Deleting Orphaned Preferences and Other Files

Under Classic there were a couple of apps that would seek out and list orphaned preferences and other files from applications that had been deleted from the computer. There are some UNINSTALLER apps for Leopard, but I can't seem to find any that will list orphaned files for deletion. What I want to do is get rid of orphaned files from apps that I probably hand-deleted some time ago.
Anyone know of a solution?

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
If you have uninstaller software already installed then it should, typically, alert you to associated files that you may want to delete. But they will not work for applications you have deleted prior to installing the uninstaller software.

  • Application preference and plist files

Does anyone know how to access application and plist files so that I can delete them. I have a 3rd party application (Popcorn) that I need to delete from my Macbook Pro. When using Tiger, it was as simple as doing a file-popcorn, and it would list all the file extensions. Leopard only lets you delete the application, leaving preferences and plist files hidden. I found this out after I deleted the popcorn application. My computer shows no files for Popcorn when I do a search, but after I reloaded the application, it fired right up and kept all my personal info etc. Anyone have a solution?

  • Properly removing programs and other files

I recently tried to install World of Warcraft on my macbook. After I realized that my computer was just a little too slow to run it properly I tried to erase it. Now my macbook is telling me that my hard drive is almost full and I'm convinced that I didn't remove World of Warcraft properly. How do I check if I removed it or not and if I didn't how do I properly remove it and other files for future reference?

  • Can I "partition" a HD for TM and other files?

Well, I have never used Time Machine before and recently when I thought about starting to use it, I connected to my MacBook the external hard drive which contains apps, music, movies etc. (pretty much a "manual backup" you can say), but I got a message that Time Machine works when the hard drive is used exclusively for TM and doesn't have other content (I hope I understood well).
So, is there any way to "partition" my HD so one place will be reserved for Time Machine and in another I can keep movies, music and other files that I do not want to keep in my MacBook anyway?
I hope I won't have to buy a new HD just for TM.
Thank you in-advance for the help.

in fact, that is a very good idea.
    see http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/3.html
    and http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/6.html
however, i would not recommend getting started unless you have a backup of the files located on that external. so, buying an additional external may be in order in any case ...

I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem.  Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.
I tried updating iTunes and iOS to the newest versions and the problem still persists.
I'm officially ready to switch to Windows Phone or Android now...
    *edit*
A Google search with results restricted to the last month shows that this problem seems to be becoming more and more common.

    - Are you saying that they are not listed in your Purchased section?
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Are they listed in your Puchases history when you log into your account on your computer?
    - Are they still available now for purchase? If not then you are out of luck
If they are still available and listed in your Puchase History then contact iTunes

  • Yosemite finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files

    Hello,
under Yosemite  the Finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files.
Is this just my problem? Help please.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I currently have Lion, when I upgrade to Mountain Lion, all my apps, music, videos and other files will be erased?

I currently have Lion, when I upgrade to Mountain Lion, all my apps, music, videos and other files will be erased?

Lion dropped application support for PowerPC. An OS may drop or change what to use to open a file, not the file.
Of course CCC is what many have used for 10 yrs now and it is or will be $20 like SuperDuper - commercial.
Always use something like those in addition to or instead of TimeMachine.
