Deleting Part of a Source Media Clip

Good Morning;
For example; If I have a 4 minute clip in it's original (h.264) imported into fcpx and find that 2 minutes of it is useless and want to permanently delete it to save disk space.  What would the work flow  be?
Thanks

Could be done two ways:
1) Trim it before importing.  Import the trimmed version.
2) Make a project out of it. Trim it, export it, import it.  Delete the project and the original, un-trimmed, version of the media. I have not tested what I have read here but, according to what I have read, Final Cut will re-encode the video when exporting, not just trim it.  You probably don't want it to re-encode the video and lose quality so your best choice would be a ProRes version that is 10 times the size of the original, thus taking much more space, not less, than the original clip.
As far as I can tell, there is no way to split a clip in the event viewer and delete one part.

  • Selecting part of MPEG-4 media clip to import

Whilst editing a multicam project I cannot select part of an MPEG-4 media clip in "Media Import", and wonder if there is a trick to it? Importing AVCHD is ok, but I have one camera which produced 29GB of media in one chunk. That is a lot to ingest for one clip so I hoped to select just part of that to import at any one time.
When I play the clip in the Media Import Window the "In and Out"  do not work, giving the error tone. It reads the MPEG-4 movie and plays it. Do I need to change the file format?

Thanks for the speedy help on this.
The problem was no doubt that the files which were given to me were neither on a camera, nor a true camera archive, for they had been converted to MP4 from something on a Sony Pro camera.
I have just upgraded my iMac and needed to upgrade my file-conversion prog. I have been using Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate, so I went back to it, upgraded to the Mavericks version, and it will let me edit the range of the clip before converting it. I chose to convert it to the FCPX output, and Bingo, I now have a 2 minute MOV clip ingested and on the timeline.
ProRes was available as an alternative, but I thought I would use the default FCPX setting this time. Seems fine.
Thanks for making me look at the problem a different way.

Legacy FCP has Revert Project to return to the last saved version, and it has Restore Project to go back to one of the autosaved versions. The maximum number of undo's can be set in user preferences. A lot different than X.

  • Question About Deleting Parts Of Clips and iMovie Trash

    Hi,
Why are small deleted portions of clips not moved to the trash, where you can recover them? It looks like if you want to delete small sections of individual clips, those deletions cannot be recovered once the project is saved. Am I missing something?

Hmmm. Something doesn't sound quite right. When I delete a portion of a clip here — after splitting a clip, for example — the deleted portion goes in the iMovie trash. To retrieve the clip I can just drag it from the Trash window back to the Timeline or Clips pane.
That's not how it's working for you? Are you using iMovie 6?
There is another way to retrieve the clip, which relies on iMovie's non-destructive editing feature. It is useful when you've used Direct Trimming to shorten a clip, which does NOT send the deleted portion to the Trash. (There is no clip for the trimmed portion.) It's also useful after you've emptied the iMovie Trash, which removes a split clip, but does NOT remove the clip's source file.
That is to Option-drag the shortened clip to some other location (Option-dragging creates a copy) then select the clip and choose Advanced > Revert Clip to Original. That reverts that clip to its original length. Depending on the editing you've done to the clip, it may be necessary to select the menu command more than once.
Otherwise, I can't think of what might cause it to work differently for you.
Please say how you are creating the clip that is deleted. Is it a split clip?

  • Deleting part of a clip in event library in imovie '11

    Hi,
i'd like to delete parts of clips in the event library in imovie `11. So not in a movie/project, but in an event!
if i do it the way it worked with imovie 09 (rejecting and than "move to trash")  imovie ´11 moves the whole clip to trash. even if only a part of it was marked as "rejected".
    1. How should i keep my library small in terms of disk space, without deleting the parts of my clips i definitely will never ever use in a movie?
(i have lots of very big clips (e.g. from GoPro cameras) with each about 4 GB)
    2. Why does the way i described above work with imovie 09, but seems not implemented in imovie ´11?
Thanks a lot for your help!

A couple of features might be of interest.
    1) Select your clip. Then, in the top menu bar, select CLIP/Special Effect.../Flash and Hold Last Frame.
This will create a flashbulb effect, and then hold the last frame in the clip still. The flash effect is actually a Fade Through White transition, so you can edit it out if you don't like it.
As a hint, if the frame you want to freeze is not at the end of the clip, drag to create a selection so that there is a yellow border around a range of clips, the last frame of which you want to freeze. Then Edit/Split Clip. The frame you want to freeze is now at the end of the clip.
    2) You might also want to try CLIP/INSTANT REPLAY/25%. You can highlight an action by replaying it in slow motion.

  • Source Media is bad... but it isn't

I just bought Leopard... Trying to install on a Quad G5 with 4 gig RAM... all original Apple parts [DVD/CD/HD/etc.]
Two harddrives were in a RAID 0... install fails saying the DVD is bad. I tried again... failed same way.
I deleted the RAID and tried one drive [erased and formated] - install failed again with bad media.
The verify has no issue with the DVD. My laptop can read it... but I have not tried the install on the 17 inch MacBook Pro Intel... I can't be without both computers...
By the way, it always fails at the exact same point... to the byte.
Now I am trying the installation with no options - all unchecked... Hopefully it will get through the required and then I can boot and work around... lets see.... it always fails with 6 minutes remaining... it just made it to 5 for the first time ever....
... is it possible the "optional" installs live on the DVD somewhere my G5s DVD reader cannot access? A hardware compatibility issues?
... now it is on 5 mintes for about two minutes... looking lie it is going to fail ... again ... I cannot return opened software... I cannot get it to install...
... boom ... just failed again! Source media is damaged ... only it isn't!!!
    Shame on Applesoft...

    Hello jlzimmerman,
Yes, if your iPod is formatted as Fat32, then there is a *4 GB* maximum fize size transfer limit.
And AFAIK, you cannot format the iPod as NTFS if you still want to use the iPod as an iPod. The only thing it will be capable of is being able to store files on. Sorry.

  • "recording stopped because the format of the source media changed" Error

I am trying to import video from my digital camera via firewire to quicktime...
the New movie recording screen appears and works, but after a random amount of time (normally just around 4 minutes..) the recording stops and the message appears..
"recording stopped because the format of the source media changed"
I have plenty of disk space, and am sending the output vid to the desktop..
please help.. I have spent 3 days trying to record the vid...
I cannot import via imovie because I want to have the sound come from a different source then the movie.. i.e. Quicktime lets me get vid from DV and sound from "saffire" sound card..
    Thanks

So does the HC3 and I have to re-set the camcorder output to match the capture settings each time I switch modes. However, I don't use QT for capture since the ability to maintain frame rate is dependent on the platform's CPU power. As you feel the problem is tied to your use of QT Pro, why not download and try the free Vidi dedicated capture utility.
I'll check out vidi. I'm not familiar with it. I've been using this same method to capture clips for several years. I pretty much set the camera once and never have to mess with it again. I don't switch the mode at all during the day.

  • Scale of source media - question

Does anybody else miss the scale accuracy of the source media in the information panel?  I bubbled it up through FCPX feedback, but that's like whoosh into thin air...  and I'm not complaining about X - I actually am impressed but I really miss knowing the actual accurate percentage of the source scale, because I like to know if I'm ever going above the original resolution when I adjust the scale of a clip in my storyline.  In FCP7 y'know, you could see the exact percentage of the original scale of a source inside a sequence, so if you have a 720p sequence and you drop a 1080p clip into it, it shows 66% of it's original scale, and then you can know if you increase the scale above 100%.
Right now, in FCPX, a clip reads 100% if it fills the storyline frame, having nothing to do with the actual scale of the clip relative to its original properties.  So you can't know precisely how much you're above or below its original scale - I mean you can guess about it based on what it is versus what your storyline settings are and how much it's filling the frame, but we lost that accurate feedback is weird to me.
Do any of youy ever have a sense of what Apple Pro Apps is working on toward suggestions and or feedback?

Set the spatial conform to none and scale it manually if you're worried about skill up too much. If you're downscaling I'm not sure it would matter to me except fir curiosity.

    Hi mzf35k,
CreatePDF would enable you to combine two files however you might not be able to delete from the existing file. You need to make modification(delete) in the source file.
Or you can purchase the full Acrobat or subscription for Acrobat to perform the desired task with PDFs.(Please visit the link)

  • Unable to recover source video clips from Time Machine/Trash

I have an imac. It has the latest version of mavericks, time machine and Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5. By mistake, some source video clips (mpeg) where deleted from inside Premiere Pro. I tried recovering them from Trash / Time machine. But no luck. it is as though those files never existed on the computer. Please advice as to how those files could be recovered from the computer.

I am sorry to confuse you. Here are the facts -
-- the files have been backed up for the past 6 months.
-- by accident, my 7 year old deleted some files while in premiere pro. He was on it for about 1 minute.
-- I shut down premiere pro and the computer. Premiere pro did seem to give me some trouble while shutting down. It seemed to have hung up. But, was able to shut down the computer.
-- I rebooted the computer, open premiere pro and my project. The system was not able to find the source files.
-- The files disappeared from Finder. Then I went to Time machine and still no files.
What do I want? I want to recover those files. I am scratching my head here, the files disappeared from the original folder,  they are not in trash and there is no trace of them in time machine!

  • Can I turn media clip parameters into defaults?

I have a problem that  cannot be solved without a special plugin, according to MVP Dave Merchant of the RMA Forum, so I'm wondering what it might take for me to solve it:
My PDFs typically contain a large number of video clips - sometimes as many as 100, with the same particular cluster of parameters needed for every one (floating window, stay open forever till closed by user, no poster, etc.). The current interface forces me to enter these parameters again and again in a set of different dialogs for every single one of these clips one at a time. Then when I inevitably realize later that I need to edit the document, Acrobat's primitive Text Touch-up capabilities cannot do the job, nor can the Replace Pages feature as far as I can see. So I'm forced to return to the source Word document, make the changes there, rebuild the PDF, and go through the same lengthy and tedious process of embedding the video clips and setting their parameters all over again.
I have requested the ability to have a set of parameters stored as a default as long as about seven years ago, but without success. Back then, someone recommended to me a third party company that might be able to do this for me, but at the time, I was reluctant to spend the money. Now I am at least willing to consider this.
Thanks for your help and/or advice.
    Peyton Todd

As I mentioned, I was directed to the Acrobat SDK forum by Rich Media Annotation guru Dave Merchant. I can best answer your question about why Acrobat IX's text editing capabilities are insufficient by repeating my description  of the problem with Replace Pages in my earlier post on the Acrobat Rich Meda forum.
'As far as I can see, Replace Pages won't do the job either. Either I must go back to the source document in Microsoft Word and make the changes, perform the page replacement, then re-insert the media clips, or excerpt the appropriate pages to a separate PDF and make the changes with the Text Touch-up tool, which does not enable the text to flow to a second page. And in neither one of these means does the text flow to the next page with all subsequent pages flowing as desired - to say nothing of the fact the many of my decisions as to when to make a new page depend on my own judgement in the source document as to margins, when to add a carriage return to prevent splitting of material that should stay together, and so on.'
As you can see, the big problem is having everything flow throughout the entire document, which could be quite long. And apparently no text editing feature in Acrobat XI will do this. The reply by Dave Merchant to what I quoted just above seems to confirm this:
'Nothing in Acrobat's editing system will reflow content across pages. PDF files are totally page-centric documents, any edits you make ONLY happen on the current page.'
Often my edits will be rather long, necessitating the flow of content to the next page and all subsequent pages. So it looks like the C/C++ route may be all that's available. I used to be a good programmer myself but mostly in high level languages like DBASE/FOXPRO and NOMAD (like FOXPRO but for mainframes). It's true I've written some fairly complex Javascript (AJAX), but I'm very much out of practice now, and at an age where it's proverbially difficult for old dogs to learn new tricks.
I fear that hiring a third party may be beyond my ability to pay, but I'd like to ask about it nonetheless. How complex would the task be? A halfway solution, if it's easier to do, might be a quick program attachable to a function key or Alt, Ctrl, or Shift key combination that would set the same set of defaults for each media clip as I embed it. Not having either of those, the best method I've found so far has been a keyboard macro written in AutoHotkey, but that always seems to have a few kinks, such as the fact that drop-down list boxes sometimes open upward and sometimes downward, and if I'm not mistaken, seem depend on where on the screen one has opened the PDF.
P.S. I don't have Acrobat IX - my information comes from their doc and a video demo I viewed on Adobe's web site.

  • Source media damaged... what should I do?

I did a software update recently and since then everytime I try to open Skype, iTunes or Quicktime I get a message saying it requires Quicktime 7.5.5 or later to run. I have tried doing the software update for Quicktime again and it says the source media is damaged. I have also tried downloading the most recent version of Quicktime (I think... 769) and once again this says the source media is damaged.
    What should I do?
A while back I stupidly managed to delet my DVD Player too and ever since have not been able to re-install this either.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Its hard not having music or video! My mac is all work and no play right now =(

    Welcome to the forums!
Run the 10.5.8 combo updater again, but not via Software Update, then repair permissions.
Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.

  • Deleting the Older BWA Sources in Manage Space Tab

    Hello,
I am currently facing an issue in deleting the older BWA Sources under the Manage Spaces Tabs. As part of my project, I happened to create a good number of BWA sources but now when it was time to delete those I am unable to do so. The list just keeps populating with newer BWA Sources being created on each day and it is becoming hard to keep a track on that list.
So, I was wondering if someone could help me with deleting those BWA Sources.
(P.S. I tried the right click option on the BWA Source to see if it could throw me an option to delete them but, no such option turned out.)
Also, after creating the Information Spaces, its list under the Home tab too gets populated and does not have the option to delete the older Information Spaces.
    Thank You

It is safe to uninstall the older versions.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • QuickTime Pro error: format of source media changed

I keep getting this error message:
Recording stopped because the format of the source media changed.

I'm importing video clips from a video camera via firewire. I do this all the time and never had problems until today. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard about a month ago, but it was working fine up until today. Can anyone shed light on what this means and how to fix it?
    Thank you.
