Deleting photos from the Hard Drive as well as iPhoto
In iTunes when you press the delete key to get rid of a song, iTunes asks you if you want to move the selected file to the trash. Is there a way to do this in iPhoto? Because when I press delete to get rid of a photo from iPhoto it removes it from the iPhoto library but leaves it on the computer, which means I have to then go digging in the actual folders for the file and delete it by hand. I import 15mb+ photos, all in RAW, so it gets to be a huge pain to do this. Someone help me out, and thanks.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A +Managed library+, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
A +Referenced Library+ is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
So, if you use a Referenced Library you said "I want to be responsible for File Management" and that includes putting the files where you want them on import, and trashing them when you want them removed. iPhoto has no ability to manipulate files outside the Library package.

Deleting photos from the hard drive
When I delete photos from the library, they remain in the folders in my pictures folder. Is there an easy way to erase them from iphoto and my hard drive at the same time?
Thanks,
AndrewHi andrew,
you have to empty iPhoto's trash bin. It's all the way at the bottom of the source window (or in the menubar.... iPhoto/empty trash) -
Is it possible to delete photos from the hard drive via a collection?
I use collections to edit photos to find the" keepers". Is there a way to delete rejected photos from my hard drive via the collection?
Yes - via a lesser-known keystroke sequence called "splat delete":
Windows: Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Delete
Mac: Cmd-Option-Shift-Delete
*** WARNING: There will be no prompt.

Was the entire folder copied including the iTunesLibrary.itl file?

How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?
How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive? Will my machine run faster?
If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions. -
How to delete photos from my hard drive to free up space?
I've got a Mac Book and have ran out of space.
How to I delete photos i don't want any more from my hard drive? It seems that if I only delete them from iphoto is not enough.
I don't see individual photo documents stored in my hard drive as would have seen in Windows environment.
Help please! You won't actually see the pictures deleted. They are stored in User/Picture/iPhoto Library. When you delete pics in iPhoto, the size of that library should be reduced
If you right click on the library, select "Show Contents", and you will be able to see all your images in the "Master" folder. -
How do I permanently delete photos from my hard drive?
Hi.
I have deleted photos from my iPhoto but now I want them off my hard drive to increase space. I forget how to do this. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
MargieMove them form the library view (events or photos) to the iPhoto trash in the source pane on the left and empty the iPhoto trash - iPhoto menu ==> empty trash
Deleting them from an album deletes them only from that album not from the library or from disk

How do I delete items from the hard drive?
Im trying to make more space in my hard drive and want to delete items that I no longer want or need. How do I see everything I have in my hard drive and delete it?
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on the hard drive. Also Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
There are a few utilities for scanning the drive. One good one that is free - OmniDiskSweeper. -
Deleting Photos from my hard drive
I have to create some more room on my hard Drive I have backed it up. I have over 10,000 pictures in iphoto and I have deleted 8000 from my originals file however the thumbnails in the photo albums still exist? how do I get rid of them.
When I back up my photos does it keep my photo albums titles or do I need to keep them in photo even though they do not have pictures?Hi there
I highly recommend iPhotoDiet
http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~fuhrer/personal/freestuff/iphotodiet/
It's very good at clearing up your iPhoto library. When you rotate an image or make any changes to it, iPhoto saves an extra copy. It means you get a highly bloated library in no time at all. iPhoto Diet finds all these extra thumbnails and deletes them.
It can take a while to sift through the whole thing first time around, but it is very good.
Hope this is helpful

Restoring deleted photos from lightroom hard drive
If my photos were deleted from my lightroom hard drive, what is the best method to re-import or restore my "back up photos" back into my drive and original catalog?
I think it would depend on your catalog back ups and how the photos were deleted and how many.
If you have a back-up of the catalog before the files were deleted and it was your entire photographic catalog which was large is size , then you can do as DJ suggested. It would probably be the fastest way. After the photos are restored to their original location, you may have to go to File>Import from another catalog, and then choose the folder location of your backups and select the most recent.
If you are speaking of just a few photos, or maybe just one folder, you can simply restore the files on your PC or MAC, and re-import using Add.
Hope that helps. -
I am trying to delete a project (movie) from iMovie (version 10.0.4). I successfully deleted it but it isn't then showing up in my trash items to delete it there. Thus, I'm running low on my storage space. Any ideas?
It's an iMovie Library file that you need to search for. By default iMovie Library files are in the Movies folder.

Hello,
I am trying to move photos from my hard drive to my mac. Mac is using an updated version of Iphoto and is denying the transfer.
How do I get around this? Do I download the order version? or can I not get my photos? If anyone can help please do.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
Thanks CarolI copied my photos onto my hard drive from my mac about 3 months ago. I just plugged my hard drive in to put my pictures back onto my mac but it is giving me a message when trying to open up the photos from the hard drive that states
Like I said we need to know exactly what you did
THere are lots of totally different ways to "copy your photos" onto a hard drive
Exactly how did you do that? The correct way to move an iPhoot library is to verify that the hard drive is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then to drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to it - reverse to bring it back - just drag it from the EHD to the pictures folder (default location) on your computer
Why are you doing this?
you can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database - depending on what has been going on this might resolve things

Importing music from the Hard drive to Itunes
I am pretty new to both IPOD and ITUNES, and am beginning to think I am a bit slow as well. Anyway, I had quite a number of cuts on my hard drive, but have lately copied new files/songs into sub-folder of My Music, and I am not seeing them move into the music list when I start up Itunes. And of course they are not finding their way into the IPOD either. So, I guess my question is do I have to delete everything from the Itunes library (being careful that I don't also delete them from my hard drive as well. If I do this I believe they deleted music will be deleted from my ipod. The question then is how do I move all the music from My Music and it's sub folder back into the Itunes library. I realize that I may not be using the correct terminology, but I am hoping that someone will understand what I want and can tell me how to do it. Thanks in advance.
Bob H.Drag the music into the open iTunes application window instead of the My Music folder; iTunes keeps a database of what's in the library instead of just checking the My Music folder contents, and music just dragged there will be ignored.

I am trying to delete songs from itune 11 library and i want it to delete the song from my hard drive as well. All my songs are in the music folder but not in the itunes folder. itunes did not prompt me to move file to trash nor is there an option to remove file to trash bin. How can i delete songs from both the itunes and hard drive at the same time?
aespinoza2210 wrote:
could it be in the itunes folder or does it have to be in the itunes media folder, which is within the itunes folder??
A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities. So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11. -
I am trying to save memory on my iPhone 4S/ ios6.
1) Can I back up all photos to icloud and the external hard disk I normally use for photos? If I then delete photos from the iPhone do the get deleted on iCloud?
2) Can I back up the newsstand to iCloud and save memory on the iPhone?
3) Can I back up the bookshelf to icloud and save memory on the iPhone?1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
