Deleting old iPhone Updates

My wife and I both have an iPhone 4 and we are using the same iMac with two accounts to update the Software (4.01. / 4.0.2).
The 4.0.2 - Update has had more than 500 MB in Size and iTunes downloaded it twice - so 1 GB of HDD - Space lost on that update alone.
Is there a way to delete the old Updates while of course not making iTunes forget that it is installed?

I believe it does incremental backups (only backs up changed data) so those older backup files contain data that hasn't changed since the date of the backup. If you delete them you will not be able to restore the data that hasn't changed in a while.

  • Deleted old iPhone update, now what?

I received an error message during the new iPhone update 1.1.1, and I read some of the discussions here about removing a previous iPhone update (iPhone1,11.1.1_3A109aRestore.ipsw) to allow for the new 1.1.1 update. I did that and the update worked, but I am not sure - do I need to keep that other update, or should I just toss it? Thank you!!
P.S. My update worked just fine after deleting the file above.

It won't do you any good to keep the old update since you supposedly cannot revert to it anyway. Trash it and empty the trash.

  • Delete old itunes updates

Do you mean iTunes or iPod updaters like in the .exe files? Newer iTunes install over the old ones, right??
I would burn anything off to a back up cd first.
I once Uninstall some of the older iPod updates and ran into a small problem, so nice to have a back up. Paula

  • Delete old ipod updates

Is it ok to delete old ipod updates, but keep the last update.thay take up close to 1gig of space.

Yes, you can delete them. They aren't needed once they are used.
Keeping the most recent updater is a good idea.

  • Two questions: getting first iPhone & deleting old iPhone backups?

    Here's the deal.
My neighbor has 'paid' for his old iPhone 4 through AT&T and is getting a new one. He's going to give me his old one. It will be my first smartphone (and, naturally, my first iPhone). I've backed it up for him using my computer before and there are a bunch of his apps in iTunes which I would like to remove. So my first question is, "how do I get rid of that backup"?
I've downloaded the iPhone 4 manual with iOS 4.x (which he has running) and I think I know how to go about updating and resetting the phone. After I get it updated to iOS 6.x, I'll be going to the AT&T store and finding a good (cheap!) plan that fits my lifestyle.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Clinton

On the phone, follow the directions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5661
Then set things up using YOUR Apple ID. Any old backups, delete: iTunes>Preferences>Devices. Also delete any & all content, in your library, obtained with his ID.

  • Deleted old System-update directories

I am about to install ZCM 11 SP3 on our ZCM 11.2.3.a linux servers.
In an attempt to free up space can I delete the older system-updates from the /var/opt/novell/zenworks/content-repo/system-update folder.
    Thanks

There is a bug (IMO), but it's a WAD that can cause the old system-updates to remain and zman sudu won't delete anything.
Should only happen on your satellite servers though.
If it's your satellites that have the old system updates, then yes, you can manually delete the directories.
It has something to do with the content replication schedule and the automatic (hard coded) database cleanup routines. IF the database cleanup routines run before the content replication, then you end up with orphaned system updates in the system and since the database thinks it's gone, zman sudu doesn't do anything.
I had like 15 GB of system updates I had to delete on 20+ servers.

  • Can't Delete old iPhone Backup off of iCloud backup storage

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to a iPhone 5S, I restored the 5S using the recent backup of old 4S.  Now I am getting "out of cloud storage space" messages on my new 5S phone.  I went into iCloud backup storage to delete the 4S backup, but, it says it is in use and cannot be deleted at this time. I have attempted to turn off iCloud backup on the old 4S phone, shutting it off, turning off iCloud backup, but, get the same failed message when attempting to delete the old backup.
What is the trick to removing this without wiping the old 4S, because I want to be sure there is nothing left on the phone, before I completely wipe it...and I can't tolerate the "No more space in cloud storage" message that keeps popping up on the 5S.
    Thank you,
    --k

That should clear up on it's own but may take 3-5 days to do so.  Wait a few days and try deleting the old backup again.  If you want to back up your phone in the meantime, manually back it up to your computer using iTunes (click Back Up Now on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings).

  • Deleting old large updates

I have some huge update Java files that I would like to delete because they are so large. Can I do that without problems or do they build on each other?
I have both "Java SE Runtime Environment 5" (and 6) updates and straight "Java 6" updates. It comes to 900 megs!
And if they are not all needed (I suspect) why aren't the old versions automatically uninstalled when a new version is uploaded?
    Thanks.

Can I do that without problems or do they build on each other? They are all separate, so you can delete whichever ones you want. The most recent is all you probably need, but you may want to keep the latest 1.4.2 version in case you need to run code that's not compatible with later versions. You could always reinstall it later if you need it though.

  • Apple deleted old iPhone backup :(

    Hello!
I'm paying for iCloud and had an old iPhone4S backup at the cloud. Today, I decided to get back for iPhone, only to found that Apple deletes iPhone backups older than 6 months and my backup was near 9 months old.
I went very angry, because of some unique data I had with this backup.
Is there any way to restore it? Any chance for Apple support help?
    Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, I doubt it.  You would have to contact iCloud support to find out for sure.
I assume that Apple does this because there are some 340 million iCloud accounts and a number of them are abandoned as people sell or stop using old devices, or create new accounts to use.  At some point they have to clear out the old accounts to free up server space.

  • Delete old iPhone 3GS out of my account

    Hi,
I just got my new iPhone 4 and would love to give my old 3GS to my girlfriend. All I try to do does not activate the phone for her, although the provider says it should work.
So, I thought, there might be a problem activating it, because I registered it to Apple as my iPhone. Is there a chance, that this could be the reason for not activating under a new phone number and, how can I delete the registration?
    Thank you for your trouble

    Hi diesel vdub,
thank you for your help. This at least gives me the information, that the trouble is not caused by Apple or the registration.
Anyway. After putting the sim card in, the iphone just shows one reception bar that's it.
When trying to activate it with iTunes it continues to try to connect but fails. Even though I can connect to the iTunes Store at the same time without problems.
    Any idea?

  • Is it ok to delete old iphone backups

i have the latest backup for my phone and my wife's phone in itunes, prefs, devices. i also see one each from when we got our new phones on jan 5. is it okay to delete the jan 5 backup files now that i have a newer backup? is there a good reason to keep them? also, in finder, itunes, i have previous itunes libraries from 2009 to 2011, do i need these? what will happen if i delete them? thanks.

The manual iTunes backup process for my iPhone and iPad has stored multiple manual backups in my laptop's MobileSync backup folder. I thought iTunes only stored the most recent one backup. There are multiple files for each backup date and multiple backups going back for months. The iPhone backup folder has over 1.2GB of files in it. The iPad folder has .5GB of files in it. I have two questions:
    1.     Why is iTunes creating more than ONE backup for my iPhone?
    2.     Is it  OK to delete the ALL of the older backup files (prior to the most recent backup date)?

  • Deleting old JS2 Update files

I have JS2 Runtime Environment Updates, 3, 6 & 7 in addition to SE v1.4.2 using up a lot of space on my hard drive. Can I delete one or more of them without experiencing some unforeseen problem?

where is "home>music>previous itunes library folder" ?
It is in your Home folder in /Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes libraries.
Double click the *Macintosh HD* icon on your desktop. then go to Music/iTunes.
Note that these are single files of a few dozen MB. It is not a backup of all your song files or everything in your iTunes folder.
Deleting them won't save much space.

  • Deleting old iphone 3 pictures from my iphone 4

My pictures were automatically transferred from my iphone 3 to my iphone 4 when I upgraded, but now I can only view the iphone 3 pictures on my phone. I cannot delete any of them, and they are in my phone twice...as "photo library" and "iphone 3".  It's taking up a lot of space on my phone and I'd like to delete all of them.  They don't show up on my computer or in itunes so I can't find anywhere to access them in order to delete...any ideas on how to remove?
    Thanks!

The PhotoStream only includes the last 30 days of photos. If they were taken by the iPod more then 30 days ago they are no longer in the PhotoStream.

  • I deleted my iPhone, and now I'm missing many iCloud contacts

I had to erase my iPhone (long story) and after doing that, I noticed that many contacts were missing.  No problem, I figured, I just have to make sure I'm syncing to iCloud and I'll be fine. WRONG!  The contacts are now missing from iCloud itself.  This is very frustrating.  I just cleaned up all my contacts (deleted old ones, updated new ones, etc.) and now many are totally missing, and some of the old ones I deleted are back.
To be clear, this is not an issue with my phone.  This is on iCloud.com.  The reset of the phone is simply what made me notice it.
And to anticipate what I may be asked:  (1) In my Contacts on my Mac, the contacts in the "on my mac" section are showing up, when yesterday they weren't there.  (yesterday I could only see iCloud contacts)  (2) I did a Time Machine backup about a week ago, so that could get me my missing contacts, but still won't help with all the work I did recently.  (3) My last iPhone backup (to my Mac) is over 2 years old.  I've been using iCloud, so didn't see the need for a hard backup.
Not sure why/how resetting an iPhone would affect iCloud (which should be operating independently) but it seems to have done exactly that.  I'm stuck.  I need those contacts back!  Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you!

Update:  I reset my phone again and this time I restored it from my last iCloud backup.  That "sort of" worked.  (The missing info was on my phone temporarily, but it's still missing from iCloud.com and as the phone syncs with the cloud the missing contacts are disappearing.)
This is good news, but I'm losing progress.  How can I restore my iCloud settings to that last backup?
