma22.
The answer to how to delete a song on your phone in iOS7 is found on page 62 of the iPhone User's Manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
    Specifically:
Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

Change the email on the old account to another new, current email address.
An email address can only be linked to one Apple ID.
It is possible to have content from multiple Apple ID's on a single iDevice.

  • "deleting old backups" for 24 hours so far...

Our Time Capsule is working non-stop for 24 hours now to back up my computer... I'm wondering whether I should let it continue chugging away or interrupt it. Any ideas? Here's the background info. (All OSs are up to date.)
We have two 4-5 year old MBPs backing up to our original terabyte Time Capsule (serial number fits the recall but we have not had the problems listed in that recall). Last I looked (not recently), less than half the space was used (the "Estimated size of full back up" for just my own MBP is 203.43 GB). Yesterday morning, I decided to add a second "User" to my MBP and store movies in iTunes there for easy access through HomeSharing for our new Apple TV. I added about 25 mp4 movies to the new User's side of my MBP. Then, before continuing with the addition of all the rest of my husband's movies, I hit the "Back up now" button on my side of the MBP (I do it manually every couple of days rather than the automatic hourly; it usually takes well under an hour to backup) . That was 24 hours ago. Since then, the Time Capsule has been alternating between "deleting old backups", "Preparing___ items", and "Cleaning up". 24 hours ago it said "Available: 89 GB of 998.06 GB". Now it says "102.55 GB of 998.06 GB."
Should I just let it continue doing whatever it's doing (for days?) or should I interrupt it?
And once I can move forward with this project, is there a way to tell it NOT to back up the iTunes full of movies on the new User side? I know I can tell it not to backup iTunes under Options in the Time Machine Preferences but it seems like that means it won't back up my own iTunes...including all my iPhone and iPad data and info...
Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.

There are now 5 Users on the MM: the User I made last night when I started the MM, the one that was on my MBP and the new one I had to make since neither name was acceptable, plus the extra User that I created on my MBP 2 weeks ago at the start of all of these issues and the renaming of that User. I only want 2 Users.
You can delete unwanted users, via +System Preferences > Accounts.+
ALL my bookmarks in Safari came over -- one of the things I wanted to be sure didn't make it to the new machine...
That can be deleted, too, if you want: +*<home folder>/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist+*
The Library is full of my old MBP stuff, including all my email accounts. I know it said the Library would come over automatically (it was not a choice in the Migration Assistant).
    Correct. Also can be deleted.
Can I wipe it all to a clean slate and start over???
Yup. Let me be sure I have the right scenario, so as not to lead you astray: You want to wipe the Mini, and transfer some or all of the stuff from the last backup of the old Mac (and those backups are still intact; no other backups have been done to that drive since then).
If all that's true, then start the Mini up from the proper Install disc, for the major version of OSX the old Mac was on (Leopard or Snow Leopard). If it's Leopard, do an +Erase and Install;+ if it's Snow Leopard, erase the internal HD first (see the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]), then quit Disk Utility and install OSX.
When your Mac restarts, after selecting your language +Setup Assistant+ will ask if you want to transfer your data. That's very much like +Migration Assistant,+ but before you set up any user accounts, so it should bring everything you select over just as it was. You have the same selection options as with Migration Assistant. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).
If the version of OSX you installed is behind the one from your backups, update it before trying any apps. If it was on Snow Leopard 10.6.4, download and install the "combo" update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility afterwards
If that's not what you want to do, or I've got the scenario wrong, please clarify.
(By the way, please click +My Settings+ at the right of this page and supply your hardware details and OSX version, so it will show up on all your posts and we won't have to ask).

  • Want to start new admin account and delete old one in 10.3.9: recommended?

I just bought a used iMac G4 running 10.3.9. It works fine, but -- being a used computer -- the main admin account has the previous owner's username and password. (And most importantly, the "Short Name" -- which can't be changed -- is the previous owner's personal name.)
I have the password for the existing admin account -- no problem there. But I would like to start a new admin account, with a "Short Name" and password of my choosing, rather than forever be tied down to using the previous owner's account.
I know how to start a new admin account, customized as I like -- again, that's not the problem. The question is: what would happen if, after I created a new admin account, I then deleted the original admin accounr created by the previous ower?
    Is this possible?
    Is this recommended?
Will it screw up "permissions" and "ownership" of existing files/applications, etc.?
I actually went through this process before, with a different used Mac, and I remember encountering some problems afterward, that I'd like to avoid this time around.
(Also, I should mention that the install disks did not come with the computer, so I can't re-install the OS without buying new disks.)
    So:
Should I start a new admin account, then delete the old admin account?
Should I start a new admin account, and just leave both accounts on the machine but ignore the old one?
Or should I just leave things as is and endure having a goofy "Short Name" on my account?

OK, I took the plunge and it seemed to work out OK.
I created a new account. Then I marked it as an "Administrator" account (a trivial detail that I actually couldn't figure how to do for a few confusing minutes). Then I selected the new account to be the account that the computer automatically logs in to when it starts up. Then I restarted, and was logged into the new admin account. Then -- crossing my fingers -- I deleted the old admin account (and kept the deleted account info just in case). I then restarted again and, as hoped, everything started up fine, I was automatically logged into my new account with my desired "Short Name" etc., and when I checked, the old account was gone.
So far, everything has worked fine since then. So, I declare this issue resolved.

  • Ola Hallengren maintenance solution TSQL script not deleting old backup files from my local SQL server

I have looked on Ola's site (https://ola.hallengren.com/frequently-asked-questions.html) and I did see this:
DatabaseBackup is not deleting old backup files. What could the problem be?
Verify that the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent service accounts have full control of the backup directory.
If that directory is a network share, verify that the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent service accounts have full control of the network share.
If you are using a proxy account, verify that the account is a member of the sysadmin server role and that it has full control of the backup directory and network share.
Verify that the file is not locked in the file system; for example, a backup or antivirus software could be locking the file.
DatabaseBackup has been designed not to delete transaction log backups that are newer than the most recent full or differential backup. This could explain why transaction log backups are not being deleted.
I followed these instructions and then I right clicked the "sp_delete_backuphistory" job under "SQL Server Agent > Jobs" folder and clicked the "Start job at step ..." option. The job successfully ran, but my .bak backup
files were still on located on my separate drive partition I use specifically for these backups.
The SQL Server and the SQL Server Agent are both using the same AD account.
Would any of you SQL gurus out there know how to resolve this?
    Thank you

The sp_delete_backuphistory job only deletes the historical info from the backup & restore tables in the msdb database. It does not do anything to the files on disk.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188328.aspx
The code to actually purge the backup files from disk is inside the DatabaseBackup stored procedure. It is controlled by using the @CleanupTime parameter for that stored proc. Verify the value for that parameter is low enough to delete your files on disk. The
value is in hours, and I believe the default is 48 hours. The SQL agent job name usually starts with "DatabaseBackup...".

  • Im trying to delete old messages from my iphone 4 but how can i view them on a computer to make it easier?

hi i have recently backed up my iphone 4 to do a wipe of my phone. i got all my info back on it but was wondering how can i view my messages on my computer so that i can delete old messages from months ago without actually having to delete the recent ones?

The backup includes text messages but they are stored in a format meant only for restoring back to the phone. There are 3rd party backup extractors that can view them. One of them is http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/ibackupextractor/

There are a number of ways to delete pictures from the Camera Roll.  One is to open Camera Roll in the thumbnail view, tap the arrow button (top right), tap all the pictures you want to delete, tap the Delete button ant the bottom.  Photo Library pictures are deleted by unchecking Sync Photos on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings, followed by syncing your phone.
