Deleting photos-big fat oops and now what?

I deleted some photos from another application (adobe bridge) and now, when I am in iphoto and I double click on the thumbnail all I get is a grey window with a big exclamation point in the center. So, although I can see the photo in thumbnails I cannot do anything with it like dragging and dropping or copy and paste or right click/'open with.' Is there any way to retrieve these photos?

iPhoto keeps up to 3 versions of each photo: the tiny thumbnail, the full-sized original, and a modified version if you edit. We know you didn't delete the thumbnails, but they are really only suited for onscreen viewing and not useful for much else. Whether or not you can salvage some of your photos depends on what you deleted and if another large version exists.
Did you delete the files from the Originals folder in your iPhoto Library folder? If so, and the photos had been edited (including portrait-oriented photos rotated by a camera's auto rotate function), perhaps you can locate the edited versions inside the Modified folder. Conversely, if you deleted the files directly from the Modified folder, you could try to locate the Originals. In that case, you could also try right-clicking the thumbnails and doing a "Revert to Original".
If you find the files, drag them out of the iPhoto Library folder to your Desktop. Then use iPhoto to place the thumbnails in the iPhoto trash and empty. Once deleted from your library, you can import the files in again.
There is no way to turn those tiny thumbnails into useful files, so if you don't have a file in Originals or Modified then those photos are gone. In that case, drag the thumbnails to the iPhoto trash and empty it. With any luck, your database will survive the damage you caused by dealing with the files directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Without that luck, you may have to rebuild your entire library from scratch.
As you have seen, Bridge and iPhoto are incompatible. For the future, you can set Photoshop (Elements) as your external editor in iPhoto's Preferences. Instead of using Bridge to browse inside your iPhoto Library folder, you use iPhoto itself. (Which is way, way more powerful than Bridge.) Select the photos using iPhoto, open them for editing in Photoshop, and when you Save (not Save As) the edited version will be automatically saved into your iPhoto Library. It's a workflow that took me awhile to get used to, but now seems natural. I still have a set of images that I don't want in iPhoto, and I use Bridge to browse those folders.
Regards.

Listing order and dates of my photos have all changed and now it is a mess in my photo library! I tried to list them again by date, but it didn't fix the problem. What to do?

If your preferences keep getting messed up try this:   make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Hmm... It looks like they are gone forever now then. I can't think of any other way of getting them back apart from restoring from an iTunes or iCloud backup. Somebody else might be able to help but I think they're gone forever. I don't know why they were wiped from your iPod but it could be something to do with security. In the future I would recommend syncing to iTunes or iCloud to prevent it from happening again. You can always make a reservation at the Genius Bar and see what those guys can do because it seems that they are still there, they are just 'hidden' from view. http://concierge.apple.com/reservation/gb/en/techsupport/

  • Deleted time machine backups in Finder, now what?

I know this was foolish, but I didn't do any research before hand. My external drive had 8Gs left and the Time Machine window said it couldn't backup because it was almost full. I thought it also said something about deleting previous Time Machine backups, so I selected the first 10 or so and put them in the trash. Then when I tried to empty the trash, it took forever (still going right now at 317,996 items to delete). Anyway, my question is, now what? I am not concerned about the older backups but do I need to do anything special for a proper backup of the iMac now? Should I start over or will Time Machine fill in the gaps. I have been searching on the forum but I still don't understand how this works. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I neglected to answer this before.
Assuming there's no damage, or it's repairable, then no, you don't need to do anything more, although you should do a new backup as soon as you're sure the existing backups are ok.
What you've lost is only the backups of any files and folders that existed only at the time of the backups you deleted.
So if those "first 10 or so" were your oldest backups, all you've done is what TM would have done anyway, although perhaps a bit faster. If they were your more recent ones, then you've lost the copies of items that were added or changed after the time of the oldest one still there.
It is a strange concept, and a very powerful system, but let me put it this way: TM will never delete it's copy of anything that's still on your system, or was there at the time of any remaining backup.
You manually deleting them works exactly the same way.
This is the "magic" of the "multi-links" that TM uses. Think of them as multiple, extra-fancy aliases. Every backup contains "links" to TM's copy of every item that was on your Mac at the time of that backup. So a file that's not been changed in a long time will have a whole passel of them; a new file will only have one, or a few. What you deleted were these links; the actual backup copies are only deleted from the TM disk when the last link to it is deleted.
So . . . you may have dodged a bullet!

    - What OS is on your computer? you say you have Windows 98. That I think is the problem.
    - Are you importing the photos by:

    If not how?
the .ithmp are thumbnails, not the full photo

Connect the iPod to a charging source and then try the will not turn on topic of:

If you have a 2G iPod and did not have the iPod connected to a charging source it is likely that the battery fully drained before the erase was complete since it can take hours to do the delete.

  • How do I delete photos in the icloud and have them stay gone?

How do I delete photos in the icloud and have them stay gone!

The only way you can do that is to import them into your library first, but you may have done that already.
The easiest way to tell is to select a photo from the photostream album in iPhoto and ctrl-click on it, if it gives you the option to import it isn't in your iPhoto library, if it offers you the option to show in library it has already been imorted.

Most of the people on these forums, including myself, are fellow users - you're not talking to iTunes Support here.

Maye the iPod is not sighned into the iTunes account that purchased them.  Also, maybe the computer is also not signed into that account.
Also, do you have restrictions set on the iPod that would prevent syncing them. Settings>General>Restrictions
